Separated siblings, bullied children, horrible accidents and Marc Bolan’s death are only some of the tragedies here, but strong performances keep the horrors watchable
This Wales, Liverpool and London-set drama is a proper melodrama any way you slice it, but one with strong enough performances and sufficiently good dialogue to keep it from feeling tacky. The first chunk of expository scene-setting shuttles back and forth between the 1970s and the present day, establishing a sunny comic tone that’s suddenly pierced by tragedy. In the 70s, a coachload of kids from a children’s home are travelling to see their favourite band, T Rex, chaperoned by the home’s vicar (Andrew Lancel) and cheery carer Simon. The vicar’s daughter Penny (Eden Beach), about 10 years old, is close with home-resident Sadie (Amelia Rose Smith) and Sadie’s shy older brother Jimmy (Isaac Lancel-Watkinson), who is bullied by the older boys.

You’ve got your Casualty and Doctors – medical soaps that have been around forever and will hopefully stay around forever to reliably entertain, educate and break in the stars of tomorrow. Next, there are your factual medical shows of questionable taste – Embarrassing Bodies, 101 Things Removed From the Human Body and other fleshlump-zoo tours that’d put anybody off their dinner.
And then there are the following – quality 21st century hospital dramas, documentaries and comedies, all of which present their unique take on the world of medicine. Leave your own recommendations below.
Call the Midwife
Watch on: BBC One and BBC iPlayer (UK); PBS Masterpiece (US)
If you know, you know. And if you don’t know, then you haven’t been paying attention. There’s a popular misconception that BBC One’s long-running Sunday night drama Call the Midwife is a sickly sweet, rose-tinted, tweer-than-twee nostalgia-fest. Nuns on bicycles! Cockneys with hearts of gold!

Warning: contains spoilers for Series 4 of Unforgotten
It’s been two years since the last season of ITV’s hit crime drama Unforgotten, and at long last it’s back on our screens.
After that shocking Series 4 finale, in which we said a heartbreaking goodbye to Dci Cassie Stuart (aka the incredible Nicola Walker), we’ve got plenty of questions about the Series 5 cast.
In this latest series, when a body is found in a boarded-up fireplace, the team gets to work trying to identify who the victim is, and how long they’ve been there. We also discover that the person filling Cassie’s very large detective shoes as Sunny’s new boss-slash-bestie will be the prickly Dci Jessica James, who doesn’t exactly make a great first impression.
Unlike the previous four series, Series 5 of Unforgotten will also be made available as a bingeable box-set on Itvx as...

'Lord Montagu' documentary. 'Lord Montagu' documentary: Anti-gay persecution victim became successful entrepreneur and National Motor Museum founder On first blush, the life of a Lord of the Realm, a Peer to the English monarchy, a child born with an actual silver spoon in his mouth and an ancient estate to inherit, would seem wholly irrelevant to a commoner such as myself – and an American, no less. Yet the life of the man once known as Little Lord Montagu, as captured in director Luke Korem's titular documentary, Lord Montagu, is one that fascinates both for its storied historical context and for the way the Little Lord lived it. Which required a good deal of bravery, ingenuity, and affection for the “common people” and the things we love. At this writing, Edward Douglas-Scott-Montagu, 3rd Baron Montagu of Beaulieu, is 88 years old. The film about his Lordship begins when he is only two years old,...

If Yaron Zilberman's film can't make Christopher Walken and co look like real string players, at least it understands the dynamics of a quartet
It's very difficult to make an actor look as if they can really play a string instrument. I once helped out on a photoshoot, posing a group of models to look like a string quartet. It was an impossible task.
Yaron Zilberman, the director of this film about a New York string quartet, has clearly made great efforts to get things right: each actor apparently spent hours working with music coaches. Sadly, their efforts haven't really been successful – the actors just seem to be moving their bows across the strings. Every time I saw them miming to the soundtrack, the film lost credibility.
This wasn't helped by the fact that the excerpts from the piece they spend a good deal of time playing (Beethoven's String...
