Last week, the 2024 SAG Awards reunited casts from beloved TV shows and movies including Modern Family, Breaking Bad and The Devil Wears Prada.
While the Modern Family reunion was missing the children from the hit ABC sitcom, the grown-up gathering did include Ty Burrell, who famously missed a previous time the cast gathered since the show wrapped.
Speaking on Friday’s Tonight Show, Jesse Tyler Ferguson said he insisted that Burrell show up after his absence at the last reunion sparked concerns from fans that something had happened to the actor who played Phil Dunphy.
“When the SAG Awards happened, he was supposed to do something else,” Ferguson said. “I was like, ‘Ty! You can’t miss it again! People will really think you’re dead!’ It’s like, ‘We need to present you to show you that you’re not dead!’ So he made it.”

Members of the Directors Guild of America and the Writers Guild of America have moved to form Jewish committees, finding that recent events demonstrate a need for better representation within the guilds.
In the DGA, members have gathered more than 300 signatures on a petition calling on the board to create a Jewish Diversity Committee, which would address issues like antisemitism and employment equity in Hollywood.
“We want a seat at the table,” said Stuart Acher, a director who is organizing the effort. “The guild looks to these diversity committees as advisers to help protect representation and rights for people of that community. Now, Jews don’t have a voice. No one is speaking for the Jews.”
The DGA has eight diversity committees, including those for Black, Latino, Asian American, women, LGBTQ and disabled members.
In recent weeks, WGA West agreed to create a Jewish Writers Committee, which is co-chaired by Dan Signer and Patrick Moss.

Exclusive: The Writers Guild of America’s silence on the October 7 terrorist attacks on Israel looks to be the only statement they’ll be making, at least according to West Coast president Meredith Stiehm.
“In the past week, some members have requested that the Guild take a public stand on events in the Middle East,” WGA West boss and former Homeland EP today told showrunners and others who have sought a statement of support and condolence from their Guild similar to what the DGA and SAG-AFTRA, plus Disney, Comcast, and many others have already said for the over 1400 killed by Hamas and the hundreds taken hostage. “Equally, many members have asked us to refrain from making any statement” Stiehm continued in the email sent out at around noon today.

Exclusive: The Writers Guild of America hasn’t said anything publicly about the savage attack on Israel by terrorists on October 7, and a number of irate showrunners and others will be discussing that silence Friday.
Almost a week after dozens of high-profile WGA members put out an open letter reprimanding guild leadership for “when terrorists invaded Israel to murder, rape, and kidnap Jews… the Guild stayed silent,” guild members are getting together to say something more.
“The guild wants this to go away, but we aren’t going away — it is outrageous they’ve said nothing, absolutely outrageous,” one individual who plans on joining today’s virtual meeting told Deadline.
Chaired by American Soul creator Jonathan Prince, a Zoom meeting is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Pt today to discuss why the WGA has been silent about Hamas’ onslaught against the Jewish state, which has left more than 1,400 dead and thousands injured.

“The Americans” showrunner Joel Fields slammed the Writers’ Guild of America for its failure to condemn Hamas’ attack on Israel.
“The Writers Guild has failed us deeply,” he said Wednesday during a panel at Variety’s Hollywood & Antisemitism Summit. “For an organization that constantly puts out statements to make sure that it’s on the right side of history, it has sadly issued its statements through its silence.”
The latest criticism of the WGA’s response to Israel follows an open letter signed by a group of screenwriters, which included Fields, Eli Roth, Graham Yost, Amy Chozick, Jerry Seinfeld, Steven Levitan, Scott Frank, Amy Sherman-Palladino, among others.
“When it comes to taking a stand, the Writers Guild of America has always led by example. When employers sought to exploit our work, the Guild bravely spoke up. When the BLM movement took flight, the Guild rightfully spoke up. When the #MeToo...

Joel Fields, the showrunner of “The Americans,” blasted the Writers Guild of America on Wednesday for failing to issue a statement condemning the Hamas attack on Israel.
“The Writers Guild has failed us deeply,” Fields said. “For an organization that constantly puts out statements to make sure that it’s on the right side of history, it has sadly issued its statements through its silence.”
Fields was speaking on a panel at Variety’s Hollywood & Antisemitism Summit, presented by The Margaret & Daniel Loeb Foundation and Shine A Light.
His remarks followed up an open letter that was issued on Sunday, which argued that the WGA’s silence on the issue showed that it had “lost the plot.” Fields was among the signatories, as was Joe Weisberg, the creator of “The Americans,” along with Jerry Seinfeld, Eli Roth, Susannah Grant, Steven Levitan, Scott Frank, Amy Sherman-Palladino, Jenji Kohan and many others.

Netflix has greenlighted an untitled comedy series created and executive produced by Erin Foster, starring and executive produced by Kristen Bell and executive produced by Steven Levitan. It comes from 20th Television where sisters Erin and Sara Foster have a pod deal and Levitan is under an overall deal.
This is believed to be the first series order for a 20th TV show at Netflix since the studio became part of Disney as media congloms are starting to shift their focus from exclusively supplying their own streamers to profitability. Under new (old) CEO Bob Iger, Disney has been exploring licensing more film and TV content to rivals.

Kristen Bell is headed back to Netflix to topline a new comedy series.
The Frozen and The Good Place actress will star in an untitled show from creator Erin Foster (Barely Famous) and executive producer Steven Levitan (Modern Family, Reboot) about “the unlikely relationship between an irreverent, outspoken, agnostic woman and an unconventional rabbi,” per the show’s logline. Bell will play the agnostic woman and also serve as an executive producer.
The series is the second at Netflix for Bell, who also starred in the streamer’s thriller parody The Woman in the House Across the Street From the Girl in the Window last year.
Bell is coming off Amazon’s feature film The People We Hate at the Wedding and will be part of the voice cast for an upcoming Paw Patrol movie. Her credits also include Queenpins, Hulu’s Veronica Mars revival and the Bad Moms movies.

Sure, Johnny Knoxville would love to be on the next season of “The White Lotus.” And since the Emmy-winning show’s creator, Mike White is “very close” friend of his, the “Jackass” star also might have let slip where Season 3 is taking place.
Speaking to Vulture on Friday about the cancellation of his sitcom “Reboot,” Knoxville said, “Mike White is a very close friend of mine. He and I had been in Tokyo together. I think that’s where the next … oh, I’m not giving anything away,” he said.
Even if he did let the cat out of the bag, Knoxville doesn’t seem worried about White’s reaction. “I might call him again as soon as this is over…Hey, Mike, I’m still here,” Knoxville added.

Johnny Knoxville will readily admit that, while he had a great time working on Hulu’s Reboot, his first experience as a series regular did not end the way he was expecting.
In an interview published Thursday, Knoxville spoke to Vulture about the comedy from series creator Steven Levitan that was canceled last month after its eight-episode first season premiered in September. Focusing on the cast of an early 2000s sitcom reuniting for a revival, the ensemble show also starred Keegan-Michael Key, Rachel Bloom, Calum Worthy, Krista Marie Yu, Judy Greer and Paul Reiser.
“Of course I would’ve liked it to end differently, but I realize I’m a very lucky human being. We made a great show, and it’ll be there for people to watch forever. That’s a pretty great thing,” Knoxville said. “Hopefully I’m not coming off as angry or sad. I’m so...

Johnny Knoxville Says Give Hulu ‘More Credit’ than Just Assuming It Canceled the Show Over Meta Digs
Johnny Knoxville doesn’t want to have “Jackass” reaction to the untimely cancellation of “Reboot.”
The comedy series, created by “Modern Family” Emmy winner Steven Levitan, starred Knoxville, Keegan-Michael Key, and Judy Greer as former ’90s sitcom stars who reunite to revive their show. Paul Reiser and Rachel Bloom portray a father-daughter screenwriting team behind the new iteration of fictional show “Step Right Up.” Hulu announced the critically acclaimed comedy was canceled after one season in January.
“I have no insight as to why it was canceled,” Knoxville recently told Vulture. “It’s all played very close to the vest. I know we made a lot of fun of Hulu in the show, but I give the executives more credit than to cancel it for such a silly reason.”

Barring some sort of reboot down the line, Reboot fans have seen the last of the Hulu series. According to Deadline, Reboot is “officially over” after Hulu canceled the comedy last month and after creator Steve Levitan and 20th Television tried in vain to find it another home. The site reports that Reboot’s writing room had penned Season 2 scripts that were shopped around to potential buyers. “Well, that seems to be a wrap on Reboot,” Levitan, who previously co-created Modern Family, tweeted last week. “Very proud of our amazing cast and crew and what we did together. Thanks to all who watched and said such nice things. Haven’t seen it? Check us out on Hulu if you can find it. #UnintentionalLimitedSeries.” In Reboot’s first (and seemingly only) season, a revival of a fictional 2000s-era sitcom reunites that show’s dysfunctional cast members. “Now they must deal with...

The satirical showbiz sitcom “Reboot” will not return for a second season, the show’s creator Steve Levitan said on Twitter Monday night. It’s apparent confirmation that the search for a new home following the show’s cancellation on Hulu has failed.
Hulu declined to renew the show late last month, and at the time Levitan was hopeful of finding a new home for his show on another network or streamer. In his statement Monday, posted on his Twitter account, Levitan also took a subtle dig against Hulu and how the streamer treated the show.

It’s final – there will be no second season for Hollywood-centric comedy Reboot, created and executive produced by Modern Family co-creator Steve Levitan.
Following the recent cancellation of the series by Hulu, Levitan and producing studio 20th Television tried to find another home. There are finished scripts, produced by a writers room that had worked on a potential second season, which were sent to potential buyers. Those efforts have now been exhausted, and Reboot if officially over. Levitan alluded to that in a Twitter post Monday.

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
“80 for Brady” has plenty for LGBTQ moviegoers to be excited about. Not only does it star icons Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Rita Moreno and Sally Field as friends who take a trip to see Tom Brady play in the 2017 Super Bowl, but Billy Porter plays a halftime show choreographer in the Paramount Pictures comedy.
Now I’ve learned there was even supposed to be a gay kiss. So what happened? Gus Kenworthy says his cameo in the film originally included him “making out” with his on-screen boyfriend, played by “M3GAN” actor Brian Jordan Alvarez, but the scene didn’t make it into the 98-minute movie. “They said they had to cut it for time, but I think they cut it for Middle America,” the Olympic skier told me at the Gold Meets Golden benefit for Angel City Sports on Feb. 4 in Beverly Hills.

At Thursday night’s premiere of the new Netflix rom-com Your Place or Mine, in which she co-stars, Rachel Bloom got honest about this week’s news that her show Reboot would not be returning after its first season.
“The writing was on the wall for a little bit of time because we weren’t hearing anything,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “I’m confused, people seemed to be watching it in my world. They don’t release numbers so I’m not sure how metrics work.”
She continued, “I’m hoping we can sell it to a new place, I think it’s a fantastic show. I said from the beginning if I saw this show I would want to be on it, and I’d be jealous of anyone who was on it. So, I still can’t believe that I got to be on it, that I get to be on it.

"Reboot," Steve Levitan's snarky meta sitcom about a TV series that gets rebooted two decades after its abrupt cancellation, has been canceled. While I'd like to believe that this is all an elaborate scheme to announce a reboot of "Reboot" and make life imitate art, this isn't a bit. Hulu has officially pulled the plug on the short-lived comedy.
During its eight-episode first season, "Reboot" told the story of "Step Right Up," an early 2000s family sitcom being rebooted by Hulu for a new generation. That clever conceit paved the way for plenty of jokes poking fun at the industry through a disgruntled writers' room, an ongoing war with the Hulu executives, and the general insanity of actors navigating the press cycle, Hollywood expectations, and the changing nature of comedy. Plus, it was all wrapped up with the comfortable bow of a workplace comedy. The series starred Keegan-Michael Key,...

Hulu is laying out the welcome mat for the Hill family: the streamer is reviving King of the Hill from 20th Television Animation, with co-creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels set to return, as well as the beloved former cast.
Judge will reprise his role as Hank Hill, while Kathy Najimy will be back as his wife Peggy, Stephen Root as Bill, Pamela Adlon as Bobby Hill, Johnny Hardwick as Dale and Lauren Tom as Minh. The reboot has been in the works since the 2017 San Francisco Sketchfest, where Judge and Daniels reconnected with the cast and celebrated the 20th anniversary of the old Fox animated show.

As reported yesterday, Showtime has been cleaning house as it goes through a rebranding process with Paramount+. The Hollywood Reporter gives an extended list of the Showtime originals getting canceled. Along with original programing of American Gigolo and Let The Right One In, more titles like Jim Carrey’s comedy, Kidding, as well as Kirsten Dunst’s On Becoming a God in Central Florida have been given the axe with the likes of Super Pumped and American Rust. While these shows were already not getting additional seasons, they’ve been removed from the service entirely, which is a shame. Some, such as Super Pumped, were limited series and presumably evergreen.
All of this cancelation news comes on the heels of both the premium cable network and the online streamer, Paramount+ goes through a merging rebranding to become Paramount+ on Showtime. Chris McCarthy, the President and CEO of Showtime and Paramount Media Networks,...

The cast of “Step Right Up” should plan to step right up to some new projects. On Monday, Hulu canceled “Reboot,” the meta-satirical series about a sitcom reboot, after just one season.
Sources tell IndieWire that “Reboot” creator Steven Levitan, best known for co-creating “Modern Family” with Christopher Lloyd, is currently shopping the show to other outlets with hopes of finding it a new home.
“Reboot” centered around “Step Right Up”: an early 2000s family sitcom canonically revived at Hulu in 2022. The series sent up and examined the modern TV industry, lampooning studios’ cyclical obsession with reboots and the unsteady streaming business model; along with your old-fashioned backstage drama.
Paul Reiser and Rachel Bloom lead the cast of the series as the original creator of “Step Right Up” Gordon and his estranged daughter Hannah, who are forced to work together as co-showrunners on the reboot. Keegan-Michael Key, Johnny Knoxville,...

Hulu has canceled the comedy series “Reboot” after just one season, Variety has learned.
The first and only season of the series consisted of eight episodes and debuted on the streamer on Sept. 20, 2022.
The lot of the show began with Hulu deciding to reboot a popular 2000s sitcom called “Step Right Up,” forcing the cast to reunite and confront their unresolved issues.
The series starred Keegan-Michael Key, Johnny Knoxville, Judy Greer, and Calum Worthy as the show’s original cast members, Rachel Bloom as the millennial writer looking to reboot the show, Paul Reiser as the show’s original creator, and Krista Marie Yu as a former tech exec now working at Hulu tasked with overseeing the reboot.
“Reboot” was created by Steve Levitan, with the show marking his first project since the ending of “Modern Family” in 2020 after eleven seasons.
Levitan also served as executive producer and showrunner on “Reboot.

Hulu has opted not to renew the showbiz sitcom “Reboot” for a second season, the streamer said Monday.
A source close to the production told TheWrap that creator Steven Levitan, a multiple Emmy winner for ABC hit “Modern Family,” is trying to find a new home for the comedy.
The series starred Rachel Bloom as a TV executive who successfully pitches the revival of her favorite 20-year-old sitcom, “Step Right Up,” and the clashes that follow between the cast, crew and writers. It premiered on Sept. 20 to favorable reviews, with Rotten Tomatoes scoring it 88 from 40 critics entries, including from TheWrap’s Thelma Adams, who called it “hilarious” and “consistently laugh-out-loud funny.”
The ensemble included Judy Greer, Keegan-Michael Key, Johnny Knoxville and Calum Worthy as the original “Step Right Up” cast, Paul Reiser as the series’ creator, and Krista Marie Yu as Hulu’s VP of comedy who’s “new to humor.

Reboot will not live to see another day at Hulu.
The Disney-controlled streamer has opted to cancel the scripted comedy series from Modern Family co-creator Steve Levitan after one season. Sources say Levitan is shopping Reboot with the hopes of finding a new home for the comedy produced by Disney’s 20th Television.
Reboot was Levitan’s first show since he wrapped ABC’s Emmy-winning Modern Family and renewed his overall deal with 20th TV. It was also the first series that Levitan created specifically for a streaming platform. Ordered to series in January 2022 after filming a pilot in late 2021, the comedy followed the cast of a sitcom who reunite in an effort to reboot the series for Hulu. Keegan-Michael Key, Johnny Knoxville and Judy Greer starred alongside Paul Reiser and Rachel Bloom.

Too inside baseball for you, Hulu viewers? Whatever the reason, Reboot — Steve Levitan’s show-within-a-show comedy that starred Keegan-Michael Key, Johnny Knoxville and Judy Greer — will not see a second season at the streamer.
The single-camera comedy followed execs at Hulu who decide to reboot a family comedy from the 2000s. Actors from the original return to reprise their roles for the reboot, and “deal with their unresolved issues in today’s fast-changing world,” according to the original logline.
