Reacting to Tony To’s move to Lucasfilm, Disney has hired Philip Steuer to be Svp Physical Production, for the studio’s live-action film group. Steuer produced Saving Mr. Banks and all three Chronicles Of Narnia films. His executive producing credits include Oz The Great And Powerful, The Rookie, and Disney’s upcoming Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, due out in October. So he has experience in logistically challenging films, and knows the studio infrastructure. Executives who deal with issues of film and TV production in Los Angeles agree on two things: Runaway production is a problem, and Hollywood's image troubles don't help gain sympathy for the issue with the rest of the country. Representatives from the worlds of entertainment, government and academia gathered Thursday at the Beverly Hilton to discuss the state of the entertainment industry at a luncheon sponsored by the Entertainment Industry Business Council of the Chambers of Commerce. Robert J. Dowling, editor-in-chief and publisher of The Hollywood Reporter, moderated the hourlong discussion. Panelists included Michael Bazdarich, senior economist with the UCLA Anderson School Forecast; Rep. Xavier Becerra, D-Calif.; Andy Davis, executive vp of MGM; L.A. City Councilwoman Wendy Greuel; Jerry Ketcham, senior vp motion picture production at Walt Disney Pictures; and Steve MacDonald, executive director of the Entertainment Industry Development Corp.
