The Hollywood Foreign Press Association dropped their nominations for the 75th annual Golden Globe Awards this morning, shouting out some brand new TV shows and adding some momentum to some of the biggest awards season campaigns – The Shape of Water! Three Billboards! Dunkirk! A few other major players, of course, got left off the lineup in a big way – the Globes have a history of some headslapping choices (remember The Tourist for Best Movie? Cybill for Best TV Comedy?). And while this year seemed a little more on-point than usual,...

On-screen presidents are an unusual collection because they don’t always reflect what we want from a leader. (Though these days, it seems that consensus is fracturing more than ever.)
Some are abrasive, some are diabolical. Others are worse at their job than you would expect. So when picking the “best” TV versions of U.S. presidents, it’s just as important to consider what these individuals brought to the position that previous inhabitants did not, for good or ill.
Despite the occasional missteps of these fictional Commanders-in-Chief, many of them do represent the theoretical ideals that a national leader should uphold: a clear grasp of the office’s privilege, an understanding of the ramifications of key policy decisions, and the power that words can have to send a message to the entire nation.
We kept this particular roundup to fictional Presidents of the United States. You could make a...

A grown man wears a penguin onesie. An gimmicky moron shrieks his catchphrase (which, if you happen to forget it, is emblazoned on his T-shirt). A puppet expresses his existential crisis in French, with subtitles. It sounds like a “Saturday Night Live” sketch, but those are all things that really happened during the season premiere of “The Bachelorette.” You know, the real show.
Even if you’ve never seen a complete episode of either “The Bachelor” or “The Bachelorette,” ABC’s legendary reality franchises, you probably know them well thanks to the depth of its penetration within pop culture.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, and to paraphrase those renowned seventies scholars the Brady Bunch, “When it’s time to change then it’s time to change.”
While I’ve tried my hardest to slowly sneak those changes in, it’s gotten to the point where we’ll need to do something more drastic if the few of you reading the Weekend Warrior on a weekly basis actually want it to remain coming to you on a weekly basis. Because of that, we’re going to try something different by not throwing in as much independent limited releases for those checking the column out, and making the column a little more focused at least for the time being. (I’m probably going to move reviews for my Top Picks over to my blog, which is easy enough to...

The mystery organization’s threats became very real during Thursday’s episode of Scandal when a beloved character met a bloody end.
After Olivia (Kerry Washington) & Co. teamed up to free Cyrus (Jeff Perry) from prison so he could become the next Potus, Mellie (Bellamy Young) was set to concede, but Elizabeth North (Portia de Rossi) convinced her not to back down. Unfortunately, it turns out Lizzie was doing the bidding of the mysterious organization!

The cherry trees may be blooming in DC, but young love certainly is not.
Relationships were falling apart left, right, and center on Madam Secretary Season 3 Episode 14, but as always, there was still work to do. International aid deals wait for no broken hearts.
Daisy's heartbreak was the most unexpected, and the one I don't regret. Her beau seemed liked a boorish bro-dude, but turned out to be a CIA operative using the job at State as a cover. I'm not sure yet if this redeems him or makes him even more reprehensible.
At the very least, it does get Ms back to it's Season 1 thriller roots.
Honestly, Daisy may be mourning lost possibilities, but did anybody think those two had a future beyond a few very hot and heavy rolls in the hay? Kevin, or whatever his real name was, was a palette cleanser, not a prince charming.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: Which low-rated show do you think deserves a boost of 10 million viewers?

This is tricky, because we’re in a place where my favorite shows now last three or four seasons, then end. Would I have taken another few seasons of “Halt and Catch Fire”? To be sure. But I also don’t feel like it won’t get a chance to play out its story over four seasons and 40 episodes. That’s a good run! Similarly, “Rectify” feels...

Writer-director Robert Conway’s partnership with Uncork’d Entertainment began with his horror film “The Encounter,” about a camping trip gone horribly wrong, and continued with “Krampus: The Reckoning,” about a little girl’s relationship with Krampus, the dark companion of St. Nicholas who punishes “bad children” at Christmastime in horrifying ways. Now, he’s working with Uncork’d again on the Krampus sequel entitled “Krampus Unleashed,” which signals the return of the yuletide monster after a group of fortune hunters mistakenly awaken him after years of being dormant. Aaron Sorkin’s directorial debut, Molly’s Game, has already drawn in a fair amount of high-profile talent, including Idris Elba and Jessica Chastain. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Arrested Development and Scott Pilgrim star Michael Cera might also be signing on for Sorkin’s tale of high-stakes poker among the Hollywood elite.
Sorkin’s film centers on Molly Bloom, a former Olympic hopeful who found herself running some of Los Angeles’ most expensive, and most lavish, underground poker games in the 2000s and early 2010s. Before she was taken down by the FBI in 2013, Bloom allegedly hosted players like Ben Affleck and Leonardo DiCaprio in big-money games, rubbing elbows and playing cards with billionaires looking to lose their money to their favorite stars.

“Hey there, welcome to Comedy Bang! Bang!, we’ve got a great show for you tonight. [Insert celebrity guest’s name] is here, as well as [insert fictional character’s name]. I’m Scott Aukerman.”
Fans of IFC’s Comedy Bang! Bang! will be comforted to hear those words again as the cult talk-show parody and self-proclaimed ironic hipster comedy returns this weekend. With a penchant for pop culture references and conceptual episodes, it is to the talk show what Community was to the sitcom and, like that show, it continues to inspire a devoted following despite consistently low ratings.
The aforementioned lines are how Scott Aukerman, playing a fictionalized talk show host version of himself, follows the opening credits of every show, establishing the framework followed by virtually every episode. First, the bandleader is introduced, then a celebrity guest is brought onto the set to be interviewed and, around halfway through, another guest,...

David Lynch today unveiled the full cast list for his upcoming Showtime Twin Peaks follow-up — and is it a doozy. Two hundred and seventeen actors are credited, with both newcomers and returning thespians. Previously only Kyle MacLachlan had been confirmed as FBI Agent Dale Cooper.
Will Agent Cooper use a smartphone?
Let’s check out some of the more interesting names on the list, shall we?
Michael Cera: The erstwhile Scott Pilgrim has been keeping busy since his breakout role as George Michael Bluth on Arrested Development, but he usually sticks with comedy (Year One, Superbad). It’ll be interesting to see him tackle something so dark.
Will this hair get frizzier in perpetually damp Twin Peaks?
Trent Reznor: The Oscar-winning composer and Nine Inch Nails wizard has only two credits under his belt (aside from three video shorts): a 2000 Swedish thriller called Recycled and the 1987 Michael J. Fox...

Netflix is at it again, reviving much-loved shows that we thought long dead. They did it with Arrested Development, and now they’re giving Gilmore Girls – which went off the air in 2007 - the same treatment.
The online streaming giant has reached a deal with Warner Bros. to produce new episodes, and negotiations with the show’s stars are just beginning.
Although it might be tough to find room in the schedules of Melissa McCarthy (now a Hollywood star in her own right, with the likes of Spy under her belt and Ghostbusters on the way) and Sean Gunn (now in dual roles as both a Ravager and the physical embodiment of Rocket Racoon for his brother’s Guardians Of The Galaxy movies), with any luck, the...

As the ‘Road Dogg’ Jesse James, the one-time Brian Armstrong carved a legacy for himself in WWE history. The man’s real name is actually Brian James, but he’s part of the well-known Armstrong wrestling family. His father, Bob wrestled with the surname, so all 4 of his sons, Brian, Brad, Steve and Scott took on the moniker also. It wasn’t until Road Dogg had been in the industry for over a decade that he got his first major run.
Making his then-wwf debut in 1994 as ‘The Roadie’, the man worked alongside Jeff Jarrett. Acting largely as a manager, he was something also allowed to show what he could do inside the ring. That said, it would be another few years before the Road Dogg character was created. That particular persona gave the wrestler more stature, and he became part of D-Generation X.

Adam Scott: I never want to stay past, like, minute three. Pretty much, right? Ns: We give a hostess gift or a host gift. We cruise around once or twice. Chicago – He’s not a household name, but he has certainly rocked a few houses…with laughter. Writer/director Paul Feig has a new film called “Spy,” in which he re-teams with two of the supporting cast of his “Bridesmaids” romp, Melissa McCarthy and Rose Byrne. “Spy” opens on Friday, June 5th.
“Spy” is a perfect tonic to today’s super serious movies depicting undercover chicanery. McCarthy portrays Susan, a ex-teacher-turned CIA desk jockey, who often is paired with superspy Bradley Fine (Jude Law). When Fine is disposed of, it is up to Susan to complete his international mission, under the disguises of cat lady and unmarried tourist. Like Feig has done in his previous films, “Spy” loves the juxtaposition of having the unlikely Melissa McCarthy as the world’s greatest operative.

The South by Southwest Film Festival is starting up this Friday, and I could not be more excited. This is my fourth year of attending the fest, and each year brings about a couple of films I love. What is also great about SXSW is, unlike Toronto or Cannes, there is plenty of room for discovery. Many films are making their world premieres here from lesser known filmmakers. SXSW also brings together an eclectic assortment of genres for the program, from indie dramas to horror films to science-fiction to you name it. I think going to those aforementioned festivals and just seeing "prestige pictures" continuously could get a bit boring. Sure, SXSW has a higher risk for a terrible movie, but the risk is exciting. Consequently, making a most anticipated list for a festival offering a lot of discoveries seems like a contradiction. But, of course, if you look through the program,...

This emo teen movie has a refreshingly believable heroine in Designated Ugly Fat Friend Bianca, remarkably played by Mae Whitman
The Duff opens with a light jab at The Breakfast Club and concludes with a moment straight out of Pretty in Pink. It’s extremely ambitious, at least as far as emo high school movies are concerned. While its opening is too reliant on a Clarissa Explains It All-like voiceover, and some heavy-handed anti-bullying messaging feels shoehorned, there are stretches in which The Duff soars, nailing scene after funny scene with an honest spirit rarely seen in mainstream teen films. Its lead character, Bianca Piper, is a special breed of dork who is not completely socially inept. She’s one who weathers high school’s dramas with the added burden of self-awareness. It’s a character you really don’t see much in the movies, which is even stranger,...

Bianca (Mae Whitman) is a normal teenager with best friends, a high school crush and a wardrobe filled with overalls and flannels, but her world is shaken when Wesley (Robbie Amell), the captain of the football team, reveals a dirty, little social secret. He says Bianca is the Duff — the designated ugly, fat friend — of her particular circle who’s kept around simply to make her two incredibly hot friends, Casey (Bianca A. Santos) and Jess (Skyler Samuels), seem even more beautiful and special. Her friends deny it, but after a quick online visit to Urban Dictionary confirms this is a real acronym Bianca unfriends the pair in person and across social media. She makes a deal with Wesley after his grades get him suspended from the football team — she’ll help him pass his tests, and he’ll do his best to “un-duff” her so she can land a boyfriend. I...
