He was a famous Ottawa-based portrait photographer perhaps best-known
for his photo of a glowering Winston Churchill, which was created by snatching
Sir Winston's cigar away suddenly without warning.
His photographs are included in permanent collections ranging from the
Museum of Modern Art in New York to the National Portrait Gallery in
London. He was catapulted to international fame with his 1941 portrait
of Winston Churchill, taken as Great Britain stood alone against Nazi
Germany.
He was awarded the O.C. (Officer of the Order of Canada) on December
22, 1967 and the C.C. (Companion of the Order of Canada) on April 20,
1990 for his services to photography.
