'Finding Neverland' movie: Johnny Depp as James M. Barrie, with the Llewelyn Davies family: Kate Winslet, Freddie Highmore, Joe Prospero, Nick Roud and Luke Spill. 'Finding Neverland' movie review: Losing reality Back in 2001, German-born director Marc Forster (Quantum of Solace, World War Z) brought a much welcome non-Hollywood touch to the independently made psychological drama Monster's Ball. Besides the daring (if way overlong) sex scenes, that film imparted a refreshingly realistic atmosphere that was much enhanced by Forster's minimalist approach. As the title implies, his follow-up effort, Finding Neverland (2004), has absolutely nothing to do with reality, whether Peter Pan author James M. Barrie's or anyone else's. Even so, Forster's early, no-nonsense directorial touch is sorely missing from what is little more than your usual big-studio holiday movie whose “magical moments” might as well have been created by a computer. Glee's Matthew Morrison is making his return to Broadway as the star of Finding Neverland. Morrison will play J.M. Barrie in the musical based on Allan Knee's play The Man Who Was Peter Pan and the 2004 film which starred Johnny Depp as the Peter Pan author. Morrison last appeared on Broadway in the 2008 revival of South Pacific, before he became known as Glee's Will Schuester. Morrison played Barrie when the show was being workshopped, but Jeremy Jordan took it on for its run at the American Repertory Theater this past summer. "We couldn’t be more thrilled...

Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Well, a few things, maybe.
It’s not at all hard to understand why Harvey Weinstein turned to Diane Paulus to overhaul Finding Neverland, the musical based on Miramax’s 2004 movie starring Johnny Depp as Peter Pan creator J.M Barrie. Paulus brings a broad catholicity of taste to her work as artistic director of the non-profit American Repertory Theatre, and that wide-ranging sensibility has led to her own souped-up, physically dazzling revivals of Hair and Pippin, both of which moved to Broadway.
When a 2012 tryout in Leicester, England under the leadership of Rob Ashford was met with yawns, Weinstein sent Finding Neverland back to the drawing board. In addition to hiring Paulus, he replaced Allan Knee (who wrote The Man Who Was Peter Pan, the basis for the film) with James Graham as book writer. U.K. pop-music specialists Gary Barlow...

For the last few years, moviegoers have been left unsure when they would be getting the chance to go back to Narnia. American audience numbers slacked off over the course of the two sequels following 2005.s megahit The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, but the foreign box office remained strong. As a result it wasn.t really a surprise when the Mark Gordon Company and the C.S. Lewis company announced last month that an upcoming adaptation of Lewis. The Silver Chair was in the works, and they.ve now hired the Academy Award-nominated screenwriter David Magee to pen this third sequel in the franchise. Perhaps they.re hoping they can make up in critical acclaim what ticket sales may fail to bring in. Recently, screenwriter David Magee sat down with Barbara Morgan, co-founder and executive director of the Austin Film Festival, to discuss his first screenplay, Finding Neverland (2004). The event was part of Aff's ongoing Conversations in Film series. Magee's discussion about how he ventured into screenwriting hit several topics of interest to writers.
Getting started
In addition to adapting the play Finding Neverland, Magee has worked on two other adaptations: Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day (2008) and last year's Life of Pi. Magee started the discussion by sharing how he came to write screenplays.
"I took an unusual route," he told the Austin audience. He meant that he started as a theatre actor and then began doing voiceover work for abridged audiobooks. It was during this time that he encountered a rather difficult project.
"One night, after reading an awful abridgement of a novel, I said to the producer,...

Last week, speaking on Front Row on Radio 4, the director of the National theatre, Nicholas Hytner, called on our government to reinstate the money it has cut from the budgets of out-of-London theatres.
His argument gains clout with this world premiere in Leicester of the musical about Jm Barrie's creation of Peter Pan and based on the 2004 Miramax film starring Johnny Depp. The show is produced by Harvey Weinstein, co-founder of Miramax and the force behind numerous award-winning stage and screen hits including The Producers and The King's Speech. He chose Curve, not just because of the theatre's stunning facilities but also because of its reputation for high-quality musicals under the directorship of Paul Kerryson. If Finding Neverland, directed and choreographed by Rob Ashford, isn't up there with Curve's recent productions of 42nd Street or Gypsy, that's nothing to do with the talents of the excellent 21-strong cast,...

The news that Miramax co-founder Harvey Weinstein was to make the leap into theatrical production with a musical version of his 2004 movie aroused a flurry of speculation: that Gwyneth Paltrow might be in it (she isn't); that Bono and the Edge would be paying a visit (they have). It's certainly a coup for the Curve to be the focus for such an event: though what actually emerges is an industriously staged, if slightly anaemic, adaptation of a flawed and semi-imagined biopic.
Dh Lawrence observed that "Jm Barrie has a fatal touch for those he loves. They die." It's hardly the premise for an uplifting, family musical; and Allan Knee's book romanticises events to say the least. It takes for granted that Barrie's cuckoo-like inveiglement into the Llewelyn Davies family was more of a blessing than a curse. The boys' mother, Sylvia, is conveniently introduced as a widow (in fact,...

Actor has been offered lead role in musical adaptation set to open in Leicester this autumn, according to reports
A musical adaptation of Finding Neverland will receive its world premiere at the Leicester Curve this autumn, with Gwyneth Paltrow rumoured to be leading the cast.
Rob Ashford, who recently won his fifth Olivier award for last year's Donmar Warehouse revival of Anna Christie, will direct the production, which is adapted from the Oscar-winning film that starred Johnny Depp as the author and playwright Jm Barrie.
Finding Neverland imagines the story behind Barrie's novel Peter Pan, as the author rediscovers his creative spark after meeting Sylvia Llewelyn Davies – played by Kate Winslet in the film – and her four sons.
Allan Knee, whose play The Man Who Was Peter Pan inspired the film in the first instance, will write the book with music and lyrics by Scott Frankel and Michael Korie. The production,...

Scream star Neve Campbell is returning to the stage, after an 11-year break from theatre. The 30-year-old actress - whose last onstage appearance was in the Toronto, Canada production of The Phantom Of The Opera - will perform in Allan Knee's play Syncopation, which will open in New York City on October 24. She says, "I just feel the urge to get back on stage now. I'm sort of disappointed in the scripts I'm reading. I would rather go do a play than sit at home moping. I know it will help me grow as an actor, and it will be good to work my muscles again." In the play, Campbell will portray an introverted factory worker in turn-of-the- century New York who dreams about dancing, and subsequently takes up ballroom lessons, where she meets and falls in love with a man with similar fantasies.
