Hulu’s “We Were the Lucky Ones,” based on the book by Georgia Hunter, tells the true story of the Kurcs, a Jewish family who lived in Poland at the onset of World War II. The series follows the Kurcs as the events of the war and the Holocaust separate parents and children, tearing families apart.
As casting director Fiona Weir read the script for the first episode, showrunner Erica Lipez stressed that despite the grim setting, it ultimately was a celebratory story — and it was important she get the family dynamics right.
Speaking with Variety, Weir says Hunter, who based the book on her family experiences, turned out to be her most valuable source. “These were real people that she either knew or discovered, so there was lots to talk about in who these people were. And then, we had to create a group that organically felt like a family,...

We Were the Lucky Ones – (Logan Lerman), shown. (Photo by: Vlad Cioplea/Hulu) As antisemitism surges alarmingly, Hulu’s miniseries We Were the Lucky Ones arrives at a crucial moment. Based on Georgia Hunter’s novel, it follows a Jewish family scattered across Europe during World War II, their unwavering determination to survive and reunite echoing the struggles against hate we face today. Star Logan Lerman emphasizes the importance of sharing stories like this, especially in a world where history seems dangerously close to repeating itself. He was drawn to the project’s unique perspective. Elisabeth Moss put in two of the year's best - and diverse - performances in 2020, that of an abused wife in The Invisible Man and here, as writer Shirley Jackson, entrenched in a very different type of emotional warfare with her husband. Director Josephine Decker and screenwriter Sarah Gubbins take their lead from Susan Scarf Merrell's source book Shirley: A Novel, which blends factual detail with a fictional framework to present a psychodrama snapshot of the horror writer's life. Set at the height of Jackson's fame, the story revolves around the arrival to the home she shares with her husband Stanley (Michael Stuhlbarg) of a young couple (Odessa Young and Logan Lerman) building a disturbing atmosphere that draws on the sexual politics of the period as well as Jackson's own life to immerse us in the gripping power play of the house.

Hulu’s acclaimed new limited series “We Were the Lucky Ones” is led by Logan Lerman. who give the best performance of his career. Adapted from Georgia Hunter‘s 2017 book of the same, the story follows the Kurcs, a Polish Jewish family torn apart by WWII. It’s a difficult watch but creator Erica Lipez has crafted a gripping, vital narrative with Lerman at the center of the show. He plays Addy Kurc, the middle child who pursues a career as a composer in post-war Paris. Critics agree, Lerman is a revelation in this role.
Proma Khosla (Indie Wire) stated: “As Addy, Lerman is siloed from the other siblings for almost the entire series, but never waivers in his portrayal of someone sustained by hope and eventually in the haze of grief.”
Maggie Levitt (Collider) observed: “Lerman is another clear standout in the series, though his performance is more subtle...

When is We Were the Lucky Ones Episode 8 coming on Hulu? If you are waiting for the next episode of the series you have come to the right place.
Hulu has an excellent Holocaust drama ‘We Were the Lucky Ones’ which is based on Georgia Hunter’s bestselling of the same name – the plot is incredibly expansive.
When we say ‘expansive’, we mean there are a Ton of characters. Similarly, the limited series also covers a heavy terrain in Poland, where the Kurc family is based.
We’re breaking it down episode after episode – because each one is a masterpiece.
Synopsis of the series
The limited series has an incredible cast, we know that. This genre cast can bring the series to life, as it follows the tight-knit members of the Kurc family as they struggle with their lives after the Nazi invasion in Poland perpetually alters it – and the subsequent emergence of WWII.

We Were the Lucky Ones is a harrowing tale based on a true story about a Jewish family who is trying to find their way back to one another after being separated during the Holocaust.
Because the series follows one family, it has a more “intimate lens” into the Holocaust, giving showrunner Erica Lipez an opportunity to depict a story of that period in history “that people haven’t seen before” — including fewer depictions of violence.
“I have pretty strong feelings about gratuitous violence and I think it’s actually sometimes evoking violence without seeing it can be just as scary,” she said during the show’s Deadline Contenders TV Panel on Saturday. “Particularly in the early episodes, when the violence isn’t happening to the family, but it is starting to escalate around them and that danger is coming — your relationship to violence is people don’t usually just...

As of Episode 4, “We Were the Lucky Ones” is still in the midst of the Nazi domination of Europe. But the Hulu limited series has already displayed a preference for swerving away from the expected tropes of the period. It’s telling a World War II saga that features no battlefields and a chronicle of Jewish resistance that is more about forging and smuggling than about killing Nazis.
“We Were the Lucky Ones” is all the better for showing the audience new kinds of hardships and new avenues for survival, too. It shines when dramatic moments feel specific to the Kurcs, the Polish Jewish family the show follows as the war scatters them across Europe and even further afield, as opposed to the kinds of war imagery that, given the number of WWII dramas each year, can appear standard issue.

Gerard Butler has had a varied career so far, with him playing everything from action leads to rom-com love interests to a singing Phantom of the Opera. But, it has to be said that his most consistently entertaining output falls squarely into the action genre, and as far as Gerard Butler movies go, the action films will always be our favorites… so don’t expect to see The Ugly Truth on this list, but The Bounty Hunter might scrape by. Or maybe not. Let’s see how it goes:
300 (2006)
Perhaps The film that put Gerard Butler on the map for most people, particularly the action and comic book crowds. Butler is in peek physical form here, showing off his bod as the ultimate Spartan warrior and proving that he is indeed quite the leading man. His performance here is commanding, a bit in your face (in the right way), and exactly what the film needed.

At a dinner celebrating Thom Browne’s 20th anniversary and his just-launched capsule collection at Saks Fifth Avenue, the designer told the guests — who included Diane Keaton, Janelle Monáe, Logan Lerman and Danai Gurira — that the night felt like a homecoming.
“L.A. is almost my second home … I do feel like I had five really formative years here that I still hold dear to this day,” Browne explained during a toast at Mr. Chow restaurant in Beverly Hills Thursday night.
Years before he launched his label, the designer of now-iconic suits that have redefined suiting had trekked to Los Angeles while searching for a professional passion. The late interior designer Paul Fortune, whose clients included Sofia Coppola and Marc Jacobs, befriended Browne and later offered his guesthouse as a residence. It was there, adjacent to a pool under the California sunshine, that Browne began to contemplate his future.

Director Thomas Kail says that if you were to boil the arc of “We Were the Lucky Ones” down to its essence, then the Hulu limited series is about a large family who has dinner together and then tries to make sure they have dinner together again. Which is no mean feat for any family of 12; it’s an even more impossible ask when it’s a family of Polish Jews during World War II trying to stay one step ahead of the Germans and/or hiding their Jewishness from anti-semites on all sides.
Kail, showrunner Erica Lipez, and the rest of the “We Were the Lucky Ones’” creative team had a number of choices for how to handle the Kurc family story. It could’ve easily followed just Halina (Joey King), the youngest daughter who finds herself drawn into the resistance, or Addy (Logan Lerman), who can only worry...

Logan Lerman and Joey King star in the Hulu series, We Were The Lucky Ones, based on the book of the same name by Georgia Hunter. The series and book explore the dramatized version of how siblings Addy and Halina, the former of whom is Hunter’s grandfather, survived the Holocaust. While promoting the series on the red carpet of its premiere at the Academy Museum in Los Angeles, Lerman shared that the story drew him because it was a ‘real’ Holocaust story.

“We Were the Lucky Ones” author Georgia Hunter had two goals while writing her bestselling novel, based on true events that her ancestors endured and now adapted for the small screen in the form of a Hulu limited series starring Logan Lerman and Joey King.
At the heart of the story lies the Kurc family, Hunter’s first-generation relatives who experienced the Holocaust during World War II. The Hulu adaptation — like Hunter’s book — unfolds from the different perspectives of her grandfather Addy (portrayed by Lerman) and his four siblings Genek (Henry Lloyd Hughes), Jakob (Amit Rahav), Mila (Hadas Yeron) and Halina (King). The historical drama series features a cast of all-Jewish actors.
“One [was] to honor the family story,” Hunter told TheWrap in February during the Television Critics Association press tour. “I put on the family historian hat and I just said, ‘I want to get this down to capture...

Georgia Hunter is still in disbelief that her family’s story of surviving the Holocaust has been adapted into the Hulu limited series “We Were the Lucky Ones” headlined by Logan Lerman and Joey King. Based on Hunter’s novel of the same name, the show stars Lerman as her grandfather, Addy, and King as his little sister Halina, two of five Polish siblings trying to stay alive and bring their family back together during World War II.
“It’s surreal,” Hunter said at the March 21 premiere of the show, held at the Academy Museum in Los Angeles. “It’s really wonderful. We’ve been editing and watching it on small screens, so to see it up here with this incredible group of people, with all of you, I feel pretty good.”
On the red carpet, Lerman spoke to Variety about the significance of sharing “We Were the Lucky Ones” with the world.

When you’re looking for something to watch this weekend, don’t immediately dismiss Hulu’s “We Were the Lucky Ones” as just another prestige limited series about the Holocaust. It’s that, of course, but it’s also so much more.
Emmy nominee Joey King stars opposite Logan Lerman in this powerful adaptation of Georgia Hunter’s bestselling novel, which tells the story of the Kurcs, a Polish Jewish family separated at the start of World War II, and their attempts to reunite. The eight-episode limited series, the first three episodes of which are now streaming on Hulu, stands out amongst similarly themed projects for the way it expands the scope of the narrative. Set in multiple countries and told over a number of years, “We Were the Lucky Ones” reaches beyond the well-known horrors of the concentration camps with which we’re all painfully familiar to portray the...

Co-composers Rachel Portman and Jon Ehrlich have only met in person once, and collaborated across the globe while scoring Hulu’s “We Were the Lucky Ones.”
Despite this, both Portman and Ehrlich said that working across continents was one of the best parts of the process. Erhlich said: “She would work on something, and then I would wake up in the morning and go to the studio and unwrap a gift. Then by the end of my day, I was handing it off to her, and she could kind of pick up where I left off. It was really a kind of passing the baton back and forth.”

“We Were the Lucky Ones” has its warning built into the title. The Hulu series based on the book by Georgia Hunter and adapted by Erica Lipez is about how one family survived and separated during the Holocaust, all of it underscored by that title — this is what they went through, the horror they witnessed and endured, the sadness that befell them, and they were lucky.
The series kicks off in Radom, Poland before the War, with the Kurc family: Siblings Halina (Joey King), Addy (Logan Lerman), Genek (Henry Lloyd-Hughes), Jakob (Amit Rahav), and Mila (Hadas Yaron) — and their parents, Sol (Lior Ashkenazi) and Nechuma (Robin Weigert). The Kurcs are close-knit, their home echoing with overlapping voices and laughter at the holidays, and they already feel the pangs of missing Addy, who lives in Paris.

Joey King has nothing against method acting – it’s just not for her.

Hulu‘s We Were the Lucky Ones arrives March 28, and in anticipation of the series premiere, stars Logan Lerman and Joey King sat down with TV Insider at TCA to discuss their roles as siblings Addy and Halina Kurc in the limited World War II drama. Based on Georgia Hunter’s bestselling novel, We Were the Lucky Ones recounts the true story of a Jewish family who are separated at the beginning of World War II. Determined to survive and reunite, the family’s journeys are chronicled in this eight-episode show. “It’s super important to keep these stories alive and keep history alive to remind people of the atrocities that happened, but also the beautiful hope within the story and resilience and love that this family shared,” King says. Maarten de Boer “It’s a beautiful take on how important family is,” she adds. “And so I think that this particular story,...

There has been no shortage of television series centering the horrors of the Holocaust. Last year alone, Netflix’s “Transatlantic” depicted a group of resistors living in Marseille, and National Geographic’s “A Small Light” offered a retelling of Anne Frank’s experience through the eyes of Miep Gies, the woman who aided the Franks during their years in hiding. Though both of these series and those like them are important, Hulu’s “We Were the Lucky Ones,” an adaptation of Georgia Hunter’s best-selling novel based on a true story, showcases something different. The show chronicles a family torn apart by war and hatred. Devastating, and profoundly moving, “We Were the Lucky Ones” illustrates the scope of World War II, the inhumanity of others and the anguish of disconnection and loss.

When Joey King was approached by director Thomas Kail to star as Halina Kurc in “We Were the Lucky Ones,” “It was just kind of an immediate yes,” King said to IndieWire. “No thoughts, just yes.”
Hulu’s eight-part adaptation of “Lucky Ones,” based on the beloved 2017 bestseller by Georgia Hunter, tells the story of the real-life Kurc family, a tight-knit Jewish tribe who lived in Poland during World War II. Prior to the war, the five young adult siblings — Halina included — are scattered all over Europe. Logan Lerman, best known for the Percy Jackson film series, began acting in commercials when he was young and made his film debut in 2000 with the movie The Patriot. After starring in several movies, he decided he needed a break in the early 2000s and would return to the industry when he was 12. In 2004, he was cast in one of the two titular roles in the TV series Jack & Bobby.
Logan Lerman in Hunters
By the time he was cast as the titular character in the 2009 movie Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, he had appeared in numerous projects and won three Young Artist Awards. The movies have been criticized for deviating from the source material for years. With the release of the new Disney+ series, fans were hoping to have those mistakes corrected. However, Lerman’s recent words have drawn a surprisingly new reaction from them.

Depending on the moment, the title of Hulu’s We Were the Lucky Ones might sound like a bitter lament or a prayer of thanks, a sigh of relief or an expression of anguish. In the end, it also simply sounds true. Based on the novel by Georgia Hunter — which in turn was inspired by the actual history of her ancestors — the miniseries traces the far-flung journeys of the Kurcs, a Polish Jewish family, throughout World War II. That their paths will be harrowing is not in doubt; a sobering opening caption reminds us that “By the end of the Holocaust, 90% of Poland’s three million Jews were annihilated.”
Yet an exercise in misery this isn’t. No matter how devastating these stories get, what binds all of them together is a sense of hope — stubborn, hard-won, fainter at certain times than others but always undeniably there. So overwhelming is...
