Pat Shand is a prolific writer and editor of comics and prose novels. In the past year, Pat launched his own publishing arm, Space Between Entertainment, to launch new graphic novel series including Destiny, NY which had a successful Kickstarter for its first volume last fall.
With the Kickstarter for Destiny, NY Volume 2 just one month away, I talked with Pat Shand about this new volume, running a publishing arm and using crowdfunding to make it all happen.
Jc: The first volume of Destiny, NY wraps up nicely with a pretty happy ending. Can you tell us a bit about where the story is going in Volume Two? Any new characters or developments people can look forward to seeing unfold?
Ps: With the first volume, we introduced this world where magic is a real and accepted part of everyday life. It’s mundane, to an extent. Logan is our lead character,...

Back on November 3rd, a much more innocent time, Pat Shand’s Kickstarter campaign for his graphic novel Destiny – NY Volume One: Who I Used To Be was successfully funded. This past Saturday I received my hard copy of the book in the mail and it’s got my name printed in it as a backer and everything! Since I already read Destiny – NY I figured talking about this book and reviewing it would make for a good column this week. If you keep reading past this point, I’ll assume you agree with me.
For those of you who don’t know Pat Shand, he is a writer and an editor with hundreds of comics under his belt as well as multiple novels. Most of his work is over at Zenescope which Pat recently left to focus more on running his new publishing arm, Continuity Entertainment. The first volume of Destiny,...

Deadline is reporting that Warrior, a television show detailing the Tong Wars in 19th Century San Francisco and based on ideas from the legendary Bruce Lee, has gotten a green light from Cinemax for a ten episode straight to series order. The show is executive produced by Jonathan Tropper, Justin Lin, Danielle Woodrow, and Shannon Lee.
Bruce Lee is a legend. Enter The Dragon, for my money, will go down as one of the greatest action movies ever made. The fact that movies like John Wick Chapter 2 are still taking cues from work that Bruce created over 40 years ago speaks volumes for how far ahead of his time Bruce Lee actually was.
What I love about Bruce Lee's work most of all is how grounded it is. He wanted his work to visually look realistic. While you can appreciate movies like The Matrix and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon for...

We live in the golden age of television, where complex longterm plotting meets stunning visuals and iconic performances. Some days it feels like you can’t move for genre-defined iconic must-watch dramas. But you know what the golden age of TV generally can’t do well? People punching each other in the face and doing awesome martial arts kicks.
Sure, Daredevil had its moments, particularly in season 1, but the second season was a real letdown. Then Iron Fist managed to make a supernaturally powered martial arts dragon dude spectacularly boring. But Cinemax are hoping to produce the first genuinely great martial arts TV show. It’s called Warrior and it originates from the notebooks of Bruce freakin’ Lee. You just don’t get a better martial arts pedigree than that. Apparently, the idea for the series was discovered in Lee’s handwritten notes long after his death, with his daughter...

The officially authorized Bruce Lee biopic has found a director, with Variety reporting that Shekhar Kapur is set to direct the movie about the martial arts icon. Kapur is the director behind Elizabeth, its 2007 sequel, and one of the shorts in the New York, I Love You anthology, and in a statement he says he wants modern audiences to “relate their own lives to the journey of Bruce Lee,” specifically in the way he was able to “tap into his inner wisdom and harness his true destiny” before his death.
The movie—currently titled Little Dragon—has the full support of Lee’s daughter Shannon Lee and the Bruce Lee Entertainment company she runs, with Variety saying that it will be a “contemporary dramatization of the 1950s Hong Kong social and political forces” that made Lee into the man he became. Fast & Furious director Justin Lin is developing Warrior, a TV show based on the writings of Bruce Lee…
Here’s an interesting one – Justin Lin, of Fast & Farious, Fast & Furious 5 and Fast & Furious 6 (as well as Tokyo Drift, and occasionally Community) fame, is working on a TV series based on an original idea from Bruce Lee.
American premium cable channel Cinemax are attached to the idea, which is described as a ‘passion project’ for Lin. We’re told that Lin may direct the pilot episode. Jonathan Tropper (co-creator of Banshee, a decent hit for Cinemax) has written said pilot.
The show – dubbed Warrior – has been inspired by Bruce Lee’s writings. We’re told that Bruce Lee spent ‘many years’ working on the idea before this death in 1973.

Cinemax is currently a step below premium competitors HBO and Showtime in terms of its original programming, but the network formerly dubbed Skinemax has admittedly carved out a nice little niche for itself with action-heavy thriller-dramas like Strike Back, Banshee and Hunted. Its next original series, though, may push Cinemax to a level of quality it hasn’t explored previously. Warrior, which the network put into development today, is a crime drama with some big names behind it, including Fast & Furious helmer Justin Lin and martial arts icon Bruce Lee.
Inspired by the writings of the late Enter the Dragon star, Warrior will follow a gifted but morally compromised fighter whose enduring quest for vengeance against those who have wronged him is undermined by a startling discovery that forces him to reconsider his path. Lin is attached to exec-produce and also direct the pilot, as he did previously for CBS...

Bruce Lee's daughter is working on a new biopic of the action star and martial artist.
Shannon Lee aims to make a film that captures her father's "philosophies and artistry", something that she claims previous biopics have lacked.
As The Guardian reports, Lee is developing the movie in collaboration with Bruce Lee Entertainment and producer Lawrence Grey.
"There have been projects out there involving my father but they've lacked a complete understanding of his philosophies and artistry," said Shannon.
"They haven't captured the essence of his beliefs in martial arts or storytelling. The only way to get audiences to understand the depth and uniqueness of my father is to generate our own material."
Grey said of the martial arts icon: "In this age of an increasingly globalised culture, I can't think of a more talented and innovative individual who embodies the best of east and west and who can inspire future generations.

Whenever we talk about action, stunt work, or martial arts in a modern context, the name Bruce Lee is one that always tends to come up. The talent and effort that he put into his performances was always something to admire, be it in such films as Enter The Dragon, The Way Of The Dragon, or even in the television version of The Green Hornet that inspired the 2011 adaptation. Yet despite his impressive legacy, there's never been an official film detailing the life and times of the legendary performer. At least, that was the case until today's announcement that his family is seeking to tell the full story of Bruce Lee's extraordinary life. Collider ran a press release naming Shannon Lee, Bruce's daughter, as a producer on the still developing project. Lawrence Grey and Janet Yang, of Leaving Las Vegas and The People vs. Larry Flynt fame . respectively, will...

Bruce Lee Enterprises CEO Shannon Lee is teaming with producers Lawrence Grey and Janet Yang for a biopic about Shannon's father and martial arts icon Bruce Lee.
The project will mark the first biopic to be made with the full cooperation of Bruce Lee's family, the previous 1993 biopic "Dragon" was based on a book by Lee's widow.
Shannon Lee says the previous films have lacked a complete understanding of her father's philosophies, artistry and beliefs. As a result, they're generating their own material that hopes to dive into more depth about the man than ever before.
Though dying at just 32, Bruce Lee helped to create and popularize martial arts action films around the world - a genre that's still popular today.
Ben Everard will also produce the new film which is one of a number of film and television projects in development from Bruce Lee Entertainment.

If you watched the Oscars Sunday night, you may have wondered what that movie was, nominated in two categories – Best Costume, and Best Cinematography – that you hadn’t heard of..…The Grandmaster. It won neither award but you’ll have the chance to catch up with this Chinese martial arts epic when it gets a Blu-ray release March 4th.
The Grandmaster is the story of Ip Man, the Wing Chun martial-arts legend who trained Bruce Lee, and it was directed by the acclaimed Wong Kar-wai. There has never been a more visually stunning kung fu movie than The Grandmaster. It’s a true feast for the eyes with its rigorously choreographed fight scenes captured in slow motion and bathed in golden light, in silvery curtains of rain, and snow-swept landscapes. The porcelain-like faces of the women, palatial brothels, bustling saloons, forests and shoreline are rendered like paintings. Then there are the martial arts.

It looks like Barbie's been reading "Fifty Shades of Grey."
A sexually explicit window display featuring Barbie and Ken in Bdsm poses is turning heads in a suburb of Ottawa, Canada, this week, the Ottawa Sun reports.
Mel Lockhart, store manager for Wicked Wanda's Adult Emporium, said she and her staff posed the iconic dolls in scenes inspired by E.L. James' best-selling erotic trilogy.
The salacious saga -- with its wealthy bachelor, virginal ingenue and Bdsm themes -- has inspired a host of products, including a cookbook, a music album, makeup, jewelry, and, of course, sex toys. The series' overtly sexual content has even caught the attention of Christian conservative Pat Robertson.
In the case of the Wicked Wanda dispay, Ken and Barbie, while never actually displayed in their full, nude plastic glory, are shown engaged in whipping, bondage and oral and anal sex. It as, according to the Ottawa Sun's Denis Armstrong,...

Catch up with the last seven days in the world of film
The big story
As anticipation mounted, it was last week's big story; now it's here it's this week's too; and more than likely it'll be next week's as the dust settles. The Dark Knight Rises is the third and last of Christopher Nolan's Batman films: whatever the verdict from our critics, the level of interest it's sparking is astonishing. Today – 19 July – we had a Beatles 64 moment: the five most popular stories on guardian.co.uk/film were Dkr related.
But fanaticism is one thing, abuse is another, as aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes has discovered. It was forced to ban a prankster's negative review, and then shut down the Dkr comments thread entirely.
Some of this might have been anticipated: perhaps what hasn't is the unlikely scent of political controversy surrounding the film. Our writer Catherine Shoard suggested...

I often wonder what the movie world would be like if Bruce Lee were still around. He left us with a handful of awesome films but after a usual Lee movie marathon, I'm left wanting more. I've seen several documentaries on Lee and a few months ago heard about one that his daughter, Shannon Lee and his wife, Linda Lee Cadwell were helping out on. Finally a trailer has debuted for it. While I don't really give two craps about what one of the members of The Black Eyed Peas has to say about it,...

British gothic-rock team Alexa de Strange may not be so well known outside London's club underground yet, but fans of moody, dark pop with a kinky horror angle should probably start paying attention. They recorded their first single "Babydoll" earlier this year, and recently premiered a video that's sexy, creepy and just a little bit on the gory side. Watch the clip and learn more about the band after the jump... Not too long ago, the duo of Francesca Santamaria and Shannon Lee invited several other like-minded artists to come and play in their wicked sandbox, resulting in a constantly revolving musical lineup they dubbed "The Sisters of Seduction." After a brief run as a live act, they regrouped and set...

Today Shannon Lee discusses 2nd Generation Student Chris Kent and his article on Jeet Kune Do entitled “Understanding the True Nature of Jkd”
We need to get one thing clear at the outset. There is no universally-accepted definition of “Jeet Kune Do.” Saying “Jkd is Bruce Lee’s martial art” is merely a statement, not a definition. Saying Jkd is “Bruce Lee’s own personal expression of martial art” is even more confusing, because if that is the case, no one else could do it except Bruce Lee himself. Calling Jeet Kune Do an ‘idea’ or a ‘concept’ is nebulous and does nothing to help an individual understand the art. Having said this, I cautiously offer the reader my personal definition of Jeet Kune Do.

Recently I got a chance to talk with BruceLee.com’s very own Shannon Lee about her current projects, the future of the Bruce Lee name and what you can do to help out!
I imagine it gets quite busy at Bruce Lee Enterprises. What is a typical day at the office for you?
Shannon Lee: Gosh, you know it varies. I have for me in particular three entities that I’m involved in. ‘Bruce Lee Enterprises’ is our licensing company, and for that I have a staff that helps out and we meet with potential licensees and current licensees. We do deals [for use of] my father’s name and likeness for all sorts of different uses like products, production, advertising, promotion and all those sorts of things. So we’re constantly meeting and talking to people, reviewing samples that people send and growing that portion of the business!

Shannon Lee gives Fast Company the scoop on where the $500,000 will go.
University of Chicago Anthropology professor Shannon Lee Dawdy's portfolio is part Pirates of the Caribbean, part voodoo how-to. She spends her days researching and restoring buildings such as 18th century churches from the French colonial era, and she talks to New Orleans residents about topics as diverse as food, urban planning, archaeology, history, and religion. With writing that typically focuses on educational institutions and field work that bleeds into community involvement, her work is a reminder that innovation and academia can overlap.
She stands out for her hybrid academic-advocacy role (whether she likes it or not). "I don't think of myself as an advocate," she says. "Perhaps it's just that I'm not shy about sharing my opinions, and I have a strong pragmatic streak that makes me want to see a portion of my research result in something useful.

Today saw the announcement of this year’s MacArthur Foundation “genius”-grant winners. Each of the 23 recipients, including The Wire creator David Simon, theater director David Cromer, jazz virtuoso Jason Moran, and New Orleans anthropologist Shannon Lee Dawdy—will receive $500,000. Some of the geniuses, as one might expect from members of a traditionally thoughtful demographic, have already begun formulating clever ways to spend their winnings. “I have already begun making minor plans on band expeditions to Senegal to study Senegalese drumming, or bringing our music down to perform in rural parts of America,” said Moran, the musician. Dawdy, the New Orleans scholar, told that A.P. that she plans to “work with the local community to preserve living traditions,” such as Holt Cemetery, that may have been damaged by Katrina. According to the Associated Press, “[t]he money, paid quarterly over five years, comes with no strings, allowing winners unfettered freedom to pursue their creativity.

The Expendables may have boasted a stellar line-up of 80s action stars, but that doesn’t mean we can’t hope for even more of them in its sequel. Here are Ron’s suggestions…
The Expendables isn't out just yet as I write this, but I have no doubt that it's going to be a huge hit. Well, okay, maybe it won't be a huge hit, but like Sly Stallone's return to his Rambo roots, it's going to do really well.
I mean, it's basically every major action movie star (and some minor action movie stars) from the 80s all in the same film. However, there were some shameful omissions that can be added to the mix for The Expendables 2.
I'm not talking about high profile omissions, like Jean-Claude Van Damme or Steven Crotchkicker Seagal, though those guys would be awesome to have in The Expendables universe. I'm talking about...
