Update: This was the last debate of 2023 and, with polling showing Donald Trump still holds a commanding lead, it doesn’t appear that he has paid any price for bypassing these events.
He’s dismissed the debates as irrelevant, but save for a few mentions from Chris Christie and Ron DeSantis, none of his rivals have really gone full throttle in attacking him for skipping the events. Trump was the topic of discussion at points on Wednesday night, but those moments were largely overshadowed by the candidates attacking each other.
When moderators asked about the former president’s statement that he would be a dictator on day one of a second term, Christie attacked Trump, but Vivek Ramaswamy seemed to want to out-Trump Trump. Rather than attacking the former president, Ramaswamy labeled Nikki Haley a “fascist” for saying that she wanted verification of social media accounts.

Jam Van features the voices of comedians Pete Lee and Nicole Byer as an anthropomorphic lamb and alligator, respectively. The two characters embark on adventures across the United States with help from their navigator: a “grumpy Gps” voiced by Marc Maron.
At each stop on its road trip, the Jam Van encounters local musicians, who use original songs to teach life lessons to young viewers. In the first episode, Anne the Alligator locates her long-lost uncle in the Big Apple after Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda sings about “The Long Lost Gator of New York City.”

The aftershocks of white nationalist rallies and their violence are still felt in Charlottesville, which hosted the 30th annual Virginia Film Festival this weekend. At the entrance of the fest’s marquee venue, the Paramount Theater (located on the idyllic main street that became a conflict zone August 12), the state pressured festival organizers to install metal detectors. Even as the festival decided to focus on the theme of “Race in Film,” out-of-town white supremacists started making their presence felt in Charlottesville as court appearances stemming from “A12” (the locals’ term for the horrific events this summer) began.
Against this backdrop, Spike Lee came to Charlottesville this weekend and screened his 1997 documentary “4 Little Girls,” about the 1963 murder of four young African-American girls in the bombing of the Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama.

There are few communities as obsessive as Adult Swim fans. The Cartoon Network nighttime programming block debuted in 2001 as a subversive spin on the animated channel’s daytime fare, and soon grew into a catch-all for bold creators. It eventually shook off its animated-only ethos to allow for surreal visions and adventurous filmmaking that fostered some of Hollywood’s most off-the-wall thinkers, and even brought in game celebrities to join in the insanity. Nearly every As title has disparate cults to fight for the programs that speak to them, whether it’s the rockers who ride for “Metalocalypse,” the Tim & Eric faithful who crowd the duo’s live shows, or the chemically enhanced who get their kicks on “Off the Air.”
Here are our picks for the network’s top 20 original comedy series, taking cultural influence into account alongside laughs.

One can only imagine what Bill Maher and Scott Carter, his longtime executive producer-writer, talk about when the subject of religion comes up. For his first full-length play, the honcho behind “Real Time With Bill Maher” ruminates on the afterlife without God in “The Gospel According to Thomas Jefferson, Charles Dickens and Count Leo Tolstoy: Discord,” which opened Sunday under the auspices of Primary Stages at the Cherry Lane Theatre. Carter has structured “Discord” around not one but three stabs at writing the gospel. Who knew that Jefferson, Dickens and Tolstoy each wrote a gospel, and as they belatedly discover,...

James Monroe Iglehart, the iconic originator of The Genie in Aladdin, recently stepped down from the role that earned him a Tony in 2014. From sequins to 18th-century ruffles, Aladdin’s James Monroe Iglehart is about to embark on another dream: playing the dual roles of Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson in Hamilton. On Sunday, Feb. 19, Iglehart will take his final bow as the Genie on Broadway before moving up four blocks from the New Amsterdam Theatre on 42nd Street to the coveted Richard Rodgers Theatre on 46th, where he’ll join the cast of the Alexander Hamilton musical starting mid-April.
While the Genie was famously voiced by Robin Williams in the 1992 animated film, Iglehart has been playing the part since Aladdin’s 2011 out-of- town tryouts in Seattle, which eventually landed in Toronto for a pre-Broadway run in 2013. Night after night, the actor has received roaring applause for his show-stopping rendition of “Friend Like Me,” a number that surely helped him win the 2014 Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical.

I’ve got to give it to Sleepy Hollow‘s Diana: Despite all of the revelations heaped upon her this episode, she really keeps her head.
What, on the occasion of the Headless Horseman’s return, you thought I wouldn’t make a noggin pun?
In this week’s installment, Agent Thomas becomes aware of Headless’ existence, Ichabod’s real birthdate and the fact that her daughter has a biblically foretold world of pain ahead of her. Is it any wonder she ends the hour deciding, no thanks,...

Several of this year’s sound contenders explored battles and other action in a retro fashion very different from the usual superhero mayhem. They include the World War II arenas of “Hacksaw Ridge” and “Allied,” as well as the grittier “Star Wars” battles in “Rogue One”; the terrorist bombing of “Patriots Day”; the miracle on the Hudson in “Sully”; and the unique Indian presence of “The Jungle Book.”
“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”
To comply with director Gareth Edwards’ desire for a grittier “Star Wars” movie, sound editors Matthew Wood and Christopher Scarabosio created a new kind of soundscape. “We tried to make it more war-like than a classic ‘Star Wars’ battle,” Scarabosio told IndieWire. “Obviously there are lasers but we were going for impacts that were more realistic, more like you would hear when a bullet hits a tree or some kind of container, and of sand kicking up.

Conan O'Brien offered an optimistic take on the 2016 election Wednesday, praising America's tradition of peaceful elections and the transfer of power while taking a stab at unity with a classic cheap visual gag.
A self-described history buff, O'Brien noted America has had bitter, contentious elections for 200 years, listing Thomas Jefferson versus Aaron Burr, John Adams versus Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln versus Stephen Douglas and, of course, Alien versus Predator.
"This is our thing, and the optimist in me chooses to be happy that we have fair and free elections at all,...

Doctor Strange and I go way back. He was the first superhero Stan Lee asked me to write when I was a fuzzy newbie, just beginning a long stretch of years in the comic book business, working as an editorial assistant at Marvel. Maybe there’s some synchronicity here: I’d fooled around with magic as a kid and here I was writing about a magician. And more: this conjurer lived in Greenwich village, notorious hotbed of art and creativity and nonconformity, all of which were of powerful interest to me.
And now, more than 50 years later, along comes the Doctor Strange movie, and a satisfying afternoon in the multiplex it is, not least because one of my favorite actors hits all his marks. It is also, no surprise here, a box office success, the fourteenth in a row for the Mighty Marvel Movie Manufacturers.

If you’re upset over the outcome of Tuesday’s presidential election, Conan O’Brien says you should take heart in the idea that the United States, as a nation, is standing on well-trodden ground.

“We have been here before,” O’Brien told the studio audience at his late-night show’s taping Wednesday, saying Donald Trump’s imminent presidency — and the contentious contest with Hillary Clinton that preceded it — falls in line with historical examples like Abraham Lincoln vs. Stephen Douglas and Thomas Jefferson vs.

The term “Electoral College” will dominate headlines on Election Day, but what does it really mean?
As Americans get ready to cast their ballots on Tuesday, learn how the Electoral College was founded, how it works and what happens if Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump become deadlocked at 269 electoral votes apiece.
What is the Electoral College and how does it work?
When voters head to the polls, they aren’t directly picking their next president. Instead, the outcome of the vote in each state determines a slate of electors, who then make the actual choice of president and vice president.

Visitors to conservative websites on Monday were re-introduced to Danney Williams-Clinton, who claims to be the secret spawn of a secret relationship between Bill Clinton and his mother, a Little Rock prostitute named Bobbie Ann Williams. That’s right, America: We’ve entered the Black Love Child phase of Campaign 2016. There’s a long history of allegations of presidents or presidential candidates having secret African-American children. In some cases they actually did. Why is this allegation thrown around so often? Probably because America has a long history of racism. It all started with Thomas Jefferson, who actually did have children with Sally Hemmings,...
