Boris Becker and Nick Kyrgios have been beefing on social media lately after the Australian commented about former tennis greats, including the German.
Kyrgios is an outspoken individual who doesn't particularly care whether you like that. He's going to tell you what he thinks, and he certainly did in a recent interview with the Athletic when he compared tennis eras.
While tennis stars are generally quite complimentary of past legends, Kyrgios dissed the legacy of Becker and others by implying that they would struggle today.
Obviously, the comments went viral, with some agreeing with him and some disagreeing with him. At face value, the quality of tennis today is probably greater than in the past as simply everything evolved.
There is better equipment, better training, and better nutrition today, so it's natural to assume that today's tennis players are superior to those in the past.
And yet, comparing eras doesn't work.

Former Atp World No. 3 Nikolay Davydenko spoke about the difficulty of winning all four Grand Slams in the same season when asked to assess Novak Djokovic's chances of doing so in 2024.
The Calendar Grand Slam is one of the hardest accomplishments in tennis. Only one man has done it in the Open Era (Rod Laver in 1969). Novak Djokovic is one of very few Atp players to have come within touching distance of this monumental feat.
Djokovic has won three Grand Slams in the same season on four occasions (he's the first man to do this), doing so in 2011, 2015, 2021, and more notably in 2023 when Carlos Alcaraz denied him a place in the record books at Wimbledon.
Djokovic, 36, will have another shot to win the Golden Slam next season - the equivalence of winning all four majors and an Olympic gold medal - a rare occurrence that happened back in 1988 thanks...

Legendary tennis player Rod Laver backed Ben Shelton to win a Grand Slam event in the future, and not many would disagree with him.
Ben Shelton is the name in tennis right now, especially after an incredible run at the US Open recently, where only Novak Djokovic could stop him in the semi-final. It was a great show of talent and maturity from the very young Shelton, who marches on towards stardom.
Instead of going on a vacation, Shelton opted to play at the Laver Cup, excited about the chance to learn from fellow professional players , and it's been a delight. He delivered the first point for Team World , who smashed Team Europe on that first day. The second day didn't go any differently, and once again, Shelton was delivering a win in doubles together with Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Novak Djokovic is being called the greatest of all time by many recently, including noted tennis coach Darren Cahill.
The Serbian did many great things in tennis, but most of the attention regarding his achievements is around his recent US Open triumph. That was Grand Slam number 24 , the highest number we've ever seen somebody on the men's side of the sport win.
Margaret Court has 24 as well, and while the numbers are the same, the significance is far greater with Djokovic. He won't stop here and will attempt to go for number 25 in Melbourne in a few months, so the legend of Djokovic is set to keep growing.
Speaking about it recently during an appearance on the Advantage Connors Podcast , tennis coach Darren Cahill recognized Djokovic as the greatest of all time, believing it to be irrefutable.

Ben Shelton will take on Tommy Paul in a big Grand Slam match for the second time this year, and he hopes to do a bit better on home soil at the 2023 US Open .
Shelton and Paul had a supernova start to their seasons Down Under, making their way to the quarter-final of the Australian Open. Neither was expected to do so, but Shelton's run was far more surprising as it was his maiden Grand Slam experience.
The American will now take on Paul for another Grand Slam quarter-final, and he hopes to do a bit of a better job. Although Paul does have the edge against his compatriot because he's been playing at this level on the Atp Tour for a longer time, the youngster can still surprise him. It's something that played a factor in the first matchup, which Shelton admitted in his most recent press conference.

The Open Era in tennis is symbolic of shaping the sport into what we know today as modern-day tennis.
It put an end to the tennis divide and heralded the start of tennis as a fully-fledged professional sport. The birth of Open Era tennis happened in 1968. And as the name suggests, 'Open' was to allow for inclusivity for amateur and professional tennis players to compete in all Grand Slam tournaments and earn prize money for their efforts.
The period before the Open Era was called Amateur Era, and the four Grand Slams, namely, Australian Open , Roland Garros , Wimbledon , and US Open , only allowed amateurs and not professionals to play in them. Amateurs did not make money and competed for pride and prestige. They were prohibited from taking money or compensation in any other form.
Professional tennis players regularly competed in head-to-head tours instead of tournaments and made a living for it.

Novak Djokovic has progressed to his 35th career Grand Slam final at Wimbledon , the most out of any other player in the Grand Slam era.
Djokovic continued his quest to retain the Wimbledon title with a straight-sets victory against Jannik Sinner in the semi-final . It will be the Serbian's third Grand Slam final of the season after he won the 2023 Australian Open and the Roland Garros.
In the process, Djokovic has made history and surpassed some of the greatest-ever players in the all-time Grand Slam finals list. Djokovic overtook Chris Evert (34 finals) to make the most-ever career finals out of any men's or women's players since the slam era started in 1968.
Before the 2023 season, Djokovic was already ahead of his former 'Big Three' competitor Roger Federer in terms of finals reached. Federer, who retired from professional tennis in 2022 at the Laver Cup, ended his career with 31 Grand Slam finals, winning...

Novak Djokovic is currently focusing on Wimbledon, and those thoughts might get occupied with the 'Calendar Slam' if he wins at Wimbledon.
Novak Djokovic won both grand slams this year so far. He's likely to win Wimbledon simply because he's won it 7 times so far and his Roland Garros run proved that he's still the best against the current tennis landscape. That only gets amplified on grass because there will be only one player in London that has ever beaten him on a grass court before .
If he does win Wimbledon, he'll be only the US Open away from completing the calendar grand slam - something that hasn't been done since Rod Laver. He's not thinking about it right now but he's certainly capable of doing so according to his own coach Goran Ivanisevic.
Another former coach Boris Becker warned him against repeating the mistake he did the last time...

Former player Ilie Nastase believes that Rafael Nadal 's 14 Roland Garros wins are a harder achievement than Novak Djokovic 's 23 Grand Slams.
Comparing things in sports is very difficult to do because sports are fluid and it's never the same thing. Even the same sport changes from year to year and in tennis and on the Atp Tour particularly, the change is constant.
What happens one year rarely happens the other year so it's very hard to compare players, eras, and achievements. Yet it's been done because people like to compare things, whether it's sports, jewelry, cars, or phones.
Djokovic recently won Roland Garros becoming the first male player to ever win 23 Grand Slam trophies . It's an incredible achievement simply as it was never done before and his biggest rival, Rafael Nadal quickly congratulated him on the 'impossible achievement' . Novak Djokovic 's 2023 Roland Garros was historic but just how historic was it? The numbers can explain that the best.
Novak Djokovic won the 2023 Roland Garros by beating Casper Ruud in the final and he became the first man ever to win 23 Grand Slam titles. That's one of the many records he broke during this run and while the most important one, it's certainly not the only one.
He also became the only player to win each of four of the grand slams at least three times , and he also replaced Roger Federer as the player with the best tiebreak winning percentag e . All of that makes this run very iconic but there are plenty of other things he was able to complete at this year's French Open.

'It's disrespectful towards all great champions': Djokovic on Goat label after 23rd Grand Slam title
Paris, June 12 (Ians) After capturing the historic achievement of winning a record 23rd Grand Slam title at Roland Garros, Novak Djokovic said he doesn’t want to call himself the greatest as it will be “disrespectful towards all the great champions of different eras”.
The Serbian defeated Norway’s Casper Ruud in straight sets on Sunday to become the first player to win all four majors at least three times.
Djokovic’s title run in Paris, where he defeated Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals, means he will return to No. 1 in the Atp Rankings on Monday for a record-extending 388th week.
In the post-match presser, when asked, “How does it feel to be the greatest male player in history?” Djokovic said: “I don’t want to say that I am the greatest, because I feel, I’ve said it before, it’s disrespectful towards all the great champions in different...

Dubai, March 3 (Ians) Daniil Medvedev moved to within one win of capturing his third consecutive tour-level title on Friday when he ended Novak Djokovic’s perfect start to the season at the Dubai Tennis Championships, here.
In the 14th chapter of their rivalry, Medvedev was locked in from ball one, triumphing 6-4, 6-4 to extend his winning streak to 13 matches. The third seed stood deep behind the baseline to soak up Djokovic’s ball-striking.
Medvedev committed just 12 unforced errors compared to 38 from Djokovic and he was rapid around the court, chasing down a number of drop shots to advance after one hour and 35 minutes.

Melbourne, Jan 27 (Ians) India tennis star Sania Mirza on Friday wrapped up her legendary Grand slam career as Australian Open mixed doubles runner-up. The Indian ace and partner Rohan Bopanna lost to the all-Brazilian pair Luisa Stefani and Rafael Matos in the mixed doubles final here at Melbourne Park.
Sania and Bopanna were beaten 7-6(2), 6-2 by Brazilians Stefani and Matos, who were playing in their first-ever Grand Slam final.
In her final major, the 36-year-old Sania admitted her emotions almost boiled over after the Indians stunned third seeds and reigning Wimbledon champions Desirae Krawczyk and Neal Skupski in the semifinals. There was no holding them back after her final match at Melbourne Park, 22 years after she first teamed with Bopanna.
Interestingly, Sania claimed her first major in 2009 at Melbourne Park, when she paired up with Mahesh Bhupathi. And she ended her illustrious Grand Slam career here.

Serbia’s Novak Djokovic beat Italy’s Matteo Berrettini in four sets Sunday at Wimbledon to take the men’s singles final. That sets him up for a potential Calendar Year Grand Slam if he triumphs at the US Open, and a Calendar Year Golden Slam, if he also wins the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

Paris, June 14 (Ians) World No. 1 Novak Djokovic attributed his comeback in French Open final from two sets down to winning the title to a small break that helped him bury self-doubts.
After losing the first two sets 6-7(6), 2-6, the Serb left the Court Philippe-Chatrier for a break and returned a changed player as he downed fifth-seed Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas to win his second title at Roland Garros as well as his 19th Grand Slam title. Tennis great John McEnroe has been playing himself in movies such as “Mr. Deeds” and “Wimbledon” for almost 20 years, but he was well aware he was a “left-field” choice of narrator for Netflix’s “Never Have I Ever,” a coming-of-age comedy about an Indian American teenager. In fact, he was counting on the shock value.
“I was hopeful that people would look at this and go, ‘Whoa, why the hell is John McEnroe doing this?’” he says.
McEnroe’s gruff delivery of some pretty woke lines is instantly recognizable in the 10-part series, which launched April 27. “This is Devi Vishwakumar,” McEnroe booms in episode one. “She’s a 15-year-old Indian American girl from Sherman Oaks, California, and it’s her first year of sophomore year. And I am legendary tennis player John McEnroe. Wow, I look great there,” he quips against archive footage of his matches.

When Eleanor (Kristen Bell) and her friends come upon the interdimensional door between Earth and the rest of the immortal universe, the demon Michael (Ted Danson) and his helper Janet (D’Arcy Carden) have to come clean about their experiences in The Bad Place and their rebooted chance at redemption.
Unfortunately, in doing so, they’ve doomed the four humans to being damned because now their actions would be tainted with the knowledge of an afterlife. After each of the mortals spiral out in various ways, Eleanor finally comes to the conclusion that even if she’s fated for The Bad Place, she can at least help others on Earth not meet the same fate.

John McEnroe isn’t saying sorry for his comment that Serena Williams would be “like 700 in the world” in the men’s tennis rankings — but he does have a new ranking for the decorated athlete.
In an interview with CBS This Morning on Tuesday, McEnroe addressed his controversial earlier remark to NPR’s Lulu Garcia-Navarro in which he called Williams the “best female player ever,” refusing to drop the gender identifier.
Host Norah O’Donnell asked the former tennis player whether he’d like to apologize.

The Wimbledon Championships are the Mecca for all tennis professionals, proving why it is the most coveted Grand Slam in the tennis calendar. Since its inauguration in 1877, Wimbledon has consistently attracted the world’s greatest players to SW19 all hoping to be crowned champion. The history of the prestigious event cannot be underestimated, making it the highlight of the tennis calendar each and every year.
For the majority of its 128 championships, Wimbledon played host to tennis’ greatest amateur players, including former British three-time champion Fred Perry and all-round tennis legend Rod Laver. Due to its immense popularity, commercial pressures and rumours of amateurs taking money under the table, the Wimbledon Championships entered the open era in 1968. This is heralded as the birth of modern, professional tennis and was the first time that players could legitimately earn a living from their sport.

Men Are From Mars: DuVernay’s Fascinating Sports Doc Focuses on Elusive Williams Sister
Director Ava DuVernay further displays the fascinating reaches of her talents with her latest project, Venus Vs. a sports documentary for Espn centered exclusively on the inspirational Venus Williams. DuVernay, who began her directorial career in documentary, but is now perhaps more widely recognized for her expertly hewn pair of dramas, I Will Follow in 2011 and Middle of Nowhere in 2012 (for which you can add the parenthetical moniker “trailblazer,” as she’s the first black woman to take home the Best Director prize at Sundance), astoundingly revealed that she’s not well versed in the sports or tennis realm. Perhaps this is why the film, which follows on the heels of another doc focusing on the Williams sisters that opened earlier this year, feels so readily accessible to all. The royals watched the players in their quarter final matches from the royal box at the tennis event in London, joined by an impressive array of stars, including former tennis players Rod Laver and Andre Agassi and royals Prince Michael of Kent and Lady Frederick Windsor. For the matches Catherine chose a knee-length cream Alexander McQueen dress with a double navy line trim and neckerchief style collar. Rafael Nadal (above, right) defeated the No. 1-ranked Novak Djokovic (above, left) in the rain-delayed French Open final to pass tennis great Bjorn Borg for most titles won at the major with seven. It is easily Nadal's best major - he is virtually unbeatable on the clay surface. The next-most titles he has at a major are two wins at Wimbledon.
Djokovic was stopped in his quest to be the first man since Rod Laver to win four consecutive majors. He had topped Nadal in the previous three - defeating Rafa at 2011 Wimbledon, 2011 U.S. Open and 2012 Australian Open. Their rivalry was the first to meet up at four Slam finals in a row.
Nadal is 52-1 all time at the French Open. His only loss came in 2009 to Roger Soderling and Rafa later admitted he was battling injuries and off-the-court family problems at the time.

Top Us tennis player who won five Grand Slam titles in the 1940s
Pauline Betz, who has died aged 91, was a leading tennis player of the 1940s, winning five Grand Slam singles titles, including Wimbledon in 1946, the first time she competed in the tournament. But she was never able to defend the title. The next year she became the victim of one of the worst examples of ruthless pomposity by amateur officials in the days when "professional" in sport was a dirty word.
Until the arrival of open tennis in 1968, anyone signing a contract with a professional promoter was immediately banned from all the world's great tournaments, such as Wimbledon and Roland Garros. But Betz was banned without even having signed a contract. In fact, it was only on the evidence of a letter written by a third party – Elwood Cooke, who was the husband of another player, Sarah Palfrey...

We prefer Nick Jonas' version, but Katy Perry's isn't half bad.
Perry decided to have a little fun at her concert in Melbourne, Australia, on -- what else? -- Friday, Apr. 29. The "Teenage Dream" singer put her own spin on Rebecca Black's infamous hit song "Friday."
"So I can't play the flute, but it doesn't really matter," Perry tells the crowd. "You know why? 'Cause all magical things happen on a Friday." With that, she launches into her cover of "Friday," which prompts the crowd at the Rod Laver Arena to cheer.
The concert-goers clearly enjoyed the surprise -- cheering and singing along to the chorus. An added bonus is that they finally learned Sunday comes after Saturday, which comes after Friday... or not because Perry only performed half of the song.

Miley Cyrus is not a fan of lip-sync artists and internet sensations. In an interview with Australia's The Telegraph to promote her upcoming tour, she blasts those preferring to mime their songs rather than singing live, "I would rather someone say I sang like crap than have people see me lip-sync."
Talking about today's aspiring singers who use YouTube to gain fame, Miley stated, "It should be harder to be an artist." In a further statement, the "Can't Be Tamed" singer added, "You shouldn't just be able to put a song on YouTube and go out on tour."
Although the former "Hannah Montana" star didn't mention any name, many people quickly link her statement as a diss to Britney Spears and Rebecca Black. The former is well known for her lip-sync concerts, while the latter gained overnight fame via her viral hit "Friday".

Tennis games have long been a staple of video gaming ever since the early days of the Grandstand “console” and the likes of Pong with its paddle controls. Since then we’ve had numerous games on many different formats, some successful – Virtua Tennis, some not so much – Jennifer Capriati Tennis. There have also been different takes on video game tennis, from fun games like Wii Sports to true tennis simulations like Top Spin… Of which Top Spin 4 is the latest iteration.
Top Spin 4, developed by 2K Czech, published by 2K Sports and released on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii, is (as per the title) the fourth game in the Top Spin series and features licensed professional players and venues, including tennis superstars such as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi.

Ke$ha was reportedly spotted at Rihanna's concert in Melbourne, Australia on Tuesday, March 8 but her ultimate entertainment was apparently not the Barbados-born singer. The "TiK ToK" hitmaker was said hooking up with DJ Calvin Harris during the show at the Rod Laver Arena.
"They were getting right into it," sources told Melbourne Herald Sun (via PopEater). "They were practically fornicating. They were all over each other and didn't care who was watching." After some Pda, Ke$ha and Calvin were reported leaving the show early.
Ke$ha and Calvin first met in 2009 when she supported the Scottish record producer on tour. Calvin is currently supporting Rihanna on her Last Girl on Earth tour and the "Blow" singer allegedly decided to fly to Australia when she heard Calvin was there.

Taylor Swift has come under fire once again, and this time it is because of the possums. The 20-year-old drew criticism from Australian wildlife authorities after she tweeted her experience feeding the possums in a Melbourne park following her sold-out performance on Wednesday, February 10.
The Department of Sustainability and Environment was quick to issue a statement in response to her tweet. "We know people who feed wild animals often have the best intentions and that it is attractive to tourists who want to interact with Australian wildlife," a spokesperson said. "However, Dse advises people not to feed wild animals... it can disrupt their natural behavior and it can cause some animals to lose their natural fear of people, making them vulnerable to attack."
