Norway
At the Abigail premiere, Dan Stevens listed Norway among his four favorite vampire movies. “I just saw a great movie recently that I’d never heard of,” he told Letterboxd. “A Greek film called Norway, about a vampire who basically exists in the underground disco scene in ’80s Athens, and he can’t stop dancing ’cause he’s worried his heart will stop. And it’s lovely. It’s great.”
You won’t find a better endorsement than that, but allow me to elaborate. Imagine Only Lovers Left Alive meets What We Do in the Shadows by way of Yorgos Lanthimos. The...

Apart from the brief total phase, staring bare-eyed at a solar eclipse is a bad idea. That is a known fact. Less factual, however, is the notion that giving birth during an eclipse will have serious repercussions for the baby. Certain superstitious lore suggests imminent harm for anyone whose birthday falls on or near an eclipse. Ed Hunt’s 1981 film, Bloody Birthday, takes the concept further and shows how the celestial event creates unfeeling killers.
As taboo as it is to bump off children in cinema, having them be murderers is maybe more so. Which is why Bloody Birthday and its ilk are so well liked and sought after by horror fans. The genre has visited plenty of verboten topics over the years (some with more mileage than others), but killer kids somehow never lose their novelty or shock value. Now, other films featuring a similar pitch have a tendency to be serious and concerned,...

The ’80s Slasher Classic The Prey will be available on Blu-ray October 1st From Arrow Video
It s not human, and it s got an axe! One of the most underrated efforts to hail from the slice-and-dice boom, The Prey at last emerges from the VHS wilderness in a brand new 2K restoration from the recently unearthed original camera negative.
Three young couples set off into the mountains for a weekend of climbing, drinking and lovemaking. But little do they know that they are stumbling into the terrain of a fearsome predator – a wild man, horrifically burned as a child many years ago in a fire which engulfed his gypsy camp and left only him alive. Now he roams the woods in search of his next human prey.
Filmed in 1979-1980 – making it a contemporary, rather than an imitator, of the likes of Friday the 13th – but not released until...

Greetings, everyone! Welcome to what is the final Blu-ray and DVD recap of 2018, as it seems like we have no major genre home media releases coming home next week on Christmas. That being said, the year is ending on a strong note, as we have a number of essential titles hitting various formats this Tuesday.
Scream Factory is keeping busy with their Collector’s Edition releases of Dracula: Prince of Darkness as well as John Carpenter’s Starman (two of my personal favorites!), and Arrow Video has put together a stellar Special Edition of Bloody Birthday for this week as well. As far as recent theatrical titles go, The House With a Clock in Its Walls, The Predator, A Simple Favor, and Venom all arrive on various formats this Tuesday, and if you’re a completist, there’s a 4-film collection of the Predator movies that 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has assembled,...

The 1981 Slasher Classic Bloody Birthday will be available on Blu-ray December 18th From Arrow Video
The Bad Seed meets Halloween in this deliciously twisted early 80s slasher offering directed by Ed Hunt (The Brain) and starring the always loveable Lori Lethin.
Debbie, Curtis and Steven may seem cute as buttons. But their angelic facade conceals the wicked, murderous streak given to them having all been born under the same solar eclipse. With the grown-ups around them blissfully unaware of their little darlings homicidal tendencies, the evil brats begin to bump off the adults one-by-one. By gun. By arrow. By cake. Bye-bye!
Mixing the killer-kid subgenre with elements of the then-booming slice-and-dice movie, 1981 s Bloody Birthday shocks and appalls with its scenes of young children shooting, strangling and bludgeoning their way through the local population. They sure don t (and can t!) make em like this anymore.

A hundred million viewers tuned in to ABC back in ’83 to find out if the world would end with a bang or a whimper. Edward Hume and Nicholas Meyer’s daring docudrama reacquainted Americans with their status as hostages in a global game of nuclear roulette. Gruesome nuclear annihilation visuals complement fine performances led by Jason Robards. The tense, thoughtful show is presented in separate TV and theatrical versions.

Imagine the following sentence in the “'80s horror trailer guy” voice. In 1982, a killer haunted the halls of Crippen High School, giving it the moniker “Horror High.” Now, in 1987, a movie crew returns to Horror High and may or may not survive retelling the story of these heinous crimes. There will be blood! Lots and lots of blood!
It's been a very long time since I've seen Bill Froehlich's Return to Horror High, starring Brendan Hughes, Scott Jacoby, George Clooney, Maureen McCormick, Lori Lethin, Alex Rocco, Vince Edwards, Al Fann, and Panchito Gómez. So, I was absolutely delighted to get the chance to re-watch this glorious horror comedy and discuss it with our readers as part of our celebration of the Class of 1987.
After decades of horror films that were wonderfully serious, a tonal shift started happening in the 1980s, and by the mid-'80s, horror comedies had really gained momentum,...

In 1982 Crippen High School was the scene of a series of brutal murders and yet the killer was never caught. Now a low budget film crew that includes an ill-fated leading man (Clooney), the pretentious director (Jacoby), a lecherous producer (Rocco) and numerous disposable cast and crew have all returned to Crippen High to film the story of the ’82 murders. But when members of the production staff are stalked and slaughtered one by one it appears the killer has returned… Who will survive? And what will be left of their careers?
So, did anyone see the first film? Actually I’m joking, much like the movie itself. Yes, Return to Horror High is that strange beast – part traditional slasher movie, part comedy, part parody. The...

Blame The Bad Seed (1956) for every murderous moppet that has skipped across the screen in subsequent years. Village of the Damned, The Omen, The Good Son, The Children, and many more have explored the taboo of killer kiddies. One of the oddest of the bunch is Ed Hunt’s Bloody Birthday (1981), a ridiculously fun turn with not just one, but three mini-Mansons on hand to clean up the schoolyard.
Well, that’s a bit of a misnomer, as our rascally trio tends to focus on grown ups, what with their stupid rules against homicide and premature burial. (Don’t worry – one of the protagonists is a classmate who is put in mortal danger. All’s fair.) Bloody Birthday was rolled out twice; first in limited release in April of ’81, and then in ’86 (also limited release). The film made its money back but didn’t earn any good grace from critics...

A birthday (or random holiday), killer kids and a total eclipse…all of this sounds like the perfect combination for a horror film. Bloody Birthday is a slasher movie that appeared in the eighties, this should be more than a hint what you’ll see. Horror fans know the tropes well that appear in the film, and although this is somewhat of an obscure homage to Halloween, 88 Films have done what they do best and brought a cult classic (of sorts) onto Blu-ray for the fans to enjoy.

“Bloody Birthday” certainly offers a fun early 80s movie for slasher enthusiasts. The twist this time around is there is no Jason Voorhees or Michael Michaels but 10 year old kids! It was certainly up my ally as I like slasher movies that try something different aside from the typical formula used in these movies.
The plot is three-ten-year old kids begin a mass killing spree due to in part to the fact that they were born during an eclipse,...

Be Kind, Rewind is your one-stop destination for all the information you could ever want about VHS exclusive horror films. We will give you the low-down on the VHS only title we are re-visiting; including where to find it, the going rate, a review of the film, and we will even provide an expert recommendation as to whether the title is worth the money. Like most horror fans, I'm not always pro remake. There are some films that simply should not be remade. However, I am supportive of remaking a film if the creative team behind the reboot can bring something new to the table or improve upon what the original film did, in some way. Case in point, Tobe Hooper improved on the source material in his 2004 remake of The Toolbox Murders. Hooper's remake was a more cohesive film than the original and was more effective at keeping its viewer engaged throughout the film. The original was poorly paced with the entire middle of the film being exhaustively sluggish. As for bringing something new to the table, James Gunn and Zak Snyder didn't outdo the original Dawn of the Dead with their 2004 reimagining, but that's not what the duo was trying for. Instead, they provided a highly enjoyable companion piece with their reboot...

Three ten year old kids born during an eclipse are embark on a murdering spree without anyone suspecting a thing.
Horror films about evil, diabolical children who kill people either come off downright scary such as the modern day version of The Children. Or they come off unintentionally funny such as the 1980 version of The Children. So which group does Blood Birthday fall into? Unfortunately, it falls into the latter. The children at the core of this film are never menacing, they are never scary. The three youngsters at the core of this film are never convincing in their portrayals as evil kids who kill. The kids just don't have any grasp on how to turn in effective performance that sells the horror of it all. Instead, these kids come off way too...

Kiss Me Deadly (Criterion) Robert Aldrich’s 1955 reinvention of the film noir detective story is one of cinema’s great genre mash-ups: part hardboiled noir; part cold war paranoid thriller; and part science- fiction. Ralph Meeker plays Mickey Spillane’s fascist detective Mike Hammer as a narcissistic simian thug, a sadist who would rather smash a suspect’s fingers than make love to the bevvy of beautiful dames that cross his path. In fact, the only time you see a smile cross Meeker’s sneering mug is when he’s doling out pain, with a vengeance. When a terrified young woman (Cloris Leachman, film debut) literally crossed Hammer’s path one night, and later turns up dead, he vows to get to the bottom of her brutal demise. Every fancy pants movie star has a skeleton in their closet that they don’t want to speak of. Whether it is Jason Alexander in The Burning, Tom Hanks in He Knows You’re Alone, or Demi Moore in Parasite – some of the biggest names in show business have started off their careers doing horror films. Perhaps the biggest of them all is ladies man George Clooney, who cut his teeth on the films Return of the Killer Tomatoes, and my spotlight movie of the day – Return to Horror High. Instead of talking to George, I got in touch with actress Lori Lethin to wax nostalgic about this overlooked slasher.
Jason Bene: After starring in Bloody Birthday and The Prey, were you happy to do another slasher film, especially one that was spoofing the genre?
