Rocket Science and CAA Media Finance are launching foreign sales out of Cannes for the John Lee Hancock directed Monsanto starring Glen Powell, Anthony Mackie and Oscar winner Laura Dern.
Monsanto tells the true story of young, untried attorney Brent Wisner (Powell) who takes on a seemingly insurmountable case against the giant U.S. chemical company Monsanto on behalf of Dewayne “Lee” Johnson (Mackie) who used Monsanto’s best-known product Roundup, a wildly financially successful weed and grass pesticide killer, as part of his job as a high school groundskeeper. During the trial, Dr Melinda Rogers (Dern), the chief toxicologist of the Monsanto Company, testifies with certainty that Roundup is safe.
Pic’s screenplay was developed in association with Karl Spoerri’s Zurich Avenue and penned by Michael Wisner, Alexandra Duparc, Ned Benson and Hancock. Producers are Moritz Borman, Eric Kopeloff, Philip Schulz-Deyle and Jon Levin alongside HyperObject Industries’ Adam McKay and Kevin Messick.

Glen Powell, Anthony Mackie and Academy Award winner Laura Dern have signed on to star in “Monsanto,” the latest film from writer-director John Lee Hancock.
The film follows the true story of young, untried attorney Brent Wisner (Powell), who in 2019 took on a seemingly insurmountable case against the giant U.S. chemical company Monsanto on behalf of Dewayne “Lee” Johnson (Mackie) who used the company’s best-known product Roundup, a wildly financially successful weed and grass pesticide killer, as part of his job as a high school groundskeeper. Dern plays Dr. Melinda Rogers, the Monsanto Company’s chief toxicologist, who testifies with certainty that Roundup is safe during the landmark cancer trial.
“I was drawn to this contemporary David vs. Goliath true story because I found it dramatic, moving, quite funny and of critical importance in today’s world,” said Hancock. “My ambitions are to deliver a smart, thoughtful and...

A24 has a reputation as one of the coolest indie movie “brands” today.
Through dozens of films, they have established themselves as arbiters of extremely good taste, maintaining relationships with their favorite filmmakers while taking big swings on new talent. They have also shown themselves to be crack marketers of their own product (how many boutique film studios inspire young fans to sweat sweatshirts emblazoned with their logo?)
This brand awareness is quite powerful. Younger filmgoers know an A24 movie when they see them; and they go see movies because the studio is behind them. This knowingness, a contract between the studio and the audience, extends to A24’s horror output, which is even more easily identifiable. “It’s an A24 horror movie,” you’ll say. And whoever you’re talking to will know exactly what you mean. Maybe it’s a little folksy, maybe it’s a little techy,...

A24 is having a moment right now. For starters, the indie studio and 21st century tastemaker is actually able to produce movies during the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes due to its separation from the major Hollywood studios. So bring on that movie where Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega are responsible for killing a unicorn! More impressive though, A24 just picked up its second Best Picture Oscar in six years, and for a movie that walked away with a staggering seven Oscar wins overall in March.
Not bad for a company that’s barely a decade old, and which is still generally regarded in the zeitgeist for putting out strange, and yet often entrancing work. That, indeed, could be used to describe most of their horror output, which has had a bigger hand in shaping the genre in the 2010s than any other studio or production company not named Blumhouse. Feature film “Chaos Walking,” based on the young adult novel of the same name by Patrick Ness, now has its two leads in place, as well as a production timeline. The sci-fi project is set in a world where all living beings can hear each other's thoughts through a stream of consciousness called Noise. Attached to star is Daisy Ridley, who will be seen in the upcoming “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” and “Spider-Man: Homecoming” star Tom Holland, as the two adolescents at the dystopic story's center. On the casting front will be Mindy Marin, whose body of work includes serving as casting director on the films “Nightcrawler,” “Crazy, Stupid, Love,” and the currently-in-production “Mission: Impossible 6.” The flick will shoot this August in Montreal, Canada. No additional casting has been announced at this time. Ness will co-author the big screen adaptation, along with John Lee Hancock ("Snow White and...

Some films keep entertaining us even as the final credits roll. Here are some hidden treats at the end of 16 movies...
We've talked in the past about the current trend for stings at the end of movie credits - we once put together a list of 50 of our favourites. But that's not what this article is about. Instead, inspired by a quite wonderful scene midway through the credits of The Boxtrolls, we've been hunting around for extra goodies that you may have missed in other films. Some of these are just lines of text, others are far more substantial. But also, none of them are new or extended scenes - at least in the strictest sense.
There are inevitable spoilers for one or two things ahead, but we've tried to keep the headers as spoiler-free as possible so you can skip to the next entry if you want to. Let's start with The Boxtrolls,...

London — The Rolling Stones made a triumphant return to the London stage on Sunday night in the first of five concerts to mark the 50th anniversary of their debut as an American-oriented blues band.
They showed no signs of wear and tear – except on their aging, heavily lined faces – as frontman Mick Jagger swaggered and strutted through a stellar two-and-a-half hour show. He looked remarkably trim and fit and was in top vocal form.
The Stones passed the half-century mark in style at the sometimes emotional gig that saw former bassist Bill Wyman and guitar master Mick Taylor join their old mates in front of a packed crowd at London's 02 Arena.
It was the first of five mega-shows to mark the passage of 50 years since the band first appeared in a small London pub determined to pay homage to the masters of American blues.

Looks like Colin Farrell is going from kicking ass in the future to a family-friendly Disney drama. Deadline reports that the Total Recall star is in talks to join Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson in the new Disney film Saving Mr. Banks, which is based on the real-life events surrounding the acquisition of the rights to Mary Poppins.
Directed by The Blind Side helmer John Lee Hooker, the story follows Walt Disney (Hanks) as he attempts to convince British author P.L. Travers (Thompson) to sell him the rights to make her beloved Mary Poppins story into a the classic we all know and love today. Here's the kicker, though: Farrell is going to play Travers' father. Yep, you read that correctly. He's the man who inspired the character of Mr. Banks, the lovable father figure in Mary Poppins.
It's unclear whether he'll appear in flashback form or if the production...

Exclusive: Deadline told you back in February that Tom Hanks was in the mix to play Walt Disney in the John Lee Hancock directed and Kelly Marcel-scripted saga of how Walt Disney waged a 14-year courtship to persuade Australian author P.L. Travers to sell him rights to make a film out of Mary Poppins. Now, things are heating up with Hanks to potentially star with Emma Thompson (Meryl Streep was also being courted) for Disney, which in February made a deal to acquire the Black List script, which is set up with producer Alison Owen of Ruby Films. Disney seems a natural place for the script, considering the studio owns many rights from making the 1964 classic film that starred Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke and David Tomlinson, the latter of whom played Mr. Banks in the film. The heart of this script comes from how close Travers felt to...

Last night, we witnessed some defining moments in the careers of those nominated for Oscars at the 84th Annual Academy Awards. The Blind Side director John Lee Hooker is in talks to join a Disney project called Saving Mr. Banks, which chronicles the behind-the-scenes story of how Walt Disney himself snagged the rights to the book on which the classic Mary Poppins is based. More below! Deadline has the story which also says heavy hitters Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep are being considered for the roles of Walt Disney and Mary Poppins author P.L. Travers, respectively. Although John Lee Hancock stayed pretty quiet in the two years since directing Sandra Bullock to an Oscar win, a sign of his reemergence came last month with the news of a James Patterson adaptation — one that was putting off a pending cop drama, no less.
I think I understood the way cineastes felt upon Malick‘s return in the late ’90s.
That other film might get pushed back, too, in favor of a trip to the mouse house. According to Deadline, Hancock is negotiating with Disney for Saving Mr. Banks, a Kelly Marcel-scripted true-life story entailing Walt Disney‘s acquisition of the Mary Poppins story. How do you make that a movie? Well, a long and difficult 14-year attempt on Disney’s part to earn the rights to P.L. Travers‘ source material is a good start. Good enough to end up on the Black List, even.

This year, filming finally began on director Tim Burton's long-in-the-works big-screen adaptation of "Dark Shadows," a campy, late-1960s soap opera about vampires, witches and time travel. Burton is a lifelong fan of the series and, as his partner Helena Bonham Carter told MTV News this month, "This was a thing that he raced home to see when he was about age 10."
With its atmospheric New England setting and myriad mysterious characters, "Shadows" has the feel of a classic Burton film, more akin to his "Sleepy Hollow" and "Batman" flicks than his more candy-colored efforts like "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." Angelina Jolie sat down with ABC host Christiane Amanpour this week to discuss her directorial debut, "In the Land of Blood and Honey," the Bosnian war that inspired the film and her humanitarian work with the Un.
But of course, no interview with Jolie would be complete without a question about her relationship with Brad Pitt. When Amanpour asked the actress-turned-director if she would ever get married, Jolie dodged the question: "Once you have six children, you're committed," she said. "The kids asked me [about marriage] the other day and I asked them if it was just because they wanted to have a big cake."
In previous interviews, Pitt has said that he and Jolie may consider tying the knot when all couples -- gay and straight -- can marry: "We'll get married when everyone can," he told Parade in September.

“NYSE.com appeared to slow down and perhaps go offline briefly between 3:35pm and 3:37pm, media reports said, but there was no interruption to trading on the stock exchange and the public website immediately returned to normal.”
Anonymous had warned earlier that its attack would come at 3:30pm on October 10.
With this news it made us wonder what some of our favorite Hacker themed films were of all-time. This is below is compiled around films that center around hacking, hackers doing something disruptive. There is a lot of films that feature “hacking” as a sub-plot but they didn’t warrant tons of consideration as these films did.

We got our first photos from the set of Tim Burton’s next film, Dark Shadows, last month and they gave us a brief glimpse at Johnny Depp’s return to the gothic world of Burton’s mind as Barnabas Collins, an eighteenth century man-turned-vampire dug up in 1972.
The first official photos from the film have now surfaced over at Empire, and they give us an interesting look not just at Depp’s character, who in fact looks rather different from the set photos, but also show us the rest of the cast looking fantastic in their costumes too.
The film, based on the 1960s TV series of the same name, revolves around Depp’s character, Barnabas:
“In 1752, the Collins family sails from Liverpool, England to North America. The son, Barnabas, grows up to be a wealthy playboy in Collinsport, Maine and is the master of Collinwood Manor. He breaks the heart of a witch,...

After the backlash to the first few photos released from the set of "Dark Shadows," it seems as though the team behind the project is doing their best to reclaim skeptics of the film. First Entertainment Weekly released a spread that showed Johnny Depp and the rest of the cast in full "Dark Shadows" regalia, and now Empire magazine has a acquired a couple behind-the-scenes photos that show that the earlier images of the movie that received such a negative response are not a good representation of the film as a whole.
Noticeably lacking from both sets of new photos is the now-staple Tim Burton-style make-up that was the focus of much of the criticism directed at the first few set pictures. That representation of Depp's Barnabas Collins looked better suited for "Edward Scissorhands" or "Alice in Wonderland" instead of this remake of the beloved cult 60s television show.

Dark Shadows has been in production since May and details about the quirky, vampire film have been trickling in. Last week, we got our first official look at the impressive cast looking rather morose in standard Tim Burton fare, and today Empire has released a few photos from behind the scenes as well as some fresh details about the story. In the rather cool new images, we get to see Burton and frequent collaborator Johnny Depp hard at work getting bloody for a scene. The director can also be seen spending time with Crash Override himself Johnny Lee Miller, and Michelle Pfeiffer who may or may not be an actual vampire, because how else can you explain her looking as good at 53 as she did 30 years ago? Dark Shadows will follow Barnabas Collins (Depp), a vampire who has been buried for over 200 years trying to integrate with his family in...

In a swift bit of damage control (if you didn't see the leaked photo of Johnny Depp, well, good for you), Warner Bros. have released the first still from Tim Burton's upcoming campy horror, Dark Shadows. Based on the original Television show, the plot sees Barnabus Collins (Depp), a young wealthy playboy in Collinwood Manor in 1752, who is turned into a vampire by a scorned lover and buried alive. He awakes is 1972 to find the Collinwood estate in turmoil as a strange and secretive family have taken over. In the photo you can see Depp as well as co-stars Chloe Moretz, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jackie Earle Haley, Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Lee Miller. I'm not blown away by the image, but it does inspire hope that this will be more Sleepy Hollow than Alice In Wonderland. Via EW.

Is this a new version of The Munsters or a remake of The Addams Family? No it’s the latest kooky and strange Tim Burton movie, the currently filming Dark Shadows that has an official first look reveal over at Entertainment Weekly.
It also gives us a much better look at the film than those rather worrisome set photos of Johnny Depp that surfaced a month ago which made him look like a pale faced Michael Jackson. The image above makes him resemble the classic Universal horror actor Lon Chaney.
The image itself gives us only a hint at the Gothicness that will be on display when the film opens next May and it’s rather surprisingly tame at first glance compared to his recent efforts but the Burtoness is still very evident in the physical appearance of Helena Bonham Carter with her over the top hairstyle again making her...

Wanna see what Johnny Depp looks like as a vampire? Or I suppose what he could look like in a biopic of Michael Jackson (wait… he already did that in Charlie & The Chocolate Factory right?).
Celebuzz managed to take these snaps of Tim Burton’s muse in full make-up and costume as the fanged Barnabas Collins on the Devon, UK set of the currently filming Dark Shadows, Warner Bros adaptation of the 60′s supernatural ABC daily serial of the same name.
It centers on the tortured vampire who is searching for his long lost love. He is owner of a large estate… but our lead character and entry vehicle into this weird world is Bella Heathcote as Victoria Winters, the young lady who becomes the Governess of the Collins household because she resemblances the vampire’s long lost love.

Trainspotting
Directed by: Danny Boyle
Cast: Ewan McGregor, Robert Carlyle, Johnny Lee Miller
Running Time: 1 hr 35 min
Rating: R
Due Out: September 13, 2011
Plot: A group of heroin addicts in Edinburgh have a grand old time. That is, until things start going bad. Renton (McGregor) wants to get off the “skag” and move on with his life. But it becomes clear that his friends won’t let that happen.
Who’S It For? Anyone who likes movies… and has a strong stomach. There’s some gross stuff in this movie.
Movie:
I’m not sure that I’ve seen this movie since it was in the theater. I actually saw it opening night at Cinema 21. Trainspotting was a really exciting movie when it came out; it was about young, cool people and featured great music. Stylistically, it’s constantly demanding your attention, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have an emotional core.

Thoughts by Tsr: Back in the early ’90s, I watched the TV remake of Dark Shadows and fell in love with Barnabas Collins. Depp should have a very easy time filling the role of the broody vampire. I’m just wondering what direction they’ll take the film in. The article mentions the film is scripted by Seth Grahame-Smith, best known for the novels Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. I’m really hoping Burton goes kind of tongue in cheek, more in the vein of Ed Wood or Beetlejuice than his more recent, more serious films like Sweeney Todd.

Dark Shadows has been in the works for nearly four years, getting the initial push towards the big screen by long-time fan of the series Johnny Depp. Since then, it.s been a slow but steady crawl towards production and now the film has finally started shooting in the U.K. with director Tim Burton, who has been attached to the vampire soap opera adaptation since late 2008. The cast is already packed with talent, but according to THR, three more big names have been added to round out the team. Johnny Lee Miller, who recently starred as a big bad serial killer in Dexter, or as I like to call him .Crash Override., has joined up as Roger Collins, who is turned into a vampire by Depp.s Barnabas Collins, his own cousin. Also signed on is the much older than her years Chloe Grace Moretz (Let Me In, Kick-Ass...

Michelle Pfeiffer sightings are so rare that we must share each and every one of them. The Power of Pfandom Compels Us. She arrived in Lax two days ago so these pap' shots cropped up. Where was she coming from?
She's got her passport so my guess is a break from Dark Shadows (2012) filming in London? Or maybe she's done already. You never know.
The latest from Tim Burton is an adaptation of the cult favorite soap opera about the matriarch of a troubled family (Michelle Pfeiffer) on a crumbling creepy estate. Her centuries-old vampire relative returns (Johnny Depp). Jude Law bestie/Angelina Jolie ex Johnny Lee Miller plays Pfeiffer's brother and the ubiquitous Chloe Moretz her rebellious daughter. Most promisingly, Helena Bonham Carter plays her live in psychiatrist. A live in psychiatrist! Oh the thrilling actressy neuroses that portends.

It's hard to imagine that Naomie Harris, a stunning, confident actress who's now in the running to play the next Bond girl, was once a self-confessed nerd.
"I was always a nerd and a bookworm at school - I worked a bit too hard," she says with a wry smile.
The work paid off though. At 34, Harris is grounded and intelligent, with a degree from Cambridge University to her name and a bright acting future.
Playing a sexy sidekick in a James Bond movie used to be considered career suicide but these days they're stronger parts for feisty actresses, including Gemma Arterton and Eva Green, who go on to greater success.
Harris, who came to fame in the 2002 TV adaptation of Zadie Smith's White Teeth, before being almost unrecognisable as a voodoo priestess in two Pirates Of The Caribbean films, confirmed she is in the running for the role...

Tim Burton is currently working on his follow up to inexplicable billion dollar success Alice In Wonderland, an adaptation of the 1970s tv show, Dark Shadows. Here, Burton tackles vampires in suburbia, but there's a strong chance it'll be more Classic Burton than Desperate Twilightwives. Why so? Well, the setting is right up his street, and the cast he has assembled is fantastic. Alongside the standard Depp & Bonham-Carter casting we'll be seeing Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green, Jackie Earl-Haley, Chloe Moretz and Johnny Lee Miller all on screen. Great stuff, and now we have a proper synopsis that isn't really that spoilery, via /film. In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp...

Colin Hanks has landed a recurring role on the sixth season of Showtime's "Dexter" reports TV Line.
Hanks will play Travis, described as a "highly intelligent young expert on ancient artifacts who gets linked to a series of grisly murders in Miami."
Julia Stiles, Johnny Lee Miller, Peter Weller and Maria Doyle Kennedy had recurring roles last year. This season there are three further recurring characters introduced - a young Latina grad student, the new lab intern and buddy of Masuka, and a no-bs African-American homicide detective.
Meanwhile, Showtime has released a new teaser promo for the season which essentially gives away the biggest spoilers of the show's first four years (oddly there's no mention of the events of the fifth).

Filmmakers taking time outs from the movie world to try their hand at directing for the stage is a pretty common practice, but there is absolutely nothing ordinary about Danny Boyle's "Frankenstein," an adventurous take on the familiar story in nearly every facet of its production. Starring Johnny Lee Miller (Boyle’s “Trainspotting”) and Benedict Cumberbatch (”Atonement,” the BBC’s “Sherlock”), the stageplay features an interesting twist: Miller and Cumberbatch will switch roles from night to night so one evening you can catch Dr. Frankenstein played by Cumberbatch and the Monster by Miller, and then (if you can snag tickets or head…...

Danny Boyle's role-swapping production highlights the incestuous relationship between genius and madness. But which was the show itself?
If the critics' advice should ever be followed, and if you can get a ticket, then Frankenstein at the National is clearly the place to be. There was always going to be hype around any production that could promise Danny Boyle's return to the theatre, the presence of telly's Benedict Cumberbatch and American telly's Johnny Lee Miller, plus an original score from Underworld. (That's a three-way Trainspotting reunion, 90s fans.) What is never guaranteed is a good reaction from the reviewers. Let alone the kind of ecstasy that Frankenstein provoked.
"The opening 10 minutes are stunning," says Henry Hitchings in the Standard, setting the scene. "They are as atmospheric as theatre ever gets. When the naked Creature emerges from a papery womb, he writhes spectacularly. Slowly he adjusts to his surroundings,...

The National Theater Live is bringing a broadcast of Danny Boyle‘s hit stage version of Frankenstein to the United States in cinemas on March 17 and March 24. The play stars Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock Holmes in the British TV series Sherlock) and Johnny Lee Miller (Trainspotting), who switch between the roles of Doctor Frankenstein and the Monster each night. The idea is to show the “double personality-like” nature of Frankenstein and his monster as presented in Shelley’s novel .
Boyle will have 2 camera rehearsals, with up to 8 cameras recording the play on the night. Danny Boyle's stage version of Frankenstein has been doing great business in London, and will soon have performances broadcast to cinema screens [1] on March 17 and March 24. The play stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Johnny Lee Miller, who switch between the roles of Doctor Frankenstein and the Monster each night. Here's a trailer for the production which is a bit editing heavy, as it overlays each man's performance over the other. But you can still see glimmers of what each actor offers in both roles. In addition, we've got a list of Us theaters that will show the March 17 broadcast, after the break. Conforming with the reviews we've read and heard of the production, Benedict Cumberbatch's work seems stronger, even in this very brief clip. But I want to give Johnny Lee Miller a chance, and I'd catch the production in a shot, given the chance. The list of Us...

Danny Boyle’s much hyped stage production of Frankenstein begins at the National Theatre in London next Tuesday (though it’s previewing now) and will continue through March, starring Johnny Lee Miller (Trainspotting) and Benedict Cumberbatch (BBC’s Sherlock) in the lead roles. The real selling point of the play, I’m told, is that Miller and Cumberbatch have both prepared performances as both Frankenstein and his monster – and depending on which night you attend, will determine which performance you see.
A pretty neat gimmick and one that will no doubt get a few people buying multiple tickets to see how both performances compare. Here’s a newly released and compelling trailer for the production;
