“It was, by every objective measure, one of the most devastating days of my life,” Dallas Jenkins recalls.
The Midwest-born director and son of a best-selling author of Christian novels had for years struggled to build a Hollywood career and had finally landed his big break: directing a movie for Get Out producer Jason Blum, who shared Jenkins’ belief that there was an untapped market for elevated religious fare. Their film — 2017’s rom-com The Resurrection of Gavin Stone — scored “insanely” well at a test screening and their hopes were high.
Then came opening weekend.
“I was at home with my wife and shell-shocked,” Jenkins recalls. Gavin Stone ranked 18th at the box office and opened to just $1.2 million. “I mean, we were crying. I thought this was my chance. I had finally got in the door. I was working with one of the most prolific and influential producers in Hollywood,...

We just got some disappointing news for fans of The Chosen eagerly anticipating Season 4.
Sadly, it will be some time before the series is made available on streaming platforms, and right now we don’t know when that time will be.
However, it’s not all bad news — at least for those in the U.S. and Canada because the series will be shown in theatres over the Easter weekend.
Theatergoers can buy tickets to watch all eight episodes over the three-day weekend, at a discounted cost.
As for international viewers and everyone else waiting with anticipation to see the show, it will be available on The Chosen app at some point, and yes it will be free.
However, fans will have to exercise a bit of patience because no date has been given for that.

Exclusive: Fox Nation is lining up more religious content ahead of Easter, snapping up the rights to both The Chosen and The Passion of the Christ.
Passion of the Christ will be available beginning March 8, while Seasons 1 through 3 of The Chosen are set to debut on Fox Nation on March 10.
Both titles will be available through the peak viewing season, with Passion remaining through Easter and The Chosen staying even longer, through April 21.
In addition to these titles, Fox Nation will also be hosting a roundtable discussion to dissect both programs, led by Fox & Friends host Ainsley Earhardt. Details on guests for the roundtable are coming soon, Fox says.
The Chosen has become somewhat of a hot commodity lately, with The CW picking up the first three seasons last summer. The series about the life of Jesus is from creator, director and producer Dallas Jenkins and stars Jonathan Roumie as the King of Kings.
The Chosen is described as the first multi-season series of its kind. Set against the backdrop of Jewish oppression in first-century Israel, the seven-season show shares an authentic and intimate look at Jesus’ revolutionary life and teachings. The fourth season hit theaters in February, and Season 5 is in production.
It began as a crowdsourcing project on the Angel Studios app and turned into a global hit with over 110 million viewers in 175 countries, with plans to make it available in 600 languages. The series has generated 6.5 million followers across social media, made $35 million at box office in special-event theatrical releases and has spawned an apparel line, best-selling books, DVDs and an upcoming series of graphic novels.
Directed by Mel Gibson, The Passion of the Christ is a 2004 film about the last 12 hours in the life of Jesus of Nazareth (Jim Caviezel). The film opens in the Garden of Olives (Gethsemane) where Jesus has gone to pray after the Last Supper. Jesus resists Satan’s temptations. Betrayed by Judas Iscariot, Jesus is arrested and taken back to within the city walls of Jerusalem where the leaders of the Pharisees confront him with accusations of blasphemy and his trial results in a condemnation to death.
The pic remains the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time domestically, with $370.8 million. It was No. 1 at the North American box office for five nonconsecutive weeks.
Fox Nation has been building its platform on faith-based content, including the docu-drama Jesus Crown of Thorns coming in 2025.

The Chosen‘s creator Dallas Jenkins never set out to make this series. After some setbacks in his professional life, the director and writer shot a short film for his church’s Christmas Eve service called The Shepherd, from the point of view of the shepherds present at Jesus’ birth. The film was a small production, and Jenkins returned to it after making a flop film that could have ended his career. Thankfully, it didn’t. In the Beginning… Dallas Jenkins: The Chosen was born out of failure. I [directed] a feature film, The Resurrection of Gavin Stone, that got released nationally [in January 2017], and it completely bombed at the box office. I was left with a very uncertain future as a filmmaker. Absolutely, if that movie would’ve succeeded, there’d be no Chosen. I dusted off a short film that I had written about a year and a half earlier, about...

Not to sound like a broken record, but it was, once again, a pretty quiet weekend at the box office. Director Matthew Vaughn's "Argylle" topped the charts with a modest $18 million (which was sadly below industry projections) and, quite frankly, that isn't going to be enough to keep theaters afloat until the slate improves in March. But amid the unfortunate slowness of the weekend, a savior emerged in the form of Jesus. Yes, that very same Jesus. And it's not the first time he's come to the rescue in recent months.
The Chosen Inc. released the first three episodes of "The Chosen" season 4 in theaters over the weekend in partnership with Fathom Events. It paid off: The target audience indeed showed up for the cinematic, episodic look at the life of Jesus Christ, with the release pulling in just shy of $6 million over the weekend. Growing up in St. Charles, Illinois, Dallas Jenkins was not the child who was restless while sitting in the pews of church during a long service or in a classroom learning about the Bible. In fact, he was invigorated by Scripture lessons. And the Evangelical Christian, who would end up creating spiritual megahit The Chosen, always asked lots of questions. Jenkins remembers seeing classic imagery of Jesus Christ while in classes, where the Son of God was dressed in immaculate white and blue robes on flannelgraph and picture books. “He was just a big, smiling guy, and all the disciples are these old, bearded dudes,” the 48-year-old recalls. “But I was the one in class [asking], ‘What would it be like playing cards against Jesus? He always knows what you have! What would it be like to play sports with Jesus or to sit around a campfire [with Him]?’” ...

Last month, TV Insider spoke to the cast and creator Dallas Jenkins in Los Angeles for the upcoming season’s premiere—and they gave us a lot of reasons to have faith for the latest episodes. But there’s really only one way to describe this fourth round of Jesus’ (Jonathan Roumie) journey: emotional. “This is our deepest season yet,” says Jenkins. “And it might be our saddest season yet because Jesus is sad.” Disaster after disaster will strike Jesus and His followers this season, but one death that will hit particularly close to home for the Nazareth native will be that of His cousin, John the Baptizer (David Amito). As the preacher who paved the way for Jesus and His teachings,...

Amazon MGM Studios is getting spiritual.
The company announced Wednesday that it’s brokered a partnership with the recently formed Wonder Project, which bills itself as an independent studio designed to “develop series and films rooted in spirituality.” The latter is led by veteran producer Jon Erwin (Jesus Revolution) and former Netflix and YouTube exec Kelly Merryman Hoogstraten, and counts The Chosen creator Dallas Jenkins among its largest shareholders and special advisers. As part of the new pact, Prime Video has already ordered its first project, House of David, to series.
Per Amazon, the logline reads: “House of David follows the once-mighty King Saul as he falls victim to his own pride. A prophet prepares to overthrow him — anointing the outcast shepherd boy David as a second king. As Saul’s fury grows, David navigates love, violence and politics in the court of the very man he’s destined to replace.

The intent of THR‘s annual list of the 50 Most Powerful Showrunners is to provide an accurate state of the TV union — a rundown of the writer-producers selling in an increasingly fraught media climate, making culturally relevant and awards-friendly shows and serving the masses at a time when consensus entertainment has all but vanished. It’s also a great opportunity to pick some brains.
Those showrunners who made the 2023 list were polled on a variety of subjects. If Suits can become a streaming hit years after ending, what other shows deserve a similar fate? What IP are they dying to get their hands on? What’s already a pressing issue for the next WGA contract negotiation with the studios? And if they found themselves with a burner social media account, what would they do with it?
Here are some of the best answers to those and more questions.

Director/producer Brent Ryan Green has optioned the exclusive film and television rights to develop and produce an adaptation of “King Raven,” a trilogy of historical novels by Stephen R. Lawhead. The books set the tale of Robin Hood in the late 11th century amid the Norman invasion of Wales.
Steeped in lore and the political intrigue of medieval Britain, Lawhead presents a historically plausible origin story for Robin Hood. Each title within the series is told from the viewpoint of a member of the Sherwood Forest clan in an entirely new setting.
The trilogy follows the journey of a young Welsh noble, Bran Ap Brychan, as he’s met with the trials and obstacles that craft him into King Raven, better known as Robin Hood.

The fourth season of the hit Christian historical drama The Chosen is set to premiere in theaters on February 1, 2024, and the show’s creator and director, Dallas Jenkins, has shared some teases on what fans can expect. Speaking to Fox News Digital, Jenkins said, “We’re getting closer and closer to what we know is coming. There’s some extreme pain and sadness that’s coming soon in future seasons.” The Chosen, which started life as a crowdfunded project, tells the story of Jesus of Nazareth through the eyes of the different people he met throughout his life. The intent was to create an episode-based portrayal of Jesus that could be “binge-watched” like shows on streaming platforms. Jenkins hinted at dark times ahead as the series builds toward Jesus’ crucifixion but noted, “Of course, there’s also some extreme joy that’s coming. But on the way there, Jesus is...

The Blind is now the most successful release in the history of Fathom Events, as the faith-based feature has grossed $15.7 million at the North American box office as of Monday.
The film is Fathom’s first to see a longer theatrical run than its traditional event cinema releases. Originally slated for an eight-day run as part of Fathom’s new specialty distribution model, it was extended twice, Fathom said, and held a steady position in the top 10 for the duration of its more than three weeks in cinemas.
The Blind was produced by Tread Lively and Gnd Media Group. Andrew Hyatt directs the back-story of the star of Duck Dynasty, Phil Robertson. In 1960s Louisiana, Robertson falls in love and starts a family, but his demons soon threaten to tear everyone apart. As he seeks to conquer the shame of his past, he ultimately finds redemption in an unlikely place.
