This story about “Women Talking” first appeared in the Below-the-Line issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
On the surface, Sarah Polley’s “Women Talking” is one of the ultimate examples of a 2022 film that largely takes place in a single location. Polley adapted the novel by Miriam Toews, which was itself based on the true story of a Mennonite clan in Bolivia that was rampant with sexual abuse, and the action rarely leaves the hayloft of a barn in an isolated community.
In that loft, a group of women has been deputized to decide for all of the community’s female members, who must choose whether they should flee the men who have been systematically drugging and raping them or stay in the only place many of them have known.

Just over a year and a half ago I had a baby, and my son is a beautiful bundle of joy who is growing rapidly by the day. But we live in a different age now, and although we have a huge cinematic adventure ahead of us, there are some things I’m quite sad about that he is going to miss out on in this digital age, starting with...

The Voice UK is in its fourth week of blind auditions and things are getting serious. Well, sort of. I mean, there was still time for Sir Tom Jones and Ricky Wilson to gush about their blossoming bromance. But not much time, because fifteen acts tried to get those chairs spinning in tonight's show.
Ten of them made it through, too, making this a pretty packed instalment of blind auditions - but who made the biggest impression? Who will we be excited about seeing in the next round? Read on to find out what we thought of this week's auditionees...

Good morning! I'm so out of whack from traveling across the country to Philadelphia and back over the weekend. But I promise I have a lot of great things to share with you from that experience, so look out for it later today.
One of the people I met at the Lgbt Media conference is Faith Cheltenham, who wrote this rad piece about black bisexual women for The Huffington Post. I've co-opted Faith to write some pieces for AfterEllen, so stay tuned!
Out Ufc fighter Liz Carmouche lost her big fight over the weekend, but she went down with a rainbow mouthpiece. She tweeted that she might be down, but not out.
I gave 100% tonight. Thank you for your support! I shall return. #lizbos

Suze Orman penned an important piece for CNN about how much gay Americans end up paying in taxes.

Over a decade ago, Staceyann Chin burst onto the scene with Russell Simmons’ “Def Poetry Jam” on Broadway. Sharing the stage with other prominent poets and hip-hop artists, she garnered a Tony Award for her performance.
Chin, known for candidly revealing her frustrating childhood in Jamaica -- a country known for homophobia -- said she became aware of a growing interest in her experience as a Jamaican lesbian immigrant. In 2010, she released her critically acclaimed memoir, The Other Side Of Paradise.
Chin, 40, a lover of “a good story,” is now working on a new book about motherhood and parenting. When she’s not writing, on stage or traveling the world, she's hosting comrades for tea, wine, “crap TV,” or political talk. In the living room of her Brooklyn apartment, her daughter by her side, Chin chatted with HuffPost about homophobia, Jamaica, motherhood, and more.

Happy birthday to the one and only Sarah Shahi!

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey really want you to watch them host the Golden Globes on Sunday. They even created a drinking game to make the show more interactive. Here are the rules:
Drink any time an actress cries in a speech.
Drink any time you see a person actively not listening to someone onstage.
Drink any time someone says, "I didn't prepare anything!"
Eat a meatball sub any time someone thanks Harvey Weinstein.
Take off an article of clothing any time they show Judi Dench.
Take off an article of clothing any time Maggie Smith wins.
Thankfully, Salma Hayek will be returning to 30 Rock for the show's big finale. I miss you already, Liz Lemon.

After coming out last week in a beautifully penned blog post, R&B singer Frank Ocean received an outpouring of support from friends, collaborators and admirers like Tyler the Creator, Trina and lesbian country singer Chely Wright.
Over the weekend Beyoncé joined that list when she posted a poem superimposed over a photo of Ocean on her website.
The text reads:
"Be fearless. Be honest. Be generous. Be brave. Be poetic. Be open. Be free. Be yourself. Be in love. Be happy. Be inspiration."
Ocean penned the song "I Miss You" from Beyoncé's latest album, "4," which was released last year. The lyrics to the song read, in part, "It don't matter who you are / It is so simple / A feeling / But it's everything / No matter who you love..." and seem worthy of a new interpretation in light of his recent revelation.

Favorite Vocal/Singing Coach: Jackie Presti "Singing is a big coordination act, and I think a lot of people come in focusing on one aspect," says voice therapist and teacher Jackie Presti. "It's sort of like juggling and riding a bike and reciting Shakespeare at the same time."Clearly, Presti, who's also a singer, musician, and conductor, hits the right notes with her students. Her knowledge of both technical and artistic matters, not to mention her versatility and flexibility as a teacher, appealed to Valerie Ryan Miller, who has studied with her for three years. "After developing a strong belt, and a lot of vocal tension," Miller says, "I came to Jackie, who has expanded my range enormously—we are talking octaves!
