In the span of just 13 minutes, the Oscar-shortlisted short documentary Hysterical Girl unpacks a lot.
The film directed by Kate Novack not only elucidates one of Sigmund Freud’s most famous case histories—on a suicidal teenage girl the psychoanalyst called “Dora”—but how Freud’s writing about her continues to impact our culture more than a century later.
“We have one foot in 1900,” Novack tells Deadline, “and we have one foot in 2020.”
The documentary draws a link between the Dora case and more recent examples of the reaction to women who have accused powerful men—Brett Kavanaugh, Clarence Thomas, Bill Cosby, Harvey Weinstein and others—of sexual misconduct or assault.
Novack observes, “I think it then becomes really hard to argue, ‘Oh, no, that’s the case from the past, Freud isn’t relevant anymore, we’ve moved on.’”
As the film reveals, Dora had been sexually assaulted at age 13 by an adult male,...

Michael Uppendahl has stepped in as director and executive producer on American Crime Story: Impeachment, Ryan Murphy’s upcoming FX limited series about the Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky sex scandal. He replaces Richard Shepard, who recently exited the project.
Shepard signed on for the project in January, ahead of the coronavirus pandemic, which shut down all production and shifted all filming schedules, including Impeachment‘s. The show, a co-production of Touchstone Television, FX and Ryan Murphy Productions, was originally set to shoot in early spring. Delayed by the industry-wide shutdown, it is now slated to begin filming in early fall.
The pandemic and the scheduling bottleneck it has created, with shows slowly easing back into production with Covid safety protocols, has led to behind and in front of the camera changes on a number of projects. Another director previously booked for Impeachment also recently pulled out.

Annaleigh Ashford will star in the CBS multi-camera comedy pilot “B Positive.”
In the show, faced with finding a kidney donor, newly divorced dad Drew is at the end of his rope when he runs into Gina (Ashford), a rough-around-the edges woman from his past who volunteers her own. Together they form an unlikely bond and begin a journey that will change both of their lives.
Gina is further described as a working-class woman who is larger than life in every sense — most importantly, her heart. She lives in her mother’s basement, drives a senior citizen van for a living, and makes rash decisions, including giving Drew her kidney.
Ashford will film the “B Positive” pilot concurrently with the upcoming season of “American Crime Story” at FX, which will focus on the impeachment of President Bill Clinton. Ashford is set to play Paula Jones. She previously appeared in Season 2 of “Acs.

Annaleigh Ashford has been tapped as the female lead in B Positive, CBS’ multi-camera comedy pilot from the Mom team of Marco Pennette, Chuck Lorre and Warner Bros. TV.
Ashford’s casting involved a complex logistical puzzle and the will to make it happen of two top TV showrunners, Lorre and Ryan Murphy. She co-stars as Paula Jones in Murphy’s Impeachment: American Horror Story, which films concurrently with B Positive. To make her new gig possible, the pilot production start date was pushed, and her dates on FX’s Impeachment were adjusted. There wasn’t a lot of wiggle room as Tony Award winner Ashford is scheduled to segue into the London production of Sunday in the Park with George opposite Jake Gyllenhaal later in the spring.

After exploring the Oj Simpson trial and Gianni Versace's murder, Ryan Murphy's next season of American Crime Story will focus on the political sex scandal between President Bill Clinton and White House intern Monica Lewinsky. The infamous story has been in the works for a couple of years and will be produced by Lewinsky herself, a fact Murphy made clear back in 2018.
"I told her, 'Nobody should tell your story but you, and it's kind of gross if they do,'" he said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "'If you want to produce it with me, I would love that; but you should be the producer and you should make all the goddamn money.'"
Lewinsky will be played by Booksmart star Beanie Feldstein, with longtime Murphy actress Sarah Paulson as Linda Tripp. Annaleigh Ashford, who made her Acs debut in season two, will play Paula Jones. These...

FX chairman John Landgraf faced questions about the timing of the third season of “American Crime Story” which is slated to premiere in September, 2020 in the middle of the Presidential election cycle, and whether the series would impact on the election.
“The way we look at ‘American Crime Story’ is as revisionist history; we look at moments in times that involve crimes that can be looked at with much more nuance, much more complexity through writing and characters than could have at the time,” Landgraf began. “I feel completely unabashed about my pride for ‘American Crime Story’….there’s a lot of nuance in this story that people don’t know about yet.”
However, during his executive session at the network’s Television Critics Association summer press tour, Landgraf continued to face a barrage of questions and concerns about the timing of the series. Landgraf responded in bullish fashion, calling...

Unmissable and compelling this brave Maori sisterhood movie is a precious occasion to feel the force coming from a community that is often neglected, and not just in terms of cinematic visibility.
