The actors from the current revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s “Merrily We Roll Along” have skyrocketed in Gold Derby’s combined odds for the 2024 Tony Awards nominations. The prediction center displays commanding leads for Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez and Daniel Radcliffe to win their respective categories. This is an understandable result considering this revival is the hottest ticket in town and this trio of performers has been ever-present in the media. But how often does a trio of actors from the same production pull off three separate acting victories at the Tony Awards?
It’s quite common for a musical to grab two acting trophies, but three awards is much rarer. To date, only 15 musical productions have earned three acting wins. The first time this feat occurred was at the 1956 ceremony, which was ironically the first time the Tony Awards ever announced a slate of nominees (previously...

Tony-winning “Hairspray” star Dick Latessa died Monday, Broadway.com reported. He was 87. “‘Hairspray’ (and Broadway) has lost a huge piece of its heart. Rip to the glorious, loving and much loved Dick Latessa,” the musical’s composer and co-lyricist Marc Shaiman wrote on Facebook. “This was a man who defined Pro, with the timing of a Swiss watch and a voice, a smile and sweet soul that made you feel special just to know him,” Shaiman added. “We were lucky to have him in our lives, he was, truly, timeless.” Also Read: 'Hairspray Live!': You Can't Stop the...

So .... this is sort of a 'mash-up' of mediums and a fun 'take' on a traditional Hanukkah song, bolstered by the additional creative forces of Trey Parker and Marc Shaiman. It also boasts the talents of Harvey Fierstein, Jackie Hoffman, Peter Matthew Smith, Shoshana Bean, Clarke Thorell, Jenn Gambatese, Michael Longoria, Rashad Naylor, Tracy Jai Edwards, Chester Gregory II, Dick Latessa and others from the Broadway cast of Hairspray. The year was 2003, and Hairspray, pretty much, owned Broadway.

In this taut play, a man is on his deathbed while his wife anticipates his demise. Their adult children have a vicious fight. The son gets beaten badly and the daughter falls off the wagon.
"The Lyons" is a comedy.
And an insightful, truly excellent one.
Linda Lavin ("Alice") is Rita, a savvy woman who leafs through "House Beautiful," looking for decorating tips and chatting to her husband. She reels off old stories about neighbors until he explodes. "What the f*** are you talking about?" Ben (Dick Latessa, Broadway's "Hairspray" TV's "The Good Wife") screams in his opening line.
Unflappable, Rita explains she must redo their tacky living room where the "chairs are the color of disgust and the carpet is matted down with resignation."
When Ben says, "I'm dying, Rita," she responds, "I know, but try to be positive."
Playwright Nicky Silver delivers one perfect line after another. When...

Nicky Silver‘s newest play, The Lyons, has opened on Broadway and the reviews are fantastic. This is one of the better reviewed plays of the year and Linda Lavin has gotten strongest reviews of any actress this season. This play may knock off one of my previously predicted Best Play nominees. Linda Lavin will certainly get a Best Actress nomination and Dick Latessa, who plays Lavin’s husband, may get a Best Actor nomination (though he may be in the Best Featured Actor category, so I’m not sure how best to judge his odds).

The Lyons Cort Theatre, NY
Despite solid performances from Linda Lavin and Dick Latessa, The Lyons is a lost cause before the curtain closes on the first act, and there's no improvement thereafter. A fumbling and confused script by Nicky Silver is the production's greatest weakness, but some forced and postured performances don't help matters.
Linda Lavin is a powerful and commanding presence with the sexiness of a confident, mature woman. She possesses a firm grasp of sadistic humor, getting laughs with facial expressions and eye movements alone, and her first scene with Dick Latessa would have you think that you were in for an enjoyable dark comedy. Lavin and Latessa have a twisted chemistry and establish a comic rhythm that the production's other players are never quite able to jump into. Latessa attaches himself to his hospital bed with more than an IV, creating a believable deathbed atmosphere without...

Nicky Silver’s debut on Broadway is also a return to form: The Lyons — his jet-black comedy of ineradicable self-interest and families wired to explode, or just corrode — resembles his nineties showpieces of towering pessimism and contempt. True, no one engages in literal cannibalism (à la Fat Men in Skirts) or deliberately infects his insufferable family with AIDS (Pterodactyls), but the old, bold, cold Silver style is very much in evidence. (The badinage is the whole point: I won’t give away any here.) I stand by most of what I said when the show opened Off Broadway last fall: Linda Lavin has not just maintained but magnified the vivid grotesque that is Rita Lyons, nerveless and gimlet-eyed matriarch of a rapidly disintegrating clan of neurotics, wife to dying, cantankerous Ben (Dick Latessa), mother to brittle, divorced Lisa (Kate Jennings Grant) and “creepy” — his father’s description — Curtis (Michael...

New York -- The Jewish mother. She's been a fixture of our pop culture ever since, well, it feels like biblical times.
There's the good kind: Stubborn, loyal, thinks her kids are the best thing since a nice sliced pumpernickel – and will make damned sure everyone else thinks so, too.
And there's the bad kind: to wit, Rita Lyons, in Nicky Silver's new play "The Lyons," a character played with such dexterity, humor and spot-on timing by the wonderful Linda Lavin that you nearly forget the pain she's inflicting at every turn.
Her kids the best thing since sliced bread? Pfft. Rita tells her daughter she might want to get her little boy tested, because he seems, well, retarded.
"Just moderately," says the loving grandma. "It's not a criticism."
Even worse for a Jewish mother, she tells her son, a writer of short stories, that he lacks talent. "You've...

Sean Hayes needs to completely ignore the outrageous commentary spit out in the April 26 Newsweek article “Straight Jacket” written by Ramin Setoodeh that personally attacks him saying, “Openly gay actors still have reason to be scared. While it’s Ok for straight actors to play gay, it’s rare for someone to pull off the trick in reverse!” No one in the acting world agrees with this Bs!
The article, “was very unfortunate,” Cady Huffman, Tony Award Winning Actress who starred in Mel Brooks’s Broadway hit The Producers, told HollywoodLife.com Exclusively May 17 at the Annual Gala for Creative Alternatives of New York at The Loeb Central Park Boathouse. “I think Sean is great in [Promises, Promises] and I thought that was a ridiculous thing for them to say!”

Fans of Ewan McGregor, Kristen Stewart and James Van Der Beek (!) will be seeing double this spring, as arthouses and multiplexes host an array of indie films ranging from the travails of septuagenarian New Yorkers looking for love ("The Last New Yorker") to 13-year-old assassins on the hunt for their first kill ("Kick-Ass"). If real life is more your speed, there are new documentaries about reviving animation strips (the Disney doc "Waking Sleeping Beauty") and stripping down (the burlesque history "Behind the Burly Q"), while foreign wonders like the French crime epics "A Prophet" and "Mesrine" mix with Korean treasures "Mother" and "The Good, The Bad and The Weird."

A musical with a gay sensibility and a play about a gay baseball player dominated the 57th annual Tony Awards, presented Sunday at Radio City Music Hall. Hairspray, the smash-hit tuner derived from the cult John Waters film, was spritzed with a sheen of victory by winning eight Tonys including best musical, actor and actress in a musical (Harvey Fierstein and Marissa Jaret Winokur), featured actor in a musical (Dick Latessa), book (Mark O'Donnell, Thomas Meehan), score (Marc Shaiman, Scott Wittman) and costume design William Ivey Long). Take Me Out, Richard Greenberg's baseball comedy-drama, scored a triple play with awards for best play, featured actor in a play (Denis O'Hare), and in a surprise outcome, best director of a play for Joe Mantello. The expected winner in the directing slot was supposed to be Robert Falls, who won a Drama Desk award for the all-star revival of Long Day's Journey Into Night. The O'Neill drama took Tonys for best revival of a play and actor and actress in a play for Brian Dennehy and Vanessa Redgrave.
Hairspray continues to spread its sheen over the Broadway theater awards season. The campy musical based on the John Waters film has added 13 Tony Award nominations to its award-bedecked coiffure. That's the most for any show this year. The show has already won best musical from the Outer Critics Circle and the Drama League and received 14 nominations from the Drama Desk. Among the Hairspray Tony noms are best musical, actor in a musical (Harvey Fierstein), actress in a musical Marissa Jaret Winokur), featured actor in a musical (Dick Latessa, Corey Reynolds) and score, book, and choreography. Incidentally, Fierstein, who plays Edna Turnblad, is the first Tony nominee so honored for portraying a member of the opposite sex. Previous drag nominees George Hearn (La Cage Aux Folles), B.D. Wong (M. Butterfly), Wilson Jermaine Heredia (Rent) and Fierstein in his own play Torch Song Trilogy played cross-dressers. The awards will be presented June 8 at Radio City Music Hall in a three-hour ceremony to be broadcast in its entirety by CBS. Movin' Out, the Billy Joel-Twyla Tharp dance musical, came in second in the nomination derby with 10 mentions. The revival of Nine, starring Antonio Banderas, is third with eight noms. Among plays, the all-star production of Long Day's Journey Into Night won the race with seven nominations, including noms for its each of its principal players (Vanessa Redgrave, Brian Dennehy, Robert Sean Leonard and Philip Seymour Hoffman).
