It’s the end of an era. On March 20, the Walt Disney Co. will complete its $71.2 billion acquisition of key assets in Rupert Murdoch’s media empire. That marks the final drumbeat for the historic 20th Century Fox as one of Hollywood’s six major studios, as brands such as FX, Fox Searchlight and NatGeo are folded into the Magic Kingdom. To memorialize the passing of a giant in the media space, Variety spoke with the filmmakers and executives responsible for some of Fox’s most memorable movies and shows.

Alejandro G Iñárritu, best film, Birdman (backstage in press room) –
Asked about being Mexican and making films for the world: “Well, look at this room. I don’t know how many nationalities are in this room, but I don’t feel different to anybody of you here. You know, it can be from any continent, from any language. I don’t care. I feel very relate to any of you. So I as an artist, as a human, as a filmmaker, I cannot have these stupid borders, flags, and passports. Those are a concept that were invented by a human society. Anne Thompson: How did your two companies end up collaborating on this film? Claudia Lewis: Searchlight got the script first, and loved it, thought about it. It was a little out of our reach, budgetarily. Because you have a budget cap. Lewis: We tend to have a cap for the movies that we make. But, about two weeks after my initial meeting with Alejandro, I heard that Brad had gotten it as well, and that they were interested. So it was a loving partnership right from the start. Brad Weston: We had worked together on a film that hadn’t been released yet, but we were just in previews on, “12 Years a Slave." So we had just started our relationship, and it was going nicely. Regency was trying to make another movie with Alejandro, which he’s actually in his third week of shooting in Canada right now,...

Exclusive: Jean-Marc Vallée, who helmed the upcoming Matthew McConaughey-starrer Dallas Buyers Club, has been set by Fox Searchlight to helm Wild. Reese Witherspoon already is set to star in the Nick Hornby-scripted adaptation of Cheryl Strayed’s best-selling memoir. Witherspoon and her Pacific Standard partner Bruna Papandrea are producing with River Road Entertainment’s Bill Pohlad. Vallee’s producing partner, Nathan Ross, will be exec producer. Witherspoon will play Strayed, who in the book recounted how the twin tragedies of her marriage cratering and her mother dying plunged her into a long spiral of reckless and destructive behavior. At the end of her rope, she made a rash decision: With no experience, she hiked more than 1,000 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail, alone. She experienced as much terror as pleasure in navigating the rough terrain but regained her mojo in the process. Searchlight execs Claudia Lewis and David Greenbaum are overseeing.

It’s been a couple of years now since Bryce Dallas Howard announced her intentions to move into directing with her original co-written script “The Originals.” Though that project has yet to materialize, Howard hasn’t given up on her directorial career and has helmed the music video for the latest single from M83’s Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming. Part of MTV’s “Supervideos” series that pairs actor-turned-directors with indie bands, the music video for “Claudia Lewis” (via Pitchfork) stars Lily Collins (star of the upcoming Ya-adaptation “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones”) as an alien hiding among teenagers that include Israel Broussard (“The Bling Ring”) and Ashley Rickard (MTV show “Awkward”). In an interview with Vogue, Howard cites the Nicolas Roeg-helmed and David Bowie-starring sci-fi film “The Man Who Fell To Earth” as an inspiration for the music video. We don’t really see the connection,...

Brit Marling first got the idea for the new eco-thriller "The East" four years ago. She just didn't know it then. It was 2009 when Marling and director Zal Batmanglij decided to travel around the country for what Marling calls an "adventure."
"We had been reading a lot about the anarchist movement and freeing collectives. The ideas were so interesting," Marling, 29, told HuffPost Entertainment. "I remember reading an anarchist manifesto online that was so beautifully written and so impacting and it had no byline. They just did not care about credit or ego or vanity. It was just about sharing ideas. I was like, 'Who are these people? I want to know these people.'"
Marling and Batmanglij spent the summer of 2009 doing just that, sleeping on rooftops, train hopping and meeting with anarchist collectives. By September, they were back in Los Angeles, where they decided to turn their experiences into screenplays.
