New Delhi, Aug 20 (Ians) For the longest time, theatre actor and director Lushin Dubey was the youngest member in Delhi-based Barry John’s ‘Theatre Action Group’ (Tag) where she was part of mega productions by major playwrights. However, when she came back after a Master’s degree from the US where she learned about working with special needs children, she felt a certain pull towards contemporary social issues which demanded to be talked about.
Dubey came across Pinky Virani’s work ‘Aruna Story’ and approached her for the rights, but they had already been sold. “So I picked up her ‘Bitter Chocolate’ — I found it very relevant considering there was a need to talk about sexual abuse which had for long being pushed under the carpet but was now being talked about.”
The actor approached theatre director Arvind Gaur of New Delhi-based Asmita theatre group and they teamed up for the production.

On Saturday, June 3, Husain, 66, passed on, leaving behind a legacy of memorable stage productions.
He is survived by his wife and creative partner, Viraat Talwar, whom he met when she was a student of Lady Shri Ram College and had come to audition for a play (‘Dangerous Liaison’), and their two sons.
If ‘The Fifty Day War’ narrated the Kargil story on a scale that had not been attempted by anyone with an original Indian script on an Indian stage, ‘The Legend of Ram’, which was staged on a smaller scale in 1994, became the gold standard for theatrical spectacles when it was relaunched in 2004.
The production of ‘The Legend of Ram’ involved 19 outdoor sets spread over three acres and a cast of 35 actors playing different characters drawn from the epic, and a 100-member technical crew. The last show was staged in front of the then President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, on...

A demand for LSD made by one of his actors during the shoot of their film M Cream left director Agneya Singh in complete shock. After all, when the debutant director kept stressing on his actors to bring realism to their characters in their scenes, little had he imagined that it would get him into a far more complicated situation than he had bargained for.
Now, there are several instances when actors have gone that extra mile to get under the skin of their characters. So, actors taking to alcohol to play alcoholics, or actors following certain diets to look the part is quite acceptable and even encouraged by the filmmakers. However, Agneya Singh was at a loss of words when one of the actors on the sets of his upcoming film M Cream requested him to get them some LSD while shooting to infuse some realism in one of the crucial scenes.

In writer-director Agneya Singh’s first feature film, M Cream, four entitled, privileged Delhi twenty-somethings — Maggie (Auritra Ghosh), Niz (Raaghav Chanana), Jay (Ira Dubey) and Figs (Imaad Shah) head off on a road trip in search of a mythical drug, M Cream. Along the way, they have the opportunity to explore political issues, hook up with an aging American hippie (played by theatre director Barry John), attend a rave, take an LSD trip in an orange grove, write some poetry, and save some trees.
Singh’s film attempts to explore the effects of a changing India on his own young generation, and wants to show us how they, as a generation, navigate and make sense of those changes, and how they learn to adapt to the world – or, how they make their world adapt to them.
The film asks, in a sense, what it means to be a rebel or a revolutionary.

Chittagong is the real thing. Bravely bonafide and not afraid to show a humane side to the Britishers without taking away from the heroism of the Freedom Fighters, the film packs in a great deal of cinematic moments in less than two hours of playing time. Its beauty is more by decree than design, less...

On this day two decades ago a new Hindi film superstar emerged: Bollwood’s all-time favourite romantic hero Shah Rukh Khan, who debuted with “Deewana”. On completing 20 years, Srk says he just “got lucky” and admits he has made mistakes all along.
“Twenty uninterrupted years of serving. Not enough talent or looks or game plan. Thank you all. I guess I got lucky, lucky to be working all the time,” tweeted Shah Rukh, who entered filmdom with “Deewana”, which released June 25, 1992.
Superstardom, disappointment and controversies – Delhi guy Srk has seen it all in his celebrityhood.
For Shah Rukh, it’s been two decades in Bollywood, but his tryst with showbiz began in 1988, the year he started his journey with TV series “Fauji”, after being trained at The Barry John’s Acting Studio. Next year he featured in another successful show “Circus” and “Doosra Keval”.Read More...

Following on from the full length trailer that Paramount / Marvel released last week, we’ve got a few new images from their new movie, Captain America: The First Avenger. One of the images (that would be the explosive one!) shows Hayley Atwell from when they were shooting in Manchester and is one of the first images that we put up for the movie last year. You can see the new image below or click here to see Atwell from another angle in the photo take by Barry John.
The next image shows Atwell and conducting a scene in Surrey, another place where I got to visit to grab some photos from Captain America. You can see the photos I got from my visit here. I think I just missed the filming though unfortunately but the set was pretty much all still there.
The third image I believe we’ve seen...

When, when, when? This is the question Captain America fans have been asking themselves in regards to a picture of their beloved super hero. We've seen some images but we all want to see the man in an official - or unofficial - set photo sporting his patriotic costume.Well, we're at least getting closer to it. Instead of pics of some fat stuntman in a Captain America outfit, we finally got a picture of Chris himself, standing around on set wondering when he's going to be able to do his next set of preacher curls. There's also a cool video clip taken by some dude during the filming of a scene where a car explodes, which actually looks pretty badass. And after that, we see pics of a shootout taken by photographer Barry John. The pics show Haley Atwill as Peggy Carter firing back at the people in the vehicle.

***Update*** Barry John has just sent us a few more images from this scene which show it is indeed Atwell. Check out the extra photos in the gallery below:
Yesterday I posted a rather cool video from the set of Captain America which showed extras / stuntmen running from a building followed by a car blowing up. It was rather cool! This morning, the Daily Mail and Captain America Filming in Manchester (Photos courtesy of Barry John – barryjohnphotography.com) have posted some new images with one which apparently shows the first sighting of Hayley Atwell who plays Peggy Carter in the movie. Unfortunately the shot is quite far away but we have no reason to doubt them.
Captain America: The First Avenger has been shooting in the UK for a while now. We got to visit a set in Surrey, it them moved in and around London and is now shooting up in Manchester.

More shots have emerged from the shoot of Captain America, including a first glimpse of Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter…
In the midst of Manchester, the shoot for The First Avenger: Captain America is continuing, and eagle-eyed snappers are continuing to pick up more shots of the ongoing production.
This time, thanks to photographer Barry John, we can, amongst the new pictures, get a first look at Hayley Atwell, who is playing Peggy Carter in the film. And she's shooting a gun at a car. Don't mess with her.
Furthermore, a couple of new set pictures too have popped up at the Daily Mail. And we've got a small collection of the new shots here.
The film itself is shooting for a little while yet, before everyone heads back to the States to try and get it ready in time for its summer 2011 release.

Tere Bin Laden
In a film tradition where comedies rarely evolve into satires, Tere Bin Laden (Tbl) signifies a refreshing change. It does what Nato hasn’t been able to do in 9 years; disarm the numero uno terrorist. It strips off Bin Laden’s carefully crafted persona – conjured, in equal measures, by his own video dispatches and the western media - by making him an object of ridicule and laughter. But that’s just one part of it. The other, and more important, bit is its denigration of the American campaign in the Af-Pak region that it tries to legitimise in the name of Bin Laden, a MacGuffin, for all practical purposes.
But before I go any further with the film, I’d like to talk about a bit about a few things that are, in one way or the other, related to Tbl.

Tere Bin Laden is not your typical B-Town fare. Don’t expect lavish song-and-dance routines, crying, car chases, damsels in distress and villians. Well, it is a comedy, but not the average run-of-the-mill kind. It’s a spoof on America and its paranoia of terrorism. The story revolves around an ambitious young reporter.
