For her fourth feature film, Dutch filmmaker Sacha Polak appears to be moving into an area that blurs the lines – promising “a fictional story with documentary components.” Returning to the Berlinale next month for a third time, Polak’s 2012 debut Hemel was followed by 2015’s Zurich and 2019’s Dirty God (Sundance’s World Cinema Dramatic Competition selection and Rotterdam). Silver Haze won a Les Arcs Festival Work-in-Progress special mention for its “striking cinematography, and the way Polak works with the actors” Re-teaming with her Dirty God actress Vicky Knight (who inspired Polak – as this feature utilizes part of Knight’s past), this also features Esmé Creed-Miles, Charlotte Knight, Archie Brigden and Angela Bruce.…...

Exclusive: Start Media has optioned film and television rights to Jonathan Stroud’s award-winning young adult fantasy series, The Bartimaeus Sequence. It gives a new lease on life for a four-book fantasy series whose publishing and screen rights were bought by Miramax for a whopping $3 million back in 2002, and then proceeded to languish.
Start Media’s Michael Maher, whose credits include the Sony pic Passengers, said he spent several years untangling the rights. He arranged to pay the money against the project upon start of production, and will finance development. Even though the first deal got made nearly two decades ago, he believes there is ripe potential for a studio tent pole with fresh IP that perhaps is best classified as a darker Harry Potter.
The book was originally by then Miramax chief Harvey Weinstein in the wake of the success of Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings,...

UK retailer Game has announced plans to sell movies in-store and online.
A range of 50 movies, including Kill Bill, Avatar, Life of Pi and Argo, will be available to purchase at Game from Monday, May 13.
The scheme was greenlit following a successful trial period in which the store stocked The Hobbit and Skyfall.
Game category director Charlotte Knight said that movies are closely tied to the gaming lifestyle.
"Gaming and movies go together hand-in-hand - you only need to look at the cinematic effects found in many games, along with how many games are based on films and vice versa, to understand how closely the two are related," Knight explained.
"Introducing this range of movies is another big step towards delivering for every aspect of a gamer's lifestyle."
Knight added: "We've already had very encouraging performances on The Hobbit and Skyfall, and we're confident that the time is right to extend our range.

Check out these first images from Switch, a new short horror film produced, written, edited and directed by British filmmaker Melanie Light, usually known for her production design on horror films like Scarcrow. Switch was produced by Charlotte Knight, with cinematography by Nicolas Britt, and stars Kitty Broadhurst and Robin King.
Light calls Switch "a battle of the sexes." Lots of societal references, and her feelings on large corporations dominate, along with a punk aesthetic in regards to costume.
"There's a strong element of girl power," she says...
"My male character is on his way home, but gets distracted by a female jogging out in the snowy roads. He decides to pursue her, leading to a nasty conclusion... One night I just thought, you know what, I'm sick of all the boys getting all the glory and fun killing people in their movies and I think its about time I had a go.
