Showtime has announced “The Lincoln Project,” a forthcoming documentary following the members of the super Pac amid the 2020 election and after.
Directed by Fisher Stevens (“Dirty Money”) and Karim Amer (“The Vow”), the five-part docuseries explores how the Lincoln Project, the fastest-growing super Pac in America made up of a veteran group of former GOP operatives and strategists, accepted the duty of “saving democracy” in their plot to defeat their own party’s sitting president.
“Celebrated for their scathing ads and biting social media commentary, the series discovers that their operation is a lot more than what meets the eye, with sophisticated data analytics and voter targeting operations churning away behind the scenes,” reads the series’ logline. “While working to accomplish their stated goal of ‘defeating Trumpism,’ the group is shaken by internal upheaval, a sexual harassment scandal and a tidal wave of negative press. As one fight ends, another...

It will follow the group of former Republican operatives and strategists who made it their mission to defeat their party’s sitting president, Donald Trump, in the 2020 election.
“There has never been a super Pac that has captured the imagination of the general public like The Lincoln Project. They showed us that you could use storytelling and the power of the internet to punch back, and that you could fight a bully by bringing the fight right to their doorstep,” Stevens and Amer said in a statement. “Like the best verité documentary journeys, we had no idea where this story would take us,...

The 1960s were a time of cultural upheaval for society in general, but also within the Roman Catholic Church.
The Vatican II Council, which ran from 1962-1965, enacted liberalizing reforms intended to connect the church much more closely with the contemporary world the faithful were living in. The sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary order in Los Angeles took that message and ran with it—a story told in the Discovery+ documentary Rebel Hearts.
Some Ihm nuns participated in anti-Vietnam War and civil rights demonstrations. One sister, Corita Kent, became a renowned artist who depicted elements of the faith in novel ways. The order, which was made up of highly educated women, also questioned whether in the 1960s it was still necessary to wear a nun’s habit more appropriate to the Middle Ages.
“I think, to them, they were following their true calling. They were following the edicts of the Second Vatican Council,...

The International Documentary Association came out with its shortlist of the year’s best documentaries today, a list as notable for what was left out as what made it in.
A total of 29 feature films earned a spot on the IDA shortlist, including some considered Oscar frontrunners: Summer of Soul, Ascension, and Flee—each of which earned nominations last week for both the Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards and the Gotham Awards. But several other films making a strong bid for Oscar attention were snubbed, among them The Rescue, Becoming Cousteau, Attica, Procession, and My Name Is Pauli Murray.
The IDA gave recognition to several documentaries with an international dimension, like Faya Dayi, from Mexican-Ethiopian director Jessica Bashir, Chinese-born filmmaker Nanfu Wang’s Covid-19-related doc In The Same Breath, and Miguel’s War, the story of a gay Lebanese man who exiles himself to Spain. The IDA-shortlisted President focuses on...

Rebel Hearts centers on a trailblazing group of nuns in 1960s Los Angeles who stood up to the patriarchy of the Catholic Church. The sisters that ran the progressive Immaculate Heart College in L.A. fought for equality (they marched in Selma), their livelihoods and their own freedom against an all-powerful Cardinal who opposed their actions. Their acts of faith, defiance and activism turned the church upside down. The pic uses archival footage, animation and two decades of never-before-seen interviews gathered by the film’s producer Shawnee Isaac-Smith to tell the tale at the center of the film, a co-production...
