A New York bankruptcy judge Thursday approved the sale of the iconic Moviefone movie listings service for $1 million as part of the bankruptcy of its parent company Helios & Matheson Analytics.
That oddly-named holding company shot to fame by starting, growing and ultimately badly bungling the MoviePass subscription service, which is next on the auction block.

Discounted-ticket subscription service MoviePass acquired ticket-buying app and website Moviefone in a $23 million deal. “Our subscribers want to know more and more about movies,” said MoviePass CEO Mitch Lowe. “They don’t want to get their recommendations from Rotten Tomatoes, they want to get it from fellow subscribers.”
Founded in 1989, Moviefone began as an automated hotline for callers seeking showtimes. Within several years, the internet rendered 777-film largely obsolete; the phone service was terminated in 2014. Moviefone, which also provides reviews and entertainment news, now receives 6 million unique visitors per month.
According to Thursday’s Securities and Exchange Commission filing, the purchase consists of $1 million cash and less than $8 million in common stock shares, with additional warrants in place from Helios and Matheson Analytics, MoviePass’ parent corporation. It’s a fraction of the $388 million that AOL paid for Moviefone in 1999. AOL is now owned by Verizon, and Moviefone had been housed...

MoviePass is saying “Hello — and welcome to Moviefone!”
Helios and Matheson Analytics, the majority owner of MoviePass, announced the acquisition of Moviefone from Verizon’s Oath subsidiary. Under the terms of the deal, Helios and Matheson is paying Verizon $1 million in cash and granting 2.55 million common shares (worth less than $8 million at Hmny’s current stock price). In addition, Verizon has the option to acquire an additional stake in Helios and Matheson, through warrants to purchase stock worth $14 million (at an exercise price of $5.50 per share), according to a regulatory filing. Verizon’s ownership of Hmny shares is subject to a lockup until April 4, 2019.
However the economics of the deal shake out, it represents a substantial decline in value for Moviefone, the pioneering interactive info service founded in 1989 — and which AOL acquired for $388 million in 1999.

Helios and Matheson Analytics Inc. , the majority owner of MoviePass, has snapped up Moviefone from Verizon’s digital arm Oath in a mixture of undisclosed cash and unregistered equity.
Moviefone, who arguably started the whole notion of advance movie ticket sales with their 777-film phone lines back in the 1990s, is currently an entertainment news portal that also provides showtime information, connecting users to individual chain’s ticket sales pages. Moviefone was started in 1989 by Russ Leatherman (the voice of Mr. Moviefone on their phone lines), Andrew Jarecki, Pat Cardamone, and Adam Slutsky. AOL bought Moviefone in 1999 for $388M and during the millennium Moviefone would link to Movietickets.com then later Fandango to provide consumers with advance tickets. In 2014, Moviefone became a movie info shell as we currently know it. AOL Ventures, which was the venture capital arm of AOL (now, Oath), was an early investor in MoviePass back in 2011.

Sometimes you've just got to tap into your inner jerk.
All right, all right, maybe not in real life, but Bobby Cannavale certainly gets in touch with his bad side in "Annie." Mr. Moviefone sat down with Mr. Cannavale, and the actor admitted he was excited to craft a bad guy that audiences couldn't help but love. Castmate Cameron Diaz had a few things to say about playing another cruel character, Ms. Hannigan, though it didn't take long for "Something About Mary" -- and Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" -- to wiggle their way into the conversation.
"Annie" dances its way into theaters Friday, December 19.

Who do you save, Chris Rock or Kevin Hart?
In preparation for Rock's "Top Five," Mr. Moviefone (Kevin Thompson) asked Gabrielle Union the tough questions. Rock may have technically been Union's boss, but would that be enough for her to save him? After all, Union told Mr. Moviefone that Hart did give a toast at her and Dwayne Wade's wedding. (How cool is that?!).
Then, there was Rosario Dawson. The "Top Five" co-star hilariously explained her wish to do "the Christopher Walken sort of thing" and also be the next Samuel L. Jackson. Yup, she even admitted she'd love to do a speech just before a shark eats her.

Who's in your top five?
To get ready for Chris Rock's highly-anticipated new movie, Mr. Moviefone (Kevin Thompson) caught up with "Top Five" stars Jb Smoove and Ben Vereen. The results were inspiring -- and hilarious -- as Smoove ("Curb Your Enthusiasm") recounted a crazy story about selling fire extinguishers door-to-door in his youth. And that was after he discussed his lasting love for the cult-classic "Pootie Tang." Some fires just don't go out.
Meanwhile, stage actor Ben Vereen ("Pippin"), who plays Chris Rock's father in the film, discussed the importance of always working on your craft as an artist and being "a life threat" and "an artist giver." Wise words from an industry legend.

Ladies and gentlemen, Moviefone has a new voice... and face.
After launching an online search for the next Mr. or Ms. Moviefone back in September, followed by an open casting call in October and weeks of deliberation, Moviefone has finally found the next face of its iconic brand.
Thursday morning, in an exclusive reveal on NBC's "Today" show, Kevin Thompson, a former warm-up man for "The Wendy Williams Show" and current host of Bet's "Claim to Fame" game show, was named the new Mr. Moviefone. And the Brooklyn, NY native couldn't be happier about the new role.
"To be 'The Voice' and 'The Face' of the Moviefone brand brings me immeasurable joy," Thompson says. "Truth be told, I'm just a kid from Brooklyn, trying to make his mother proud. For years, she's told me to shut up; now, I think she's proud I never did."
It truly is a good thing that he never did.

There are precious few people who have a voice perfect for talking about movies. And, as it turns out, Ben Falcone is one of them. Sort of.
During our latest Unscripted for his new movie, "Tammy" (out now), we asked Falcone if he would do his best Mr. Moviefone impression. Now, we didn't expect him to mimic the voice exactly, but what he did instead proved to be better than what we could have imagined.
If the next Mr. Moviefone needs to be low energy, non-threatening, and completely vague, he's our guy.

“See ya later, and thanks for calling Moviefone!” That’s the closing salutation of a call placed to 777-film, the home of Mr. Moviefone for 25 years. Sometime in the “near future,” he’ll say his goodbyes one more time and ride off into the sunset, as the Moviefone call-in line is being shut down once and for all. The decision was handed down from the folks at AOL, who bought the service and brand in 1999 for a staggering $388 million, who will soon reintroduce the Moviefone brand and focus entirely on the service’s app. Unless you grew up a movie-hungry child and teenager in the 1990s, as I did, it’s hard to imagine the days when you had to get movie times out of a newspaper. Harder still to imagine a time when calling a movie theater was not only a thing you could do, but a thing you had to do in order to know...

Source: NBC With Moviefone shutting down its call-in service next month to focus on its more 2014-appropriate app, those of us who once called 777-film on Friday nights are left feeling more than a little nostalgic. Remember using the touchtone keypad to select the first three letters of the movie title? And, really, who could forget that Mr. Moviefone voice? The voice that said, "Hello, and welcome to Moviefone" was that of Russ Leatherman, a founder who left the company this past November, and his robotic voice was so engrained in everyday culture that it made its way onto Seinfeld with Kramer's impersonation. Alas, that's now a scene today's teens will struggle to understand as they turn to one of their apps for movie showtimes. As we say good-bye to Mr. Moviefone, let's relive the glory days of what it was like to call 777-film. View Slideshow ›...

The choice of what movie to see this weekend may be easy for some people: If you like tongue-in-cheek, low-brow comedy then "Grown Ups 2" is for you. If big action is your thing, go see "Pacific Rim."
But, for moviegoers who are indifferent to either genre and just want to be entertained, Moviefone is giving you the lowdown on which new flick is worth your time.
Mr. Moviefone, along with Moviefone writer Drew Taylor, sat down with HuffPost Live host Jacob Soboroff to discuss this weekend's big releases, as well as the smaller, Steve Carrell-starring movie "The Way, Way Back."

Blockbuster director Roland Emmerich ("White House Down," "2012," "Independence Day") is Moviefone's Guest Editor from June 24 - 28. Look for more videos -- and some "White House Down" secrets -- from him throughout the week.
Don't get us wrong, Mr. Moviefone's 6-Second Reviews are great, but one from the film's director? That's pretty cool, too.
Roland Emmerich has three words to say about his latest action movie "White House Down," but we're not going to tell you (you have to watch for yourself). While it may seem hard to cram a review into only six seconds for a movie that features a White House invasion, a sitting president (Jamie Foxx) kicking butt, and tons of explosions, Emmerich sums it all up pretty succinctly.
Check out his 6-Second Review. Are you planning to see "White House Down" this weekend?

This Memorial Day weekend marks the release of two anticipated installments from two very different franchises. The adrenaline-pumping actioner "Fast & Furious 6," and the debauchery-ridden comedy "The Hangover: Part III" will battle it out at the box office, begging the question, "Who will come out on top at the end of the long holiday weekend?" Well, Moviefone may just have your answer. Mr. Moviefone (aka Russ Leatherman) and our (pajama-clad) Editor-in-Chief, Tim Hayne, joined HuffPost Live host Jacob Soboroff to discuss this weekend's contenders, and how they stack up against each other and their respective predecessors. The follow up to J.J. Abram's 2009 "Star Trek" reboot hit theaters yesterday (a day earlier than previously planned) and has been getting both good and not-so-good reviews. If you read what the critics have to say before seeing a movie, you may be confused as to whether "Star Trek Into Darkness" is really worth it. Is it as good as its predecessor? Should it be seen in IMAX 3D? Do Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto continue to do Captain Kirk and Spock justice? If those are the questions consuming your thoughts today, Moviefone has your answers. Mr. Moviefone (aka Russ Leatherman) joined HuffPost Live host Jacob Soboroff to discuss the big sci-fi release. Watch the latest Moviefone Live above to hear what they had to say!

Baz Luhrmann's glitzy, 3D re-imagining of "The Great Gatsby" hits theaters today, and the spectacle has been receiving mixed reviews, mainly targeting the director's emphasis on flash rather than substance. But the hype around the movie is sure to still have most moviegoers curious. So, the question remains, is "Gatsby" worth the 3D price tag? Or is the movie's contemporary soundtrack, combined with its in-your-face imagery just sensory overload? Moviefone has your answer. Mr. Moviefone (aka Russ Leatherman) and our Editor-in-Chief, Tim Hayne, joined HuffPost Live host Jacob Soboroff to discuss whether or not this weekend's glamorous release is worth the hoopla, as well as the newly released trailer for another book-turned-film, "Ender's Game." This weekend marks the summer movie season's big kick-off, and when it comes to deciding what to see, the choice is kind of a no-brainer: "Iron Man 3." But what about the rest of summer? How does Tony Stark stack up against the other big franchise sequels hitting theaters over the next four months? Will "Iron Man 3" raise the bar too high for "Man of Steel," "Fast & Furious 6," and "Star Trek Into Darkness" at the box office? Don't worry, Moviefone is here to help. Mr. Moviefone (aka Russ Leatherman) and our Editor-in-Chief, Tim Hayne, joined HuffPost Live host Jacob Soboroff to discuss this weekend's potential blockbuster release, summer movie predictions, and how "Iron Man 3" stacks up against the competition. Big muscles and big families dominate the box office this weekend. Michael Bay's action/comedy/drama about bodybuilding criminals, "Pain & Gain," is flexing its way into theaters this Friday, as is the rom-com "The Big Wedding." "Big Wedding" is bursting with A-listers, like Robert De Niro, Diane Keaton, and Amanda Seyfried, while "Pain & Gain" is bursting out of its muscle-baring tank top! So, the question is: Which movie will win your hard-earned cash? Moviefone is here to help you decide! Mr. Moviefone (aka Russ Leatherman) and our Editor-in-Chief, Tim Hayne, joined HuffPost Live host Josh Zepps to discuss whether this weekend's releases are big hits or big misses. For many movie-goers, the decision as to what new movie to see this weekend will be simple: "Oblivion." Tom Cruise's latest can be considered a bit of a monopoly at the box office this weekend because it is the only new, wide release hitting theaters. But for those of you who aren't into sci-fi, Cruise, or only-one-man-can-save-the-world action movies, you're in luck: This weekend also marks the wide release of "The Place Beyond the Beyond the Pines," the previously limited released drama starring Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, and Eva Mendes. Now that you know "Oblivion" isn't the only horse in the race this weekend, are you unsure about what to see? Don't worry, Moviefone is here to make it easier. Mr. Moviefone (aka Russ Leatherman) and our Editor-in-Chief, Tim Hayne, joined HuffPost Live host Alyona Minkovski to discuss this weekend's biggest releases, as well as the MPAA's big decision to change its ratings system.

Does Brad Pitt have his eye on Mr. Moviefone's job? Last night at the 2013 MTV Movie Awards, the "World War Z" star gave fans a thrill when he appeared on stage to present the award for Movie of the Year, but it was the very specific way he announced the nominees that caught our attention, and the attention of Envision Radio. The Cleveland radio station pointed out that Mr. Pitt sounded a lot like our very own Mr. Moviefone (aka Russ Leatherman, @6secondreviews) while delivering his lines, and we kind of agree. Watch out, Russ. Pitt is gunning for your gig! Watch the video above (and a recent Six Second Review, below) and judge for yourself.

Will you choose legends, laughs, or high drama this weekend? The movies opening this weekend will satisfy movie-goers with a broad range of interests. "42" tells the real-life story of baseball legend Jackie Robinson, "Scary Movie 5" provides tongue-in-cheek humor for comedy (and horror) fans, and "Disconnect" gives thriller fans a look at Jason Bateman in a dramatic role. With so many options, what's a movie-goer to do? Don't worry, Moviefone has you covered. Mr. Moviefone (aka Russ Leatherman) and our Editor-in-Chief, Tim Hayne, joined HuffPost Live host Jacob Soboroff to discuss this weekend's biggest releases -- and Lindsay Lohan's big appearance at the "Scary Movie 5" premiere.

Dinos or demons, what's it going to be? Two highly-anticipated films hit theaters today: the remastered, 3D-ified classic "Jurassic Park" and the horror reboot "Evil Dead," based on the 1981 cult hit. With movies like these flexing their box office (and nostalgia) muscle, how is it possible to decide which one to spend your money on this weekend? Well, luckily, Mr. Moviefone (aka Russ Leatherman), and Moviefone's Editor-in-Chief, Tim Hayne, appeared on HuffPost Live, along with host Jacob Soboroff, to discuss the weekend's biggest releases and talk about what the death of critic Roger Ebert means for movies.

The Will Ferrell who greeted me at his Upper East Side hotel room this past Saturday was nothing like the bombastic characters he plays in his movies. Nor was he the larger-than-life personality we know from the talk-show circuit. The Will Ferrell I met was the kind of guy who greets you with a smile and a pastry. As we spoke, I came to the conclusion that Will Ferrell is a very insightful and interesting man -- one who happened to be dressed in a powder-blue-and-brown snap-up cowboy shirt better suited for a six-year-old.
Ferrell is promoting his new film, "Casa de Mi Padre." In the film, Ferrell plays a rancher who is unwittingly caught up in the evils of the drug trade after discovering that his brother works for a cartel. Oh, yeah, the movie is almost entirely in Spanish. Purposely presented as a low-budget film with terrible editing,...
