At long last, Amazon has lifted the curtain on “Them: Covenant,” the upcoming first season of Little Marvin’s highly-anticipated horror anthology series.
Per Amazon, “Them” is a limited anthology series that explores terror in America. The first season, subtitled “Covenant,” centers on a Black family in the 1950s who moves from North Carolina to an all-white Los Angeles neighborhood during the period known as The Great Migration. The family’s idyllic home becomes ground zero where malevolent forces — next-door and otherworldly — threaten to taunt, ravage and destroy them.
In IndieWire’s review of the first two episodes, Elliott Smith wrote: “While many view the West with rose-tinted sunglasses, “Them” shows how the corrosive effects of racism were in full rot even in the City of Angels. As soon as the Emory family pulls into the driveway of its new home, their new white neighbors are out in full force to protest,...

Justified, Season 6, Episode 9: “Burned”
Written by Dave Andron, Leonard Chang and Jenny DeArmitt
Directed by Don Kurt
Airs Tuesdays at 10pm Et on FX
In its final season, Justified is attempting to pull off something even trickier than Boyd’s heist: honor its past without simply repeating itself. “Burned” contains echoes from the show’s entire history to date, some subtler than others, but more importantly, it manages to incorporate these elements to support a thoroughly entertaining episode, rather than letting the thematic currents overwhelm the narrative, as with some of last week’s “Dark as a Dungeon.”
“Burned” is a somewhat unexpected showcase for two players with a long, complex history on the series: Wynn Duffy and Loretta McCready. Duffy’s journey on the series has been a strange one: when Jere Burns’ mustachioed hood made his first appearance back in the first season, he was the wildest,...

Few shows have kept themselves fresh, while having to reinvent themselves with every season, and kept their audiences so engrossed, the way FX‘s Justified has managed. While the main cast has stayed the same, the necessities of managing to win out in the end has meant that characters have to come and go. When you have to keep things realistic, and quickly build a solid tension that makes sense to the overall structure, shuffling people in and out isn’t as easy as it might seem.
Last season, Michael Rappaport proved just how adept the writers are, and how committed the show is to getting the right people involved.
Having a wide range of talent held together by Timothy Olyphant and Walton Goggins, makes for a great starting point, but with the kind of multi-episode (or whole season) arcs the show needs, the additions are crucial to keeping the show going.

Joelle Carter is still a key part of "Justified," but the way Season 5 has been structured, it's almost like she's part of another show.
Her character, Ava Crowder, has spent the entire season in lockup -- first a county jail, then a state prison -- after being arrested for the murder of Delroy Baker (which happened back in the third season). Aside from occasional interaction with her fiance, Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins), she's been cut off from the rest of the regular characters. Carter misses her co-stars, but she says getting to be front and center in her own story has been "wonderful."
"I feel honored that they gave me my own storyline -- they don't do that a lot," Carter tells Zap2it. "They said they had complete faith in me, and they were glad they did. So I'm happy everyone's happy. In the beginning I wasn't sure what...

Justified, Season 5, Episode 6: “Kill the Messenger”
Written by Ingrid Escajeda

Airs Tuesdays at 10pm Et -
Thank goodness; “Shot All To Hell” appears not to have been a fluke, and Season 5 is finally, officially, cooking with oil. “Kill the Messenger,” while not bucking the trend of Justified‘s almost uselessly arbitrary episode titling, follows up on last week’s deck-clearing smorgasbord of goodness in kind, fleshing out the Crowe family dynamic with some of the season’s most effective comedic beats and even managing to unite a host of seemingly disparate plot threads. In other words: vintage Justified.
It took six episodes, but we finally have the Ava Crowder Prison Drama we were all pretty openly clamoring for. Ava’s arrival in the state pen ushers in absolutely no Orange is the New Black-style antics, only grim portent and the upsetting, but crucial development...

Is there a contest in the Justified writers' room to see who can pack the most plot into an episode? Season five makes it seem as though there is; it's just one damn thing after another after another, the upside of which is there's never a dull moment; the downside being that it sometimes feels like motion for motion's sake. Last night's episode, "Kill the Messenger" — which was written by Ingrid Escejeda and directed by series coproducer Don Kurt — was busy, busy, busy. We saw Boyd try to protect Ava against prison violence by hiring protection from the incarcerated sister of a former white supremacist buddy, Gunnar Swift. Turns out Gunnar took Boyd's money and let his imprisoned sister Gretchen humiliate Ava as long-delayed payback for the former white supremacist Boyd becoming a "race traitor." We saw Dewey and Danny Crowe move against Boyd, then kidnap and torture one...

Spoiler alert! If you haven’t watched this week’s episode of Justified, “Kill the Messenger” written by Ingrid Escajeda and directed by Don Kurt, stop reading now. As he’ll do throughout the season, showrunner Graham Yost takes us inside the writers room.
Entertainment Weekly: Let’s start with that opening shot of Raylan coming into the bar, through the rain and in shadow, to meet Art. It was such a cool shot, I rewound.
Graham Yost: Don came up with the idea. We had scripted this scene where essentially nothing is said and Art punches him, and...

Justified, Season 4, Episode 7: “Money Trap”
Written by Chris Provenzano
Directed by Don Kurt
Airs Tuesdays at 10pm Et on FX
With its colorful-but-inept villlainry, reams of gunplay, and swift pacing, “Money Trap” surprises by feeling more like a throwback to Justified‘s first season than perhaps any since Mags Bennett cast an ominous cloud over the Season 2 premiere. That’s not necessarily a bad thing - Justified had a strong first season – but it does feel a little strange for a show that’s made a point of evolving from season to season.
With only the smallest of plot movements on the Drew Thompson front, “Money Trap” hones back in more specifically on Raylan, Boyd, and Ava after last week’s more diffuse, ensemble-heavy outing. We open on a flashback to six days ago, after Raylan hands off fugitive Jody Adair (Chris Chalk) to his bail-bondsman pal (and onetime lover) Sharon Edmunds.

Spoiler alert! If you haven’t watched this week’s episode of Justified, stop reading now. Borrowing from Elmore Leonard’s novel Raylan, the episode, “Money Trap,” was written by Chris Provenzano and directed by Don Kurt, and featured the return of bail jumper Jody Adair (Chris Chalk) and the introduction of Jackie Nevada (The Secret Circle’s Shelley Hennig, making a nice career move). Oh, and there was the swingers party, which ended badly for Boyd — and Walton Goggins, it turns out. As he’ll do throughout the season, showrunner Graham Yost takes us inside the writers room.

A stuntwoman who says she was injured on the set of Justified during a late night shoot in 2011 today sued Sony Pictures and various individuals connected with the FX series. Citing “severe and permanent physical and mental injuries,” Lisa Hoyle and her husband Robert Jakubik have filed a suit (read it here) for Negligence, Premises Liability and Loss of Consortium for injuries the Stuntchicks employee suffered during a car crash stunt on February 3, 2011 at Santa Clarita Studios. While Hoyle and her husband don’t specify any dollar amount in their complaint, they are certainly looking for more than loose change. The nine-page filing seeks general damages “in an amount to be proven at trial” as well as loss of earnings, loss of earning capacity, legal fees, “medical and related expenses” and “other and further general and special damages in a sum according to proof at the time of trial” and...

Spoiler Alert! FX’s Justified has returned, and with it, our weekly postmortems with showrunner Graham Yost, who’ll once again take us inside the writers room. He penned the season 4 premiere, “Hole in the Wall,” which introduced a season-long mystery somehow involving Arlo (Raymond J. Barry); Patton Oswalt’s recurring character, Constable Bob Sweeney, who proved a help to Raylan (Timothy Olyphant); and a snake-handling preacher (Joe Mazzello), who’s already hurting Boyd’s (Walton Goggins) revenue. Bonus: it also included a reference to Yost’s Speed screenplay (did you catch it?).

Spoiler Alert! This week’s episode of Justified, “Loose Ends,” written by Ingrid Escajeda and directed by Gwyneth Horder-Payton, found Raylan (Timothy Olyphant) asking Limehouse (Mykelti Williamson) to team up with him to take down Quarles (Neal McDonough) to no avail, Boyd (Walton Goggins) winning the debate between the candidates for sheriff, and Ava (Joelle Carter) putting a bullet in pimp Delroy (William Mapother) to save junkie prostitute Ellen May (Abby Miller) and deciding to become the girls’ new madam. As we’ll be doing each week throughout the season, we asked executive producer Graham Yost to take us inside the writers room.

Justified, Season 3, Episode 6: “When the Guns Come Out”
Written by Nichelle Tramble Spellman and Dave Andron
Directed by Don Kurt
Airs Tuesdays at 10pm Et on FX
I’m out adventuring in Chicago this week, so this week’s review is a little more curt than usual.
If Justified‘s second season had an agreed-upon nadir, it was pretty obviously the two-episode mini-arc involving a certain Winona Hawkins and the theft of some money from the county’s evidence locker. It was one of the few times on the show that it felt like drama had been artificially concocted rather than arising naturally from the characters and their conflicts. So when “When the Guns Come Out” opens with an unexpected callback to that plot, it’s a little surprising – are they really going back down this well? Thankfully, with the revelation that the guard is the one responsible for...

Spoiler Alert! This week’s episode of Justified, written by Nichelle Tramble Spellman and Dave Andron and directed by Don Kurt, raised Raylan’s stress level, the tension between Boyd and Quarles, and the season’s body count. As we’ll be doing each week throughout the season, we asked exec producer Graham Yost to take us inside the writers room.
Entertainment Weekly: After the season premiere, you said that we should remember Winona getting pulled over by a Kentucky State Trooper after Raylan was shot. We found out she was leaving him then. How do you think fans will feel about that revelation?...
