- Pictured with Harry Stuhldreher, Don Miller, and Jim Crowley on one of fifteen 32¢ US commemorative postage stamps in the "Celebrate the Century" series, issued 28 May 1998, celebrating the 1920s. Together they were known as the "Four Horsemen of Notre Dame".
- All-American fullback at Notre Dame, where he played from 1922 to 1924.
- Inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1951 as a charter member.
- Resigned from Notre Dame in February of 1941 to assume the post of commissioner of the NFL. Served as commissioner from 1941 to 1945, when he resigned to start a business career in Chicago.
- Served as head football coach at Columbia College (1925-1926); Duquesne (1927-1933) and Notre Dame (1934-1940), where he also served as athletic director. Compiled a 47-13-3 record at Notre Dame and a 103-34-11 docket overall.
- Inducted into the Loras College Varsity Athletics Hall of Fame in 1983 (inaugural class).
- Inducted into the Quad-City Sports Hall of Fame in 1987 (inaugural class).
- Inducted into the Iowa Sports Hall of Fame in 1951 (inaugural class).
- Inducted into the Rose Bowl Game Hall of Fame in 1992.
- Interred in Calvary Cemetery, Evanston, Illinois.
