The new owners of The CW are reportedly looking to fill the network's schedule with inexpensive programming, and this series seems to fit the bill. Are the ratings good enough? Will The Great American Joke Off be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned.
A comedy panel series, The Great American Joke Off TV show is hosted by Dulcé Sloan. In each episode, two sets of three-person teams of comedians are tested on their skill in crafting joke setups, creating punchlines, and providing photo captions to performing solo spots, dropping risqué innuendos, and ranting about life’s petty irritations. Sloan decides which team has won each round based on who she thinks has been the funniest. Guests include Chanel Ali, Fahim Anwar, Alonzo Bodden, Matthew Broussard, Ed Gamble, Rhys James, Milton Jones, Moshe Kasher, Natasha Leggero, Joe List, Ismael Loutfi, Luke Mones, Glenn Moore, and...

It takes many people to fill Richard Osman’s shoes, and not just because he wears a size 14. Back in April 2021, the TV presenter, producer and novelist announced that he was leaving his co-presenter role on Pointless to focus on his hugely successful Thursday Murder Club book series and other projects. Due to the ‘stars we see in the night sky are actually hundreds of years in the past’ nature of TV broadcast, by that point, Osman was already four months out of the job. His final episode of the regular Pointless (he’ll still appear on the celebrity editions) was filmed in December 2021 and aired in July 2022, with this touching message to Alexander Armstrong.
When Pointless returned for Series 28 in September 2022, it came with a rotating clutch of new guest-hosts sitting behind Osman’s fact-checking desk. First up was Sally Lindsay, and following her were Stephen Mangan, Lauren Laverne,...

Remember Kinvig, Clone, Not With A Bang? These are the UK sci-fi sitcoms you’re unlikely to see on comedy best-of lists…
With E4 sci-fi comedy commissions, Tripped and Aliens, and in-development Channel 4 projects, Space Ark and Graham Linehan/Adam Buxton collaboration The Cloud, in the works, a new crop of sci-fi sitcom could be making its way to UK TV.
Making funny sci-fi on a small-screen budget is tough enough without the additional pressure of having to attract viewers more traditionally down-to-earth in their sitcom tastes. Sci-fi sets and effects can be seen as prohibitively expensive by comedy commissioners (which is perhaps why the best UK sci-fi sitcoms of recent years has been on BBC Radio), and the genre’s niche status doesn’t scream mainstream hit. Over the years, one or two stand-outs have managed to straddle the sci-fi and comedy TV worlds, but plenty more have stumbled in the attempt.

We asked Den Of Geek’s writers to recommend brilliant comedy shows that deserve to have more of a fuss made about them. Here they are...
Banging a drum about stuff we love is more or less our remit on Den Of Geek - hence what many readers have started referring to as the ‘inexplicably regular' appearance of Statham, squirrels and Harold Bishop from Neighbours on these pages.
To that end then, we asked our writers which comedy shows (past and present, UK or otherwise, on TV, radio, or online…) deserved more praise, and here are the ones they chose. You might already like them too, or you might discover something new to dig out and enjoy. That’s the fun of it.
Please note that this list isn’t ranked in any order, nor is it exhaustive. It’s compiled from the opinions of a group of different people,...

Milton Jones has announced he is working on a sitcom for the BBC.
Speaking in an online video interview, the comedian confirmed that he is in the early stages of developing a new show, reports British Comedy Guide.
He said: "We're working on something for the BBC at the moment. Hopefully we get there in the end, but it's a long slow process. I don't know what the title will be but it's me and my dad in a shop."
The series will revolve around Jones's dad wishing to retire and pass on the business to his awkward son.
Jones explained: "It's a pound shop and he [the father] wants to put me in charge of it but I'm incompetent basically, so he can't retire."
The untitled project is still in the early stages but the 50-year-old remains hopeful it will be commissioned.
He added: "We've done two scripts - we've got a reading - we'll see.

"I was on an American TV show a couple of years ago and tried to do the mean, snarky comedy that Americans really like," Adam Hills told Digital Spy when we ask him about his new DVD and "unofficial new religion" Happyism.
"I bombed really badly because it's not what I'm good at. It was awful, it was a really horrible death on American television because I just tried to be mean about celebrities.
"The two people that got me out of that were the Dalai Lama and Kermit the Frog. The story is how the Dalai Lama and Kermit the Frog helped me find my path again."
The only Hills stand-up we'd seen before were his bits on Mock the Week, a show recently slated by improvisation specialist Ross Noble.
"Ross's style would never suit Mock the Week, you know Ross!" Hills said when quizzed on the comments.

The Us comedian slams Two and a Half Men's Chuck Lorre for nabbing her gags, Jennifer Saunders slags off the BBC and Johnny Vegas interviews himself
This week's comedy news
It's a powderkeg issue in the world of comedy – and Roseanne Barr has gone off like a rocket this week, accusing Two and a Half Men creator Chuck Lorre of thieving jokes. On Friday, Barr used Twitter (what else?) to berate Lorre and the show's star, Ashton Kutcher, who cracked a gag on the show similar to one Barr performed in 2006. The joke is about old age and the menopause: "I'd imagine that you're wet in the places you used to be dry," said Kutcher's character, "and dry in the places you used to be wet." This prompted a volley of online abuse from Barr. "Comics," began one: "Begin Watching Chuck Lorre'S Shows 2 See If He Steals Your...

Chris Addison has laughed off rumours that he could be cast as the lead in Doctor Who, posing in a Tom Baker-esque scarf and hat costume.
The stand-up and TV comic will appear in the outfit in tomorrow night's (June 13) edition of Mock The Week, where he addresses the surprisingly short odds of him replacing Matt Smith as the Doctor.
Addison is one of the bookmakers' strongest tips for the role alongside the seemingly more likely selections of Ben Daniels and Rory Kinnear.

There has been a fair amount written lately, often by stand-up comedians themselves, about the current state of play for UK comedy. With artists such as Michael McIntyre, Lee Evans, Eddie Izzard, Jason Manford, Peter Kay and the like selling out tours using some of the biggest arenas in the country, clearly stand-up comedy is enjoying a significant purple patch. The current televisual ubiquity of panel comedy quiz shows and the platform they give to comedians only feeds into the tours and more and more comedians are now fronting their own TV shows, Sarah Millican included.
It perhaps goes without saying that reviewing a stand-up comedian’s show is very different from reviewing a film or television show – the usual beats of narrative arcs, characterisation, photography, acting and pacing fall by the wayside and instead we ponder one central question – is it funny?
Well, more so than with many artistic forms,...

Since the Christmas market represents probably 90% of sales for stand-up comedy DVDs in any year, there is inevitably a flood of new titles – usually based on the performer’s current or most recent tour – onto the market and it seems only fair to follow the trend set by last year’s Gift Guide and present a selection of the finest stand-up releases of the period.
So what makes a good comedian? Well chemistry is a big plus, and the ability to command both a sizeable stage and a mammoth audience (as these DVDs are usually filmed at the bigger venues), but it all comes down to material and personality. If you don’t have either, you probably shouldn’t be on the stage. Luckily there are those who do pass the grade.

Milton Jones: Lion Whisperer Live
Stars: Milton Jones | Produced by Geoff Posner, David Tyler | Directed by Geoff Posner
Christmas is upon us so you know what that means for the DVD market – shelves filled with fitness ans stand-up comedy DVDs. We’ve been sent a whopping amount to review this year, the first of which is only the second stand-up DVD from Milton Jones. Who he? The bloke with the crazy hair, colourful shirts and surreal jokes on Mock The Week. That’s who. He’s also an award-winning stand-up comic, winning the Perrier Award in 1996, Time Out Best Comedy Award in 2003, and he’s the current holder of the 2011 Chortle award for Best Headliner, not bad for a 15 year comedy career…
Shot at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London during Jones’ twice-extended 2010/2011 sell-out UK tour, Milton Jones: Lion Whisperer Live sees the comedian take his routine, consisting of punchy one-liners that,...

Christmas is almost upon us, so you know what that means – seasonal stand-up comedy DVDs! We’ve been inundated with press releases for DVD after DVD, so many in fact that its hard to keep track – from comedians such as Milton Jones, Peter Kay, Tim Minchin, Reginald D. Hunter and, as per the title, Chris Addison.
Now you may recognise Addison from his role as Ollie in the BBC 2 television BAFTA Award-winning satire The Thick of It and Toby in its spin-off film In the Loop, or from his appearances on my favourite panel show Mock The Week or even those annoying Direct Line ads; but besides his TV work Addison is also a prolific stand-up comedian and its his latest 66-show tour that forms the basis of his new stand-up DVD, Chris Addison Live, which is released in the UK on November 14th.
Thanks to the folks at Universal...

Doctor Who and Psychoville end, Mock The Week returns, and the marvellous Role Models is on the telly. Here's our UK TV week preview...
Saturday brings Doctor Who fans both great anticipation and a bit of reluctance for its arrival, as it means possible resolutions of some of our most fierce speculations about the show, at the same time as it leaves us for the entirety of the summer, returning in the autumn.
The mid-series finale, A Good Man Goes To War, airs at 6:40pm, Saturday, June 4th on BBC1. We've had video and images hinting at its contents, but nothing concrete has been revealed, leaving possibilities of Tardis interior proportions.
We'll have our review up as fast as fingers can make it happen, and we'll be anxious to read the comments of those, like us, who've followed this sixth series closely and are still mystified at what will happen Saturday.

Spooks, Qi, 8 out of 10 Cats, Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow and a re-run for Reaper. Plus lots of movies too in the week ahead...!
Where do MI5's secret agents hide out when they're not defending the Isles? Why, among comedians, that's where.
We start our weekend off in the style that only Mr Stephen Fry can deliver with a ninth series of Qi. The first of sixteen episodes welcomes Phill Jupitus, Jack Dee, Ross Noble and, of course, Alan Davies to the letter 'H' and the topic of Hodge Podge tonight, Friday, September 17th at 8:30pm on BBC1.
A little later in the evening, Jimmy Carr-hosted 8 Out Of 10 Cats returns to trump Qi with one series better (numerically, that is) in the first of five episodes at 10:00pm on Channel 4. Guests joining regulars Jason Manford and Sean Lock are Dr Christian Jessen, Jamelia, and the Jacks,...

Doctor Who At The Proms, a new fourth series of Mad Men, a return to Deadwood and Mock The Week, plus great movies for the weekend ahead...
We start the week with a musical treat and a temporary fix for our Doctor Who habits. On Monday, September 6th, at 8:30pm, BBC3 hosts Doctor Who At The Proms 2010 where a number of Who cast and characters will tap toes and sway eye stalks to Murray Gold's music. We'll have a special remembrance on the day from a fan who was in attendance at the filming of the programme. You'll find it in our TV section on Monday, with an additional reminder about the broadcast.
We heard good things about Deadwood, but missed the show when it first aired here. We reckon we'll rectify that gap in our TV western drama viewing and TCM aims to help, with daily airings...

Comedians Simon Evans and Ed Byrne have attacked Keith Chegwin on Twitter for stealing jokes. Chegwin responded to the accusations by claiming that most of the gags were either his or so old that they could not be credited to writers. When he became a trending topic on Twitter yesterday, he blamed the controversy on "the usual bunch of jealous comics". According to Chortle, Simon Evans was one of the first comedians to complain to Chegwin after he posted a Milton Jones one-liner on Twitter. The joke he tweeted was: "My auntie Marge has been ill for so long we changed her name to 'I can’t believe she's not better'." Evans said: "Cheggars old chap, you are no doubt acting out of good intentions but these jokes are written (more)...

Mock The Week guest panellist Milton Jones has admitted that he finds it hard to interrupt other comics on the programme. Since Frankie Boyle's departure last year, Jones has sat alongside regular Hugh Dennis and another guest. He told Pa: "As a guest, it feels really awkward to interrupt, because it just seems a bit rude really." He went on: "Also, when you first go on, you don't know your way around and when you have to stand up and sit down. They do say, 'Don't worry, you're there to do your own stand-uppy bits and (more)...

Stargate Universe's maiden season draws to a close, Mock The Week returns, there's lots of football and a fair few movies in our look ahead to the next week's telly...
Well, we hope you like football!
The telly landscape is looking rather barren this week, unless you count the various pitches. We're quite looking forward to the World Cup coverage, but it sure does make our show and film list on the short side...
