Starz will not be proceeding with a third season of 1970s-set series Minx.
The news is not surprising. Minx star Jake Johnson told Deadline last month that he did not expect a Season 3 renewal for the period erotic comedy, whose Season 2 finale aired Sept. 8.
Starz last January stepped in to rescue Minx, starring Ophelia Lovibond and Johnson, following the series’ cancellation by Max (then HBO Max) as part of cost-cutting tax write-offs while production was wrapping on Season 2. The premium network, which is in the process of cutting ties with owner Lionsgate, picked up both Season 1 and the unaired Season 2 of Minx, which is produced by Lionsgate Television. Both seasons will remain on the Starz app and all major platforms.

Bottom Dollar is closing shop.
Starz has opted to cancel Minx, the comedy about the first porn magazine for women, after a two-season run. The news comes after the series from creator Ellen Rapoport was originally developed for Warner Bros. Discovery streamer Max, which aired the first season and paid for a second before ultimately scrapping the show as a tax write-off with mere days remaining before production on the sophomore run was completed.
Minx was shopped by producers Lionsgate Television with the studio ultimately setting up the comedy starring Jake Johnson and Ophelia Lovibond at Starz, which is currently controlled by its parent company, Lionsgate. Max effectively paid to produce season two, with Lionsgate footing the bill to complete production and market season two. The second season premiered in July, in the thick of the writers and performers’ strikes making it challenging for cast members and producers to promote the show’s return.

“Minx” has been canceled at Starz, Variety has learned.
This now marks the second time the series has been canceled. The first season of the comedy originally aired on Max, where it was renewed for a second season before it was canceled in a cost-cutting move.
Starz then announced that they had acquired the second season of the show and would air it along with the first. Season 2 debuted on Starz on July 21. Both seasons remain available to stream on the Starz app and platforms.
The show received positive reviews from critics, holding an average critical approval rating of 93% over both seasons on Rotten Tomatoes. It failed to find a large audience, however, with the linear airings on Starz of Season 2 averaging less than 100,000 viewers per episode. There is no streaming viewership data publicly available for the series.

A third season of Starz’s period erotic comedy Minx isn’t likely in the cards, according to co-ep and star Jake Johnson.
In a recent Zoom chat with Deadline, the actor shared that he hasn’t heard anything about a final decision. “But by evidence of me cutting my hair short,” he said, “I don’t [expect a renewal].”
“I think the move to Starz, I think HBO kind of doing their HBO thing, or HBO Max, whatever it’s called now, I think that was brutal for [the show],” Johnson reflected. “Then, I think the strike coming out right as we were trying to promote it…My guess is you can’t beat something up that many times and keep going.”
Johnson called the hampering of the show’s success, simply as a result of the turbulent Hollywood moment in which it debuted, “unfortunate,” given his feeling that “there was a lot to that show.

“Minx” is about to get freaky with it.
Season 2 of the hit workplace comedy debuts on Starz after a network switcheroo from then-hbo Max. Critically acclaimed “Minx” was canceled by now-Max after wrapping production on Season 2 late last year, with Starz later acquiring the Lionsgate-produced series.
Ophelia Lovibond is back as Minx Magazine founder Joyce, along with her publisher Doug, played by Jake Johnson. “Minx,” set in 1970s LA, centers around Joyce, an earnest young feminist who joins forces with a low-rent publisher to create the first erotic magazine for women. The Minx crew is back and “better than ever” in the trailer for the show’s anticipated second season.
In the two-minute look at the series’ sophomore run, Ophelia Lovibond’s Joyce and Jake Johnson’s Doug have reunited despite a rocky falling out at the end of season one. Back together and with a new power dynamic, the success of their “51/49” ownership in the growing Minx brand is arguably more than they and the Bottom Dollar team can handle.
Rolling Stone coverage, suitcases of cash and the promise of “something so much more than a magazine,” abound amid the flashing bulbs of red carpets, cigar smoke and male exotic dance numbers. But with “global” success comes temptations, and Doug, Joyce and the Bottom Dollar crew will have to face them head on.

Minx is thriving under Joyce's (Ophelia Lovibond) leadership, and we can't wait to see what's on tap for everyone.
Starz went public with the trailer for Minx Season 2 on Wednesday, and it shows the magazine reaching dizzying heights.
There's even a perfectly timed bit of dialogue from Jake Johnson's Doug at the beginning:
"A lot of people counted us out. But we are back and better than ever!"
Many did count the show out after HBO Max canceled Minx after one season.
We have Starz to thank for picking up Minx Season 2 because this show is a true gem, and the story deserves to be told.
It's a rarity to have such a refreshing show on the air, and thankfully, we'll have fresh episodes when Minx Season 2 debuts Friday, July 21.
The trailer promises to up the ante both on the show and for the magazine.

Minx Creator Ellen Rapoport has reason to celebrate today — her show has a premiere date on its new Starz home — but she hasn’t forgotten that it’s also day eight of the WGA strike.
After Starz revealed that her comedy would bow July 21, Rapoport reminded folks via Twitter how she was able to successfully execute the second season of the show.
“This season was written in a 20 week room staffed by nine writers and zero robots,” she said on social media.
pic.twitter.com/Rkx86aJ2bH
— Ellen Rapoport (@ellenrapoport) May 9, 2023
Among other proposals, the WGA is fighting for minimum staffing for episodic TV writers rooms. For pre-greenlight rooms, it proposed “minimum staff of six writers, including four Writer-Producers.” For post-greenlight rooms, it proposed “one writer per episode up to six episodes, then one additional writer required for each two episodes after six, up to a maximum of 12 writers.

Five months after being rescued from cancellation by Starz, the 1970s adult film industry satire “Minx” has a premiere date for its second season. And it’s coming sooner than you think.
Season 2 of the comedy series starring Ophelia Lovibond and Jake Johnson will premiere 9 p.m. Et Friday, July 21, on Starz in the U.S. and Canada. But cord cutters will get a head start, as subscribers to Starz’s streaming site, app and on demand platforms will get access to the Season 2 premiere at midnight Friday.
Set in Los Angeles in the 1970s, “Minx” follows feminist intellectual Joyce Prigger (Ophelia Lovibond) after she joins forces with Doug Renetti (Jake Johnson), a low-rent smut publisher, to launch Minx, the first-ever erotic magazine aimed specifically at women. The second season will see Doug and Joyce grapple with their magazine’s success, and all the more money and problems that entails.

“Minx” is back in print. The canceled HBO Max series has been acquired by Starz, which will air its already completed Season 2 and host the first season on its streaming platform, the premium cable channel announced January 12.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to be joining the Starz family, and for the opportunity to introduce ‘Minx’ to a brand new audience. We’ve found the perfect home,” series creator and showrunner Ellen Rapoport said in a statement. “Our writers, cast and crew have created something truly special in Season 2, and I can’t wait for everyone to see it.”
In December, HBO Max abruptly canceled “Minx,” reversing its initial Season 2 pickup in May and taking Season 1 off the streamer. Sources from Lionsgate, which produces the series and owns Starz, told IndieWire that production on Season 2 was nearly completed before the decision was made but that they hoped to shop the series to other outlets.

Minx has found a new home on Starz after its surprising cancellation. The comedy series was in search of a network after HBO Max cancelled the series in mid-December despite announcing a Season 2 renewal in May of last year.
The series, set in 1970s Los Angeles, stars Ophelia Lovibond as Joyce, a young feminist who joins forces with a porn publisher named Doug (played by Jake Johnson) to create the first erotic magazine for women. The cast also includes Idara Victor, Jessica Lowe, Lennon Parham, Michael Angarano and Oscar Montoya. As previously announced, Elizabeth Perkins joined Season 2 as recurring character Constance.

Starz has rescued Minx, starring Ophelia Lovibond and Jake Johnson, following its HBO Max cancellation. The Lionsgate-owned premium network has stepped in to pick up both Season 1 and the unaired Season 2 of the period erotic comedy, produced by Lionsgate Television.
Season 1 premiered on HBO Max in March 2022 and was renewed for a second season two months later. The streamer reversed a Season 2 renewal in December while the comedy series was in its final week of production. The cancellation was part of a larger programming purge at Warner Media Discovery following the company’s merger last April as part of cost-cutting tax write-offs.
With Starz’s pickup of both seasons of the Lionsgate TV series, Season 1 will be part of the network’s library and Season 2 will be a Starz exclusive. According to sources, Starz pursued Minx when it became available and stepped up to pick it up.

Filming on the second season of “Minx” was a week from completion when HBO Max announced its unceremonious cancellation, along with fellow Lionsgate Television series “Love Life,” which is also being pulled from the streaming platform. Despite this, star Jake Johnson took to Instagram to share that the ’70s-set erotic dramedy will finish its production schedule and hopefully find a new platform elsewhere.
“We’ve been removed from HBOMax but we’re still finishing the season,” the “New Girl” alum said. “So thankfully they didn’t halt production. We’re about a week away from being finished shooting.”

HBO Max canceled Jake Johnson’s erotic magazine comedy “Minx,” but the actor assured fans that they will finish shooting Season 2 as the series looks for a new home.
“Minx,” also starring Ophelia Lovibond, Idara Victor, Jessica Lowe, Lennon Parham, Michael Angarano and Oscar Montoya, was renewed for a second season by HBO Max back in May, but the streamer scrapped the show this week in its latest cost-cutting move.
According to Johnson, Lionsgate Television “didn’t halt production” on Season 2 of “Minx,” which is “about a week away from being finished shooting.”
Johnson continued in an Instagram post, “From what I am hearing S1 & S2 (and hopefully S3) will find a new home, the question is where… I am eager to find a new platform for these episodes.”
The “New Girl” alum added: “We appreciate all the online support. We love making the show and hope to continue to.

“Minx” has gone out of print after all. HBO Max canceled its period comedy series after it was picked up for a second season last May.
Sources from Lionsgate, the production company behind the series, confirmed the cancellation to IndieWire. According to the sources, production on Season 2 recently wrapped before HBO Max opted to cancel the series, but Lionsgate TV hopes to shop the series to other outlets.
“We have enjoyed a good partnership with HBO Max and are working closely to find a new opportunity for ‘Minx,’ so current, and new viewers, can continue this journey with us,” Lionsgate said in a statement.
In addition to canceling the second season, HBO Max will also remove the first season, which premiered in March, from the platform. The nixing of “Minx” is the latest cancelation of previously greenlit projects at the streamer, including the DC movie “Batgirl” and several animated series.

HBO Max released the first trailer for upcoming comedy series “Minx,” starring Ophelia Lovibond and Jake Johnson.
Set in 1970s Los Angeles, “Minx” follows Joyce (Lovibond) — a young feminist activist looking to launch a women’s magazine. Future Man has traditionally followed gamer and pop culture nerd Josh on his romps through time accompanied by his soldier companions from the future, Tiger and Wolf, and season 3 is no exception. But if the latest trailer is any indication, this time it won’t be about preventing an apocalyptic future filled with Biotics as in season one or about attempts to scrape out a life in a future ruled by a megalomaniac as in season two. The name of the game in Future Man season 3 is survival and escape as all of time threatens to unravel.

Hulu has renewed “Future Man” for a third season, which will also be the show’s last.
The final season will consist of just eight episodes, while the first two were both 13. The series is led by “Hunger Games” star Josh Hutcherson as a janitor and world-ranked gamer who is tasked with preventing the extinction of humanity after mysterious visitors from the future proclaim him the key to defeating the imminent super-race invasion.
It also stars Eliza Coupe and Derek Wilson. It was created, written, and executive produced by Kyle Hunter and Ariel Shaffir and executive produced by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, Matt Tolmach, James Weaver and Ben Karlin.
This marks the second time in as many days that a Rogen-Goldberg show has set its final season. On Monday, it was announced that the AMC series “Preacher,” which Rogen and Goldberg developed for television along with Sam Catlin, would end after its upcoming fourth season.

Haley Joel Osment talks about how Future Man Season 2 will find Stu Camillo reaching great heights in a new future of his own design.
This interview is spoiler-free for Future Man season 2.
For some, the name Haley Joel Osment will always be associated with the “I see dead people” cultural touchstone of his childhood role in The Sixth Sense, but in recent years, the actor has taken on some fan favorite comedic roles including that of Stu Camillo in Hulu’s Future Man, which returns for its second season on January 11, 2019. Stu has had a range of personalities depending on the version of history in which he has appeared in the time travel series, but the insecure megalomaniac has always been portrayed as a humorous antagonist. Osment spoke about how his role has grown and what we can expect to see from him in Future Man season...

Just in time for Thanksgiving comes the Season 2 trailer for Future Man, the high-concept Hulu comedy from the creators of Sausage Party.
Written by Kyle Hunter and Ariel Shaffir and executive produced by Matt Tolmach, Future Man centers on Josh Futterman (Josh Hutcherson), a janitor by day and world-ranked gamer by night who is tasked with preventing the extinction of humans after mysterious visitors from the future proclaim him the key to defeating the imminent super-race invasion.
Here is the sophomore logline: Season 2 picks up in 2162, and Josh, Wolf (Derek Wilson) and Tiger (Eliza Coupe) learn that their Season 1 mission to stop the cure from getting out didn’t work. In this timeline, Stu Camillo (Haley Joel Osment) is now in power, having created the cure, and launched a plan to relocate humanity to Mars. A shadowy organization called the Pointed Circle seeks to recruit Josh to take Stu down...

Is it us, or does Netflix seem to be making a concerted bid to straight-up own November? It's launching a pair of expensive-looking period-set miniseries, a long-anticipated Marvel spin-off, a sophomore run for one of the best TV cult comedies of the past 10 years and their big-league awards contender film of the year. (Consider this a warning shot for 2018, during which Netflix will spend a projected $8 billion on new original content.) Meanwhile, Hulu's getting in the Marvel business as well as sending Josh Hutcherson back in time, while Amazon unveils...

The first official trailer for Future Man, starring Josh Hutcherson, is chock-full of classic science fiction references. Are you in or out?
Imagine a mash-up between The Last Starfighter, Back to the Future, and Terminator, and you’ll have a pretty good idea of the premise behind Hulu’s new time travel comedy, Future Man.

"It was devastating; she was a big part of the show,” Future Man executive producer/showrunner Ben Karlin told TV critics today at TCA about the death of Glenne Headly during production of the Hulu series’ first season. He added that dealing with her death did not require “that much rewriting” on the show because the parents’ storyline always was going to recede in later episodes of the season. Headly played the nurturing, ever-supportive mother of the series’ central…...

The executive producers and stars of Hulu’s upcoming comedy “Future Man” fondly remembered their late co-star Glenne Headly at the show’s panel at the Television Critics Association press tour on Thursday. “It was obviously devastating to us, she was a big part of the show,” showrunner Ben Karlin said. “This is a very close-knit cast. That was tough. It’s tough in any environment, but when you’re making a comedy, it throws a wrench into things.” “She was amazing to work with,” added star Josh Hutcherson, who plays Headly’s son on the show. He also pointed...

ABC is developing Read Bottom Up, a comedy project from ABC Studios-based producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage of Fake Empire and Ben Karlin. I hear the network took the project — based on the novel by Neel Shah and Sloane Crosley about love in the digital age — off the table with a put pilot commitment. Read Bottom Up — referring to the way one follows an email or text chain — follows young New Yorkers Madeline and Elliot, who meet then embark on a relationship…...

It’s already somewhat wrong to call Marvel’s slate of projects the McU if you’re taking “cinematic” to mean of the cinema. Daredevil, Agent Carter and Agents Of Shield are both linked entirely to the main movie timeline, so they’re legitimately part of that banner. And it would seem that Marvel intend to further boost their small screen presence.
The latest revelation states that ABC – who house both Agent Carter and Shield – are developing a show based on Damage Control.
It’s a particularly pertinent decision right now, since everything in the McU seems to be shaped by the idea of collateral damage, rather than normal people thanking superheroes for not allowing them to be killed horribly. Apparently, the tax bills and human cost of saving them is so great that they want regulation and accountability.
Because nothing says excitement like legislation and bureaucracy, as Prequel...
