Paranoia is a hell of a drug; feeding on your insecurities until you crumble in a mess of shattered nerves and broken reality. Such is the case with The Brotherhood of the Bell (1970), a tautly wound conspiracy thriller that plays like a top-tier satanic cult TV movie.
Originally broadcast as part of The CBS Thursday Night Movies, Bell was beat by NBC’s Ironside/The Dean Martin Show line-up, but for fans of first rate suspense, the Eye saw all that night.

Tumblr founder and Chief Exec David Karp is leaving the company at the end of the year, more than a decade after starting the trailblazing blogging platform and selling it to Yahoo for $1.1 billion in the meantime. Karp announced his decision in an email to employees, and later shared on his personal Tumblr page. The move was “overwhelming,” Karp said, but he was confident he was leaving the company in “better hands than my own.” Karp said he’ll be replaced by Jeff D’Onofrio, the company’s president and COO. “I beg you to understand that my decision comes after months of.

Lately, major companies have unleashed a wave of co-viewing apps, all of which are designed to give friends the tools they need to watch videos with one another remotely. First there was Houseparty, built by the team behind the broadcasting app Meerkat. That venture proved to be a success, and similar offerings from Google and Vevo followed earlier this year.
Now, it’s Tumblr’s turn. The Yahoo-owned (and now, by extension, Verizon-owned) blogging platform is behind Cabana, an app that adds another option for YouTube users who want to turn their viewership into a collaborative experience.
As a recent article from The Verge notes, Cabana was born within a Yahoo incubator and brought into Tumblr’s realm after impressing the blogging platform’s top dog, David Karp. When it was announced that Yahoo was purchasing the blogging site Tumblr for a price of $1.1 billion, users of the site were immediately afraid. While Tumblr is a business, it's also a place many consider their online home, and some of their houses are filthy.
While it's by no means the majority, there is a community of Tumblr users whose profiles focus on pornographic material. With a huge family-safe company like Yahoo entering the equation, it's natural to fear explicit content would be heavily monitored/moderated.
It sounds like that might not be the case, though. In a press release from Yahoo, the company "promises not to screw it up" and notes that Tumblr will continue to operate independently. That was echoed by Tumblr chief David Karp, who released a note of his own. "We're not turning purple," he writes, "Our headquarters isn't moving. Our team isn't changing. Our roadmap isn't changing.

Yahoo acquired micro-blogging service Tumblr this week for a reported $1.1 billion in cash and a promise “not to screw it up.” In good taste, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer announced the deal on Yahoo’s tumblr and included an appropriate animated gif to commemorate the occasion. Tumblr founder David Karp responded on the Tumblr Staff blog with reassurances that Tumblr will remain autonomous and not be painted purple. Meanwhile, in another not-so-distant area of the world wide web, another internet behemoth gave the burgeoning social media network a nice endorsement. YouTube started tumbling from YouTube.tumblr.com on May 15 in order to provide as much marketing support as possible for its inaugural Comedy Week (which is now recovering from a bumpy start). Tumblrers can check out the site for your expected array of images and animated gifs all related to the events that (as the tagline states) “better be funny.” If...

Yahoo has officially purchased Tumblr for $1.1 billion, following weeks of speculation. Which may seem like a lot of money, but when you break down the numbers, it's like 10 cents per Gif. Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer danced on a tightrope this morning as she tried to explain the logic behind her company’s $1.1B agreement to buy social network site Tumblr. She told analysts in a conference call that the companies will work together, but separately. They appeal to different audiences, but she says they can complement each other. And since Yahoo is “all about brands” and advertising, it can gin up sales on Tumblr even though it has a history of being ad averse — and tolerant of porn. “We need to have good tools for targeting” ad messages, Mayer says. While it’s important for Tumblr to be “true to their voice,” the companies can “monetize [it] in a way that’s tasteful” while showing advertisers “the benefits of [Tumblr's young] demographics and the huge volume of users and traffic.” Tumblr’s 26-year-old founder and CEO David Karp — who Mayer called “one of the...

There are more than 108 million blogs on the social network, and the acquisition is yet another bold move by Yahoo! Update, 1:27 Pm: Yahoo‘s spin machine will be hard at work today and tomorrow trying to persuade investors that CEO Marissa Mayer isn’t wildly overpaying for Tumblr. Although the social media service has become red hot — it averages about 75.8M posts a day — it generated just $12M in revenue last year and hopes for $100M this year, Forbes says. CEO David Karp began to sell ads for the site just a year ago. Yahoo has more than enough cash to make the deal. Still, Mayer could use Wall Street’s support for the biggest acquisition that she has made since taking charge in July. Her company’s shares have appreciated about 33% so far this year because Yahoo’s investments in Chinese e-commerce site Alibaba and Yahoo Japan have been doing so well. The 2011 Black List, the Top Unproduced Screenplays of the year has been released. The best unproduced screenplays from The Black List 2011 is compiled by votes from over 300 “execs, agency guys, and high-level assistants. Titled The Black List, the compendium highlights both established screenwriters and up-and-comers, and has served as a launching pad in the past for projects like Juno, Lars and the Real Girl, and (500) Days of Summer. Last year’s list included Margin Call, Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Hunger Games, and Snow White and the Huntsman.”
Regarding the validity of The Black List, things to keep in mind:
some of these screenplays have already been acquired and are already in development, though…none will have entered principal photography by December 31, 2011. Also worth pointing out is that, as in previous years, there have been rumors that some of the participants have been accused of using the Black List to promote their own clients or friends.

The Black List of 2011 continues with the second-half of the list showcasing the screenplays that received the most number of votes.
Remember, this is a list voted on by Hollywood professionals of what they personally believe to be the best unproduced screenplays written in 2011. You might recognize titles for movies that are in development. That's fine by The Black List rules; the only condition that the screenplay must meet is that it's not being filmed within this calendar year. For Black List 2011 selections like Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained, that makes it valid for Black List inclusion.
If you've missed the first half of the list you can find it here.

The 2011 Black List has arrived online and there are a bunch of the hottest scripts in Hollywood. Some have already been picked up by studios, while most are still unproduced. Here is the press release: The Black List was compiled from the suggestions of over 300 film executives, each of whom contributed the names of up to ten of their favorite scripts that were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2011 and will not have begun principal photography during this calendar year.
This year, scripts had to receive at least six mentions to be included on the The Black List.
All reasonable effort has been made to confirm the information contained herein. The Black List apologizes for all misspellings, misattributions, incorrect representation identification, and questionable 2011 affiliations.
It has been said many times, but it's worth repeating:
The Black List is not a "best of" list. It is, at best, a "most liked" list.

[1] Each December since 2004, studio executive Franklin Leonard has compiled the best unproduced screenplays of the year, as voted by hundreds of execs, agency guys, and high-level assistants. Titled The Black List, the compendium highlights both established screenwriters and up-and-comers, and has served as a launching pad in the past for projects like Juno, Lars and the Real Girl, and (500) Days of Summer. Last year's list included Margin Call, Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Hunger Games, and Snow White and the Huntsman. This year, like every other year, is compiled from the suggestions of hundreds of film executives, each contributes the names of up to ten of their favorite scripts that were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2011 and will not be released in theaters during this calendar year. Some of the best scripts have come from The Black List. Films like The Social Network went on to become the best of 2010. Other movie scripts have catapulted writers into stardom. Diablo Cody’s Juno, Nancy Oliver’s Lars And The Real Girl, Scott Neustader’s and Michael Weber’s 500 Days Of Summer, are just some of the screenplays which appeared on The Black List and then were made.

According to numbers dug up by Mashable, microblogging newcomer Tumblr has just surpassed the 20.7 million blogs hosted by WordPress--explosive growth since it only hosted around 7 million blogs as recently as January. Exponential growth like this means it's probably just the beginning of many record-breaking events.
WordPress, like peer Drupal, has the air of a "professional" blog-hosting site, compared with other offerings like Blogger, because it has extensive controls and complexity, it takes a little getting used to, and is used by a wide range of professional companies to host their sites. Tumblr is much simpler, with more limited range for customization and complexity, and only recently included the ability to add comments. With its emphasis on short, pithy posts, and habitual use as a photo-publishing and social-sharing site, Tumblr posts are more closely related to Twitter feeds than professional, hefty, WordPress sites.

Though it started as a very insider thing, The Black List has recently become more popular and mainstream. For those who may not know, it's an annual list of the year's best unproduced screenplays as voted on by about 300 Hollywood development executives and high-level assistants. We recently posted the 2010 list [1] and looking back at some previous years (2007 [2], 2008 [3], 2009 [4]), films such as Recount, The Beaver and The Social Network all sat near the top of the list. Skim over any of them and you'll see names of films that are out, are coming out and more. It's a big deal. This year, a new Black List of sorts has come out. Dubbed Viewfinder, it's supposed to do for directors what The Black List did for screenwriters. Viewfinder is a compilation of "the top commercials, shorts and/or music videos of 2010." Several of the directors on the list already have deals or are in production on films.

With the publication of the 2010 Black List another compilation of the year's best unproduced screenplays has arrived. This is the fifth year that The Black List has been in existence, and its purpose is to shine a spotlight on what 290 film executives think are some of the best creative executions of ideas worthy for the big screen.
To be nominated and included on The Black List a screenplay can't have been released in 2010. As well, the minimum number of votes that a screenplay needed to have to warrant inclusion on the list is five. Several of the projects listed on Tbl are in development and will be released in the next twelve months. Others might have heat but take years to reach theaters, and there are also many that will never be greenlighted.

The Black List started in 2005 when Franklin Leonard was working for Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way production company. Leonard was getting drowned in sub-par spec scripts, so he sent an e-mail out to his industry contacts looking for the best unproduced scripts out there. The 2005 Black List and the 2006 Black List were undeniably important in getting a fresh batch of writers on the Hollywood scene. Since then, too many people know about the party and the studio system has learned that people are paying attention. That means that increasingly, scripts have been lobbied into the Black List. [Note: I have no actual evidence I would be able to share, disclose or show you that proves this, so file that assertion under: "Things Dave thinks and gets to write because he's squatted on that soapbox long enough to get squatter's rights."]This year: the majority of the Black List Top Ten has already been sold or optioned. I'm not sure how helpful it is to make a list of good In Production scripts. Certainly less helpful to writer's churning out material that keeps getting passed over (or people who have Not starred in Prison Break...

Back in 2004, a list was compiled of the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood of that year. This came to be known as The Black List. It was all started by a young executive at Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company Appian Way, who polled 90+ peers to send him their 10 favorite, new, unproduced screenplays to read over the holidays. It has since become a tradition at the end of every year, in December, to release this list, which is voted on by a group of individuals in the entertainment industry from producer assistants, talent agency individuals, and many people involved with film development all the way up to VP's.
The 2010 Black List is here, and thanks to Deadline we have the list of best unproduced screenplays. Most of the scripts we've heard of, many of them are in production, some have already wrapped filming, they just wont be released until next year.

The Black List has been released. The annual list is compiled with a poll of 300 (up from last year's 250) development executives and high-level assistants, and contains a ranking of the hot screenplays making the rounds in Hollywoodland, which were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2010 and will not be released in theaters during this calendar year. Basically, the black list contains the hottest projects in Hollywood that you haven't heard of yet. Note: The headline is a slightly inaccurate, because a lot of these screenplays have already been acquired (six of the top ten listed), a bunch are in production now, and some have even finished production. One of this year's top ten screenplays, J.C. Chandor's Margin Call, about the last 24 hours at now-defunct investment bank Lehman Brothers is already in the can and set to premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival with Chandor at the helm...

Frank Leonard is the most popular man in Hollywood today. This fine December day marks the release of the 6th annual Black List, a ranked collection of the top un-produced screenplays in the town, compiled by Leonard. Last year the top script was The Muppet Man from Christopher Weekes about “the life and times of the late Jim Henson.” Coming in second was Aaron Sorkin‘s The Social Network script, which is a current frontrunner to sweep the Oscars. The year before was The Beaver, now starring Mel Gibson and set for a release in 2011.
The top one this year, College Republicans, has Shia Labeouf and Paul Dano attached. As for the rest of the list, I’ll be seeing Margin Call (pictured above) at Sundance 2011 and Safe House goes into production next year. We also reported on Oldboy director Park Chan-wook‘s English language debut with Carey Mulligan attached,...

Tumblr has fallen -- and hasn't been able to get up! The popular social microblogging platform utilized by many prominent media companies (like Newsweek and NPR) and people (like John Mayer) went down late Sunday night, and as of 8:30 a.m. Et remains that way. Visitors to Tumblr sites were greeted with this message: "We're working quickly to recover from a major issue in one of our database clusters. We're incredibly sorry for the inconvenience." It’s the first major outage for the upstart service, which launched in 2007. (The company, founded by David Karp,...

"Before, if somebody offered to invest in your company, you just jumped at the chance," says Harjeet Taggar of Y Combinator. "It meant your idea is not going to die. But for the first time, people are starting to grill investors on why they should take the capital, if they can get the capital elsewhere."
Taggar is a venture partner at Y Combinator, a Vc that makes small investments in startups (rarely more than $20,000) in exchange for small stakes in the companies (around 2% to 10%). Rather than seduce startups with offers of millions in seed money, Y Combinator is part of a growing trend of investors that offer what Taggar describes as a mix of mentorship, networking, leverage, and brand value.
"You're starting to see a trend of investors having to work harder to convince founders that they should be able to invest in that company," he explains. "There is very...

Exclusive: Here's a movie spoof you have to watch, even though Wme would prefer you didn't. The agency often puts together presentations for its quarterly meetings. The lit department made this short film, and debuted it this morning. They hoped it would not go beyond agency headquarters, but Deadline got it and felt obliged to share. The short was directed by Dave Green, and the Ari-esque agency head is played by Miles Fisher. The Wme agents who took part include Dave Wirtschafter, Rob Carlson, Kim Bilek, Simon Faber, Jason Spitz, David Karp and David Lubliner. Plus a Rob Cohen cameo.

Tumblr is the Twitter of the micro-blogging world: It's stunningly simple, growing rapidly in popularity, and has had obscure plans to earn revenues. Until now, that is. They've unveiled a novel business model.
Tumblr has just completed round C cash-raising activities, as AllThingsD noted, and scored $5 million from investors Spark and Union Square (also the sole investors in its previous investment round) which brings its cash-raising efforts to a grand total of $10.2 million. Though that sounds like a lot of money to be getting on with, especially for a company for whom it would seem computing infrastructure needs were light to moderate at worst, the company has been spending more and more on servers to support its clients (who don't pay to run blogs on Tumblr) and their page visitors. Who now create an incredible one billion page views per month. Yes, Tumblr is that popular.
So how does Tumblr...

2009 list and top five has already delivered better results than the 2007 list. Mark Romanek and Antoine Fuqua are respectively attached to The Voices (#3) and Prisoners (#4), while David Fincher is currently helming The Social Network (#2) and Miguel Arteta is on production with Cedar Rapids (#5) are currently in production. There are tons of comments to make on the list but something worth a mention is that Sarah Polley is one of three actors (Zach Braff and Rashida Jones) who have their screenplays on the list. - You know you're having a really great Friday is your name is Christopher Weekes. Weekes who wrote and directed 2008's Bitter &Twisted (a Tribeca Film Festival selection) is on top of this year's Black List -- his The Muppet Man, a biopic on Jim Henson, leads a field that includes several project currently in production. Franklin Leonard's extremely popular concoction is as he reminds us...

If you're a nerd, you have spent the last year explaining to your friends the virtue (or downfall) of Twitter and Facebook. In another year, you'll have a third prong to your presentation: Tumblr.
Tumblr is a little bit the long lost cousin of its other buzzword counterparts. Like Twitter, it takes the now-antiquated medium of the blog and refreshes it with a new format, a centralized platform, and more interactivity. Like Facebook, it's yet another face on your online personality, a scrap book of the Web-you. In one sentence, Tumblr is a blogging platform that makes it easier to post video, audio, words, social bookmarks, photos, and even other people's blog posts into your blog, and share it with other people. Instead of having to upload things to YouTube, Delicious or Flickr, or create your own WordPress database before posting things, you can put your media directly into Tumblr...
