ESPN is getting in on the biggest game at corporate parent Disney: shuffling top executive ranks in the wake of the return of CEO Bob Iger.
ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro handed oversight of content and newsgathering to Burke Magnus, a veteran executive who has helped the sports-media giant strike sports-rights deals with most of the major sports leagues as well as set in motion new content initiatives. Magnus has been named president of content, according to a new memo from Pitaro reviewed by Variety, and will supervise studio shows, live events, newsgathering, investigative journalism, original content/ESPN Films, talent, audio, digital, and social media.
Meanwhile, Rosalyn Durant, a Disney veteran who has been overseeing Disney facilities in its parks division, will return to ESPN as executive vice president of programming and acquisitions, the ESPN position that negotiates for the rights that keep a significant chunk of live sports on Disney’s media portfolio.

"What are you experiencing?" Minds Eye has released an official trailer for indie action-thriller Distorted, the latest from director Rob W. King, who also made the very cheesy sci-fi film The Humanity Bureau with Nicolas Cage. This film stars Christina Ricci as a woman with biopolar disorder who moves into a "smart apartment" with her husband. But they soon suspect something is up, and realize that the owner is using the residents as unwitting guinea pigs for a "synthetic telepathy'" brainwashing plot. John Cusack co-stars, including Brendan Fletcher, Vicellous Shannon, Nicole Anthony, Oliver Rice, Gigi Jackman, and Maja Milkovich. This seems like it was a cool pitch at first, but the film itself looks boring and forgettable. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Rob W. King's Distorted, direct from YouTube: A 32-year-old woman suffering from bipolar disorder comes to suspect the proprietor of the state-of-the-art "smart apartment" she...

Though not so long ago nearly every Nicolas Cage movie was a big-budget, wide-release affair, these days his movies are mostly so low-profile you might be forgiven for not knowing he still makes ’em — let alone that he’s done some of his best-ever work very recently. The gonzo displays of blackly comedic quasi-horror pics “Mom and Dad” and “Mandy” fall into that category (though recent thriller “Looking Glass” served no one particularly well), and new Canadian feature “The Humanity Bureau” is none too shabby a showcase, either.
This dystopian road movie is very specifically set in a near-future U.S., but in character couldn’t be more Canuck: more interested in character dynamics and shaggy humor than spectacle, more picaresque than action-driven. Still, director Rob W. King and screenwriter Dave Schultz’s engaging effort has enough standard genre elements to satisfy more open-minded sci-fi fans, and its political-allegory angle...

ScreenAnarchy has your first look at the trailer for Rob W. King's dystopian thriller The Humanity Bureau starring Nicolas Cage. The Humanity Bureau is the second title in a six-picture slate deal between Minds Eye Entertainment, Vmi worldwide and Bridgegate Pictures following Wesley Snipes's The Recall, which was recently released. Shot in Canada, The Humanity Bureau used the new Barco Escape multi-screen, panoramic movie format, which is supposed to offer the ultimate immersive cinematic experience that uses three screens to fully surround the viewer. Portions of the films will also be shot in Virtual Reality. Looking at this trailer it's hard to imagine how any of that works, and experiencing the film in the intended way would depend on whether the film gets a theatrical...

Minds Eye Entertainment has recently started working on a new project starring John Cusack and Christina Ricci, and it seems pretty interesting.
The film is called Distorted, and it's about an artist (Ricci) who suffers from bi-polar disorder, and who recently lost her child. She and her husband move into a high-tech apartment complex. The owner, however, might have some dark plans of his own for his tenants, involving subliminally controlling them, so Ricci asks for help from an investigative journalist played by Cusack.
It also will star Brendan Fletch and is written by Arne Olsen and directed by Rob W. King. Overall, it sounds interesting. A great deal will depend on the style of filming. I think a story like this with a cyber conspiracy could be a great idea, especially since there haven't been many of those movies as of late. We'll have to see when it is released.

Nicolas Cage recently set out to turn the tide of World War II in USS Indianapolis: Men Of Courage and hunt Osama Bin Laden by his lonesome in Larry Charles’ Army Of One. His cinematic do-gooding isn’t over yet, as he’s just signed on to lead a sci-fi thriller about the dangers of global warming. Rob King’s The Humanity Bureau will star Cage as an agent of the titular organization, which has the power to banish “unproductive” members of society from within its non-ravaged confines. As Kross, Cage will be a company man at first, who remains “impartial” while he goes around deeming the worth of others. Luckily, Kross has a change of heart after investigating an appeal by a single mother and her son. He then goes from model employee—who, if you think about it, would be a horrible person in general—to whistleblower. That...

The N-word. Do we have your attention? Good, because that’s what Espn is going for on Sunday evening, when they air a one-hour “Outside the Lines” special report on what is arguably the English language’s ugliest word. To cast the special roundtable discussion, which is part of the network’s Black History Month programming, Rob King, senior vice president of “SportsCenter” and News, had to dig deep into Espn’s pre-vetting to find out who is willing to speak out on the polarizing topic. What he came up with, was a panel spanning music, TV, media, academics and sports.

SciFinal has established itself as a web directory focused on providing information and links about independently produced science fiction web series. What began as a response at frustration at the lack of opportunities to promote their own series, Steve Lettieri, Rob King, and Chris Conway started with a platform that showcased 10 shows and now, less than a year later, includes over 120 shows. The SciFinal team has always been an advocate of independent production, specifically when it comes to the promotion of scifi. Tubefilter had a chance to chat with Lettieri about the beginnings of SciFinal, it's latest foray into series production as well as Lettieri's recommendations for some great scifi series fans may not yet be aware of.

- Following my top ten Tiff list of titles available piece that I published a couples of hours back, Tiff released the lengthy list of titles that are looking for deals. Among those that I didn't mention in my top ten but could have easily have been there is the omission of Micmacs à tire-larigot (I wasn't sure if Warner Bros. only had domestic rights for France and not world rights), and titles such as Neil Jordan's Ondine, Atom Egoyan's Chloe, Oliver Parker's Dorian Gray, Aaron Schneider's Get Low, Derrick Borte's The Joneses and Michael J. Bassett's Solomon Kane should be generating key interest from the buyers as well. Without further ado, here is the list. L’Affaire Farewell Christian Carion, France Ahead of Time Bob Richman, USA The Angel Margreth Olin, Norway/Sweden/Finland The Art of the Steal Don Argott, USA Baaria Giuseppe Tornatore,
