Simon McQuoid’s 2021 feature directorial debut with the martial arts fantasy film Mortal Kombat has certainly created a splash among fans but it was far from having an impressive box office gross. Still, New Line Cinema alongside Atomic Monster and Broken Road Productions is bringing a sequel to the first movie with Warner Brothers distributing the movie.
Sisi Stringer as Mileena in Mortal Kombat
Mortal Kombat 2 hype is quite promising as the movie will bring back the essence of the action-adventure fighting video game series, Mortal Kombat. However, fans have one subtle demand for the studio asking the makers not to repeat one critical mistake in the sequel of the action movie.
Mortal Kombat 2 Will Be “Way Bigger” Hiroyuki Sanada in Mortal Kombat
The preparation of the movie following the announcement has been long, perhaps, this time Warner Brothers are expecting more appealing sequences embedded into the narrative.

Exclusive: Judy Craymer would just love it if Barbie filmmaker Greta Gerwig could just make herself available to complete the Mamma Mia! movie trilogy.
“Hey, Greta, if you’re free to do anymore projects…” jokes Craymer, the driving force that has kept the “Money, Money, Money” pouring into the box office for musical Mamma Mia!, featuring the songs of Swedish pop stars Abba, for a quarter of a century.
Saturday night will mark an incredible milestone for a show that has taken over $5.685 billion at the box-office worldwide in ticket sales and is responsible for a further $17 billion in supplementary expenditure from spending on hotels, restaurants, transport and merchandising globally in the 25 years since opening night at the Cameron Macintosh-owned Prince Edward Theatre on April 6, 1999.
Those figures do not include the hundreds of millions of dollars that movie offshoots Mamma Mia! and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again have amassed.

It is so common to hear actors say they had a blast filming a movie that you're allowed to be cynical when they talk about how the cast became like a family. The big exception, of course, is the "Mamma Mia" movies. Every scene from the "Mamma Mia" movies exudes fun. Sure, they are not the most visually vibrant, and the scripts have the complexity of a paper airplane. That being said, it's hard not to get caught up in the excitement, the dancing, the burning passion exuding from Cher and Andy Garcia singing "Fernando."

Actors claiming they had a ball during production on a movie is a common refrain on the publicity circuit. That chipper tone is so prevalent that it's hard not to be cynical when you hear stories about cast members becoming close friends or bonding like families on set (less so when the bonding occurs via mutual suffering perhaps). However, in the case of "Mamma Mia!," it's easy to buy that its stars had a grand ol' time during filming.
In fact, if the final product is any indication, they probably enjoyed themselves a little too much.

Everybody loves Abba — and that includes every race, gender, religion and every kind of person under the sun. That said, it’s no wonder that Mamma Mia!, a Broadway show that turned into Universal movie musical and a sequel that garnered box office success and acclaim among the masses. As the nation’s longest-running professional theater of color producing Asian American artistic work., the Los Angeles-based theater group East West Players (Ewp) saw an opportunity to not only put on a production of the popular jukebox musical for their 53rd anniversary season but to switch things up with a majority Asian cast.
In a time when Hollywood sees a craving and demand for inclusive casting, East West Players answered the call to action by doing something that many would be considered bold: cast a musical that traditionally stars white actors with non-white actors. In other words, East West Players Hamilton‘d Mamma Mia!

“Mamma Mia!” is still going strong 20 years after its April 6, 1999, debut at London’s Prince Edward Theatre. The longevity is a testament to the band Abba and to the persistence of producer Judy Craymer, director Phyllida Lloyd and writer Catherine Johnson. The stage musical opened with low expectations; in 1983, another tribute to the Swedish quartet, named “Abbacadabra,” closed eight weeks after its debut. Plus, “Mamma Mia!” had been in workshops for 18 months, with Johnson the third writer on the project (she did seven drafts). Eight months after the debut, Variety reported that the show was “a financial gusher,” making back its £3 million ($4.8 million) cost in 27 weeks, and boasting an advance of nearly $13 million. The stage musical has earned an estimated $2 billion, and that’s not counting income from the two films. When it opened, Lloyd said: “We hope to create pure pleasure. We’re not splitting the atom.”

Before it was a globally successful movie franchise, “Mamma Mia!” was just one woman’s passion project. British theater impresario Judy Craymer first imagined “Mamma Mia!” in the ’80s, eventually spending years trying to persuade former Abba members Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus to let her make something out of their deep songbook. Her efforts finally yielded the eighth longest-running Broadway show in history, a 2008 movie that over half a billion dollars worldwide, and now a sequel — “Mamma Mia: Here We Again” — poised to keep the franchise alive.
“I definitely never had a business plan,” Craymer said, reflecting on the 20 years of progress. “I’ve always taken it one day at a time.” The challenge started anew after the first “Mamma Mia!” movie took off, and talk about turning the film into a franchise kicked up. As early as the fall of 2008, just months after the first film’s release,...

The cynics are defeated; Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again has won the war. On track for a near-$40m opening weekend, critics couldn’t escape if they wanted to, and audiences have promised to love Abba jukebox musicals forevermore.
It’s another remarkable achievement for Littlestar chief Judy Craymer, who produced both films in the expanding Mamma Mia! Cinematic Universe (with Gary Goetzman) and has been the architect of bringing Abba’s music to the stage and screen for more than 20 years. She had spent a decade convincing Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus to trust her with the rights to Abba’s songs before Mamma Mia! debuted on the London stage in 1999. When I went to see the show on stage earlier this month, it was clear that interest hasn’t abated in the 19 years that have followed.
Still, mounting a sequel to the 2008 feature film couldn’t have been easy.

It’s still a great weekend at the box office here, with both Universal’s Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again and Sony’s Equalizer 2 both over-performing besting their tracking, especially the latter.
The Ol Parker-directed original ABBA musical is looking at an estimated No. 1 win, with $37.3M while the Denzel Washington sequel scored $13.4M yesterday (including Thursday’s $3.1M), with an amazing $33.7M three-day.
One of the reasons why we’re seeing Mamma Mia 2 lower than the $40M+ figure we were spotting yesterday is because sometimes it’s hard for box office analysts to project off advance ticket sales, which in this pic’s case is fueled by the female demo. When are they exactly going to the movies? One thing is for sure, and that’s this bubble gum musical will have long legs this summer into the fall. The...

Dave Boyle looks at the Co-operative's long standing relationship with cinema and how it is embracing change
The Electric Picture House in Wotton is unusual for several reasons. It's not that it's got a famous patron in Catherine Johnson, writer of Mamma Mia, who grew up nearby and came to see her film one day at the 100-seat venue.
It's not that volunteers run the whole show or even that with fewer than 6,000 residents, it's one of the smallest communities with a permanent, dedicated cinema in its own building, showing around 10 shows each week.
What makes Wotton pretty special is that it's one of a handful of co-operative cinemas in the country, owned not by a charitable trust or private company but by its audience, its volunteers and its original investors. Its profits are donated back to the community via the Wotton Recreation Trust.
The co-operative movement has a longstanding relationship with film.

Abi Morgan nominated for The Iron Lady and Bridget O'Connor posthumously for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
On Sunday, the flashbulbs will pop at Brad and George; the pundits shall scrap over the relative merits of Hugo and The Help. And, away from the limelight, Bafta will be quietly making history. For the first time, British women are in contention to win both the best adapted and best original screenplay.
In the former, Bridget O'Connor is up for the Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy script she co-wrote with her husband, Peter Straughan. And in the latter, Abi Morgan, the woman behind The Iron Lady, is battling Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo, whose Bridesmaids screenplay is current frontrunner. This year, an unprecedented number of women are vying for writing trophies.
Sadly, O'Connor is also the second woman to be Bafta-nominated posthumously (the first was the costume designer Marit Allen who won for La Vie en Rose...

A starring role opposite Morgan Freeman is a deserved Hollywood break for British actor Adjoa Andoh. She talks to Kate Kellaway
The audition for Nelson Mandela's chief of staff in Clint Eastwood's new film Invictus was down to three actors – two South Africans and a British Ghanaian – Adjoa Andoh. When she got the call – "Mr Eastwood wants you" – she danced for joy round her living room in south London. Andoh could not be more deserving of this breakthrough into Hollywood. She is one of our most talented yet unsung black actors. She was Condoleezza Rice in David Hare's Stuff Happens at the National Theatre. She's had lead roles at the Almeida and the Royal Court. She's even been in Doctor Who…
In Invictus she is wonderful opposite Morgan Freeman's Nelson Mandela. The film's opening is timed to coincide with the 20th anniversary of Mandela's release.

Chicago – It’s the most wonderful time of the year for Blu-Ray and DVD collectors. Every holiday season, studios pull out their most beloved films, polish up the picture, maybe add a special feature or two, and usually throw in a few collectibles for a gift set. Recent gift set releases include limited edition boxes for “Gone With the Wind,” “The Wizard of Oz,” and “Christmas Vacation”. The gleefully campy “Mamma Mia! The Movie” seems like a perfect fit and “The Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! More Gift Set” should make fans of the movie happy but is clearly the lowest rung on the ladder when it comes to these season releases.
Blu-Ray Rating: 2.5/5.0
Before we even get to the movie, what qualifies as a gift set? With recent releases including such unusual items as a watch (“Wizard of Oz”) and fake snow (“Christmas Vacation”), don’t you think a film as weird as “Mamma Mia!

Let me ask you something. Given the opportunity, would you decline to work on a franchise you think is silly, or would you bite the bullet and try to start a revolt from the inside? That's something I wonder about David Slade directing the third Twilight movie, which apparently promises to be a little different. In this edition, we'll also take a look at the latest District 9 controversy, a Mamma Mia! without Abba, and the zombie Patrick Swayze that never was.
The Good
• Roger Corman is getting an Oscar! Can you believe it? The Academy has decided to give the King of B-movies an honorary award for his memorable works, alongside actress Lauren Bacall, producer John Calley and cinematographer Gordon Willis. Maybe next year, they can give one to Russ Meyer.
• One of my most anticipated films at the moment, The Prophet, has just been picked as France's entry for the 2010 Academy Awards.
