In our ever-more-fragmented media landscape, we're seeing fewer and fewer recognizable brand-name stars for *everybody*, but we're probably getting more and more recognizable brand-name stars for *somebody*. And that means that people who, to certain individuals, are clearly stars of a certain stature are virtual unknowns to great masses, possibly to majorities. And that's even the case with culture-watching professionals. Take Britt Robertson. I didn't see many "Tomorrowland" reviews calling her an unknown or even a newcomer, thankfully, but plenty of critics are still bending over backwards to reference credits like "Dan in Real Life" or "Delivery Man" as if audiences may struggle to place her. I hear her name and I think of an actress who has been the unquestioned star of at least two network TV shows and one of the stars (if only for a for a season) of a bona fide hit. In the sphere of what I do,...

I interviewed James Ellroy, the great American noir novelist, at La's venerable Pacific Dining Car in April 2001. We were there to discuss his latest book, The Cold Six Thousand, but wound up tackling a myriad of subjects over our three hour lunch. Ellroy sported a snappy fedora that I said would have looked great on Meyer Lansky. He barked a laugh and removed it, displaying his bald pate. When he looked at my full head of 33 year-old hair, his eyes narrowed: "That thing on your head real or a rug?" "Real," I replied. Ellroy exhaled for what seemed like a full minute, then murmured: "Cocksucker." We were off and running.

British filmmaker John Byrum is responsible for the first (and in some ways only) real-time period film. Inserts (1975), set in the early 1930s, is about a Boy Wonder movie director (called Boy Wonder, played by Richard Dreyfuss fresh from American Graffiti (1973) and Jaws (1975)) now washed up before the age of 30, resigned to making porn because of Hollywood’s conversion to sound. Not only is Inserts scrupulously real-time (with the exception of the opening credits sequence, which offers glimpses of the stag film we’re about to see made) and period, but it’s rather long for such a film, just shy of two hours. To tell the entire story would be spoiling the fun, but the Boy Wonder deals with recalcitrant actresses, the problem of his own potency, career problems, death, sex, after-death and after-sex…and in the end, as...

While other undergrads are hanging out with friends on their school breaks, Jack Kennedy Schlossberg is following a family tradition. The Yale student has joined his mom, U.S. Ambassador Caroline Kennedy, in Japan, where he was by her side as she toured the damaged Fukushima nuclear plant and visited an orphanage on Thursday. The youngest child of Kennedy and her husband, Edwin Schlossberg - and only grandson of the late President Kennedy and Jackie Kennedy Onassis - Jack has slowly been stepping up to carry on the family tradition of public service. "He's very proud of his family and their contributions,...

Jessica Chastain has been cast as Marilyn Monroe in director Andrew Dominik's upcoming biopic Blonde.
Brad Pitt's Plan B and Worldview Entertainment will produce the adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates's 2001 novel of the same title, which Naomi Watts originally signed up to star in.
From Michelle Williams to Kerry Katona, we compile 12 other actresses who have portrayed or paid tribute to Hollywood's original blonde bombshell below.

Michelle Williams was Oscar-nominated for her critically-acclaimed performance as Monroe in Simon Curtis's My Week with Marilyn (2011). The movie centered on Monroe's fraught relationship with her then co-star Laurence Olivier, played by Kenneth Branagh, during the production of The Prince and the Showgirl in Britain.

Chicago – The actor Greg Kinnear has been known for his neat and tidy image, but never has he portrayed a religious leader. His role as Todd Burpo – a pastor of a church and the father whose son believes “Heaven Is for Real” – brings the energy of spirituality to the movies just in time for the Easter holiday.
Born in small town Logansport, Indiana, Greg Kinnear was the son of a career diplomat, and moved around quite a bit as a child, even living overseas. He is a veteran actor who first came into prominence when he hosted the first version of “Talk Soup” on the E! Network in 1991. Four years later, he made a splashy film debut as David Larrabee in the 1995 remake of Billy Wilder’s “Sabrina,” directed by Sydney Pollack.

An unusual convergence of historical dates of different emotional resonances for me occurred this weekend – the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and what would have been the sixtieth birthday of my late wife, Kimberly Ann Yale.
Like many Americans, I remember where I was when I heard the news of JFK. I was in my history class at Quigley Preparatory Seminary North near downtown Chicago. The word that the President was shot came over the loudspeaker used for school announcements, followed a little later by the news of his death. I was stunned, in denial. I remember little else of that day. I think school was closed and we were sent home.
Kim’s dad was a Navy chaplain and they were living on-base at the time. She later told me how she was at school off-base and had to hurry back.

Fifty years have passed since November 22, 1963, the fateful afternoon when President John F. Kennedy was slain by an assassin’s bullets in Dallas, Texas. Almost immediately after Kennedy was confirmed dead, widespread speculation and paranoia naturally engulfed the United States regarding the true culprit of arguably one of America’s most horrible crimes in its long history. Such speculation is still very much alive fifty years later, as we’ve undoubtedly seen in the media in recent months and we will no doubt be inundated with more of it this week.
What we know for certain is that at 12:30 pm on November 22, 1963, President Kennedy was riding in an open air motorcade through Dealey Plaza in Dallas with his wife Jackie, Governor John Connally of Texas and his wife Nellie when as many as three shots rang out from a nearby book depository. The first shot is widely believed to have missed the motorcade,...

I’m just going to say it: this was my favorite episode of my favorite show on television right now (I get to say that because Pretty Little Liars is on a break). I come at recapping from a pretty cynical place, both by training and by inclination, but I swear to god I felt my heart grow while watching this episode. And it’s a painful business, growing one’s heart; you stretch it with laughter and tears and terror and triumph, but it’s some of the best work a person can do, or a work of art can inspire. Let’s begin.
Here’s a little tune I call “Happy Happy Joy Joy.”

30 Rock, Season 7, Episode 5, “There’s No I in America”
Written by Josh Siegal & Dylan Morgan
Directed by John Riggi
Airs Thursdays at 8pm Et on NBC
“There’s No I in America” doesn’t possess the strong structure that made “Unwindulax” such a special episode, but it does nothing to interrupt the comedy juggernaut that has been 30 Rock’s seventh season. Something of an olio, it concerns several disparate plotlines revolving around the upcoming presidential election: Kenneth struggles with voting for the first time, Pete tries to recapture the magic that was the Obama victory of 2008, and Jack and Liz stage a debate in order to sway Jenna and by extension her supporters.
These all feature marquee moments: Tracy letting Kenneth know that being an “informed” citizen has never been at the forefront of a country named after the “fourth or fifth guy who discovered it” that still refers to...

Former United States Senator, and Presidential candidate, George McGovern.
In 2005, I had the good fortune to interview former Democratic presidential nominee George McGovern for Venice Magazine, in conjunction with the release of Stephen Vittoria's documentary "One Bright Shining Moment: The Forgotten Summer of George McGovern," which looked at McGovern's ill-fated 1972 bid for the White House. During our interview, and during a lengthy dinner at Kate Mantilini in Beverly Hills several months later, (which happened to fall on what would have been the 80th birthday of his close friend, Robert F. Kennedy), McGovern was thoughtful, direct, and kind-hearted; a gentleman and a gentle man. When we raised a glass to toast Bobby Kennedy's memory, Senator McGovern said quietly "Bobby made us all want to be better people." A more fitting valediction of George McGovern couldn't be said. Rest in peace.

Jackson Pollock and Tony Smith: Sculpture: An Exhibition on the Centennial of their Births and Tony Smith: Source Matthew Marks Gallery Through October 27, 2012
Nominally a show of sculpture, Matthew Marks is presenting something more like relics of art world myth, or a romanticized artist-buddy story (think Lust for Life or Schnabel's Basquiat). It seems an odd pairing at first glance: Pollock, whose paintings consist of poured or dripped skeins of paint and are the archetype of Ab Ex passion, and Tony Smith, whose Buckminster Fuller-like geodesic monuments ushered in an Age of Cool. This show presents the remains of a day, one spent at Smith's New Jersey home, when Smith tried to coax out of the fallow (and soon-to-be-dead) Pollock a few last attempts at making art and ended up becoming a sculptor himself.
This five-work show is essentially a teaser for the uber-Minimal show Source, at Marks's larger space on 24th Street.

Ah, Marilyn Monroe! Deep down, we know that we don’t know her, not really, yet we also think that we know everything about her. We certainly believe that we know who she was on-screen: the bubblehead bombshell, the flirt angel who wiggled and cooed and batted her Bambi eyelashes, who turned sex into pure sugar. And off-screen, we have that whole tabloid sense of Marilyn, of her lousy childhood and her crumbled marriages and her off-the-set breakdowns and her on-the-set diva tantrums and, ultimately, her self-destruction. Her death by an overdose of pills was sort of like the death...

With apologies to Andre Gregory and Wallace Shawn.
When I decided to make the film “One Bright Shining Moment: The Forgotten Summer of George McGovern,” the person to interview at the top of my list was Gore Vidal – for a lot of reasons. First and foremost, he knew McGovern very well and one could always count on Gore to bring his razor sharp wit, his intellectual wherewithal, and his brutal honesty to any situation. For our session in his backyard in the Hollywood Hills, he was on, very on. In fact, to this day, right to a screening last night, his interview clips elicited more great responses from the audience than anyone else in the film. It was the same at almost every screening. Here’s a sample of classic Gore Vidal from the film:

Ever since Anthony Mandler wrapped production on Lana Del Rey's "National Anthem" video a month ago, he has spent just about every day trying to avoid talking about it ... mostly because he knew there'd be no shortage of folks doing just that when the clip premiered. After all, the video — which premiered Wednesday (June 27) and features Del Rey in dual Jacqueline Kennedy/Marilyn Monroe roles and A$AP Rocky as John F. Kennedy — was seemingly destined to create conversation, if not controversy. But now that it's finally been unveiled, he's weighing in on the social and political contexts of the clip (from Portugal, via Skype) to MTV News.

Unlike most presidents, George H.W. Bush has not published a memoir since leaving office. That's about to change, sort of: On June 14 -- just two days after Bush celebrates his 88th birthday -- the HBO documentary "41" will debut.
Written and directed by Jeffrey Roth and produced by Jerry Weintraub, "41" -- named as such because Bush was the 41st president -- will detail the former president's Zelig-like personal life. Bush served in World War II, was U.S. envoy to China, the director of the CIA and Vice President of the United States. Still, don't think "41" is strictly political.
"This is not a political documentary," Weintraub told HuffPost Entertainment. "This is a documentary about the man and his family and where he came from. He's 88 years old on June 12. It's a great time in his life to do something like this and it's in his words."

As you all know, The Dark Knight Rises will be Christopher Nolan's last Batman film, but Warner Bros. has made it clear that the franchise will not die. They already plan to reboot the series, and there's a possibility we will see a whole new Batman movie by 2014. It will be interesting to see who the studio brings on to reboot Batman again. I just don't think it will live up to Nolan's vision.
The La Times have put together a few cool pieces of fun poster art showing us what several different Batman reboots by different directors would look like. For example, the poster above imagines a Batman film called Batman: Mad City, directed by Matthew Vaughn (X-Men: First Class) and starring Michael Fasbender (X-Men: First Class) as Batman. Each poster also comes with a concept description.

The Screen Actors Guild has announced their list of nominations for the best performances of 2011. I have to point out that I'm surprised Tom Hardy and Joel Edgarton weren't nominated for their roles in Warrior, because they were pretty damn awesome in that film. I think they deserved a nom more than Leonardo DiCaprio. I'm a huge fan of DiCaprio but his performance in J. Edgar wasn't his best. Brad Pitt will end up taking home the award for Moneyball though. It was great to see Bridesmaids and The Help get a nomination for best ensemble cast. It will be interesting to see who takes home the award on this list, and how many of them will make their way to the Oscars.
Who would you like to see take home the award?

It's been one crazy year for film and TV and now it's time to see how our favorites made out in SAG nominations. "The Artist," which has pretty much bought up real estate on awards alley, scooped up three nominations. But the list might throw some award oracles for a loop. "Drive," this year's uber-violent favorite, was conspicuously absent -- not even so much as a scorpion-stitched jacket for Albert Brooks' decidedly un-cuddly role. What the what? (Yeah, "30 Rock" did well.)

Regina King and Judy Greer announced the 18th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards this morning, and for Primetime Television, it was more of the usual suspects. Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad, Dexter, and The Good Wife were each nominated for best ensemble drama, in addition to nominations for their respective stars. Steve Carell, who bid farewell to The Office, and Kyle Chandler, whose Friday Night Lights completed its run on NBC, both were recognized. Patrick J. Adams received his first SAG nomination for his work on Suits, and Jessica Lange was honored for her macabre role on FX’s American Horror Story.

Nov. 22, will always been a day that takes America's consciousness back to that fateful day in 1963 in Dallas.
Today marks the 48th anniversary of President JFK's assassination. To reenact an event that is familiar with nearly everyone, Joel Surnow, executive producer of The Kennedys, knew the miniseries had to be historically accurate.
There was a lot of research that went in to it but Stephen Kronish, the writer, has spent a lifetime, the past 40 years, reading and researching The Kennedys just out of his own personal interest, so we basically had a Kennedys scholar from the beginning.
In the miniseries, Greg Kinnear portrayed Jack Kennedy and Katie Holmes played Jackie Kennedy. Holmes said the Kennedys crew succeeded in retelling the events of the Kennedys family, including JFK's assassination.
I think that everyone did an incredible job and it really helped to make the whole thing seem very real.

One of the finest documentaries ever to come out of America, Steve James's Hoop Dreams (1994) followed two black teenagers from Chicago's South Side over a period of five years as they tried to turn their skills at basketball into "a ticket out of the ghetto" via superior high schools and basketball scholarships that would make them rich sporting superstars. It was an intense human drama with an enormous cast, painfully depressing but neither glib nor hectoring, that threw a searching light on American society and an all-embracing system that turned a healthy recreational activity into brutal business. James's latest film, The Interrupters (the subject of a major piece by Andrew Anthony in last Sunday's New Review), is shorter, set in the same Chicago milieu, and equally serious. Though quietly impressive, it's inevitably a lesser thing, lacking Hoop Dreams's narrative force and allegorical power.

Over ten thousand people attended this past weekend’s Dallas Comic-Con. Arguably one of the biggest draws was the appearance of Spock himself, Leonard Nimoy. And he didn’t just merely come to sign autographs and take pictures with fans. Nimoy had prepared a special presentation for Dcc attendees… well, the lucky ones that got into the Main Stage Ballroom, that is!
As Dcc was one of the last conventions Nimoy planned to attend, he put together a retrospective presentation. He decided to do this in lieu of a traditional Q&A session and I must say that it was most fascinating to hear Nimoy lead us down his own memory lane and give us insight into his life as an actor, photographer, and as Spock.
But before the journey back in time began, Nimoy took care of business with addressing a few questions he knew many wanted an answer...

After experiencing the first two hours of the new miniseries, "The Kennedys" -- and it really is an "experience," much like oral surgery or passing a gallstone out of your eyeball is an "experience" -- you begin to understand why the History channel passed on the series. It's not because the History channel was really worried about image or branding -- the channel's highest rated series are "Ice Road Truckers," "Ax Men" and "UFO Hunters," so the idea that a miniseries could tarnish their image any further is like saying that Kevin James passed up that third jelly donut because he was watching his figure. It's not because "The Kennedys" is politically controversial, either -- there's nothing in the series that hasn't been suggested, insinuated, rumored, or documented a thousand times before. Jack Kennedy liked to bang broads! Whoa! Step back! You're blowing my mind!

Greg Kinnear and Barry Pepper play the iconic brothers Bobby and Jack Kennedy in The Kennedys, premiering tonight on ReelzChannel. But it was almost two performances that audiences almost did not see.
Kinnear and Pepper both opened up about the prospect of their performances almost not getting seen after The History Channel decided not the air the in the eight-part movie. Kinnear talked to EW about what he knew about the reasons behind the controversy.
I was surprised of course but over time I read the same stuff everybody else had. I had confidence it would find a home. Honestly, not to sound glib, I’m not sure that I cared. At this point, it’s after the fact. Even if someone tells me, that would be one’s person’s version and I’m sure there are many versions. It happened. Life moves on.

A few days ago I watched the entire 8 hour Kennedys mini-series, which will be airing on ReelzChannel beginning on April 3 (view the entire schedule and a sneak peek for the mini-series here). Of course, most of you will probably know about the controversy surrounding the series. It was originally supposed to air on the History Channel but the network chose to pass on the series after it had been filmed. It was shopped around and eventually acquired by ReelzChannel.
Rumors were abound as to why History Channel chose to pass on the series. Some people say that it was due to historical inaccuracies, while others said that the script was extremely salacious and controversial. In fact, in mid-January, The Daily Beast posted what were apparently script excerpts from the series; eight of them, to be exact. Eight scenes that were apparently in the movie. If any of these eight scenes...

Uh, maybe now we know why the History Channel and so many other networks passed on The Kennedys? Forget a Kennedy curse, this eight-part miniseries seems pretty doomed in its own right. Here's looking at you, Katie Holmes. The miniseries will air on the ReelzChannel, and the trailer was just released online. It's painful. Like, really painful. Tom Wilkinson rarely does any part wrong (though he's borderline here, must say), so it wasn't exactly he who made getting through the trailer hard. But whenever the camera panned to Katie—or Greg Kinnear, as Jack Kennedy—we had such second-hand awkwardness. Tom Cruise's wife looks nothing like Jackie O. At...

Sargent Shriver's signature achievement was no sure thing. Peace Corps volunteer John Coyne on how Shriver worked the levers in a skeptical Washington to make a dream come true. Plus, George McGovern on Shriver's "boundless heart" and Adam Clymer on how Shriver changed America.
In the Peace Corps of the early 1960s, to "Shriverize" an idea meant to enlarge it and apply greater imagination, and then speed up its execution. As an English major, I had never heard the word, but as I learned the lingua franca of the new Peace Corps, this verb would change my life. A Midwestern Catholic boy, I had come of age with the presidency of John F. Kennedy and was a small part of the New Frontier as a Peace Corps volunteer. Like thousands of others, I was going off to change the world. And I was Shriverized by the man himself, R.

Photo via Wikipedia. For years, Connecticut attorney general Richard Blumenthal has hinted that one day, maybe one day, he was going to campaign for higher office, and finally, this year, the “Jewish Jack Kennedy” decided to run for Senator Chris Dodd’s soon-to-be-empty seat. In a year of weak candidates and surging anti-incumbent sentiment, Blumenthal’s was supposed to be one of the few sure Democratic victories. I mean, Linda McMahon—she of the Worldwide Wrestling Entertainment—is one of his likely Republican opponents. This was all until today’s New York Times bombshell article, where it was revealed he might be more of a boringly tragic protagonist in a fancy American novel (Roth? Updike?) than a political failsafe. The article—fueled by opposition research, the Daily Caller reports, discovered and strategically delivered by the McMahon campaign—caught him intimating, or outright stating, that he served in Vietnam, when in...

Until the day he died, I always called him "Daddy." He was Walter Harry Ebert, born in Urbana in 1902 of parents who had emmigrated from Germany. His father, Joseph, was a machinist working for the Peoria & Eastern Railway, known as the Big Four. Daddy would take me out to the Roundhouse on the north side of town to watch the big turntables turning steam engines around. In our kitchen, he always used a knife "your grandfather made from a single piece of steel."
I never met my grandparents, and that knife is the only thing of theirs I own. Once when I was visiting my parents' graves, I wandered over to my grandparents' graves, where we'd often left flowers on Memorial Day. I realized consciously for the first time, although I must have been told, that my grandfather was named Joseph. My middle name.

February has been a good month for American movies in which vulnerable males stare out their bedroom windows at willowy, troubled blondes and grow obsessed. No, Rear Window has not been re-released; in James Gray’s melodrama Two Lovers a Brooklyn Heeb falls for the Shiksa next door, and in William Olsson’s stylistically assured, super-cynical without even realizing it directorial debut An American Affair, a slick, low-budget period movie with the cozy art direction of a Danish furniture commercial without even blinking an eye suggests that Jack Kennedy was a man of many mistresses and woefully foreseeable enemies. Such is our post-Watergate American existence that we no longer see politicians as enlightened, civic minded individuals in an ennobling vocation. Such is our post-Lewinsky American existence that we are no longer shocked or even especially aroused by our political leaders' sexual misdeeds. S ...
