When you've been waiting for a movie as long as we've been waiting for Ironclad, things are never going to end well. There's usually a feeling of heightened expectation for something great, especially when the trailers are as full of bloody awesomeness as these were. We should have known. The fact it only had a limited release regardless of the great cast should have been a warning sign for all of us. But Ironclad isn't just at the mercy of heightened expectation not being met . it's a seriously flawed film, something which is particularly baffling considering it follows the straight forward plotting of a siege.

When they named 'em the Dark Ages, brother, they weren't kidding. The medieval action film "Ironclad" shows England in the period just after the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215, a time of violence, pain, and death. The setting and milieu recall "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" without all the jokes. There is one scene in "Ironclad" where a guy beats another guy to death with a third guy's severed arm -- something so ridiculous it could be funny -- but it's not played for laughs. So if you're in the market for a movie where a guy beats a man to death with a severed arm in a completely non-ironic way, your search is over.
The setting may be "Holy Grail" but the story is "Seven Samurai" with a dash of "Rio Bravo." King John (Paul Giamatti), furious at having been forced to sign Magna Carta, takes systematic...

Tfw opens with a Ketchum adaptation that fails to hit the mark.
Kicking off the 6th Annual Texas Frightmare Weekend was a double feature at the Lewisville Studio Movie Grill. More importantly, this particular double feature showcased two film adaptations of horror novels by the legendary author Jack Ketchum.
The first film, the 2009 Ghost House Underground's Offspring, while technically the 2nd story in Ketchum's controversial Dead River chronicles, starts us off with a bang and immediately sets the tone for the soon-to-be blood drenched evening.
The Setup
It can go without saying that once you've heard the premise of Offspring, you can pretty much figure exactly how the film will play out. The story follows a nomadic clan of primal, cannibalistic humans that hunt along the northeast coast of the U.S. and Canada.

After the failure of Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood and the upcoming, mediocre looking The Eagle, the epic genre has been kind of a slump. The trailer for Ironclad, which stars Paul Giamatti, Brian Cox, James Purefoy and Kate Mara, sadly, does not seem to promise an end to this.
Directed by Jonathan English and co-written by him and Erick Kastel, there’s nothing here you haven’t seen before. You’ve got your staples of the genre, from the color palette, the exploding castle walls, the love interest, the older man who will most likely be a mentor, the corrupt leader, it’s all here. None of the action here provides any excitement, none of the drama (Giamatti yelling) resonates; basically, this is an awful trailer. But, hey, you can watch it right below!

Sneak Peek "Ironclad", the upcoming UK/Us feature, directed by Jonathan English.
Written by English and Erick Kastel, based on a screenplay by Stephen McDool, cast includes Paul Giamatti as 'King John', James Purefoy as 'Marshall', Mackenzie Crook as 'Mark', Jason Flemying as 'Beckett', Derek Jacobi as 'Cornhill' and Kate Mara as 'Lady Isabel', chronicling the siege of 'Rochester Castle' by King John in the year 1215.
Principal photography for the feature started at Dragon International Film Studios near the village Llanharan in Wales, October 9, 2009.
A replica of Rochester Castle was built on the studio complex, with producer Rick Benattar looking to make the film as historically accurate as possible, by "...letting viewers experience the battle as if they were there", meaning in your face mayhem and decapitations.
"Ironclad" is noted as the largest independent production lensed in Wales, produced on a budget of $25 million.

Empire has just released the first image of James Purefoy in the upcoming medieval epic Ironclad, which is currently seeking a release date later this year. The film stars Paul Giamatti, James Purefoy, Richard Attenborough, Robert Carlyle, Bob Hoskins, Pete Postlethwaite, Brian Cox, William Moseley, Jason Flemyng, Mackenzie Crook, Kate Mara, Aneurin Barnard, Erick Kastel and is set for a release later this year. Purefoy is quickly becoming one of my favorite actors and this movie (synopsis below) sounds pretty good.

Yet within months of pledging himself to the great charter, the King reneged on his word and assembled a mercenary army on the south coast of England with the intention of bringing the barons...

Chicago – It’s always nice to see world-famous filmmakers raising awareness about work from their lesser known peers. Where would Eli Roth be without Quentin Tarantino, or Neill Blomkamp be without Peter Jackson, or Danny McBride and Jody Hill be without the better half of Hollywood’s comedy titans? The wonderfully neurotic Paul Giamatti will be stepping into the shoes of a tyrant — King John, in Ironclad, a medieval actioner. Jonathan English will be directing the film, with Solomon Kane himself, James Purefoy, taking the role of the hero.
Variety describes the plot of the film:
Scripted by Erick Kastel and English, the drama pits a member of the formidable Knights Templar (Purefoy) and his “Magnificent Seven” cohorts who defend Rochester Castle against King John and his army in 13th century England.
Hiring Giamatti as your villain kind of preps your film for a silly atmosphere, if Shoot ‘Em Up is any indication of his performance in this film. We have a while to wait for this one — filming begins next month, with an unspecified 2010 release date.
