The biggest event of the 38th Grammy Awards, which took place in February 1996, was Mariah Carey’s infamous shutout across all six of her nominations. The R&b and pop singer-songwriter was expected to pick up multiple Grammys due to the success of her album “Daydream.” Yet, as the ceremony progressed, Carey and the audience quickly realized that “Daydream” wasn’t as strong as most thought. There’s one category in particular that had to seem locked for Carey more so than anything else: Best Pop Vocal Album. Being the first award of the telecast, “Daydream’s” loss to Joni Mitchell’s “Turbulent Indigo” really set the stage for the rest of the Carey-snubbage that was about to take place. However, even without Carey, Mitchell’s win would’ve been just as shocking with top-selling albums from artists like Madonna and The Eagles also nominated. In the end, it was...

Iggy Pop has shared a new cover of Leonard Cohen’s 2016 track “You Want It Darker.” Pop’s version of the spoken word song, which appeared on Cohen’s final album before his death, is pensive and moody as Pop fills in for Cohen’s gravel-tinged croon.
“There’s nobody like Leonard,” Pop noted in a statement about why he wanted to cover the song. “Not in the whole world.”

Smoky casinos, ceaselessly chiming slot machines, and drinking that happens so early it almost perverts the concept of day-drunk — Las Vegas has it all. This year, it also had the Grammys. Outside the main event, the 2022 edition of “Music’s Biggest Night” didn’t draw as many parties as it has in the past, but it turned out less was more this time around — a phrase surely never before uttered in the land of buffets and 8 a.m. cocktails.

Going through the list of previous Album of the Year Grammy winners, you’ll see some familiar faces. Taylor Swift and Adele pop up a couple times, you’ll see critically beloved records like Kacey Musgraves’s “Golden Hour” and Arcade Fire’s “The Suburbs,” some veterans like Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, as well as some big blockbusters like Santana’s “Supernatural.” But among those somewhat predictable picks over the last couple of decades, one sticks out immediately: Herbie Hancock for “River: The Joni Letters.” Now, if you’re on the younger side you might have no idea who Hancock even is, but if you were watching the 2008 Grammys then you were probably shocked by Hancock’s seemingly out-of-nowhere victory. Let’s take a look back.

This year’s American Music Awards show is looking at some big changes behind the scenes, as ABC and Dick Clark Productions are announcing that Jesse Collins — recently of the Grammys and Oscars — is taking over as showrunner and executive producer, starting with the telecast set for Nov. 21 of this year.
Collins has been on quite the roll recently. In the first half of 2021, he produced the Weeknd’s Super Bowl halftime show, was a co-executive producer of the Grammys, and co-produced the Oscars — as close to a triple crown as you can get in winter and spring TV entertainment events. These followed his production of the 2020 BET Awards, which was regarded by many as the best of the reinvented pandemic-era television awards show broadcasts.
Jesse Collins Entertainment is also being named as a producer of the AMAs, alongside Dick Clark Productions.

The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, the Harry Potter films, Star Wars, Avengers: Endgame – Abbey Road Studios has been a part of them all, staying at the center of the world’s culture since it first opened on Nov. 12, 1931 as one of the first buildings devoted to sound recordings.

In the Trump era, the protest song can be properly angry — see Gary Clark Jr.’s “This Land.” But it can also be quiet and thoughtful, almost mournful, as if the onslaught of troubling news is simply too much to handle. Lana Del Rey’s breathy-folk response to mass shootings, “Looking for America,” is one example, and Jon Regen’s “Before” can now be added to that slowly growing pile.

Dick Clark Productions and ABC announced today that Tracee Ellis Ross, star of ABC’s hit comedy “Black-ish,” will return as host and an executive producer for the “2018 American Music Awards.”
The actress was a strong host at last year’s show, which she promised would focus on “women who take up space.” Indeed, with stellar performances from Pink (who sang while rapelling down the side of a hotel outside the theater), Kelly Clarkson and a show-closing tribute to Ross’ mother, legendary singer Diana Ross, the show was dominated by female performers — in an interesting contrast to the Grammy Awards held several weeks later, which were harshly criticized for their lack of female artists.

“This is the third year and it’s kind of becoming a thing,” said manager and environmentalist Keith Addis, surveying the annual backyard benefit concert for Oceana, the seawater conservation organization, held at his home in the Los Feliz hills. “Sting was the first. [Don] Henley was the second. They’re all guys who have supported Oceana in the past so they’re pre-enrolled in the cause.”
This year’s talent? Dead & Company, who performed a seven-song set — perhaps the smallest (only 260 guests) and shortest in the band’s legendary history — on Sunday night (July 8) that included such favorites as “Dark Star,” “Shakedown Street” and “Franklin’s Tower.” Among the revelers in the crowd were Shiri Appleby, Kelly Lynch, Eli Roth and Rodger Berman, husband of fashion designer Rachel Zoe.
“Their manager, Bernie Cahill, is a really good friend of mine,” Addis said. “Normally, it takes me a couple of months to lock down the talent.

She’s a pinball wizard.
Unfortunately, this afternoon Joni Mitchell has been unable to locate any machines in the downtown Westwood area of Los Angeles, so she settles for an excursion to a local video-game arcade. She finds a Galaga machine in the back and eagerly antes up a few quarters. Before too long, though, she appears dissatisfied. “I’m playing a real chickenshit game here,” Mitchell says. “I’m sticking in the corners too much. I’ve got to get to the middle more. I’m playing way too safe.
