Co-chaired by Quinta Brunson and Bob Odenkirk, the annual event takes place ahead of the Emmy Awards, and this weekend’s installment shifted to the new year to follow the TV Academy’s celebration due to the dual strikes last summer.
“We’ve had quite a year, and this organization and its fundraiser has helped many weather the storm,” said Brunson. Added Odenkirk, “I’m thrilled to be a co-chair of MPTF’s Evening Before benefit with Quinta. MPTF really stepped up during a very challenging year to support the entertainment community, and I’m proud to be a part of a fundraiser that will help to sustain that vital support.

Tales of musicians who sold their soul for fame are common enough, Crossroads, Trick or Treat, Dark Roads 79 and The 27 Club are just a few examples. The Devil Went Down to Islington is a little different, however. It tells the tale of a music teacher who makes a Faustian bargain while drunk, only to panic when he realizes what he’s done.
It actually opens like a bizarre action film with Father Crowley using switchblade crosses to fight a pair of masked figures who are attacking a panicked man. He defeats them, but in the end Satan claims another soul.

Kola Bokinni, Billy Harris, Cristo Fernandez and James Lance bid a fond farewell to the show in Monaco. But is it truly good-bye? When asked about it, Harris replied: “We’re still pretty much together. We were in L.A. last week, and now we’re in Monte-Carlo. I suppose we’re enjoying the fruits of our labor.” Lance chimed in, saying: “The show may be over, but we’re just getting started, aren’t we? We’re still here, having a great time.”
When it comes to those hoping for a fourth season, Lance said: “There’s always hope.” His co-stars echoed together, “Believe,” the rallying cry that their manager, Ted Lasso, instilled in the team.

Having covered this business for a while, I’ve written several stories over the years about pilot and series recastings, and it always strikes me as one of the cruelest moments for anyone to experience in this business.
Imagine you’ve been given a role in a pilot: The exciting news appears in the trades, you film the episode and take the cast publicity photos. Then your show is picked up! But there’s a caveat: Your role is being re-shot with a new actor. Devastating! Cue sad trombone sound effect.
That’s why I like these kinds of stories better: The background actors, guest stars and recurring actors who eventually graduate to series regular status thanks to sheer persistence and talent. That’s the case this season for “Ted Lasso” standout James Lance, who plays Trent Crimm — formerly of The Independent, now just independent — on the show.

As the cast of Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso” gathered outside the Saban Media Center on Saturday night for their FYC event, audience members were greeted by handouts from several picketing writers of the WGA in front of the entrance.
But despite the ongoing picketing that’s halted several productions including new seasons of “Abbott Elementary” and “Yellowjackets,” stars Hannah Waddingham and Juno Temple reveal their upcoming projects haven’t been touched by the strike’s effects just yet.
Temple is set to star in “Venom 3,” which is rumored to be released October 2024, though Sony Pictures Entertainment hasn’t released an official release date as of yet. But the actress shares that she hasn’t started shooting on the film just yet but is scheduled to start “very, very soon, which I’m thrilled about.” Whereas, Waddingham’s role in “Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part Two” is already underway.

Rian Johnson‘s “Poker Face” has emerged as one of the most enjoyable new TV series of the last year as he returns to the murder-mystery genre with this episodic, case-of-the-week format that clearly delights those on-screen as much as it does those watching it.
The comedy show follows Natasha Lyonne as Charlie, who has an uncanny ability to determine if somebody is lying. She goes on the run from the casino she used to work at after a suspicious death occurs and then, on her travels, she meets a vast array of colorful characters as she solves a new murder each week on her road trip.
Each week presents new actors having the time of their lives and one of those people is the Oscar-winning Adrien Brody, who features as Sterling Frost Jr, the casino manager who is also the son of Ron Perlman‘s ruthless Sterling Frost Snr.

The following post contains spoilers about the “Ted Lasso” Season 3 finale, “So Long, Farewell.”
The third season of “Ted Lasso” came to an end on Wednesday with a season finale that sure felt like a series ender.
As many fans expected, Season 3 of the Emmy Award-winning Apple TV+ comedy series ended with Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) returning back to his Kansas home to be with his son, Henry (Gus Turner). Lasso’s departure meant big changes for the show’s broad supporting cast, including Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein). The former AFC Richmond captain, who in Season 2 embraced his post-retirement role as the team’s assistant coach, was elevated to the team’s manager during a montage of events that showed the near-future fates of numerous characters.

Spoiler Alert: This review contains spoilers from the series finale of “Ted Lasso,” now streaming on Apple TV+.
Here’s a scoop: There will be a fourth season of “Ted Lasso.” Actually, it has already aired, and it was not great.
“Ted Lasso” grew out a character created by Jason Sudekis and friends for NBC Premier League promos, a Kansas City-based football coach who somehow finds himself coaching the other football in London for AFC Richmond, a chronically downtrodden franchise. It’s a typical fish-out-of water premise, which is a classic comedy trope, but comes with some limitations — namely, when the fish becomes an amphibian and begins to love land life. Mindful of those constraints, “Lasso” debuted in 2020 to acclaim, with critics lauding its cock-eyed optimism as the world struggled with a deadly pandemic. Season 1’s 10 episodes ran an average of 30 minutes apiece, totaling 299 minutes for the season.

“Ted Lasso” wrapped up its acclaimed three-season run on Wednesday, as the Apple TV+ comedy took its final bow as AFC Richmond came so close to taking home the Premiere League Title, winding up second behind Manchester United in an appropriately humbling and hopeful conclusion to an honest and meaningful series.
It was a bittersweet episode, filled with the heartfelt speeches and emotional character development that fans have come to know and love from the two-time Emmy winner for Outstanding Comedy Series.
After the final game, it came time for the eponymous Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) to bid farewell to the team and town he’s come to love and return home to his son in the US. However, despite his departure, fans quickly got a chance to see the next stage in the lives of all the other beloved characters.

Yeah, this might be all that we get. This might just well be it.
It’s almost like the “Ted Lasso” theme song anticipated that the Season 3 finale would close nearly all major storylines of the Apple TV+ series as the show’s future remains unclear.
Season 3, Episode 12, titled “So Long, Farewell,” debuted Wednesday and wrapped up many of the loose ends left behind in previous episodes. Richmond got one last exciting soccer game — and a win! Rupert threw a fit. Nate went back to his rightful place on the coaching staff of the greyhounds. But, before all of this happened, Ted told Rebecca and Beard and the team that he had to say goodbye and go back home to his son.

Jason Sudeikis and ‘Ted Lasso’ Cast Rally at Warner Bros. Picket Lines Ahead of Show’s Season Finale
The cast and writers crew of Apple TV+’s sports comedy-drama “Ted Lasso” all came to a huddle at Warner Bros. picket lines on Tuesday.
Right after a day off from work, WGA writers hit the field for what is now the WGA’s fifth week of striking, as the WGA continues its fight for better residual pay in streaming, and the closure of the mini-room model, among other items, following a failed negotiation with the AMPTP. The cast and crew of “Ted Lasso” were one of the groups to hit picket lines.
“Much thanks to the gang for taking some time on such a big day to show their support for #wgastrong #tedlasso,” “Ted Lasso” co-creator Brendan Hunt said in an Instagram post.

Hank Azaria has built his career on two pillars: as a voice artist on “The Simpsons” and as a guest on a slew of hit shows from “Friends” to “Ray Donovan.” And with his recent turn on the fifth and final season of Amazon Prime Video’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” Azaria has delivered another masterclass in guest-acting.
“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” follows Rachel Brosnahan as the titular Miriam “Midge” Maisel, who embarks on a career in stand-up comedy after her husband (Michael Zegen) leaves her. Over the show’s five seasons, she experiences the ups and downs of said career with the help of her manager, Susie Myerson (Alex Borstein). Toward the end of season five, Midge is closer to seeing her career truly take off as she works in TV after she is hired to write for “The Gordon Ford Show” in the season premiere. And that’s where Azaria comes in.

Every great sports story needs a rival.
From iconic films like “Rocky” or even “Dodgeball” to the real-life drama of trades, drafts, and geographic enmity, the opponent is essential to the underdog athlete odyssey. “Ted Lasso”s AFC Richmond is as underdog as it gets as an English football team with a sweet but minimally-experienced American coach — but that was poised to shift in Season 3. After two seasons of “rom-communism” and soft men, Richmond’s own “wonder kid” Nate Shelley (Nick Mohammed) quit in a fit of rage and went to work for West Ham — a juggernaut team run by Richmond owner Rebecca’s (Hannah Waddingham) evil ex Rupert (Anthony Head).
Yet even with the sky-high stakes of league drama and personal history, “Ted Lasso” missed the mark in cultivating a genuinely compelling rivalry. Season 3 flounders for multiple reasons — IndieWire’s Steve Greene wrote that Season 3 put the cast “into...

The final whistle is approaching for “Ted Lasso” Season 3, which looks more and more like the final installment of the Apple TV+ comedy series starring Jason Sudeikis as the title character. Talk about a cliffhanger at the end of the penultimate episode, “Mom City,” which brought the story about fatherly figures full circle by introducing some of the mothers who made these men who they are.
Ted’s own mother Dottie (Becky Ann Baker) paid him an unexpected visit in Richmond before their big match versus Manchester City, the sky blue team that Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster) briefly defected to at the end of Season 1. Jamie’s mom also made an appearance.
Family members often bring out different sides of us, but a certain dilemma involving one Nate the Great (Nick Mohammed) shed a lot of light on the backstory of one Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt).

It’s been a tough time in Hollywood and beyond as the Writers Guild strike shut down production of just about every kind of entertainment — and lots of parties and events, too. Canceled/postponed celebrations included the MTV Movie & TV Awards, the 49th AFI Lifetime Achievement Award: A Tribute to Nicole Kidman, the Critics Choice Inaugural Celebration of LGBTQ+ Cinema & Television and many others.
But music festivals like the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival marked the early beginning of summer fest season and Netflix helped launch Pride Month early with a huge “All Out” celebration in West Hollywood. Meanwhile, “The Little Mermaid” swam into Hollywood for a lavish premiere and SeriesFest: Chapter 9 took over Denver. So all is not lost in the world of Parties & Premieres, but we sure hope that Hollywood writers get the raises they deserve and go back to work very soon.

"Ted Lasso"'s Billy Harris knows some fans have been waiting a long time for this. Harris plays Colin Hughes, a Welsh left winger for the shows's fictional AFC Richmond. In the third episode of season two, Colin makes a passing comment about Grindr, which goes unremarked on by the rest of the team. But some fans - especially LGBTQ+ ones - thought the show was laying the seeds before ultimately revealing Colin is queer. And in season three, the show reveals that Colin is gay, though he's still hesitant about coming out publicly. Harris tells Popsugar that he had "so many interactions" with fans about Colin's Grindr line, and he was glad that the show validated their theories this season.
He especially cherishes the sixth episode of this season, where Colin has a heart-to-heart with Trent Crimm (James Lance), who's also queer. Colin is tired of living what he calls two lives,...

“Ted Lasso” character Colin Hughes has had more time in the spotlight in Season 3 since he was revealed to be gay — and the development made sense to the actor playing him, Billy Harris. He said he began seeing the writing on the wall in Season 2.
Early on in Season 3, Colin is revealed to audiences to be gay, but his teammates don’t yet know. Journalist Trent Crimm (James Lance), who himself is gay, catches Colin kissing another man outside of Sam’s (Toheeb Jimoh) restaurant, and he confronts Colin about it. Isaac (Kola Bokinni) is also getting a sense that his teammate may be hiding his sexuality.
“From Series 1 to Series 3, now you’re, seeing the real side of him,” Harris told TheWrap at a “Ted Lasso” FYC event in Hollywood on Monday. “I think there’s something that he’s using and I think it could be comedy — sometimes...

Phil Dunster thinks “Ted Lasso” creator Jason Sudeikis embodies the “Lasso Effect” outside of the show.
The most recent episode of the comedy, which continues with Season 3’s trend toward longer episodes, watches Total Football take hold within the team as Ted (Sudeikis) and Coach Beard (Brendant Hunt) introduce the strategy to the Greyhounds. Lasso’s words of wisdom are to look at the scene and ask “What does this situation need?”
“There are some leaders who lead by giving power and others by protecting power, and he’s somebody who is who gives power,” Dunster told TheWrap at an FYC red carpet event in Hollywood. “And I think that’s the same as Ted. That’s something that I’ve tried to take on. If I learn anything from this, it’s about delegating power to others if I’m ever in a leading position.”

It’s fair to say that Ted Lasso has been something of a phenomenon, and continues to grip and entertain viewers as it reaches its third season, which is underway now on Apple TV+. Halfway through the season, which has episodes launching weekly on the platform, we had the pleasure in speaking with many of the familiar faces and affable characters that make up this heartwarming, and progressive comedy series.
Below you can find our interviews with Phil Dunster (Jamie), Nick Mohammed (Nathan), as well as Jeremy Swift (Leslie) and James Lance (Trent) together,. before ending with a grouped interview with three of Richmond’s finest, Cristo Fernandez (Dani), Kola Bokinni (Isaac) & Billy Harris (Colin).
We discuss all manner of things, from fan engagement, to eggs, to meeting the President of the United States of America, to the film’s forward-thinking narratives, and how the show can help impact the world we live in today.

Not every story decision made for season 3 of "Ted Lasso" has been a success. Frankly, some of them don't make any sense to me at all: Hinging Rebecca's arc on a meeting with a psychic remains absolutely baffling; I have yet to understand what was going on with Shandy's brief employment period; and I grow more nervous about the trajectory of the Keeley-Jack romance by the day.
Yet other aspects of the season have been beyond perfect — like Jamie teaching Roy how to ride a bike or the team coming together to clean up Sam's restaurant. It's a mixed bag of a season, but there are still plenty of episodes to go and if Ted has taught us anything, it's to always focus on the positives. And on the subject of what's going really well, one of the season's biggest standouts has to be James Lance as everyone's favorite...

[This story contains spoilers for “The Strings That Bind Us,” episode seven of Ted Lasso’s third season.]
Ted Lasso is a comedy, obviously, and occasionally a tearjerker, but it’s also something of a fantasy — a world where not only an American football coach initially hired as a revenge play can stick on for three seasons at the top levels of English football, but also one whose characters are almost always trying to become better people.
That’s part of what makes the show so appealing, and also what makes for such a jolt in the times when the real world shoulders its way into the story. “The Strings That Bind Us” had a big dose of that, but the episode (which clocked in at nearly an hour after last week’s 62-minute outing) still left room to bring home its core belief that people working together is the best way forward, on or off a field of play.
