Focus Features has bought international rights to Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist,” starring Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, Guy Pearce and Joe Alwyn, Variety has learned.
Corbet, who sits on the Berlinale jury, penned the film with Mona Fastvold (“The World to Come”), a Norwegian filmmaker who is also his wife. The film charts 30 years in the lives of visionary architect László Toth and his wife, Erzsébet, who flee post-war Europe in 1947 and witness the birth of modern America. László initially endures poverty and indignity, but the architect’s genius soon catches the attention of charming industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren, whose dark influence threatens to destroy everything László and his wife have built.
The cast is completed by Raffey Cassidy (“White Noise”), Isaach De Bankolé (“Casino Royale”), Alessandro Nivola (“The Many Saints of Newark”), Stacy Martin (“Nymphomaniac Vol I”), Emma Laird (“Mayor of Kingstown”), Jonathan Hyde (“Titanic”) and Peter Polycarpou...

Gravitas Ventures has released the first trailer for Light Years, the coming-of-age comedy with Andrew Lauren and DJ Gugenheim at Andrew Lauren Productions and Channing Tatum and Reid Carolin’s Free Association producing and Colin Thompson directing.
The film follows a thirtysomething man as he embarks on a cosmic vision quest. Thompson stars in the pic alongside Christopher Gray, Jennifer Lafleur, Makenzie Leigh, Russell Posner and Libby Winters.
The story of how the film came together has its own, overcoming-the-odds feel to it as Thompson did everything from overcoming hurdles in post-production due to the Covid-19 pandemic, to having to play a number of characters to cover the actors not able to partake in filming, and to the script eventually finding its way into the hands of Free Association.

Specialty distributors continue to ramp up spring releases, though with a somewhat less-packed slate of newcomers compared with last weekend. Nearly five decades after its recording, Aretha Franklin concert documentary Amazing Grace begins a regular theatrical run via Neon, which picked up the title in December. Amazon Studios is launching multiple-Oscar-nominated British director Mike Leigh’s historical epic Peterloo in select New York and L.A. locations. Greenwich Entertainment, meanwhile, is heading out with Emilio Estevez-directed drama The Public, with Jena Malone, Gabrielle Union, Alec Baldwin, Christian Slater and Estevez.
Also launching in limited release is IFC Films’ horror Western The Wind, in addition to Good Deed drama Storm Boy at AMC Empire in New York and AMC CityWalk in L.A. along with other major cities.

Brady Corbet, whose latest film “Vox Lux” with Natalie Portman and Jude Law has been drawing some awards buzz, talked to Variety about the themes of his next project, “The Brutalist” at the Stockholm Film Festival.
Unveiled in September, the rough plot of “The Brutalist” revolves around a Hungarian-born Jewish architect who emigrates to the U.S. after the end of World War II. The film charts 30 years in the life of this character and others.
Corbet, who presented “Vox Lux” at the Stockholm Film Festival, which he attended with his wife, the Norwegian filmmaker Mona Fastvold, said that although “The Brutalist” will be a period movie, it will have contemporary resonance.
“‘The Brutalist’ is about a character who survived the camps, and also about his wife who survived camps but is stuck in a displaced persons camp on the Hungarian border,” said Corbet.

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper got a standing ovation, Alfonso Cuaron brought audiences to tears, and Michael Moore revved up the crowds at the Toronto International Film Festival with a broadside against Donald Trump. It was, by any measure, a week and a half of high drama. Cooper’s “A Star Is Born” and Cuaron’s “Roma” solidified their positions as Oscar frontrunners, and Moore’s “Fahrenheit 11/9” made it clear it wouldn’t be getting a White House screening, at least not during this administration.
But Toronto is more than just a film festival. Hollywood studios cross the border hoping to find films to buy. In that regard, it wasn’t much of a market. The festival is nearly over, but dozens of films still need to find distributors. Moreover, the all-night bidding wars that once injected energy into the easy-going Canadian gathering never really materialized.

A24 has bought North American distribution rights to Claire Denis’ sci-fi drama “High Life,” starring Robert Pattinson, Juliette Binoche, Mia Goth and André Benjamin.
“High Life” premiered Sept. 9 at the Toronto Film Festival and is the first English-language feature film for Denis, who directed from a script she wrote with Jean-Pol Fargeau and Geoff Cox.
The story is set on a spaceship traveling with a group of criminals on board. The criminals have been tricked into believing they will be freed if they participate in a mission towards a black hole to find an alternate energy source, while undergoing sexual experiments by the scientists on board. What might appear to be an homage to David Bowie glitz on its cover, is actually much deeper in Brady Corbet’s Vox Lux which follows the unconventional metamorphosis of a young teenager from school shooting survivor to tortured pop idol.
Similar to how Natalie Portman pulled out all the stops and transformed into a sublime, razor-sharp ballerina for her Oscar-winning role in 2010’s Black Swan, she made certain she was vocally prepped and choreographed before her 10 days of shooting on Vox Lux (the entire film was shot over 22 days). Financing dropped out prior to the pic’s production and delaying its start which provided Portman with extra prep time so she was ready to hit the ground running when filming began.
“It gives you more time when things fall apart, as long as they come back together again,” Portman says.

Exclusive: A24 has acquired North American distribution rights to the provocative sci-fi drama High Life, which made its Toronto Film Festival debut Sunday night at Roy Thomson Hall. The film marks French filmmaker Claire Denis’ long-anticipated English-language debut, and stars Robert Pattinson, Juliette Binoche, Mia Goth and André Benjamin. Script was written by Denis, Jean-Pol Fargeau and Geoff Cox.
Deal was low seven figures, and A24 will go with a traditional theatrical release.
The Beau Travail director this time has tackled a Kubrick-ian science fiction tale set in deep space, where a group of criminals head toward a black hole. The spaceship’s crew is a collection of dangerous prisoners. Monte (Pattinson) is the only crew member awake as the voyage unfolds in solitude, tending to the ship to keep them all alive as they hurtle through space. And also caring for a baby daughter, Willow, who was born on board.

Neon has landed Brady Corbet’s “Vox Lux,” a drama about a troubled pop diva that’s drawing some serious awards buzz for star Natalie Portman. The film premiered to largely favorable reviews at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Several studios were interested in nabbing the project.
It is possible that the indie studio could push “Vox Lux” into theaters this year in order to qualify for Oscars, something it did to great success with “I Tonya,” another Toronto acquisition that went on to score an Academy Award for Allison Janney.
“Vox Lux” fits in with Neon’s strategy of partnering with younger, edgier auteurs. The film is only the second feature for Corbet, who previously directed “The Childhood of a Leader.” Previous Neon releases include “Colossal,” “Beach Rats,” and “Ingrid Goes West.” The studio had an arthouse breakout with “Three Identical Strangers,” a documentary about triplets separated...
