The Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders once again will be the subject of an unscripted series — this time at Netflix.
The streamer says its show, titled America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, will premiere in the summer and counts Cheer and Last Chance U’s Greg Whiteley among its executive producers (he also directs). The Netflix series will debut some two-and-a-half years after the long-running Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team ended after 16 seasons on CMT.
Where the latter show often had the structure of a competition series, America’s Sweethearts — at least based on a brief teaser — looks to bring more of a polished, behind-the-scenes feel to its seven episodes. The show will chronicle the 2023-24 season for the cheerleaders and will “document the personal stories behind the uniforms,” according to Netflix’s description.

As GameSquare prepares to add a prominent esports organization to its list of properties, it is selling off a different company in the same field. The Texas-based media company, which is backed by Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, has sold Complexity Gaming back to its original owners in a $10.4 million deal.
Complexity Founder and former CEO Jason Lake is acquiring the esports org’s parent company, NextGen Tech, through an investor group named Global Esports Properties. “While it is bittersweet to sell Complexity, there is no one better suited to take over than Jason and his team,” GameSquare CEO Justin Kenna said in a statement.
GameSquare announced the Complexity sale as it prepared to close a blockbuster merger with noted gaming and entertainment company FaZe Clan. That deal has been approved by GameSquare’s shareholders and will be “closing shortly,” according to a news update shared on the GameSquare website.

The case now has a trial date, and if the plaintiffs are successful in the case it could lead to huge changes in how audiences watch NFL games.
Lawsuits are nothing new for the NFL. An entity as huge and worth as much money as the NFL is bound to attract attention, and to be sure it has earned legal scrutiny at times. The league has been facing a class-action lawsuit for the past nine years regarding its pricing and distribution of games on NFL Sunday Ticket, and depending on the outcome of the suit the NFL broadcasting landscape could undergo huge changes in the next few years.
The suit, representing more than 2 million individuals, as well as nearly 50,000 bars and restaurants is headed to trial on Feb. 22. NFL figures like Roger Goodell, Robert Kraft, and Jerry Jones are being called to testify. If plaintiffs are successful, NFL teams could...

Exclusive: Skydance Sports has closed a deal with Gary Ross to rewrite and direct Old Time Hockey, from an original screenplay written by Kevin Jakubowski. The film will be produced by Skydance Sports and Jeremy Latcham.
The original screenplay is set in the rust belt of Pennsylvania involving a high school hockey rivalry from the mid-’90s that gets re-kindled 25 years later.
Ross is no stranger to uplifting sports movies as he directed and wrote the hit horse racing pic Seabiscuit, which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. The four-time Oscar nominee has made a career out of writing and directing hit pics that include Pleasantville, The Hunger Games, and most recently Ocean’s 8 starring Sandra Bullock.
Jakubowski wrote the Black List feature screenplay 8-Bit Christmas which received both a PGA Award and Humanitas Prize nomination. His other credits include the screenplay for Assassination of a High School President,...

With an impressive subscriber total exceeding 238 million global customers, there’s no denying Netflix has the purchasing power to acquire a lot of assets. Most speculation surrounding mergers at the company centers on other acquiring external studios, but what about live sports?
Netflix’s co-ceo Ted Sarandos addressed that question during the company’s conference call to contextualize its second-quarter earnings report on Wednesday. He acknowledged that Netflix was adding more sports-related programming, but said that as far as live sports went, the company just isn’t quite there yet.

Skydance Sports, NFL Films and the Jerry Jones family are collaborating on what they call a “defining” docuseries about the Dallas Cowboys and the arc of Jones as the owner and builder of the franchise over 30-plus years.
As president and general manager, Jones is credited with engineering a massive turnaround that led to three Super Bowl titles in the 1990s. While the Lombardi Trophy has remained out of reach during the past quarter-century-plus, Jones and his family have shepherded the rise of the Cowboys to the status of the most valuable franchise in professional sports.
Using never-before-seen footage from the NFL Films archive, the as-yet-untitled series will trace Jones’ rise from the son of an Arkansas community store owner to the top of the pro sports heap. Interviews will feature ex-Cowboys players Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith and Deion Sanders; former head coaches Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer...

When a topic gets the Oliver Stone treatment, it typically means that it's a controversial subject getting a cinematic deep dive into its origins. He's seemingly left no stone unturned, exploring topics like 1980s greed ("Wall Street"), the Vietnam War ("Born on the Fourth of July" and "Platoon"), the Kennedy assassination ("JFK"), and illegal surveillance ("Snowden").
For two decades, the director had professional football on his radar, dating back to an early 1980s project titled "The Linebacker," which would have starred Charles Bronson. In 1999, Stone's vision of the NFL finally came to fruition with "Any Given Sunday." By then, the game had changed exponentially from the time Charles Bronson was an A-lister in Hollywood. Player side hustles were replaced by multi-million-dollar advertising deals. The allure of "Monday Night Football" was supplanted by around-the-clock coverage on cable and SportsCenter highlights almost on the hour. What did that exposure mean for the modern athlete?...

It is almost impossible to talk about Jemele Hill today without talking about Donald Trump. Which is the opposite of how Jemele Hill would have it, understandably. “If the lead line in my obituary is ‘She once tweeted that the president is a white supremacist,’ I will see my life as a professional disappointment,” Hill says. Former ESPN SportsCenter anchor Jemele Hill will launch a podcast exclusively on Spotify, joining a growing roster of talent who are lending their authentic voices and perspectives to the streaming service.
Dubbed Unbothered, Hill’s podcast will air twice a week, starting in March.
“I have a lot of things to say, and there’s not a lot of platforms that give you the freedom to not just be thoughtful but to come with a realness that not everyone is prepared to accept,” said Hill in remarks this morning at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
Hill announced her departure from ESPN in September. She attracted national headlines when she tweeted that “Donald Trump is a white supremacist who has largely surrounded himself w/ other white supremacists.” Two days later, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders called the remarks “a fireable offense” and “one of the more outrageous comments that anyone could make.

In a season-saving Week 10 victory, the Dallas Cowboys beat the inconsistent Philadelphia Eagles 27-20 in the City of Brotherly Love on the Comcast-owned network’s flagship pro football show. Ezekiel Elliott propelled the win that the Jerry Jones-owned Texas crew needed.
25 touches.
187 yards from scrimmage.

However, in another final tally, the big-draw matchup split the difference in the ratings, drawing a 13.3/22 in metered market results as the NFL attempts to maintain traction over last year’s ratings struggles.
Now, even with the Cowboys’ nationwide fanbase, no one really expected last night’s Snf to top the ratings wattage of the superstar quarterback...

National Football League owners reportedly want Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos to join the club by purchasing the Seattle Seahawks franchise.
The Seahawks were owned by Paul Allen, who passed away earlier this week from septic shock after battling a recurrence of cancer. Bezos, who may be the richest man in the world, is reportedly being prodded by several NFL owners, including influential Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.
Bezos already has ties to the NFL, as Amazon has an NFL partnership to stream Thursday Night Football. He is also based in Seattle, providing a hometown touch that the league craves in its ownership.
A purchase by Bezos would keep the team rooted in Seattle, something that Allen assured when he bought the team in 1996.
Allen’s sister, Jody Allen, is his main heir, but has not commented. It is believed she has little interest in running the Seahawks or the NBA’s Portland Trailblazers,...

The Atlantic said Monday that it has hired Jemele Hill as a staff writer, a landing spot for the outspoken former ESPN host who departed that network this past summer. In her new role, Hill will cover issues related to sports, race, politics and culture for the magazine and TheAtlantic.com. She will be based in Los Angeles as part of a new bureau and begins next week.
Hill exited ESPN after a 12-year career that included on-air with His and Hers opposite Michael Smith, as a SportsCenter host and a college football sideline reporter after starting her career as a newspaper reporter. A rare Friday tweetstorm from President Donald Trump took over today, as the Commander-in-Tweet gave a virtual state of the administration’s concerns to his online audience.
Naturally, the good economic news was front and center. There were also a few political endorsements, a denial on knowledge of Don Jr.’s famed Russian meeting, a shout-out to Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for his stance on the NFL’s ongoing national anthem policy, and, inevitably, the Mueller “witch hunt” and the machinations of the Democrats who support the investigation.
A sampling of the 14 tweets that have been posted so far as of 6 Pm Pacific:
The only things the Democrats do well is “Resist,” which is their campaign slogan, and “Obstruct.” Cryin’ Chuck Schumer has almost 400 great American people that are waiting “forever” to serve our Country! A total disgrace. Mitch M should not let them go home until all approved!

Donald Trump took time away from his busy schedule unearthing witch hunts and catching phantom spies to weigh in on another story he believe has national security implications. Talking to Fox & Friends’ Brian Kilmeade, The President of the United States discussed the NFL’s new policy of fining players who refuse to stand for the national anthem on the field. If they want to kneel, they have to do so in the locker room, the NFL has decreed.
“I don’t think people should be staying in locker rooms. But still, I think it’s good,” Trump beamed in the interview, taped previous afternoon while Trump attended an anti-immigration event in New York.
“You have to stand proudly for national anthem, or shouldn’t be playing, you shouldn’t be there,” Trump added. “Maybe you shouldn’t be in the country. You have to stand proudly for the national anthem.
