The terror in "The Twilight Zone" always comes from "What if?" What if there was a little boy with way too much power for anyone to tell him "no"? What if what you thought of as Heaven turned out to be more like Hell? What if man-eating aliens arrived and made humans as docile as lambs to the slaughter?
These questions may be outrageous fantasy, but the terror of them is timeless. We still watch "The Twilight Zone" decades later, and the best episodes can still leave you chilled -- all thanks to the imagination of series creator Rod Serling.
Serling is synonymous with "The Twilight Zone" even for casual viewers; one could call him TV's first auteur. His reputation was as much thanks to his on-camera work as his writing. Serling was the narrator of "The Twilight Zone," introducing and closing out each episode. (He got the job after...

After changing up his style and genre with the Tom Hanks-led western News of the World, Paul Greengrass will be jumping back into the political drama with his next film He’s signed on to helm Night of Camp David, based on Fletcher Knebel’s 1965 novel of the same name.
Deadline reports the fictional story follows a young senator Jim MacVeagh and President Mark Hollenbach who takes him under his wing. As Hollenbach begins inviting MacVeagh on private trips to Camp David, MacVeagh begins observing President Hollenbach’s increasingly erratic behavior, detailing vast conspiracy theories and plans for the country––which certainly has parallels to the last four years in the United States, with the book even getting republished in 2018.
Greengrass will be re-teaming with frequent collaborator Universal, following his Bourne films, United 93, and News of the World. For more on his latest work, listen to our conversation...

Paul Greengrass (“News of the World”) will direct the adaptation of “Night at Camp David,” based on the 1965 novel by Fletcher Knebel that evokes the Donald Trump presidency, according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
Greengrass will also produce the project with frequent collaborator Gregory Goodman. The duo have previously worked together on the “Jason Bourne” franchise and “Captain Phillips.”
Jed Mercurio, who created Richard Madden’s hit British police political-thriller television series “Bodyguard,” is writing the script. Universal’s executive vice president of Production Matt Reilly will oversee the project on behalf of the studio.
The synopsis for “Night at Camp David” is as follows: “One man in the free world has the power to launch a nuclear war that might destroy civilization: the President of the United States. What if that man were mentally unbalanced? This is the horrifying possibility that faces Jim MacVeagh, a young senator from Iowa,...

Greengrass will direct and produce alongside Gregory Goodman. Jed Mercurio (Bodyguard) is adapting.
Book’s logline: Senator Jim MacVeagh is proud to serve his country—and his president, Mark Hollenbach, who has a near-spotless reputation as the vibrant, charismatic leader of MacVeagh’s party and the nation. When Hollenbach begins taking MacVeagh into his confidence, the young senator knows that his star is on the rise. But then Hollenbach starts summoning MacVeagh in the middle of the night to Camp David. There, the president sits in the dark and rants about his enemies, unfurling insane theories about all the people he says are conspiring against him. They would do anything, President Hollenbach tells the stunned senator, to stop him...

Election Day is just around the corner, and depending on your view of the current state of The Republic, you can look at that day in one of two ways:
It’s a national celebration of history’s greatest, most successful democracy, demonstrating our ability to freely choose our leadership and peacefully see the baton of power passed to the next man;
Or –
It’s a national embarrassment, history’s greatest, most successful democracy squandering it’s hard-won freedoms in a campaign for leadership poisoned by oversimplification, appeals to gut-level fears rather than the intellect, claims and charges plagued by inflation, distortion, and outright falsehood, and warped and distorted by the infusion of tens of millions of dollars from vested interests.
Either way, we still have to get through the day.
So, for those of you who just want to pull the shades and wait for the noise to die down,...

The call to give films with smoking an 18 certificate is part of a trend of flawed initiatives to protect us from our foolish impulses
The American author and columnist Fletcher Knebel famously said that "smoking is one of the leading causes of statistics" but, if the announcement of new research by the UK Centre for Tobacco Control Studies (Ukctcs) is anything to go by, statistics on smoking and the studies that furnish them are becoming a leading cause of a zealously cautious approach to our personal welfare.
Published by the British Medical Journal, the study recommends that films that feature smoking actors should automatically qualify for an 18 certificate because of the bad example they set our children. Under these recommendations, the least offensive of Cruella de Vil's many character faults would see Disney's 101 Dalmations given the same adult-only rating that a visceral, blood-pumping horror flick receives.
It's undoubtedly a question...
