As a former script supervisor, Silver Tree was in the unique position of being a “co-pilot” for many directors. This inspired her to take the leap and rebrand herself as a director, first with a feature film she also co-wrote (“Deep Dark Canyon”). For the better part of the last decade, though, Tree has worked on some of the most tonally unique series, from the dark and delicious “You” on Netflix, to the twisted humor of Showtime’s “Shameless” and the Globes and guilds-eligible traumedy “Dead To Me” (also Netflix).
Script supervision is such a specific, solitary job. What made you want to go into that line of work and how did you then transition into directing?
After college I had taken a gap year: I wanted to travel the world and I didn’t come from a family situation where they could send me around so I got a job as a flight attendant.

ABC Scraps ‘Thirtysomething’ Sequel Pilot, Vampire Drama ‘The Brides’ as Remaining Slate Takes Shape
ABC has made a range of decisions on its remaining pilots this season, which were all shutdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Firstly, the network is scrapping its pilots for the dramas “The Brides” and “Thirtysomething(else)” and the comedy “Valley Trash.” The news is surprising for “The Brides” — a female-led vampire soap opera with “Riverdale’s” Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa writing — and “Thirtysometing(else) — a sequel series to the classic dramedy “Thirtysomething” with the original creators and multiple original cast members returnin. Both shows were pegged as early frontrunners for series pickups prior to the pandemic. According to sources, both shows were on the pricier side to produce, which may have contributed to ABC cutting them loose.
Elsewhere on the slate, ABC will be picking up actor options with intent to shoot the following pilots once production can safely begin: drama “Rebel” starring Katey Sagal and based on the life of Erin Brockovich; “Harlem’s Kitchen,...

ABC is beginning to make decisions about its pilot slate as the network looks ahead to resuming production in the coming months.
Five pilots will begin shooting “once production can safely begin,” the network said Monday. ABC will extend actor options for the dramas “Rebel” and “Harlem’s Kitchen,” as well as the comedies “Bossy,” “Home Economics” and “Work Wife.”
TheWrap has also learned that three pilots are not moving forward, including “Riverdale” creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s sexy Dracula pilot “The Brides” and the “Thirtysomething” sequel series featuring the original cast. The Jason Lee-led comedy “Valley Trash” is also being scrapped.

ABC has handed a late pilot order to Kids Matter Now, a multi-camera comedy from Better with You creator Shana Goldberg-Meehan, CBS Television Studios and 20th Century Fox TV.
Written and executive produced by Goldberg-Meehan and to be directed by Christine Gernon (Speechless), Kids Matter Now centers on a diva boss with no patience for working parents who adopts a baby and has a change of heart, casting her mother-of-three assistant as an unlikely mentor and upending the office dynamics.
The pilot order for Kids Matter Now is for the regular pilot season despite coming after ABC recently gave a second-cycle pilot order to drama Triage.
ABC delayed pilot order confirmations for several comedies this season as it employed a different strategy. Four comedy scripts quietly received informal cast-contingent orders by the network early on. The other three — Home Economics, Untitled Emily Kapnek/Dean Holland (aka Wild Child) and Valley Trash...

ABC has made a late addition to its pilot slate with the pick up of a single-camera comedy from Emily Kapnek.
The untitled project is described as a love story with a twist centering on New York City teenager Lennon Cochrane, whose life is turned upside down when she stumbles on a family secret. Lennon is further described as creative, rebellious, and endlessly indulged by her mother. She rarely heard the word no growing up. Raised to believe she could do anything, Lennon never worried about fitting into any conventional box. She found music early and it became the primary outlet for her self-expression. When her city life is upended, she struggles to adjust to her new circumstances.
Kapnek will write and executive produce the pilot under her Specifica Productions banner, with Dean Holland attached to direct in addition to executive producing. Holland and Kapnek developed the story together. ABC Studios,...

ABC has given a pilot order to an untitled single-camera comedy written by Splitting Up Together creator/executive producer Emily Kapnek and to be directed by Splitting Up Together director/executive producer Dean Holland. Like ABC has done with several of its hot comedy scripts this year, including Home Economics, the network quietly gave the untitled Kapnek/Holland project (aka Wild Child) a cast-contingent pilot order a few weeks ago.
Deadline can reveal exclusively that Trinkets star Quintessa Swindell has been tapped as the lead in the pilot, lifting the contingency. ABC Studios, where Kapnek is under an overall deal, is the studio.
The Untitled Kapnek/Holland is described as a “love story with a twist” centering on New York City teenager Lennon Cochrane (Swindell), whose life is turned upside down when she stumbles on a family secret.
Swindell’s Lennon is creative, rebellious and endlessly indulged by her mother.

ABC has given back orders to Tuesday comedy series The Kids Are Alright and Splitting Up Together. With that, the network has picked up additional episodes of all of its fall series that did not have full-season orders.
ABC would not specify the size of the pickups for freshman Kids Are Alright and sophomore Splitting Up Together beyond calling them full-season orders. I hear Kids Are Alright has received a Back 9 order for a traditional 22-episode full season, while Splitting Up Together will produced five additional episodes for a 18-episode second season.

Heroes alumna Ali Larter is set for key recurring role opposite Jenna Fischer and Oliver Hudson on the second season of ABC comedy series Splitting Up Together, from Warner Bros. TV.
Splitting Up Together stars Fischer and Hudson as Lena and Martin, the couple whose marriage is reinvigorated by their divorce. They still live in the same house, alternating weeks, with one living upstairs and doing the parenting while the other lives downstairs in the guest apartment.
Larter will play no-nonsense Paige, who Martin finds attractive and Lena finds intimidating. Using her own “normal” divorce as a reference, Paige is unafraid to speak her mind, and she makes her feelings known about Lena and Martin’s unconventional arrangement.
Diane Farr, Lindsay Price, Bobby Lee, Olivia Keville, Van Crosby and Sander Thomas co-star in the comedy from A Very Good Production and Piece of Pie Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.

When one is immersed in television production, there is often little time to check out what stories other series are telling. But with no shortage of prestigious programming across broadcast, cable and streaming today, those who make television are carving out more time to watch for themselves. Rather than view these shows as competition, they want to celebrate the diverse content offerings.
To that end, Variety asked a number of series creators and showrunners what series that they would award with an Emmy this year. With the landscape vast and diverse, so too were the range of answers, encompassing everything from dark cat-and-mouse dramas (“Killing Eve”) to slightly surreal limited series (“The Terror”) to auteur comedies (“Atlanta”) and the end of a spy drama (“The Americans”).

Freshman comedy “Splitting Up Together” has been renewed for another season at ABC.

Dean Holland directed and executive produced the pilot. Ellen DeGeneres, Jeff Kleeman, Mette Heeno, Mie Andreasen, and Hella Joof also serve as executive producers. ABC has ordered a second season of its new midseason comedy Splitting Up Together starring Jenna Fischer and Oliver Hudson, from Warner Bros. TV. It is the only freshman ABC comedy to make it to Season 2, with The Mayor and Alex Inc. not expected to return. I hear the order is for 13 episodes.
Single-camera Splitting Up Together premiered March 27 to solid numbers — 2.1 Live+same day in 18-49 — and 7.2 million viewers — thanks in no small part to being the lead-out of the hugely rated debut of the revived Roseanne. Since then Splitting Up Together has settled in with about half those numbers. With help from the goosed up premiere, Splitting Up Together season-to-date average is a 2.1 18-49 in L+7/most recent ratings.

Splitting Up Together‘s Lena and Martin are harried, suburban parents of three. The pair is no longer in love and planning to divorce. But because they owe more on their mortgage than their home is worth, and because divvying up parental duties is hard enough without adding new locations into the mix, Martin and Lena have decided to continue living together — though pursuing separate lives — while co-parenting their children.

In the age of peak TV, we’ve gotten to see many series which are constructed to be satisfying after just one season of storytelling. With a writers strike averted, the broadcast TV business’ attention — which had been divided for the past month between pilot production and WGA negotiations — is focusing squarely on the ongoing pilot season, now in its final stage heading into the May 15-18 upfronts. Pilots are being screened this week, followed by pickup and scheduling decisions that will be made over the next 10 days. Here is the latest edition of Deadline’s Pilot Buzz on where I hear the various pilots stand:
ABC’s needs may have changed significantly since it ordered 23 pilots — the most of any broadcast network — in January and early February. In the past few weeks, the network went aggressively after American Idol and is in final negotiations for a reboot, which would take up a lot of real estate on the midseason schedule, and it also is negotiating for the upcoming revival of the classic ABC sitcom Roseanne.

The ABC sitcom "Manhattan Love Story" was the first fall show to get the axe back in October, followed quickly by "Selfie," but you can't keep a fair to middling romcom down.
Hulu is snagging the remaining seven unaired episodes of "Manhattan Love Story" to run every Thursday, kicking off on December 3. Last week, "Selfie" series creator/showrunner Emily Kapnek tweeted that Hulu would also be picking up the 21st century take on "My Fair Lady," to run on Tuesdays. Hulu will run one new episode every week.
Although "Manhattan Love Story" didn't win over many fans, "Selfie" had its admirers. Is it possible that Hulu or some other streaming service will snap this "Selfie"? Hey, it worked for "Community"! Sort of.

Hulu has become a digital rescue shelter for an abandoned TV series. The streaming video service will run the six unaired episodes of ABC’s recently-canceled Selfie. Selfie stars Karen Gillan and John Cho in a modern interpretation of My Fair Lady (based on the classic play Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw). The comedy series was created by writer Emily Kapnek, who’s previously written for shows like Parks & Recreation and Suburgatory. The first of the remaining Selfie episodes debuted on Hulu and Hulu Plus on Tuesday, November 25. The following five episodes will be released one at a time each week for the next five weeks. Hulu doesn’t plan to renew the series, unlike its competitors Netflix and Yahoo tend to do with the series they save. Netflix revived Fox’s hit comedy Arrested Developmentfor a fourth season, and Yahoo is starting production on the online-only sixth season of Community,...

It’s a mixed bag for ABC shows today. Selfie creator Emily Kapnek announced that the cancelled sitcom has found a new home on Hulu, where it will air out its remaining episodes before disappearing into the great unknown. Meanwhile, fellow freshman show Cristela has been picked up for a full 22-episode season.
Let’s deal with Selfie first. The comedy, which starred Karen Gillan and John Cho, got the ax at the beginning of the month after having aired six episodes. An additional seventh episode aired post-cancellation on November 11th, but now it’s been announced that the remaining six installments will all stream on Hulu, in the same kind of deal that was struck for cancelled Krysten Ritter-led sitcom Don’t Trust the B— in Apartment 23 last year. Each Tuesday, an episode will be released on Hulu, Hulu Plus and ABC.com for the next five weeks.

One of the biggest disappointments of this fall’s TV season for me was ABC’s decision to cancel Selfie right as the series was hitting its stride. The fantastic chemistry between series stars Karen Gillan (Doctor Who) and John Cho (Sleepy Hollow) was only getting better, as was the supporting cast of characters that surrounded them, led by a hilarious performance from David Harew00d (who I never would have known to be funny from his role in Homeland) as Sam Saperstein. Fortunately, for Selfie fans like myself, the show’s creator, Emily Kapnek (who was also behind ABC’s Suburgatory, which lasted three seasons on the network before getting cancelled), announced yesterday on Twitter that while we may have seen the last of Eliza (Gillan) and Henry (Cho) on TV, we can still see where their journey goes online, as the rest of Selfie‘s thirteen episodes (the...
