David E. Diano, a veteran camera operator with credits including Tombstone, The Fast and the Furious, Wedding Crashers and Spider-Man 3, has died. He was 71.
Diano died Jan. 22 at Huntington Hospital in Pasadena of coronary issues after a battle with prostate cancer, his wife, still photographer Gemma Lamana, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Diano served as president of the Society of Camera Operators from 2003-04 before deciding not to run for a second term.
“To write that David was a one-of-a-kind friend to those of us who worked with him would be an understatement,” Soc historical chair Michael Frediani said in a statement. “His kindness, artistry and boyish smile endeared him to countess friends and fellow industry colleagues — and that is what set him apart from many,”
Diano shot 17 movies for cinematographer William Fraker, a six-time Oscar nominee, from 1983-2002. Those films included War Games (1983), Murphy’s Romance (1985), Baby Boom (1987), Memoirs of an Invisible Man...

Paul Rudd became popular thanks to a succession of iconic films like Clueless and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. These days, he isn’t just a star of comedies. He’s a bonafide action hero as well, and a member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Still, Rudd has never forgotten his roots, and the movies that helped to make him a star. In a recent interview, the actor discussed one of his earliest hits, the cult classic comedy Wet Hot American Summer, revealing why even making the movie was like being in summer camp.

Chicago – What do you see in the compilation image below?
Yes, it’s nine films based on books by romance novelist Nicholas Sparks. But look more closely.
“Message in a Bottle” opened his can of worms in 1999 and 2002’s “A Walk to Remember” could only say it was based on a best-selling novel. Then, after averaging one film every 1.6 years, they’ve all been riding on the breakout hit of 2004’s “The Notebook” with Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling.
The nine films based on Nicholas Sparks novels with the most recent in the upper left on the oldest in the lower right.

In fact, every single movie poster after “The Notebook” had to say it’s from the author of “The Notebook” or else it would have never seen the light of day. The blessing of having a hit later becomes your burden of trying to repeat it.

Ron Burgundy is back! Just as arrogant and charming as we remember. But Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues is strictly for fans alone. It will be completely unappreciated by anyone that does not get the epic nuances of the masterful Will Ferrell.
The storyline is based in the early 1980s and the beginning of the currently popular twenty-four-hours-a-day-news trend. The first station to offer this is called Gnn, a play on CNN. Ron Burgundy played by Will Ferrell is sure not to disappoint his fans. He is of course joined with his all-star winning news team Paul Rudd as Brian Fantana, Steve Carell as Brick Tamland, and David Koechner as Champ Kind. Together they are still as silly as we remember. Brick has a new love interest that is just perfect for him. Champ has started his own restaurant featuring fried bats, Fantana is a prominent photographer of cats and...

Paul Rudd, Jennifer Aniston, Wanderlust The Lorax to Become 2012's Biggest Early Hit At no. 2 on Friday, March 2, the R-rated comedy Project X collected $8.17 million in North America according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. That includes $1.15 million from Thursday midnight screenings. Produced by The Hangover's Todd Phillips and directed by feature-film first-timer Nima Nourizadeh, Project X features Thomas Mann, Oliver Cooper, and Jonathan Daniel Brown. Revolving around found video footage and a "wild party," Project X was made for a reported $12 million. Reviewers apparently didn't find Nourizadeh's film wild enough, as its approval rating among Rotten Tomatoes' top critics is a dismal 26%. At no. 3, last week's no. 1 movie, Mike McCoy and Scott Waugh's Act of Valor, brought in $3.8 million, plummeting 58%. Variety had estimated the flag-waving actioner would take in $13-$14 million over the weekend, but Friday grosses indicate something closer to $11-$12 million — or less.

Paul Rudd, Jennifer Aniston, Wanderlust It's Oscar weekend. So, what are the top movies at the North American box office? The Artist? The Descendants? Hugo? Try Act of Valor, featuring (as per the film's publicity) actual Navy SEALs in a story of red-white-and-blue honor and valor and all that good stuff that unpatriotic film critics have given a putrid 19% approval rating at Rotten Tomatoes (top critics). Directed by Mike McCoy and Scott Waugh, Act of Valor is expected to gross $27 million over the weekend — following $9.4 million at 3,039 locations on Friday — according to early, rough estimates found at Deadline.com. As per Deadline, Relativity acquired the film for $13 million, in addition to committing itself to spending $30 million in marketing and distribution. So, for a $43 million investment, $27 million in three days isn't bad at all. (At Box Office Mojo, Ray Subers had been expecting a $20.5 million opening.) But it isn't great, either,...

Cameron Diaz, Jason Segel, Justin Timberlake, Bad Teacher Cars 2 Trails Cars (Taking Inflation into Account): Box Office Starring Cameron Diaz, Justin Timberlake, Jason Segel, and Lucy Punch, Jake Kasdan's R-rated Bad Teacher landed on the no. 2 spot at the North American box office this weekend (June 24-26) according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. A Sony release, Bad Teacher grossed an estimated $31 million at 3,049 locations, averaging a solid $10,167 per theater. Critics, however, weren't exactly impressed with the movie's foul-mouthed shenanigans: Bad Teacher has a paltry 28% approval rating among Rotten Tomatoes' top critics. Overseas, Bad Teacher collected $6.2m in Germany and a total of $18.3m in 24 markets. Bad Teacher cost a reported $19m. At the domestic box office, Bad Teacher boasted the third-highest opening for a Cameron Diaz vehicle*, trailing only the two Charlie's Angels movies: Charlie's Angels took in $40.12m in 2000; Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle...

Chicago – If you’re going to be bad, be bad. But this is mainstream Hollywood “product,” starring Cameron Diaz, and while the concept of the new film “Bad Teacher” had promise, it eventually fell down on the weight of happy resolutions and the worse mortal sin for a comedy…it was dull.

Director Jake Kasdan, who has been much more interesting in previous films (”Zero Effect,” “Orange County,” “The TV Set”) gets bogged down with a passive aggressive script, by Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg, and wastes a pretty talented comic cast. The ensemble gamely tries to deliver some wooden material and despite some individual moments, can’t deliver the overall goodness of the “badness.”

Cameron Diaz, Bad Teacher If early, rough estimates found at Deadline.com are correct, Cars 2 is performing way — but way — above expectations. As per those early Friday estimates, the latest Disney/Pixar animated movie — and the first one to take some serious critical drubbing — grossed $28m at 4,115 locations and is expected to reach from $68m (as per Disney) to $75m (as per several Deadline sources) for the weekend. Most pundits and Disney itself had been predicting grosses in the $50m-$60m range. Surely, inflated 3D ticket prices are helping Cars 2 — though how much remains to be seen. Of late, 3D houses have been losing ground in terms of both revenues and number of tickets sold. Chiefly thanks to the performance of Cars 2, North American box-office revenues are supposed to be up 40% compared to last year, when Toy Story 3 earned $59m on its second weekend out, Adam Sandler...

As "Bad Teacher" opens this weekend, it joins a mixed bag of summer comedies. While we're still giggling over certain "Bridesmaids" moments and can't wait to take in a second viewing on DVD, "The Hangover Part II" left us reaching for a copy of the original film to remind us why we were so taken with that boozy cinematic bunch. But hey, the second "Hangover" has grossed almost $500 million worldwide, so what the heck do we know?
The Cameron Diaz-starring laugher, according to the critics, falls closer to the letdown that was the second "Hangover" than the revelatory "Bridesmaids." Reviewers have criticized the film for plot holes galore and poor character development, even as most have admitted it delivers a hefty helping of laughs.

It's almost a Hollywood storytelling imperative: Make your main character likeable. Even if he or she starts off as the most loathsome of humans, be sure by the time the credits roll that your protagonist learns a lesson and reveals a more attractive personality.
Not so in "Bad Teacher," the June 24 comedy in which Cameron Diaz's couldn't-give-a-hoot educator — she routinely sleeps through class and lights up a joint afterward — remains largely unchanged. And it was the character's essentially static arc, Diaz told us recently, that attracted her to the movie, even if she initially thought she wanted nothing to do with it.

"The first 30 pages, I'm like, 'I am not playing this. There is no way I can play this character. There [are] no redeeming qualities to this character,...

Movie experts weigh in on why Ghostface didn't scare up impressive returns for the franchise.

Unlike Indiana Jones and John McClane, Ghostface has not aged particularly well. While Indy's franchise and McClane's "Die Hard" films took lengthy breaks from the multiplex and returned with impressive box-office debuts, "Scream 4" got off to a start that fell on the low end of projections.
The horror flick's $19.3 million debut on more than 4,400 screens was, in fact, a major fall from the previous installment in 2000, which Box Office Mojo points out was $52 million when adjusted for ticket-price inflation. While insiders were hardly expecting "Scream 4" to live up to the performance of the original trilogy, the movie nonetheless failed to widely reconnect with moviegoers.
So what happened? A combination of factors, according to industry experts, conspired to hold back...

For those of you who didn't make it to the theater over the weekend to see "Scream 4," stop reading now — we don't want to spoil anything! For everyone else, MTV News thought it would be fun to find out the cast's favorite death scenes in the new slasher pic, along with some technical insight from director Wes Craven.
And because there are so many gruesome offings from which to choose, the results of our little poll are all over the map, despite some persuasive campaigning by Anthony Anderson.
"I think the one that freaked me out the most, her name is Marielle in real life — Marielle's death," Emma Roberts said, choosing the bloody demise of Marielle Jaffe's character,...

And the killer is … yeah, right.
“Scream 4” is meta. That is, it is absolutely, characteristically, perfectly, fan-fulfillingly self-referential. Bringing back the original key cast members and combining them with teens who have already entered the pop-culture zeitgeist is a veritable lightning bolt, sure to attract fan boys and desirable viewing demographics.
The “Scream” franchise began with an overt awareness of the rules of the genre, and this installment of the franchise hypes the self-realization to hellish levels, accommodating one-liners to engage fans who climbed on board the franchise at its first stop as well as newbies coming to the scene late.

With all the secretiveness surrounding the plot details of the "Scream" movies, it's natural to assume that the general public goes into the films with as little knowledge as the studio can prevent them from acquiring. (Even journalists are asked to refrain from reviewing or commenting on the film until it opens.) But what about the actors? How much are they privy to when they sign on?
MTV News recently caught up with the "Scream 4" cast to find out first, why we should believe their characters are not the killer and second, how much of the script they get to read before they sign on.
"[I got] the middle bit, the middle section," Hayden Panettiere told us. "I was...

For the die-hard "Scream" fans out there, one of the many joys in watching the films for the first time is trying to figure out who the killer is. With the release of the fourth installment of the franchise just days away, rumors and speculation are running rampant across the interwebs.
To help you narrow down your list of potential killers, MTV News had the cast of "Scream 4" make a case for why you won't see their characters wielding any knives or wearing Ghostface masks come Friday.
"My character is not the killer, because she knows horror movies too well," Hayden Panettiere said of her spunky, know-it-all character Kirby Reed. "She knows how they work, and she's too terrified in that scene in the preview.
