Exclusive: The WGA East is honoring Tony Gilroy at the upcoming Writers Guild Awards with the Ian McLellan Hunter Award for Career Achievement.
With the award, which was established in 1992, the Andor creator will be following in the footsteps of his father Frank D. Gilroy, who was honored with the Hunter Award in 2011.
“Tony embodies the best of what it means to be a Writers Guild member. He is an extraordinary talent who has written some of the most thought-provoking and exciting screenplays of the last 30 years,” Lisa Takeuchi Cullen, President of the Writers Guild of America East, said in a statement. “He is also a staunch union ally, one of our most trusted voices when it comes to advocating for writers’ rights, and he gave one of the best damn speeches on the picket lines last summer. Spike Lee will be this year’s recipient of the WGA East’s Ian McLellan Hunter Award for Career Achievement.
The award, which will be presented March 5 at the 75th anniversary WGA Awards in New York City, is named after the famed writer who fronted for Dalton Trumbo and Ring Lardner Jr. during the Hollywood Blacklist before being blacklisted himself. In announcing Lee’s selection, the guild described him as “one of the greatest writer/directors in film history.”
“For nearly 40 years, Spike Lee has written and directed some of the most meaningful and creative films in cinema,” said WGA East President Michael Winship. “With a unique ability to challenge, entertain and inform, his narratives spotlight the racism and bigotry that too often have defined the Black experience in America.”

At Sunday’s WGA Awards, late-night host, comedian and writer Dick Cavett received the Evelyn F. Burkey Award, speaking in his acceptance speech about what writing means to him.
“Writing is one of the great bastions of civilizations. It’s a branch of the art that needs preserving,” he said in the pre-taped segment, “and I thought I’d try to get through this without using the word ‘honor,’ but this is an honor.”
The honoree, who hosted multiple iterations of The Dick Cavett Show over the course of almost two decades, also fondly recalled time spent with the innumerable literary icons that graced his show. “I have been lucky to spend time with some of the most colorful, wonderful people in this county and the world, and they were writers. Ms. Burkey, whose name is on this award, was a real character. She’s done millions of good things for writers,...

Franklin Leonard, founder and CEO of the Black List, will receive the WGA East’s Burkey Award, given in recognition of his contributions that have brought “honor and dignity to writers.” The award will be presented at 71st annual Writers Guild Awards in New York on Feb. 17.
“Since founding the Black List, Franklin has been one of the strongest advocates for writers in the entertainment industry,” said WGA East president Beau Willimon. “By giving a platform to new voices, stressing the necessity for diversity and championing the importance of the script, Franklin has become an invaluable ally to the Writers Guild of America, East. We are honored to celebrate his accomplishments and continued work.”
“I have always believed that the greatest honor of my career is serving the community of screenwriters,” Leonard said. “To have that same community believe that my service has been of value is frankly overwhelming.”

The Bold and the Beautiful recently added a furry new character, Harry, the son of the show's new stalker, Zoe, and her ex, Xander Avant. In his scenes so far, Harry has been played perfectly by (appropriately named) Purrfect, and I jokingly referred to him on Twitter as my favorite new soap opera character in ages.
It brought to mind the many random pets on soaps over the years, such as Todd Manning's parrot, a blue and gold macaw parrot named Moose, on One Life to Live; Daisy Cortlandt's cat, Bonkers, on All My Children; and Victor Newman's trusty Young and the Restless dog, Zapata, who discovered his owner after he had an epileptic seizure. Another World's Felicia Gallant had a number of dogs over the years, including Bibi, Daisy and Paris. The list goes on and on.
Legendary soap writer Claire Labine once said it seemed "natural" to see pets on soaps.

I'm not sure what to make of the big surprise on General Hospital this week -- but then again, I haven't known what to make of Gh in a very long time (years, actually). Robin Scorpio is alive -- and looking very tanned and rested, I might add, even if she is being held hostage in something resembling a hospital room.
Seeing Robin in that bed at the end of Monday's episode was the first time Gh has really "wowed" me since that unforgettable moment in May 1980 when Edward Quartermaine sprang back to life after faking a heart attack and shocked his daughter Tracy (and millions of viewers, as well) after she had refused to give him his medication because he wouldn't change his will. Ah, sweet memories ...
The Robin reveal was all the more impressive because it hadn't been leaked. I didn't think it was possible to keep anything...

Are There Big Bucks in Daytime Soaps?
By Isobel Silden
The Baltimore Sun

The names may not be blaring from the headlines of the movie magazines in the supermarkets, but the top soap opera actors are genuine stars with an adoring--or sometimes angry--public. And there are jealousies, salary disputes and ego problems. Here, in the last of a five-part series, is a look behind the scenes of the soaps.
Everyone involved with daytime TV, either as a performer or a viewer, has favorite cherished stories.
Helen Gallagher (Maeve on Ryan's Hope) says producer Claire Labine cherishes one specific letter. "It was from a girl who'd been raped. She wrote Helen that the aftermath with the police was so awful, she tried to think of the nicest thing she could. That was Maeve Ryan. Helen cries when she talks about it."
Still, all is not sweetness and light with every actor on every soap.

In 2009, legendary soap writer Claire Labine spoke with Damon L. Jacobs about her illustrious career in a fascinating seven-part interview. One of the topics was the memorable Robin and Stone AIDS storyline on General Hospital. Here is what she had to say.
The degree of ignorance of AIDS in that era was stunning! People really thought you could catch it by shaking hands. I did feel impassioned about that story. I got the fastest approval for that story ever. We were at a retreat with Pat [Fili-Krushel, head of ABC daytime from 1993-2000]. We were at breakfast and Wendy said, “What we really need is a Romeo and Juliet story.” And it just came to me: “Stone is HIV positive and he and Robin become lovers and she’s infected.” Pat looked at me and said, “Can you really make a story out of that?” And I said, “You bet we can.” And she said, “Approved!” And she let us do it!

Former WGA East leaders Chris Albers and Tom Fontana have been chosen to receive the Richard B. Jablow Award for devoted service to the guild. Albers served as president and Fontana as vp of the Wgae from 2005-07.
They will receive their honors at the 61st annual awards ceremony Feb. 7 at New York's Hudson Theatre.
