Hollywood in the early 1970s was unkind to many of the industry's surviving golden-age legends. The smartest of the bunch had either retired, moved to television, or segued to supporting roles in disaster films. Unlike our current era, there wasn't much nostalgia for the good old days. The '50s and '60s were a time of social upheaval during which Black Americans struggled mightily to fight and win basic civil rights. Meanwhile, the Vietnam War was only getting bloodier. People were not in the market for old-fashioned entertainment. They wanted edgier, angrier movies. Those who wanted more of the same could stay home and watch the same when it reran on the afternoon movie.

The Cowboys: Tommy Lee Jones is remaking John Wayne. To be precise, Jones will write and direct a new version of The Cowboys, Mark Rydell's 1972 Western, in which Wayne starred as a curmudgeonly rancher who must whip a motley group of schoolboys into shape for a cattle drive; the source material is a novel by William Dale Jennings. It's not known if Jones intends to star in the film as well; he's finishing up The Homesman, another Western that he cowrote and directed, and also stars in, alongside Hilary Swank. The Men in Black actor has signed on for the remake of Mark Rydell's 1972 western, reports Variety.
The original Cowboys starred John Wayne and Bruce Dern, centring around a rancher who enlists a group of rookies to help him on a 400-mile cattle drive.
It was based on the novel by William Dale Jennings.
Jones previously directed The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada and the upcoming The Homesman, which he wrote and also stars in.
He will shortly be seen with Robert De Niro in Relativity's The Family.

Tommy Lee Jones is set for his third big screen project as director and his second as writer. Variety reports that the Men in Black star will helm a remake of Mark Rydell's 1972 western The Cowboys . The Cowboys , in turn based on a novel by William Dale Jennings, stars John Wayne and Bruce Dern and follows a rancher who is forced to assemble a group of novice ranch hands for a 400 mile cattle drive.
