Back when he first won the role, Flash Gordon was the vehicle that was supposed to propel Sam J. Jones to instant fame. As it turns out, it was the vehicle that propelled him to instant infamy, after the movie quickly fizzled out at the box office Still, the film has gone on to become a cult classic, and Jones has found that he’s won over a lot of fans with the film. Jones is still happy to talk about the role, as he did during a Q&a at a fan event, where he talked about why he believes he got the starring role in the movie. Masters of the Universe was one of three big-budget 1987 movies that sunk Cannon Pictures (the other two were Over the Top and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace). It was supposed to be their version of Star Wars, boasting a significant budget (for Cannon) and high production values. It was based on the toys and cartoon series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe by Mattel, but the film had a very rocky road to the big screen. While it’s now considered a camp classic, thanks mainly to the involvement of Dolph Lundgren, at the time, many thought that his performance helped tank the movie. He almost ended up being dubbed in the final cut.
Indeed, in the documentary Toy Masters (excerpted by THR), Mattel executives found Lundgren’s accent unintelligible, and director Gary Goddard wanted him dubbed. “We actually did bring in a few actors to loop test,...

Movie goers have always been fascinated with films that take place in outer space. Infuse that with some fun adventures, and you’re guaranteed a big hit. With Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 hitting big in theaters and bringing fans to tears since it’s their last adventure, now is the time to look for other space operas to fill that gap. What should you be watching?
Galaxy Quest (1999)
This film starts as a joke, making fun of the culture that can spring up around franchises like Star Trek. We see the cast attending a convention celebrating this long over TV series. Most of them seem like they want to be doing anything else, but we hear about the problems of them being typecast as their characters. At first, they think they are being courted for a new show but quickly find out that they are actually...

In making a documentary about a beloved actor like Robert Englund—most famous for playing Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare On Elm Street franchise— a major dilemma for the filmmakers has to be how to balance presenting the information people want with making a good movie.

Chaim Topol, who became professionally known solely by his last name in a career that included starring in “Fiddler on the Roof” on stage and screen and co-starring in the James Bond movie “For Your Eyes Only” and the sci-fi film “Flash Gordon,” died Thursday in Tel Aviv after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was 87 years old.
Topol’s death was confirmed by Israel’s president Isaac Herzog, who described him as a “gifted actor who conquered many stages in Israel and overseas, filled the cinema screens with his presence and especially entered deep into our hearts.”
Topol began his long association with the starring role of Tevye the milkman in the musical “Fiddler on the Roof” in 1967, appearing in the West End production, which ran for 2,030 performances. He starred in Norman Jewison’s 1971 film version, which carried a budget estimated at $9 million and garnered a domestic gross of $80 million.

The character of Flash Gordon has had a long and rich history in pop culture lasting almost 100 years. The first appearance of the space bound all-American hero was found in a science-fiction comic strip created in 1934 by illustrator Alex Raymond and writer Don Moore. Former Olympian and actor Buster Crabbe appeared as the character in the classic Universal serials that depicted Flash Gordon's clashes with Ming the Merciless on the planet Mongo. Fondly remembered for their air of wispy nostalgia, the "Flash Gordon" serials always ended on a cliffhanger. I remember one in particular where Flash is thrown down a dark hole with no chance of escape, only to be saved by the sudden deployment of a net in the first scene of the next episode.
That is to say, "Flash Gordon" was always a little ridiculous.
The Buster Crabbe serials have certainly left their mark on film history, but...

Mike Hodges, director of films like "Get Carter," "Croupier," and "Flash Gordon," has died in Dorset, England, at the age of 90, according to Variety. The site reports that Hodges' passing was announced by his friend Mike Kaplan, who worked on his film "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" as a producer. Hodges was known for crime dramas, with his last feature film released in 2003. He worked with Michael Caine in both "Get Carter," a British gangster drama, and 1972's "Pulp," about a pulp fiction author tasked with ghost-writing a celebrity's memoir, then solving that celebrity's murder.
Crime was a draw for Hodges, who said in an interview with Mulholland Books for his 2010 debut novel "Watching the Wheels Come Off," "Crime is the litmus that shows what's really going on below the surface. That's why I'm attracted to it. Besides, as one myself, sinners interest me more than saints." Writers also figured into another film from Hodges,...

Mike Hodges, who made his feature debut by writing and directing the seminal British gangster film Get Carter, starring Michael Caine, then replaced Nicolas Roeg to helm the cult sci-fi hit Flash Gordon, has died. He was 90.
Hodges died Saturday of heart failure at his home in Dorset, England, confirmed his friend Mike Kaplan, who produced Hodges’ 2003 film I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead.
The British filmmaker also wrote and directed Pulp (1972) in a quick follow-up with Caine; the bleak The Terminal Man (1974), an adaptation of a Michael Crichton novel that starred George Segal; Damien: Omen II (1978), though he was fired three weeks into the shoot and replaced by Don Taylor; and Black Rainbow (1989), starring Rosanna Arquette as a medium.

You'd be forgiven if you feel overwhelmed by the plethora of shared universes. Did you see the first "Doctor Strange"? If you're interested in "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," you'll need to watch two "Avengers" movies, "Spider-Man: No Way Home," and all of "WandaVision" to understand what's going on. The DC Universe is even more confusing. While there are some projects that take place within the same continuity, there are also standalone films like "The Batman" and "Joker" that aren't set in the primary universe. DC is adopting its version of the "multiverse" in the upcoming film "The Flash," which will feature the return of Michael Keaton's Batman from the Tim Burton films, as well as Ben Affleck's version from Zack Snyder's projects. That's going to confuse your average audience member who simply thought that Robert Pattinson was the new Batman.

Flash Gordon though is also a film that doesn’t just need that association, it instead stands on its own; and while it may not be Star Wars, it definitely has a place in the hearts of science fiction fans.

Flash Gordon still stands alone in the pantheon of comic book movies 40 years on. Colorful, vibrant, kinky, and often absurd, Mike Hodges’ gaudy tale of an all-American boy defeating a powerful villain from space and saving the Earth in the process had until recently felt far removed from the predominantly safe and CG-heavy comic book fare of the last few decades, despite its familiar themes and due in large part to its distinct refusal to take itself seriously. But the film we know and love is a world away from how it began.
Back in the 1970s, wealthy businessman and film producer Dino De Laurentiis held on to the Flash Gordon rights after George Lucas’ attempts to extricate them. A much-less-minted Lucas was forced to make his own space adventure movie instead, a little project called Star Wars. Its success indisputable, De Laurentiis was more determined than ever to make...

The Flash had a quite literal “Yass Queen!’ moment in its Season 6 premiere, when Cisco cued up the theme from 1980’s Flash Gordon to score Barry’s fleeting trip into the cosmos.
Flash Gordon, of course, starred Sam J. Jones (in the title role), Melody Anderson, Topol and Max von Sydow (as Emperor Ming the Merciless) in a gloriously cheesy space opera — or, as Flash showrunner Eric Wallace regards it, “The masterpiece from my childhood.”

The man who can do no wrong. Taika Waititi, has been commissioned to figure out a way to bring together an animated ‘Flash Gordon’ for Disney’s newly acquired 20th Century Fox.
The long in development property seems to have taken a new route as an animation under Disney’s ownership but at the moment, in what capacity Waititi could be taking this project forward is yet to be determined.
‘Flash Gordon’ is the hero of a space opera adventure comic strip created by and originally drawn by Alex Raymond. The strip was first published in 1934, it was inspired by and created to compete with, the already established ‘Buck Rogers’ adventure strip.

“Thor: Ragnarok” director Taika Waititi has signed onto “Flash Gordon,” as an animated feature film project from Disney-Fox. It is not known yet whether he will write, direct, or both. Deadline first broke the news.
Waititi is currently in post-production on his sure-to-be-controversial Adolf Hitler satire “Jojo Rabbit,” adapted from the novel by Christine Leunens. The story follows a Hitler youth who discovers his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their attic, prompting him to address his nationalistic ideals through his friendship with an imaginary Hitler, played by Waititi. Starring Thomasin McKenzie, Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell and Rebel Wilson, the Fox Searchlight dark comedy hits theaters on October 18.
Last fall, Deadline reported that Fox had hired “Overlord” director Julius Avery to write and direct a “Flash Gordon” movie, after having previously negotiated in 2015 with “Kingsman” director Matthew Vaughn. That was before the Disney-Fox merger, however, and the project now...

In “Shazam!,” Zachary Levi brings off something so winning it’s irresistible. He plays a square-jawed, rippling-muscled man of might, with a cheesy Day-Glo lighting bolt affixed to his chest, who projects an insanely wholesome and old-fashioned idea of what a superhero can be. But he’s also playing a breathless teenage kid on the inside, and the result of this body-morph balancing act is that the character, Shazam, is at once boyish and manly, wide-eyed and wizardly, ridiculously corny and heroically hip.
Levi, the 38-year-old actor best known for his roles on “Chuck” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” has always seemed a bit on the generically handsome side, but in “Shazam!,” wearing a 1950s-looking red-spandex body suit set off by a white cape with gold piping that looks like a restaurant tablecloth, he’s a walking piece of pop art, with eyes that (literally) pop, hair so absurdly dark...

"When I first saw Flash Gordon, it changed my life." Cleopatra Entertainment has released a trailer for the indie documentary Life After Flash, which premiered at a film festival last year and is opening later this month for those curious about it. Directed by Lisa Downs, Life After Flash looks at the roller coaster life of actor Sam J. Jones since his role as Flash Gordon, his struggles and successes, and the aftermath of when he went up against one of the most powerful producers in Hollywood. Flash Gordon was Jones' second role in a feature film and a big breakout for him, but he struggled to get any good work after it. The doc is half about Jones, and half about how Flash Gordon became an icon of the 80s. Looks a bit cheesy, for fans only. Here's the official trailer for Lisa Downs' documentary Life After Flash, direct...

That is right, the 80’s are heading to Scotland for Comic Con Scotland and into the heart of its capital city Edinburgh for Monopoly Events convention For The Love of 80s, and they are bringing some of the biggest if not the biggest talents of Film, TV and even some sports faces you will be able to lose your nostalgic mind to.
Here is the best part. Myself (Kevin – the talent) and my co-host Chris (the Scottish one) are making our way up to do some coverage of this awesome event. I mean, when we saw some of the names that were going to be only 40 minutes away from our sleepy little hermit town, it seemed rude of us not to attend this event. So if you are heading there keep an eye out for us, as we would love to chat to people who are fans of all things the 80’s had to offer.

Gordon's alive! The quest to get a new Flash Gordon movie off the ground and all the way to Mongo continues.
The Flash Gordon remake has had a troubled life cycle so far. Aside from the fact that we were criminally robbed of a sequel to Mike Hodges' brilliant 1980 Flash Gordon movie that starred Sam J. Jones, Melody Anderson, freakin' Max von Sydow, Topol, and the sickest Queen soundtrack ever for cryin' out loud. Seriously, how do you not make a sequel to that movie?
ahem. Anyway...
Julius Avery (of the upcoming good guys vs. Nazis/zombies flick Overlord which opens on Nov. 9) is in line to write and direct a Flash Gordon remake (via THR). Avery replaces Matthew Vaughn, who had been attached to it since 2015. Vaughn will now produce, alongside John Davis. Avery's script replaces one by Mark Protosevich, which in turn replaced one...

Casey Meadows (Deborah Foreman) is a young and free-spirited girl who although full of spunk and ambition – is trapped in a Californian restaurant cleaning dishes as well as trying to clean the crust off the idea of the American Dream. With seemingly no hope aside from sinking evermore deeper in to the scummy dishwater before her – Casey’s life may be on the up. One day at work, she receives a letter from a company named Brentwood Limousine Agency – the Rolls-Royce of Limousine Services – offering her a role as one of their drivers. Excited by the prospect of being part of such a prestigious organisation (and all that sick dough of course!), Casey takes no time in turning up for her first day of work.

"I made something. Something that can change everything, the whole world!" A teaser trailer has debuted for an indie sci-fi film titled Axcellerator, from director David Giancola who runs his own production company out of Vermont. Co-starring Ryan Wesen and Laura James, as well as Sean Young, Maxwell Caulfield, Sam J. Jones, John James, David Johnson, and John Romeo. A new Flash Gordon film has been in and out of development for several years. It's a movie I'd love to see happen, as I think it could be a huge sweeping sci-fi epic. The last thing we heard about the movie is that Kingsman: The Secret Service director Matthew Vaughn was in talks to direct, and it sounds like he's attached to the project.
According to AICN, 20th Century Fox has hired Thor screenwriter Mark Protosevich to write the script for Vaughn. They go on to say that "this will not be like any version of Flash Gordon we've seen on film before."
I'm a huge fan of Flash Gordon, and I'm completely excited for the prospect of what this movie could be. I would absolutely love it if captured the amazing tone and style of artist Alex Raymond, who is the creator of Flash Gordon.

40. Road to Perdition
One of the more surprising and lesser-known facts about Sam Mendes’ second film, Road to Perdition, is that it’s actually adapted from a graphic novel of the same name by Max Allan Collins. The plot follows Michael Sullivan (Tom Hanks), an Irish mob enforcer as he goes on the run with his son Michael Jr. after Jr. witnesses a murder and their family is killed in an effort to cover up any witnesses.
