Exclusive: Channel 5 is on the brink of finding a new producer for its next Jane McDonald and Susan Calman shows. This follows owner Paramount Global’s decision to close the Viacom International Studios (Vis) UK unscripted division, revealed by Deadline last month.
Deadline understands that Daisybeck Studios, which makes some of Channel 5’s biggest hits including The Yorkshire Vet and Our Yorkshire Farm, is extremely close to taking on the work with two of the channel’s highest-profile presenters. Based in Leeds, eOne-owned Daisybeck is a trusted Channel 5 supplier that has made hundreds of hours of shows for the channel including many that focus on the outfit’s native Yorkshire.
The move comes as Paramount begins the process of apportioning dozens of hours of Vis’s factual programing to the UK indie sector.

Globalisation isn’t just about lax child labour laws lowering the price of t-shirts; it also has its downsides. Global markets have a tendency to replace local idiosyncrasy with the accessibly bland. Should, for instance, the makers of Sweden’s chocolate Plopp Bar ever branch out into English-speaking territories, they’d be forced to rename their product to something much less funny, and we’d all be the worse off for it.

Discovery is to close 10% of roles in the UK as part of a restructure that will place a greater emphasis on Discovery+ following its British launch last October.
The U.S. broadcasting giant announced the plans to its 100-strong UK workforce on Thursday, cementing an increasingly apparent strategy to make Discovery+ the home of originals commissioning.
The restructure hands increased power to senior figures in the UK. Clare Laycock, senior vice-president and head of lifestyle and entertainment brands, will now also oversee program and media planning, as well as audience insights. Her new title is SVP planning, and lifestyle and entertainment head of content.
Simon Downing, head of factual and sports, will take on responsibility for linear and digital marketing and communications. His new title is SVP marketing, and factual and sports head of content. Commissioner Charlotte Reid has also been promoted to vice-president of lifestyle and entertainment.

Joanna Lumley, Ray Winstone and Richard Wilson are among celebs who will appear in a series of short films which aimed at getting more military veterans into ‘civvy street’.

Entitled, ‘Veterans Work’, the films, by The Drive Project, were produced to encourage UK businesses to consider veterans as viable options to fill vacancies.
Their release follows a study by Deloitte and the Officers’ Association and the Forces in Mind Trust, which revealed UK plc is failing to realise the potential of veterans, putting ex-military personnel at a disadvantage.

In a candid admission, Prince William says he is still in shock over the sudden death of his mother, Princess Diana — even nearly 20 years later.
“The shock is the biggest thing,” he says in the new BBC documentary Mind Over Marathon, which airs in the U.K. on Thursday. “I still feel, 20 years later about my mother, I still have shock within me . . . People say shock can’t last that long, but it does. You never get over it. It’s such an unbelievably big moment in your life that it never leaves you, you just learn to deal with it.

Last Spring there was a British indie called Golden Years – a film which has, for the most part, an identical narrative structure to what we’re now seeing in Hollywood picture Going in Style. Though the credentials of the cast is wildly different, not to mention the resources available to the respective filmmakers – there’s little that separates the two movies in terms of quality, and the former was written by Diy Sos’s very own Nick Knowles. This time, our primary storyteller is Zach Braff, a filmmaker accused of being too overtly quirky, and contrived in his commitment to whimsicality in his preceding endeavours. So now while he’s thankfully toned it down somewhat, he’s gone too far in the opposite direction, presenting a film that is frustratingly generic.

This comedy drama about a group of older people embarking on a crime spree falls flat
The dearth of – and appetite for – films featuring older protagonists was demonstrated by the success of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and its sequel. So in theory, this light-hearted comedy drama about a group of OAPs who decide to supplement their pension shortfalls with a crime spree should find a receptive audience. In practice, however, despite a likable cast of television and theatre stalwarts, this limps along like a botched hip operation. The production values lack polish and the performances lack vital life signs, but the main problem is a screenplay (co-written by Nick Knowles, present of Diy Sos) that leans heavily on jokes that are older than the cast and that stopped being funny several millennia ago.

BBC One's brand new Saturday night gameshow Can't Touch This is among a raft of new entertainment programmes which have been ordered by the broadcaster.
The ten-part series - which will be filmed in Belfast - has a simple enough premise: if you touch a prize, you win it. However, nothing is that easy and contestants will have to negotiate a huge assault course while battling it out to touch the prizes.
BBC One has also ordered a new series called Five Star Family Reunion, in which long lost families have to work together to be reunited in a five star location.
Elsewhere, Shane Richie's quiz show Win Your Wish List will return for eight more episodes in 2016, while Nick Knowles's programme Who Dares Wins has won an eight-episode order - including a Eurovision special. Dale Winton's In It to Win It will also be back for eight more episodes.

It's a pretty simple premise - a group of contestants compete but only the one who correctly answers the 21st Question has a chance at going through to win some big money.
When we weren't scowling at our inability to get a question right, we caught up with Gethin to find out 21 more things about him (including his weird celebrity crush!) and the show, which kicks off this afternoon...
1. The concept of the show is very simple - but there are lots of tactics!

Nick Knowles is definitely a fixture of the television schedules, and he's back for more with another series of his Saturday night show Break The Safe - which returns tomorrow. To mark its launch, we got on the phone with Nick for a natter about the many things he's got going on - from the future of Diy Sos to whether he really was approached about Strictly...
"I think people overlook the Saturday night stuff on BBC One because it's wrapped around the lottery. But you can tell a good show from a bad show, because a bad one will get about 2m, and a good one will do several million more than that. We know lots of people watched Break The Safe last time and enjoyed it, so I'm very pleased to get a second go at it. I think sometimes also people think these things are made up...

Across the land, minor celebrities are downing vitamin pills and drinking lots of milk. With shards of famous bones scattered across the Alps after the carnage of The Jump, Gemma Collins's bruised breasts implanted in our memory forever after Splash!, and Davina gingerly putting herself back together after her heroic trek for Sport Relief, everyone needs to make sure they're in tip-top condition before their agents call nervously about the next celebrity reality show.
But with these shows getting more and more dangerous - we're talking broken bones now - what on Earth will Sinitta and Mark Wright be putting themselves through next? Digital Spy has looked into its crystal ball to find out...

There's long been a hidden link between Hollyoaks and horror. Here are 10 actors who've made the jump from soap to gore...
Nb: This article contains spoilers.
There’s a moment in one of comedian Simon Amstell’s stand up shows where he recounts a conversation he once had with the executive producer of Channel 4 soap opera Hollyoaks. Trading on the commonly held opinion that Hollyoaks is “rubbish”, Amstell enquired as to why the producer didn’t try to make it better. The answer came that they did make it better, but people stopped watching.
Even by the not-so-great standards that soaps are measured, Hollyoaks has always been firmly towards the bottom of the ladder. The fictional Chester suburb where the majority of inhabitants are extraordinarily good looking but also extraordinarily stupid has been identified by its often wildly outlandish storylines and impossibly pretty people.

Nick Knowles has revealed that he would like to pursue an acting career.
The Diy Sos presenter worked as an actor before becoming a news journalist and finding fame, Pa reports.
He explained: "Many, many years ago, before I became a news journalist, I did some acting and quite recently, I've been thinking I'd quite like to play a part in something like Ripper Street or Luther."
Knowles added that returning to writing has encouraged him to consider acting roles.
"I'd like to play some kind of psychotic villain - especially now I'm writing film, I'd quite like to have a go at being in one," he added.
The 50-year-old also praised Diy Sos for its positive representation of the working class.
He said: "It represents working-class people in this country in a good light, people who are working class and making a living.

A 69-year-old grandmother and "retired dogsbody" has appeared on three BBC quiz shows in two weeks. However, Pat Barker's trio of gameshow appearances did not prove fruitful and she failed to win a single prize. Her first cameo was on hit Alexander Armstrong daytime quiz Pointless, on which she appeared with her son. The pair lost in the final round. She later starred on Mastermind, with the specialist subject of EastEnders, and Nick Knowles BBC Two series Perfection. She lost on both shows. Speaking about her glut of TV quiz show appearances, Barker (more)...

Helena Bonham Carter wore extensions cut from a long-haired extra on the set of her Oscar-winning 1985 movie A Room With A View.
The British actress was just 19 years old when she starred in the film, based on E. M. Forster's novel of the same name, alongside Dame Maggie Smith, and it has now been revealed the long locks she sported for the movie came from an uncredited actor on set.
The extra, Nick Knowles, who went on to become a TV presenter in his native Britain, tells the U.K.'s Daily Express, "The first thing I ever did on screen was as an extra on A Room With A View and I had several scenes with Dame Maggie Smith and Denholm Elliott. And Helena Bonham Carter ended up wearing my hair.
"I was in a rock band at the time and had to have my really long hair cut for the film. A guy came up and said, 'I'll give you £50 for your hair as I need to put hair extensions on Helena'. So my hair helped win the Oscars!"
The film won three Academy Awards, for Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Nick Knowles has claimed that BBC bosses "hated" Diy Sos when they watched its first series. The TV host, who has fronted the show since 1999, told This Morning that the corporation's chiefs were reluctant to broadcast the programme after seeing its six-episode debut run. Speaking of Sos's early days, Knowles explained: "We first started 11 years ago and I had a chat with the boys and I said, 'We're not going to get another series out of this'. I'd worked on building sites [so] I said, 'Let's just do (more)...

Nick Knowles has turned down a presenting job on 'The One Show'. The Diy expert has vowed not to replace Adrian Chiles on the weekday magazine-style show because it would mean relocating to London, from where he would struggle to give his current programmes enough time and attention. The 47-year-old star - who has previously guest-presented the show - said: ''There was a conversation about whether I would or wouldn't take the job. ''No, that job is not my cup of tea. I'd have to be stuck every day all year in London just doing that show which would mean I couldn't do ..

Nick Knowles has ruled himself out of the race to secure Adrian Chiles's old job on The One Show. The Diy Sos host confirmed that he had been approached over the possibility of fronting the early evening programme, but told bosses that he was not interested because he is happy with his current BBC projects. Knowles is quoted by the Daily Express as saying: "There was a conversation about whether I would or wouldn't take the job. I have done the show a few times when Adrian has been away. "It's a great show and it's nice - it reminds me of [the] magazine programme Nationwide in the '70s when I was a kid. It has a regular feel to it, some great reporters and I think they've (more)...

Who to invite to your red-carpet film premiere? They need to be: a) really famous, b) likely to wear something stupid, or c) given to starting fights
It's not often you'll find Simon Pegg, Joe Calzaghe, the Saturdays, Leigh Francis, James Blunt and Brian May sipping champagne and nibbling mini-burgers together, but then, wouldn't you expect the world premiere for Avatar to be one of the weirder events of all time? If you've ever organised a wedding or any other highly fraught, rivalry-entrenched family grudge match you'll have a tiny inkling of the dark art of compiling a film premiere guestlist.
True, attendees may vary in quality; the Cristal combo of Brad and Angelina which lit up last year's Inglourious Basterds UK launch was not matched by the Cava set (Danny Dyer, Bianca Gascoigne, Blue's fourth most fancied member Anthony Costa, and Celeb Big Brother loser Lady Sovereign) who...
