Mark Kozelek, the singer-songwriter behind Sun Kil Moon and Red House Painters, has been accused of sexual misconduct by seven more women, Pitchfork reports. The accusations follow an earlier Pitchfork report from last summer that detailed Kozelek exposing himself without permission and pressuring women into sex.
The original report from August 2020 detailed accusations from two women, Sarah Catherine Golden and “Andrea” (who requested a pseudonym), that outlined alleged nonconsensual behavior from Kozelek. Golden, a mental health specialist based in Los Angeles and a Sun Kil Moon fan, described meeting Kozelek...

Singers and songwriters often find themselves working in the land of producing, as well. It worked that way for Mark Kozelek, who is known for his indie-folk work in the music business. He’s part of the Sun Kil Moon act, as well as part of the Red House Painters. He’s recorded many albums, worked with many artists, and he’s well-known across the globe as a talented artist. However, there are many things about the artist we simply don’t know. Even his biggest fans aren’t aware of everything about the artist and his life so far. 1. He’s From Ohio If

Room 104‘s final check-out may be looming, but fans of the mind-bending, surrealist series have a lot of surprises in store before its door is locked for good.
On board to tell its stories this season are Dave Bautista, Melissa Fumero, Harvey Guillen, Kevin Nealon, Ron Funches and Shannon Purser, among others, with each episode unfolding with a revolving door of moods and genres. A woman battles a deep addiction, time travel throws the room for a loop, and in the case of the premiere — starring the show’s co-creator, writer and director Mark Duplass — an estranged musician gives a...

The 1975 scored two 2019 Brit Awards, British Group and the highest honor of Album of the Year for A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships, on Wednesday. Singer Matty Healy said they were “humbled” when winning the latter, but it was during their acceptance speech for British Group where he addressed a current music hot topic in the wake of the Ryan Adams sexual misconduct allegations.
After giving thanks for the award, he quoted The Guardian‘s Laura Snapes, who wrote a riveting essay that addressed pervasive misogyny in the music industry.

Donny McCaslin’s career will forever be divided into two distinct eras: before Blackstar and after. David Bowie famously recruited the jazz saxophonist and his band after catching them at New York’s 55 Bar in 2014, and they would end up backing the icon throughout his final album. Though McCaslin already had about three decades of professional experience up to that point, for many listeners, he registered as an emerging star.

Bob Dylan’s 77th birthday was celebrated with a kinetic reimagining of his 1963 solo concert at New York’s Town Hall. Titled Tomorrow Is A Long Time, the May 24 event produced by Hal Willner featured a slew of talented guests — among them: contemporary performers like The Milk Carton Kids, Emily Haines and Teddy Thompson, 60’s survivors like Geoff Muldaur and Bob Neuwirth, poetess Anne Waldman and savvy stage performers like Gina Gershon, Steve Buscemi and Bill Murray — and followed the original concert’s set list, providing ardent, idiosyncratic musical settings for Dylan’s songs with barely a hint of nostalgia. Musical Director Steven Bernstein and the Town Hall Ensemble led the tribute, which was filled with humor, social commentary and an impressive range of musical styles.
While Dylan’s original concert was a solo acoustic affair, the brawny Town Hall Ensemble contained a number of amazing musicians including bandleader Bernstein on trumpet,...

From the family tree of Red House Painters/Mark Kozelek -- one of my favorite artists -- comes the fifth Desertshore album, Arc of an Arrow Blind (Darkan Records). This is a wonderfully engaging instrumental album of sublime depth and beauty. Think of a more textured Red House Painters or Sun Kil Moon with arpeggiated guitars and piano/keyboard riffs with the bass and drums anchoring the proceedings in various rhythmic rock, jazz and even hypnotic world beat patterns. (Check out "Descend Like The Sun.")
Recorded in just 4 days with the core trio of former Red House Painters guitiarist Phil Carney, classically trained pianist Chris Connolly and drummer Mike Wells. The album also features Benjamin Powell on violin and Erik Kertes on bass. Ben is a gypsy jazz enthusiast, La session cat and has collaborated with jazz giant Peter Erskin and Gonzalo Beraga. Erik is a young La session player and touring musician.

This is where I'm supposed to summarize the past year, find some overaching theme or thread running through my choices, spot trends, or something along those lines. Instead it's just another mea culpa for my continuing and accelerating estrangement from mainstream pop music. Don't mind me, I'm just a grumpy old fart. But these twenty new albums made me less grumpy.
1. Diiv: Is the Is Are (Captured Tracks)
I enjoyed their first album, and far from a sophomore slump, their second is even better. Sure, I'm heavily predisposed to love bands that conjure a moody '80s vibe with thrumming bass, chiming guitar jangle, and submerged vocals, but this is greater than the sum of those parts, simultaneously updating the sound while tapping into a new level of melodicism for this band.
2. David Bowie: Black Star (Sony)

Hey, music fans and friends, it's time once again to share my favorite music from 2015.
The songs on my year-end list are not what I consider true "singles" but rather my favorite 25 songs from 2015. I've not heard all the amazing music released this past year, but I do consume a healthy dose of tunes every single day. Below are 13 of those songs with Youtube links if you can't access my Spotify list. Let's proceed, shall we?
1. "Chateau Lobby #4 (in C for Two Virgins)" - Father John Misty - I Love You Honeybear
Former Fleet Foxes drummer Josh Tillman has quickly become my favorite young singer-songwriter. His detail to imagery in both audio and album artwork have very few peers, too. (See image above.)
2. "Rose Mary y Yo" - Carlos Timón - Solar Rapé
Some have said, me included, that this music spins like a Spanish version of Belle & Sebastian meets Jobim!

"Ingenue" Atoms for Peace Amok (Xl Recordings)
Thom Yorke, Flea, long time Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, session drummer Joey Waronker, and percussionist Mauro Refosco have conjured up some heady experimental rock and electronica juju on this album of Radiohead-like alt-dance and fragmented rock tunes. Much of what I hear on this album had its roots in Radiohead's Amnesiac -- vague lyrics, off-kilter rhythms, Yorke's falsetto vocal phrases. Get your groove on, like Thom does in the video on the next page...
The Mavericks In Time (Valory)
Raul Malo has a voice as angelic as Roy Orbison's. He and his country-leaning Mavs -- original bassist Robert Reynolds and drummer Paul Deakin, along with the more recent guitarist Eddie Perez -- have regrouped and released their first new music in ten years, entitled In Time, including tunes co-written by former Nrbq badass Al Anderson. Wasn't easy to whittle this list down to 10, let alone 11, so I picked 12 for 12-12-12. A few of these selections were last minute additions that knocked two other picks out of top spots. Moreover, I decided to include twelve more picks at the end of my selections to show what else was being considered.
Nada Surf The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy (Barsuk)
I've not seen this album on any critics' year-end lists (aside from my managing editor Steve's list, obviously). Not sure why, because Nada Surf released a timeless collection of alt pop-rock songs. This is songwriting 101 -- verse, chorus, verse, bridge. If there is a better pop-rock band in America, let me know. Twenty years in and no sign of lazy rock star bullshit, just plenty of great chiming guitar riffs and hooky-as-hell tunes. Album of the year.

"Radiator Sister" - The Mynabirds Generals (Saddle Creek) - Infectious, bubble-gum snappin' tunes abound on this sophomore long player from singer-songwriter Laura Burhenn. The first time someone showed me Mark Kozelek’s tunes, it was like an audio orgasm. The friend told me, “If you want to seduce someone, put on Sun Kil Moon.” And for the earlier stuff, this is definitely true. Not that I’ve tried. But I have regarded Skm’s Tiny Cities as a standby bachelorette party gift for girlfriends for whom I don’t feel comfortable buying lingerie. However, with the release of Among the Leaves, I feel that quality has evaporated. The album deals with frustration, aging and frustration about aging. Also, he seems to hate the millennial generation. It’s beautiful,...

I've already gone over the best of 2011, and periodically rounded up rock and pop releases as the year went along, yet there were many more albums that came out last year that I also meant to review but didn't get around to then, for one reason or another. Here are a few of them.
Pink Floyd: Wish You Were Here Experience edition (Capitol)
Last time I did a review roundup, I dissed the Dark Side of the Moon two-cd remaster's second disc. I'm happy to report that this one's a lot more interesting.
Three extended tracks from a 1974 Wembley concert open it. The concert version of "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" predates the studio version and is significantly different from it in both arrangement and improvisation. It's Parts 1-6, so that's a good 20 minutes right off the bat. "Raving and Drooling" and "You've Got to Be Crazy" are very...

Guitarist Phil Carney has played alongside Mark Kozelek off and on since the latter’s Red House Painters days, so there’s nothing that unusual about Kozelek sitting in with Carney’s band Desertshore for its second album, Drawing Of Threes. Except that Kozelek does more than just sit in; he sings and plays bass on the first six of the album’s 10 tracks. The remaining songs are all instrumentals—just like all the songs on Desertshore’s 2010 debut album, Drifting Your Majesty—but since Carney and his co-founder/pianist Chris Connolly favor dreamy soft-rock, halfway between Windham ...

Mark Oliver Everett, better known as the driving force of the band Eels, is nothing if not ambitious. After releasing a trilogy of albums in 2009-2010 ("Hombre Lobo", "End Times", and "Tomorrow Morning" for those keeping track), he has just announced a world tour that leaves no far-flung corner untrodden. Fans from China to Toronto to Austin will be able to watch live as Eels performs their uniquely darkly beautiful songs that are evocative of Tom Waits, Mark Kozelek, and Elliott Smith. The tour kicks off June 1st in California and then heads to the Far East with shows in Beijing and Shanghai. Next stop is Europe with Eels' first appearance at the Glastonbury Festival. Then they kick off their North American tour with dates spanning from sea to shining sea. While a tour is gift enough for the devoted Eels fans across the globe, in the words of the...

Beautiful rambling For Mark Kozelek, old ghosts die hard. The man behind Sun Kil Moon has always had a complicated relationship with the specters of his past, and on Admiral Fell Promises, he once again mines his memory and crafts an ode to lost loves, death and listlessness. Kozelek is an adept storyteller, always toeing the thin emotional line between hope and hopelessness; even at his brightest, a lingering sadness surrounds him like relentless fog. Admiral’s melodies—most notably on the title track and “Alesund”—are heavy and gorgeous, heart-breaking and breathtaking. Still, they’re marred by Kozelek’s indulgence in instrumental meandering—while it...

Mark Kozelek has long operated under the guise of band names—first Red House Painters, more recently Sun Kil Moon—but even when backed by other musicians, he always sounds like a man alone. On Admiral Fell Promises, his fourth album under the Sun Kil Moon moniker, Kozelek is literally alone, accompanied only by his own nylon-string guitar on 10 starkly unadorned songs. The limited medium ends up being the message on Admiral, which announces itself as a concept album of sorts with the opening lines of “Alesund”: “No, this is not my guitar, I’m bringing it to a ...

Covers albums that work fall into two camps: radical reinventions and enjoyable detours. Examples of the former: Mark Kozelek’s AC/DC excursion What’s Next To The Moon and Grant Lee Phillips’ nineteeneighties. Examples of the latter: David Bowie’s Pin Ups, Yo La Tengo’s Condo Fucks side project, and The Hotrats’ Turn Ons, a new album from Gaz Coombes and Danny Goffe, a.k.a. half of Supergrass. Brandi Carlile inspired this list. I’ve been listening to her fantastic new record nonstop lately—mainly because I’m addicted to her voice. Blue Foundation is a project Tobias originally started up with his brother. With the help of friends Kirstine Stubbe Teglbjaerg (vocalist for "Eyes on Fire") and Tatsuki Oshima for the first album, Tobias has found inspiration in enlisting assistance from various favorite musicians in his additional two records. The underground song, “Eyes on Fire,” was an unlikely overnight success and has, to date, garnered nearly nine million hits on their MySpace page. Tobias gave me some intimate information about the origination of "Eyes on Fire," revealing that it was not written for the soundtrack, rather has more humble beginnings: It really seems like the song was written for the movie, but it had not. It was written a year before in a cold, dark December night in Copenhagen in a very old and trashy house where I used to have my studio by Kirstine and me. I think the music and lyrics speak for itself,...

Red House Painters released an excellent two-disc retrospective in 1999, and Mark Kozelek has kept his Caldo Verde imprint busy with repackaged and reissued solo and Sun Kil Moon material, but for the most part, he's a compilation newbie. That might explain why The Finally LP—a 10-song collection that's mostly covers—feels a little thin and unnecessary. Or maybe Kozelek is just being a shrewd businessman, and he plans to roll out one of these every year just in time for the holidays. Whatever the case, there are some great Kozelek covers and comp contributions floating out there that are missing from this half-hour disc, which still manages to finagle a whole lot of beauty out of the brevity. Bookended by a pair of original instrumentals, including Kozelek's five-minute soundtrack to the short film "Gaping Mouth," The Finally LP is a solo-acoustic affair, with its name coming from a...
