One of the most popular directors in the world, Zack Snyder is known for titles like “300”, “Watchmen”, and “Justice League”. His films revel in slow-motion action sequences, grand operatic themes, and a dark, brooding aesthetic.

Given the underwhelming reviews of the duology, rumors had been running of the series shutting down. However, an industry insider recently debunked this particular rumor.

It’s been seven years since the release of Atomic Blonde, the action thriller starring Charlize Theron as top-level MI6 spy Lorraine Broughton. As the film was a box-office and critical success, it begs the question: where the hell is the sequel? Atomic Blonde screenwriter Kurt Johnstad isn’t sure what’s going on with a followup, but he recently told CinemaBlend that he always envisioned Lorraine’s story as a trilogy.
“To me, I always said that’s a trilogy,” Johnstad said. “You could tell three of those, and I hope they crack it. If they need some help, they know where to find me.“
Charlize Theron confirmed that a sequel was in the works in 2018, with her production company, Denver & Delilah Productions, heading up the project. Johnstad hasn’t heard anything from them, saying that it’s possible “they may have gone to another writer, they may have a draft.

Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver is a drastically more watchable film than its predecessor, which spent so much time place-setting that it forgot to tell an actual story. The Scargiver is, essentially, the propulsive second and third acts that Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire was missing. All the heroes that our heroine, Kora (Sofia Boutella), collected in the first film have finally arrived on the farming planet of Veldt, ready to help defend it against the encroaching fascist armies of the Motherworld. From here, it’s basically the fast and loose Seven Samurai redux that A Child of Fire had been hinting at from minute one, with our legendary heroes helping to prepare this village of pacifist farmers to go to war.

What was initially a plan for a Star Wars film rejected by Disney seems to have transformed into the worst flop in the career of director and writer Zack Snyder, as the recently released Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, the sequel to Rebel Moon, is once again panned by critics, with the ratings listing it as Snyder’s worst movie – yes, worse than even the horrible Sucker Punch and the first part of Rebel Moon. And while Snyder’s ambition cannot be denied, and we can expect the extended R-rated cuts to receive better ratings, it seems that Rebel Moon will be, on an overall level, considered a failure.

Spoiler Alert: This review reveals details of both Rebel Moon movies.
Slow-motion scenes that sputter story pacing? Check.
Poorly developed characters? Check.
Plot holes bigger than the Milky Way? Check.
… And we’re back with part two of Zack Snyder’s Netflix space opera Rebel Moon -Part Two: The Scargiver. You might not be a shock to hear this, but part two manages to be worse than part one. Its biggest offense? Nothing happening for way too long. The film stars Sofia Boutella, Djimon Hounsou, Ed Skrein, Michiel Huisman, Doona Bae, Staz Nair, Elise Duffy and Anthony Hopkins as the voice of Jimmy the robot. While this is a capable cast of actors, they have nothing to work with. I wonder if the reason Snyder hasn’t delivered a comprehensible script in some time is because he wears too many hats as writer, producer, director and cinematographer on most of his films?...

Wheat. So much wheat.
That’s the main takeaway from the second installment of Zack Snyder’s interplanetary space saga that, depending on your perspective, either pays homage to or shamelessly rips off previous epics ranging from Seven Samurai to Star Wars. If you add up the running times of both Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver and the first film, it amounts to well over four hours. It’s not surprising, considering that this one features a sequence in which the characters harvest wheat for what seems longer than a Swedish art film. And I know that the setting is supposed to be an alternate universe, but considering that it features space ships and technically advanced weaponry, it seems a bit absurd that farming hasn’t advanced beyond scythes. Although the extremely buff performers look damn good wielding them.
Such musings are unavoidable when confronted with this would-be epic,...

A new movie just came out from Zack Snyder, the divisive but provocative director who has inspired legions of passionate and loyal fans online, but it hardly feels like anyone outside of the internet knows or even cares much. Perhaps that's the peril of falling into the streaming trap, where name-brand talents receive sky-high budgets for productions that no traditional studio is willing to support ... only to be promptly forgotten once its brief time in Netflix's weekly Top 10 reports comes and goes. Full disclosure: It's downright strange to have been able to see "Rebel Moon: Part Two - The Scargiver" in a theater and base this review on that experience, particularly when the vast majority of those reading this will never have the same opportunity. Yet it's stranger still that the film we've received, from a visionary auteur whose battles with corporate overlords during his tenure in the DC...

Following a limited theatrical release, director Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire (read our review Here) was released through the Netflix streaming service back in December. Viewers will get the chance to find out what happens in the second half of the story when Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver reaches the service this Friday – and while doing press for that film, Snyder confirmed that a Rebel Moon 3 is already in the works. But he doesn’t intend to wrap this franchise up as a trilogy. In the end, he thinks there could be a total of 4 to 6 Rebel Moon movies!
Speaking with Radio Times, “We absolutely have the story (for Rebel Moon 3) all set, we did all that work. We wrote a treatment for the movie so we’ll see how we go ahead. … I guess (a total of) 4 makes sense. 4 or 6 movies,...

Zack Snyder continues his Netflix partnership with his space opera Rebel Moon and I was thrilled to get the chance to chat with him about it. Whether you love or hate him, you can’t deny Zack Snyder’s impact on film during his career. From 300 to Watchmen to his time in the now-extinct Dceu, he has a style all his own; you can easily tell when you’re watching a Snyder film.
Rebel Moon: Part 2 – The Scargiver is the conclusion to Zack Snyder’s space opera. The story came from Snyder, who co-wrote the screenplay with Kurt Johnstad and Shay Hatten. Everyone who’s seen even one Zack Snyder movie knows that the filmmaker has a very specific and, in many ways, unique approach to his movies. Snyder is a visionary for some and a failure for others, but he doesn’t leave you indifferent, that is certain. And while we could discuss many of his projects in light of these comments, we are going to focus on his current project, the two-part sci-fi epic Rebel Moon, whose second part is going to be released soon.
Snyder has sat down to discuss the second version of his movie. Namely, we know that an R-rated Director’s Cut of both parts will be released by Netflix at a later date, while the two initial versions we’ve seen are reduced PG-13 versions. This is nothing unusual for Snyder, who has revealed that the R-rated cuts are truly brutal and very different from the original versions.

Zack Snyder’s ‘Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver’ Releases First Trailer Ahead of April Premiere!

Netflix has revealed the official trailer for the second part of Zack Snyder’s space epic Rebel Moon.
The streamer dropped the trailer for Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver on Monday (below).
Part Two is being released April 19 — four months after Part One, which ended on a cliffhanger.
Writer-director Snyder previously told The Hollywood Reporter in a recent cover story that he hopes to eventually make a third film as well. In between, there will be a graphic novel, a podcast and a photo book.
Rebel Moon co-writer Kurt Johnstad previously told THR of Part Two: “I would say that it’s definitely its own movie, and it’s a very different movie. It’s not an assembly of the team. Zack Snyder is a prolific filmmaker, and he pushes his creative muscles with every new film he makes. Not all his choices pay dividends, and some of his films have been severely panned by critics. However, he does not let the naysayers deter him from making the stories he is passionate about telling, and he has built up a loyal fanbase over the years.

The chatter of Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon had just enough buzz to it for the eventual December 2023 release to be disappointing. Visually, it looked about as mesmerizing as you’d expect from Snyder, but A Child of Fire lacked in the storytelling, characters and originality departments, with pretty much everyone noticing how much it blatantly ripped off better sci-fi franchises (you know the ones…). Finding those who loved the movie and even anticipate the follow-up, next month’s The Scargiver, is much harder – like finding the exact droids you’re looking for – but star Sofia Boutella will continue to defend Rebel Moon.
In a new interview with Vulture, Sofia Boutella said she came prepared for Rebel Moon haters, saying, “I always thought that I was fully armed to take on those punches, and then I read the critics that came down on Rebel Moon and it really affected me.

Rebel Moon Part One: A Child of Fire (read our review Here), the first part of director Zack Snyder’s two-part sci-fi epic, has been available to watch on the Netflix streaming service for over a month, and now we’re getting ready for the April 19th release of the follow-up Rebel Moon Part Two: The Scargiver. With its release date just two months away, Rebel Moon Part Two has received its official rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board: PG-13 for sequences of strong violence, brief strong language and suicide. Also earning a PG-13 rating this week is the Blumhouse horror film Imaginary, which reaches theatres on March 8th. Imaginary got its PG-13 for some violent content, drug material and language.
Neither one of these ratings comes as a surprise. Many Blumhouse movies, from Insidious to Five Nights at Freddy’s, M3GAN, and Night Swim have PG-13 ratings. As for Rebel Moon,...

During an interview with Yahoo, Zack Snyder was asked what fans can expect from the Rebel Moon extended cut. “Way more brutal. More bizarre,” Snyder teased. “Verhoeven-esque. More RoboCop than you know… in the way that it uses violence as another character. And there’s a lot of sex in it, and sci-fi fantasy.“

Rebel Moon co-writer Kurt Johnstad also spilled a few details on the extended cut while speaking with THR. “There’s definitely a lot more story at the front of the movie,” Johnstad said. “You’re definitely going to get a lot more Jimmy and see his arc, and you...

Rebel Moon co-writers Kurt Johnstad and Zack Snyder go way back. Years and years before they struck gold with 300 (2006), Johnstad met Snyder at a time when they were both cutting their teeth in the world of music videos, and in 1997, Snyder raised the idea of Rebel Moon in its embryonic form of Seven Samurai in space. And once they both broke into the film industry in the early 2000s, Johnstad and Snyder began to brainstorm potential characters and scenes.
Johnstad and Snyder’s partnership then led to the 300 franchise and various other unproduced scripts. In 2012, Snyder pitched the idea as a more grown-up version of Star Wars to Lucasfilm, but when Disney acquired the company, Snyder knew that his vision wouldn’t see the light of day. He then entertained the idea of a TV series with producer Eric Newman, but it wasn’t until Snyder’s dramatic...

Rebel Moon Part One: A Child of Fire (read our review Here), the first part of director Zack Snyder’s two-part sci-fi epic, was released through the Netflix streaming service last week… and a few days later, a teaser trailer for the follow-up Rebel Moon Part Two: The Scargiver arrived online to give us a preview of the second half of the story, which is set to start streaming on April 19th. When the trailer for Part One was released, Snyder did a “trailer breakdown” video for Netflix, and now that the teaser for Part Two is available, Snyder has sat down for another breakdown video. One of the many characters introduced in Rebel Moon is Jimmy, a sentient robot who once served under a king centuries ago. Although Jimmy has a major impact on the story, we don’t get to see all that much of him, but that will change in the upcoming extended cut and sequel.
Rebel Moon co-writer Kurt Johnstad told Variety that there’s still a lot of Jimmy’s story to tell. “Jimmy has a much bigger story in those extended cuts and certainly in the second movie,” Johnstad said. “It’s a little bit like Jimmy goes from this sentient robot to really becoming a little more human, and he goes a little feral. When everybody is being collected and the team is getting built, he’s running around in the woods being like a feral creature and hunting and sitting by the brook and catching fish and doing...

Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon has proven to be a big success for Netflix, easily becoming the number-one movie on the streaming service, but the reviews have been rather divisive. Rebel Moon currently stands as one of Snyder’s lowest-rated movies among critics, but fans have found more to like about the sci-fi epic.
Rebel Moon co-writer Kurt Johnstad spoke with Variety about the negative reviews the film has received.
“I don’t read the reviews, I never have,” Johnstad said. “Critics have a job to do. We live in a democracy. Everybody gets to vote. If people watch the film, they’ll have an experience, and they will either enjoy it or they won’t. It’s flavors of ice cream. In my career of 20 years doing this, reviews have never equated to performance. A movie will either perform or it won’t. People will either love it and be connected to it,...

Spoiler Alert: This story contains major spoilers for “Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire,” now streaming on Netflix.
Kurt Johnstad and Zack Snyder first started talking about creating “Rebel Moon” in 1997. In college, Snyder came up with the idea of a “Dirty Dozen” movie set in space, and the two would discuss their favorite films as a launching point for what eventually became the sci-fi world of “Rebel Moon.”
“’What’s your favorite science-fiction movie?’ ‘Oh, ‘Star Wars,’’ or I would say ‘Seven Samurai.’ We would always hit these really cinematic wavelengths, certainly as a child with cinema who went to the movies. All of those influences, we can’t deny the impact,” Johnstad says.
After a long process that involved Snyder initially pitching the movie to Lucasfilm as a “Seven Samurai”-inspired “Star Wars” story, their vision finally came to life with Netflix’s two-part space epic...

It’s no secret that Zach Snyder has big plans for Rebel Moon. In addition to the two Netflix movies, Snyder is also planning an animated series, an animated comic, and a narrative podcast, and he told Entertainment Weekly that he also has an idea for a Rebel Moon spinoff focusing on the younger days of Balisarius.
Balisarius is the tyrant in charge of the Imperium, the military force featured in Rebel Moon. The role is played by Fra Fee, but fans might notice that Balisarius looks to be quite a bit older than the actor playing him; It turns out that’s all by design.
“This hasn’t been confirmed, but I was hoping if there were ever a spinoff, like a TV show or something, about the younger days of Balisarius, that I would love a young actor to play that part. So we just aged him for this,...

This article contains major spoilers for "Rebel Moon."
Zack Snyder has never been a sentimental filmmaker. He's taken plenty of criticisms for being "edgy" or "ruthless" over the years, especially after movies with high kill counts like "300," "Man of Steel," and even "Army of the Dead." So when he began work on "Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire" (you can read my review for /Film here) and it became clear that he would be focusing on yet another ensemble cast in the midst of a war, everyone should've braced themselves for the likelihood that at least some of these heroes wouldn't make it out alive. True to form, that's exactly what happens by the end of the gritty, hyper-stylized film.
Sofia Boutella's humble leader Kora and her ragtag group of mercenaries, bounty hunters, fugitives, and other unsavory outcasts emerge victorious over the fearsome might of the Imperium...

The Msg Sphere in Las Vegas is getting a makeover for Netflix‘s release of Zack Snyder’s new sci-fi epic Rebel Moon. The massive dome, equipped with 1.2 million LED lights, is consistently making headlines thanks to several clever promos taking advantage of the display’s visibility in America’s Adult Disneyland. Snyder’s films are always an event for his dedicated fanbase, and Netflix is sparing no expense to promote the filmmaker’s Star Wars-like franchise starter.
The Rebel Moon Msg Sphere display features Jimmy, a character from Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire, voiced by Anthony Hopkins and played by Dustin Ceithamer. Jc-1435, known more simply as Jimmy, was a sentient machine that, centuries ago, defended a since-slain king as part of the Mechanics Miltarium. As the promo plays across the gargantuan structure, Jimmy surveys the Divorce Capitol of the World before reaching out to crowds with his mechanical hand.

The confused nature of the theatrical window for streamer-owned films reached a new level of absurdity with Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire. Not only is this blockbuster behemoth merely the first installment of a two-part film—the second, subtitled The Scargiver, is set to be released in April—it’s a truncated version of its maker’s substantially longer preferred cut, which makes the film two-thirds of one-half of a story.
Rebel Moon began life as a Star Wars project before Snyder’s concept was turned down, and the resulting film often sounds as though the director and co-writers Kurt Johnsta and Shay Hatten did little more to their draft than perform a find-and-replace for any terms trademarked by Disney. The film even piggybacks off of George Lucas’s indebtedness to Kurosawa Akira: Its protagonist, Kora (Sofia Boutella), is a disillusioned veteran of the “Motherworld” autocracy who,...

Directed by Zack Snyder, who also co-wrote the script, Rebel Moon is the first part of a planned space epic that’s set to span at least one initial trilogy, followed by a further trilogy of sequels. Part Two – The Scargiver, has already been filmed, but it remains to be seen if the third part will make it to the screen, as the first part of the trilogy is decidedly disappointing.

As divisive as his films tend to be, many can agree that Zack Snyder's career has always been that of a trendsetter. When the filmmaker's distinct grasp of visual style and flair (developed while working in the music video scene early on) brought Hollywood knocking at his door, Snyder spent the next several years bringing various concepts to life that most considered "unfilmable." His groundbreaking adaptation of the graphic novel "300," which arguably redefined blockbuster action in pop culture throughout the early aughts, directly led to Snyder getting his hands on the holy grail of "Watchmen" in 2009. Although superhero movies moving forward would generally opt for the airy tone of Marvel's "Iron Man" rather than Snyder's grand and operatic take, the seeds were planted for the DC superhero world that would consume him for much of the next decade -- and eventually lead to darker, more cynical, and self-reflexively...

Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon-Part 1: Child of Fire his latest foray into science fiction, ambitiously attempts to weave a tale of interstellar rebellion and personal redemption. Written by Snyder, and co-written by Kurt Johnstad and Shay Hatten, the film struggles under the weight of its own aspirations, lacking the distinct personality often associated with Snyder’s works. The film delivers on the visual aesthetics, the film falters in delivering a compelling story. The film stars Sofia Boutella, Michiel Huisman, Charlie Hunnam, Dijmon Hounsou, Ed Skrein, Ray Fisher, Cleopatra Coleman, Fra Fee, Doona Bae, and Staz Nair.
Stranded on a distant moon, the enigmatic Kora (Boutella) finds refuge in a community of farmers. Her life takes a dramatic turn when the oppressive Regent Balisarius (Fee) and his aide, Admiral Noble (Skrein), target the settlement for trading with Darrian and Devra Bloodaxe (Fisher and Coleman), who are rebel leaders opposed by the dominant Motherworld.

In 2021’s zombie heist thriller Army of the Dead, that sneaky Zack Snyder tricked us into believing he had rediscovered his sense of humor, a keen understanding of the fact that trashy fun and gory action mayhem need not be mutually exclusive. But just seconds into the leaden sci-fi saga Rebel Moon Part One: A Child of Fire, it’s clear the director is back to indulging his worst tendency for self-serious bombast. That opening features the sonorous voice of Anthony Hopkins droning away over a gloomy spacescape: “On the Motherworld, blah, blah, blah …” It’s a glop of garbled narrative foundation that makes the opening text crawl on the original Star Wars look like a haiku.
The epochal George Lucas creation that spawned a billion Disney spinoffs appears to be very much on Snyder’s mind in this major undertaking for Netflix, with a reported budget for the two-parter of $165 million.

Zack Snyder may have his hands full launching Rebel Moon, his sci-fi fantasy film that Netflix unveils Dec. 22, but that doesn’t mean the energetic filmmaker isn’t busy developing other projects.
Enter Blood and Ashes. The film began life as a sequel to 300 and 300: Rise of an Empire, and was one of the last projects Snyder worked on before officially leaving Warner Bros. after the debacle that was Justice League. But what he turned in was quite different from a 300 sequel.
Blood and Ashes, which he partially wrote while shooting Army of the Dead for Netflix in 2019, ended up focusing on the relationship between Alexander the Great and his second in command, Haphaestion. It was a gay love story that was also an ancient Greek war epic, one he said then-Warners executive Courtenay Valenti liked and championed.

But she soon becomes their only hope for survival when the tyrannical Regent Balisarius (Fra Fee) and his cruel emissary, Admiral Noble (Ed Skrein), discover the farmers have unwittingly sold their crops to the Bloodaxes (Cleopatra Coleman and Ray Fisher) — leaders of a fierce group of insurgents hunted by the Motherworld.
