White Christmas begone! Australia’s yuletide canon is expanding – and it’s full of small-time crims, dysfunctional families and sweltering summer shenanigans
Do you have a favourite Australian festive flick? Share it in the comments
Early in the new Australian film Christmess – a bittersweet drama about an alcoholic actor trying to turn his life around – one character asks a question familiar to many cinephiles: what’s the best Christmas movie? The protagonist, Steve Le Marquand’s Chris, delivers an answer familiar to anyone who has been on the internet in the past two decades: Die Hard, the damn fine, explosive Bruce Willis classic that has been igniting debate about what exactly constitutes a Christmas movie since yuletides of yore.
If Christmess – a very absorbing film, tenderly written and directed by Heath Davis – were a more banter-prone production, the characters might have waded into the debate themselves. For instance: what’s...

Clara Chong and Philip Quast (Photo credit: John Slaytor).
One of first features to roll during the pandemic, Clara Chong and Ben Allan’s thriller Dark Noise has wrapped after an eventful shoot which spanned 28 days spread in blocks over 12 weeks.
The privately-financed production had to shut down for 48 hours while a team member who had mild symptoms on the Covid-19 list was isolated and tested. It was quickly established the team member had a common cold which did not spread to anyone else.
The producers faced another problem when actress Leah Vandenburg was trapped in Melbourne during the city’s second pandemic wave and could not travel to Sydney. So Maura Fay Casting speedily recast the role, with Renee Lim stepping in.
The producer and Dop, Allan tells If the disruption and Covid Safe protocols increased the budget by just 12 per cent.

‘Escape and Evasion.’
It’s an all too familiar story: Australian films open in a handful of cinemas with minimal marketing and publicity and audiences don’t go because they don’t know where or when these films are playing.
The latest examples are Storm Ashwood’s war thriller Escape and Evasion and Miranda Nation’s debut feature, relationships drama Undertow, which both launched last weekend.
Produced by Bronte Pictures’ Blake Northfield, Escape and Evasion stars Josh McConville as Seth, the sole survivor of a mission gone wrong. Bonnie Sveen is Rebecca, whose brother Josh (Hugh Sheridan) was one of the casualties.
Rebecca confronts Seth, who reports her to his Major (Rena Owen). Firass Dirani plays Welshy, one of four soldiers on the mission, with Steve Le Marquand as Carl, an ex-soldier who lives in Myanmar.

Locusts will screen at The Tivoli Theater (6350 Delmar) Thursday, Nov 14 at 9:30pm as part of this year’s St. Louis International Film Festival.. Ticket information can be found Here
In “Locusts,” a dark thriller set in Australia’s Outback, estranged tech entrepreneur Ryan Black returns to his desert hometown — the ironically named Serenity Crossing — for his father’s funeral. Ryan is reluctantly reunited with his ex-con brother, and the pair soon becomes the target of an extortion scam at the hands of desperate criminal associates of their reprobate dad. The Aussie movie site FilmInk writes: “Boasting a tight and twisting script and stunning imagery, ‘Locusts’ is the kind of film that we don’t see nearly enough of in Australia: a classy crime B-movie in the style of John Dahl or (early) James Foley. Ben Geurens in ‘Locusts.’
Typifying the challenges facing the vast majority of Australian films, Heath Davis’ suspense-drama Locusts and Partho Sen-Gupta’s thriller Slam were released on a handful of screens last weekend.
Working with limited marketing budgets the distributors and producers relied primarily on reviews and publicity, and the weekend figures were commensurately modest.
Ben Geurens and Nathaniel Dean play estranged brothers who are the targets of an extortion racket in Locusts, which grossed $11,000 on 11 screens and $14,000 with previews.
Film Ink Presents is handling the theatrical release of the privately-financed film, which co-stars Jessica McNamee, Steve Le Marquand, Justin Rosniak, Andy McPhee, the late Damian Hill and Alan Dukes, while Jonathan Page’s Bonsai Films will sell the ancillary rights.
“It’s difficult for independent films to secure screens and marketing exposure,” Angus Watts, who produced and wrote Locusts, tells If. “We’re happy with the support from exhibitors...

Hunter Page-Lochard in Les Norton (Photo credit: Tony Mott).
Hunter Page-Lochard has a ready answer when people ask why he speaks with an Ocker accent as Billy Dunne, the former pro boxer turned Kings Cross casino doorman in the ABC’s Les Norton.
While he is proud of his Aboriginal and American heritage, he says: “I don’t want to be labelled as an Indigenous character. I want to fit in the group of the people that I’m appearing with.”
From his first day on the set of the Roadshow Rough Diamond crime caper with Alexander Bertrand, Justin Rosniak and Steve Le Marquand, he sensed this show was going to be special.
“We found our groove and our characters by watching and flowing off each other,” he tells If. “As someone who had never done comedy before, I needed that confidence. Once we got together it was like, ‘Oh my God,...

Alexander Bertrand in ‘Les Norton.’
After landing his first lead role in Roadshow Rough Diamond’s Australian Gangster, Alexander Bertrand set his sights on playing the title character in the same production house’s Les Norton.
That was no sure thing: Despite his performance as the Sydney crime figure in the upcoming Seven Network drama, the actor had to fight hard to win the Norton role in the ABC series based on Robert G. Barrett’s Australian novels set in the 1980s.
“There were five or six people up for the role, including a couple of heavyweight Hollywood names,” he tells If. “I had to do a couple of call backs.”
Jocelyn Moorhouse, who co-directed the 10-part series with Fadia Abboud, David Caesar and Morgan O’Neill, loved Australian Gangster and championed his cause.
“Jocelyn told me she put on the brass knuckles and went into bat for me,” he says.

Writer and director Nick Matthews made his feature debut at this year's Austin Film Festival with One Eyed Girl, a riveting psychological thriller that takes place in South Australia but could just as easily occur anywhere. Co-written by co-star Craig Behenna (The Babadook), this film -- which just won the Aff 2014 jury prize in the "Dark Matters" category -- slowly reveals the layers of pain and guilt experienced by a psychiatrist and the unexpected rocky path to redemption and salvation.
Travis (Mark Leonard Winter) is a thirtysomething psychiatrist severely damaged by the death of former patient Rachel (Katy Cheel). Through a series of flashbacks, we learn that Travis' relationship with Rachel extended beyond and was impacted by her mental health. Travis' inability to connect to his patients and Rachel is compounded by the desensitization to the violence and corruption of the modern world, as well as a refusal to accept his own identity.

Australian producers increasingly are looking to international co-productions as one solution to the difficulty of raising finance at home.
Producers say the .soft. money available for co-pros with Canada and Europe will help to compensate for the very low minimum guarantees offered by Australian distributors.
Another advantage, they say, is the improved chances of securing marquee cast for films shot in part or completely in Canada and Europe.
. With the collapse of distribution windows, online communication, and the competitiveness of getting soft money out of Australia, producers are becoming more savvy in financing their films with global partners especially as we are telling more global, universally themed stories,. says producer Raquelle David, who is developing the futuristic thriller Lucid as a co-pro.

Boilermaker’s new series for Movie Extra Small Time Gangster tries to find a new spin on crime dramedies, for a fraction of the cost of its Us counterparts.
Boilermaker co-founders and producers Andrew McInally and Gareth Calverley know that Small Time Gangster – their first ever full-length television series – will inevitably be compared to other projects about the criminal underworld.
“As a TV writer, you’re always going to be compared to other shows that are out there in the market place. I would absolutely not compare us to The Sopranos; we’re 70 percent drama, 30 percent black comedy, so if I had to compare it to something it would be Breaking Bad… One of the problems is that it takes two years to get a show from the drawing board to the audience and there’s not much we can do about it with comparisons,” said Calverley.

The Hollywood Reporter has some great news about Eclipse vampire, Xavier Samuel. Xavier has just gotten a lead in a new comedy, A Few Best Men. Read more below:
Sydney — After a trio of horror films including Twilight: Eclipse, The Loved Ones and Bait 3D, Xavier Samuel is turning his hand to comedy, signing on for the lead in Stephan Elliott’s latest feature film, A Few Best Men.
Samuel will star as David, the English groom, in the film which Elliot bills as the latest in “a hugely successful emerging genre — wedding movies for boys.” (Think, The Hangover down under.)
In the film David and his three best men travel to the Australian outback for a destination wedding that is as funny as it is disastrous.
“The girls get the big day. The boys get to sabotage it. And boy I am gonna have some fun,” said Elliot, who’s returned to Australia to make his first feature here in over a decade.
Also starring are Olivia Newton-John as the mother of the bride, British actors Kris Marshall and Kevin Bishop and Aussies Laura Brent, Tim Draxl and Steve Le Marquand.

The cast of Stephan Elliott’s A Few Best Men will include Xavier Samuel, Kris Marshall, Kevin Bishop and Olivia Newton-John as the mother of the bride.
“I’m thrilled Olivia Newton-John is part of the cast; Dean Craig has written a fantastically entertaining script, and it’s especially exciting to partner Stephan Elliott with Olivia who is a true music and film icon. Olivia will be playing a role that will show her in a light she’s never been seen before and it’s going to turn heads and win new fans,” said producer Gary Hamilton.
It will be Newton-John’s first Australian film since 1965′s Funny Things Happen Down Under, and her first film since the American independent release Sordid Lives in 2000. One of her latest TV appearances was in the hit show Glee.

All writer Mick Connolly wants for Christmas is a producer:
Last month I won second prize in the Final Draft Big Break Screenplay Competition in L.A. with my comedy Crims, and I’m very keen to hear from producers who’d like to read the script.
In Crims, a small-time crook does a self-improvement course in an effort to win back the love of his estranged straight-laced daughter.
I’ve filmed the first page of the script as a ‘teaser’ in an effort to generate interest in the project. Chris Haywood, Steve Le Marquand and Bob Franklin are among the actors that participated. This one-minute teaser gives a clear indication of the tone of the film and my vision for it.

A new eight-part series, titled Small Time Gangster, is set to be shot entirely on location in Melbourne over seven weeks commencing October 18. Small Time Gangster is a comedy that follows Tony Piccolo, an average Aussie bloke who works hard to support his wife and two kids. His family are under the impression that he's an expert at cleaning carpets, but in reality he's a brutal standover man who takes ‘cleaning' to a whole new level. The series focuses on the often hilarious collision of these two worlds. Tackling the central role of Tony is Steve Le Marquand who was last seen on the big screen in Jeremy Hartley-Sims' epic war story Beneath Hill 60 released earlier this year.
