Horror Channel FrightFest takes place in London this weekend. Here's our pick of films to look out for...
Summer’s almost over and what better way to welcome in the spooky season than by hiding from the heat in a darkened room, with five days of wall-to-wall horror? Yep, it’s August Bank Holiday and that means the 18th annual London Horror Channel FrightFest is upon us. For some, this is a familiar pilgrimage. Veterans will be used to bloodshot eyes, numbness in the spine, a lack of nutrition and an acute anxiousness every time there’s a loud noise. For others, it may be their first visit and these are things to look forward to. Either way, FrightFest promises probably the biggest, purest, uncut dose of horror you can endure without going insane, complete with special guests, world premieres, live events and at least a couple of parties.

These days, Jonathan Frakes is a captain in his own right.
The former Star Trek: The Next Generation actor and director makes his living mostly behind the scenes with a plethora of directing gigs, notably on The Glades, Leverage, Burn Notice and even V, to keep on fresh sci-fi.
Jonathan's latest gig is to direct tomorrow night's episode of the Community TV series Bar Karma, an interactive experience engineered by The Sims creator Will Wright and Spike TV founder Albie Hecht, where the internet community literally creates the story for each individual episode.
For those unfamiliar with the show, the official description reads:
“Set at a mystical watering hole at the edge of the universe, Bar Karma stars William Sanderson (True Blood, Lost, Deadwood) as James, the 20,000 year-old bartender, Matthew Humphreys (Obsessed, Big Love, The Forgotten) as bar owner Doug Jones, and Cassie Howarth (Deranged High, Deathclock) as the lone waitress,...

Sci-Fi Squad writes some really interesting news that comes in via a new interview on BBC Radio, "[Guillermo] Del Toro let loose that he's already cast friend (and collaborator) Doug Jones as Frankenstein in his planned adaptation of the classic tale fro Universal, and will begin testing things like make-up within the next few weeks -- though he admits (to Digital Spy) that he's "not in a hurry" and is perfectly fine shooting the film five or six years from now. 'You have one shot in your lifetime at these things and I don't want to do it the wrong way.' " The article doesn't specify if Jones will be playing Dr. Frankenstein or his beautiful creation.

I was surprised to hear that Tintin, Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg's adaptation of the Belgian comic strip, begins filming this week. This week! Hasn't this project been in development for so long you thought it would never be made? But this week Andy Serkis is preparing to step into the role of Captain Haddock, Tintin's hard-drinking but loyal best friend, even as his new movie, Inkheart, opens in theaters. I spoke to Serkis last week, and while we talked a lot about his villainous role in Inkheart, he was generous enough to talk about Tintin and his return as Gollum in Lord of the Rings as well. I've included those parts of our conversation below, which includes his thoughts on both those top-secret projects, working with Doug Jones on The Hobbit, and the rise of motion-capture filmmaking in general. He also mentioned that he starts filming his next project,...

Picturehouse has acquired North American rights to Guillermo Del Toro's fairy tale film Pan's Labyrinth. A fall release is anticipated. The cast also includes Mirabel Verdu (Y Tu Mama Tambien), Sergi Lopez (Dirty Pretty Things) and Doug Jones (Hellboy).
