In Fritz Kiersch's bonkers 1984 horror film "Children of the Corn," the small town of Gatlin, Nebraska is taken over by a gaggle of murderous children. Gatlin's kids have killed the town's grown-ups at the behest of an off-screen deity named He Who Walks Behind the Rows, some kind of harvest-related being that demands death and blood. The kiddie cult is headed by Isaac (John Franklin), a soft-spoken Quaker type who quietly decrees violent action from his flock. Isaac would eventually be betrayed by his gruff lieutenant Malachi (Courtney Gaines) who ties Isaac to a cross. Franklin would reprise his role in 1999 for "Children of the Corn 666: Isaac's Return.
Franklin has had a respectable acting career since his Corny debut, having played multiple voice roles in the '80s, as well as Cousin Itt in 1991's "The Addams Family." Franklin also showed up in the notorious cult film "Tammy and the T-Rex...

Back in 1989 a horror anthology series hit HBO network and took the horror world by storm. Maybe you heard of it? Doesn’t ring a bell? Its intro is made of nightmare fuel as the camera treks through its main gate, which ascends to a broken-down, deteriorated mansion as lightning cackles through the night sky. We enter this amusement park of horrors, cobwebs draped alongside the walls, creeks and strange noises echoing about, eerie atmosphere soaking up the screen, and we enter a false trap door. Now when I was younger, I think I was close to shitting my pants because here or there as we descend down these stairs into this abyss, and we go through a room here and there. And then right then and there,...

Created by Ton Ruegger and overseen by executive producer Steven Spielberg, "Tiny Toon Adventures" debuted in September of 1990, marking a sea change in mainstream TV animation. "Tiny Toons," tapping into 1990s trends toward self-awareness, regularly addressed its own status as a cartoon show, and the characters would frequently give side-eyes to the audience, extract scripts on camera, or even exit their animation cels to cause havoc for the animators. The show's regular obliteration of the fourth wall reflected — and guided — the prevailing winking sarcasm of the 1990s, making it (and I am not exaggerating) a vital and definitive text of the decade. It's no coincidence that it landed the same year as Richard Linklater's "Slacker."
"Tiny Toons" was striking, funny, and launched an entire series of notable Spielberg-backed 1990s cartoons like "Animaniacs," "Histeria!," and "Freakazoid!"
The characters on "Tiny Toons" were largely all distaff "youth" counterparts of established Looney Tunes characters.

Horror for Christmas? Yes, I’m here to holly your jolly, deck your halls, and sacrifice your children to Krampus. What a merry holiday season indeed! Since our October vid focused on Halloween Specials, I figured the Spooky Christmas crossovers deserved some attention as well.
As a kid, my family did have Christmas watching traditions like most. We did Scrooged, A Christmas Story, Frosty, Charlie Brown, Garfield, Home Alone, Gremlins (Ahhhh it’s controversial), Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands…and my mom may have snuck in Black Christmas. She was and is a fan of Holiday-based Horror. Her favorite being My Bloody Valentine. All of this is totally normal. So, as you can probably guess, the tradition has continued.

After taking a look back at House II: The Second Story (a favorite of mine since childhood) and House of 1000 Corpses (which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year), JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek continues his The Best Scene video series by digging into what he feels is the best scene from the 1995 classic Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight (watch it Here). Lance’s choice for the best scene in this one is the scene where Billy Zane’s character The Collector gives up his cowboy disguise and reveals his true nature. You can hear all about it in the video embedded above!
Directed by Ernest Dickerson from a screenplay written by Mark Bishop, Ethan Reiff, and Cyrus Voris, Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight has the following synopsis: Ex-soldier Frank Brayker is the guardian of an ancient key that can unlock tremendous evil; the sinister but charming...

During his panel at last weekend’s Terror Con in Marlborough, Ma, John Kassir — the Crypt Keeper himself — shared his perspective on Tales from the Crypt‘s complicated rights issues that halted TNT and M. Night Shyamalan’s reboot attempt in 2016 and continue to prohibit new iterations of the beloved horror anthology series.
“Obviously, Tales from the Crypt was a comic book, and those rights were granted to the producers of the show back in the late ’80s,” he explained. “So then they started producing the show, and it was very big producers. We’re talking about Joel Silver, who did all the Lethal Weapons, the Die Hard movies, the Matrix movies. He’s a very big producer, and he also has a reputation of being one of the biggest assholes in the business. You didn’t hear me say that, but you did!” The audience laughed.

It’s not even October, but Massachusetts is already being spoiled with horror events. A mere week after Silver Scream Con took place in Danvers, Terror Con slashed into the Royal Plaza Trade Center in Marlborough on September 15-17.
Freddy Krueger himself, Robert Englund, had the longest lines throughout the weekend. He was joined by several other A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise alumni: Part 1’s Heather Langenkamp, Amanda Wyss, and Ronee Blakeley; Part 2’s Mark Patton and Kim Myers; Part 4’s Lisa Wilcox and Nicholas Mele; Part 5’s Erika Anderson, Whit Hertford, and Beatrice Boepple; and Freddy vs. Jason‘s Monica Keena.
Other big draws included Lance Henriksen (Aliens), Edward Furlong (Terminator 2), pro wrestling legend Mick Foley, The Walking Dead‘s Seth Gilliam, Ross Marquand, Chandler Riggs, Emily Kinney, and Katelyn Nacon, Danielle Harris (Halloween), Sherilyn Fenn (Twin Peaks), John Kassir (Tales from the Crypt), and a Fright Night reunion with Chris Sarandon,...

John Kassir returns as the infamous Cryptkeeper, who dispenses puns and helps save Halloween, as Solar Opposites pays tribute to this horror icon.
A lot of horror anthology series have made their mark on the medium, but one of the reasons that HBO’s Tales From the Crypt remains such a perennial favorite is because of its haunting, hilarious master of scare-emonies, the Cryptkeeper. The stories told within Tales From the Crypt typically don’t disappoint, but the hacky host that introduces and bids farewell to each installment quickly became the most celebrated aspect of the series. The Cryptkeeper character didn’t make his debut in HBO’s anthology series, but the reason that this take on the fearsome figure broke through to the mainstream is because of John Kassir’s titillating performance in the role. Now, after nearly a decade of staying in his grave, John Kassir makes his proper return as the Cryptkeeper,...

Real-world journalism comes with some occupational hazards, but usually death isn’t one of them. In the horror genre, on the other hand, members of the press find themselves in danger every time they get a hot lead on something weird and unexplained. Their tenacity never does them any good; one minute they’ve found the story of their career, the next they’re never heard from again.
Journalists often get in over their heads in horror. Something goes wrong in their investigation, and they end up becoming the story. As these five TV-anthology tales illustrate, digging for the truth can also mean digging your own grave.

Set in the 1980s, somewhere around Christmas, Hellblazers is yet another original offering from Tubi, at least in some territories. Writer/director Justin Lee isn’t exactly somebody I expect a good film from, but even he can’t go wrong with a cast that includes Tony Todd, Billy Zane, Bruce Dern, Adrienne Barbeau and a few other genre vets, can he?
Wheelchair-bound Nam vet Bill Unger (Dern) is out visiting his wife’s grave when he hears something in the woods. He rolls over to the edge of the trees just in time to see Joshua (Zane) and his followers toss someone in a flaming pit, and a demon climbs out. As he aptly puts it, “We’ve got a big problem”.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday.
This week’s question: What’s your favorite anthology series of all time? Why?
Marisa Roffman (@marisaroffman), Give Me My Remote
I have to go with the original “Twilight Zone,” because it is astonishing what the show was able to do. One of the beautiful things about television is following characters on an extended journey, but most of the best episodes of “Twilight” were wrapped up in under 30 minutes. That’s a plot/character/world introduction, story, and a twist/resolution in about half the length of a 2019 premium drama episode.
It also remains the only show I’m content to watch out of order (a normal no-no for me), and the only series I try to not seek out via streaming services. I tend to get sucked into the holiday Syfy marathons,...

One of the most exciting genre celebrations in recent years, the Salem Horror Fest celebrated another successful gathering of horror lovers last year, and Daily Dead was thrilled to be a media sponsor of the 10-day event. Following the announcement in July that Cassandra Peterson will return to the festival as Elvira, horror fans now have another big reason to mark their calendars, as the Shock Waves podcast team will join the voice of the Crypt Keeper himself, John Kassir, for a 30th anniversary tribute to HBO's Tales from the Crypt TV series.
Taking place at Salem Horror Fest on Friday, October 11th from 7:00pm–1:00am at the Salem Waterfront Hotel, the Tales from the Crypt 30th anniversary tribute will feature the Shock Waves podcast team and Kassir discussing their favorite episodes of the beloved horror anthology series that aired on HBO from 1989–1996. The title of Star Wars: Episode IX may be referring to Darth Vader.

All options seem possible, but a new Episode IX theory reminds us that we’re forgetting one extremely important Skywalker: Anakin."

You heard his cackle as the Crypt Keeper on HBO's Tales from the Crypt series, and for his new project, Mystic Cosmic Patrol, actor John Kassir voices Martini-Bot, a robot who is supposed to help a Power Rangers-type team defend the galaxy, but has instead been re-programed to make great cocktails and say snappy Rat Pack-esque comments. With Mystic Cosmic Patrol premiering August 24th on Funny or Die, Daily Dead had the great pleasure of talking with Kassir about the new kaiju comedy web series, and he also discussed his hopes to reprise his iconic role as the Crypt Keeper on a potential new Tales from the Crypt series.

The word you’re looking for is “sincerity.” It’ll be on the tip of your tongue from the opening shots of “Pete’s Dragon,” a warm, wistful, and wholly wonderful remake of a 1977 Disney musical that today’s kids have never heard of and yesterday’s kids have long since forgotten. That word, baked into every aspect of this rewarding live-action fable, will be staring you in the face as the film’s powerful prologue careens from adventure to tragedy and back again. It may have been ushered into production on the dying fumes of brand recognition, but — from that exhaust — director David Lowery has crafted something that feels like it comes from the heart. There are remakes, and then there are remakes, and “sincerity,” above all else, is what most definitely makes this one of the latter.

The idea is to eat a ridiculous amount of cake and talk about what makes my favourite TV show so brilliant. What links Ninja Turtles and cake? Nothing. Why does everything always have to make sense? Even looking for pictures that I can use in these articles highlights that no one ever eats cake on the show. What I do is buy Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cake and just get on with it, and you can either go with me or call me out on doing something so weird. But then what are we gonna do with all this cake?

“Hello, Boils and Ghouls” was a typical opening salvo from The Crypt Keeper, the wraparound host (and animatronic cadaver) of HBO’s inventive, creepy and more often than not, mordantly funny salute to the EC Comics of yesteryear, Tales from the Crypt (1989 – 1996). Throughout seven seasons, viewers were subjected to as much gore, nudity, and twisted morality as we could handle. God (or his underworld counterpart) bless premium cable.
Tales ran from June 10th, 1989 to July 19th, 1996, for a grand total of 93 episodes. That’s a lot of grue to ingest, and until ratings started to slip by Season Six, horror fans found it easy to lap up. And as with any anthology series, mileage varies and quality flickers to and fro – but Tales from the Crypt’s success is anchored in the very fact that it was allowed to live, and thrive, for as long as it did.

Users of the online publishing platform Wattpad could actually help shape the next iteration of the Tales from the Crypt franchise in a deal unveiled via The Hollywood Reporter on Monday. In a new pact with Turner, TNT and its sister network TBS will source content from the service for its upcoming series, and Crypt -- which is slated to premiere on TNT next year -- will serve as a test case for the idea. According to THR, Wattpad's two million-strong stable of writers will be invited to submit story ideas for the show via "contests and other venues" that could potentially be optioned by the network for future storylines. "We're especially excited to kick off our collaboration with a focus on TNT's Tales from the Crypt horror block, which will tap into Wattpad's strength in the horror genre," said TBS and TNT senior vice president, digital ventures Justin Williams in a statement. Executive-produced by M. Night Shyamalan, the new Tales from the Crypt will feature an all-new iteration of the Crypt Keeper that was originally voiced by John Kassir. The reboot series will anchor a new two-hour horror block on TNT.

If there's one element Tales from the Crypt fans are attached to from the original HBO series, it's John Kassir's cackling, pun-happy Crypt Keeper. Which is why I suspect many fans will be disappointed by today's news that TNT is "reinventing" the character for their M. Night Shyamalan-produced reboot, which the network has now officially ordered for a 10-episode run. In short: HBO's incarnation of the Crypt Keeper -- and by extension Kassir -- will not be returning for the new series. As Kassir pointed out to me back in January, the character is in fact owned by the original series' producers -- a group that includes Joel Silver, Robert Zemeckis, Walter Hill, Richard Donner and David Giler -- and the decision of whether or not to grant the rights is up to them. The question is: were TNT and Shyamalan simply unable/unwilling to retain the rights,...

When I spoke with Crypt Keeper voice John Kassir back in January, the actor and comedian confirmed that he had not been contacted by producers of TNT's forthcoming revival to reprise the character -- seeming to confirm rumors that the pun-loving ghoul would not be a factor on the new series. And yet producer M. Night Shyamalan appeared to defy those reports during a roundtable at this weekend's WonderCon, where he told reporters that some version of the character will appear on the potential series (via /Film). Here's the quote, you ready? Reporters: Will there be a Crypt Keeper be on the new Tales from the Crypt? Shyamalan: "There will." Of course, that doesn't mean the new series will feature the same Crypt Keeper that we all fell in love with back in the '90s. The rotting puppet voiced by Kassir is actually owned by the producers of the HBO series,...

A number of different voice actors have taken on the role of Deadpool over the years, each bringing his own specific sensibility to the Marvel anti-hero. Among that group is John Kassir, most famous for voicing the Crypt Keeper on HBO's iconic Tales from the Crypt series, who brought the wise-cracking assassin to life in a total of three video games: X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse and both entries in the Marvel: Ultimate Alliance series. With the live-action Deadpool starring Ryan Reynolds hitting theaters on Feb. 12, I took a moment to ask the voice actor (speaking to me about the rumored non-involvement of the Crypt Keeper in M. Night Shyamalan's Tales from the Crypt reboot) how he would rate Reynolds' Deadpool voice. Turns out he likes it, which perhaps isn't surprising considering Reynolds' take is actually quite similar to his. "At first when I saw the commercial for it I was like,...

A few days ago, we wrote about how writer/director/producer M. Night Shyamalan is rebooting the classic horror anthology series Tales From The Crypt, and moving the show from HBO to TNT. The series was a beloved part of many people's childhoods, so naturally the news was met with some hesitation. While a lot of fans are still stung from Shyamalan's string of movies over the past few years, there's some hope that this might be a good fit for him, considering The Visit was a decent return to form, and Wayward Pines received a better reception than anticipated.
