In a surprise for fans of Huey Lewis and the News, the spirit of rock and roll is alive on Broadway. The cherished band’s songs have received the Broadway treatment in the new show, The Heart of Rock and Roll.
Jonathan A. Abrams deserves a round of applause for his work (based on a story by Tyler Mitchell and Lewis himself), which serves as a vehicle for the Huey Lewis and News songs. With a talented ensemble of singers and dancers, new life is breathed into the iconic tunes.
The production falls under the well-established category of jukebox musicals, where the songbooks of beloved rockers and folk singers are fair game for the stage.
The story follows Bobby (played by Cory Cott), an ambitious young man who serves as the lead singer of a band. At the same time, he works at a box-manufacturing company and dreams of becoming a salesman.

Two of the more anticipated star turns on Broadway this season — Steve Carell making his debut in the Lincoln Center Theater revival of Uncle Vanya and The Sopranos alum Michael Imperioli returning to the New York stage in Circle in the Square’s An Enemy of the People — got no love from Tony Award nominators today, and the West End hit Patriots, written by The Crown‘s Peter Morgan, barely registered on the roster, with only one nom for lead actor Michael Stuhlbarg.
Even more empty-handed than Patriots was The Wiz, the cheery, if rote, revival of the beloved Black retelling of The Wizard of Oz. Despite a star turn by Wayne Brady, it’s possible that Tony nominators saw the Broadway revival for the uninspired road show it is.
Other shows with zero nominations included I Need That starring Danny DeVito, the Barry Manilow-Bruce Sussman musical Harmony,...

Stereophonic became the most nominated play in Tony Awards history Tuesday, scoring a surprisingly strong 13 nominations for the 2024 Tony Awards, including acting nods for almost the entire cast. Several other shows also saw most of their leading roles nominated, including Days of Wine and Roses, which closed early but still saw nominations for its leads Kelli O’Hara and Brian D’Arcy James, as well as Merrily We Roll Along, which saw nominations for its three leads, Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe and Lindsay Mendez.
Stereophonic also landed a best score nomination, a bit unusual since the production is a play, but it features original songs written by ex-Arcade Fire member Will Butler for the fictional band at the center of the story. While the songs in the play have been praised, the nomination is a bit atypical given that most of the songs featured in the musical are delivered in snippets,...

After revealing behind the scenes details about how he helped bring an all-star group of musicians together to make the Grammy-winning smash hit charity single “We Are the World” in the Netflix documentary “The Greatest Night in Pop,” Lionel Richie recently spoke to IndieWire about which of the participants he knows have watched the movie, and are still reeling from the down-to-the-wire recording session.
“Huey Lewis sat next to me while I’m watching the premiere, and he leaned over to me, and he said, ‘I don’t think we’re going to make it,’” the “American Idol” judge said at an event celebrating the reveal of the current season’s Top 10 finalists. “I said, ‘Huey, it’s 39 years ago. “Dance is my language, so it was a lot of fun,” expresses Lorin Latarro about working on the revival of “The Who’s Tommy,” which is a show told as much through the songs by Pete Townshend as the choreography. This production, which arrives on Broadway 31 years after the original, comes from Des McAnuff, who co-wrote the book with Townshend and directed that first staging in 1993. The choreographer “had to learn the music as deeply as Des,” who knows “every millisecond,” and says their work on the revival “unfolded collaboratively beautifully.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
McAnuff has introduced a framing device to this production that begins “in the future.” Latarro immediately understood that move because “‘Tommy’ will go on and on as an album, trauma will go on and on, hopefully healing in tandem with that trauma, is part of the human condition.” It also informed her approach to the movement of this production,...

Inside Broadway’s James Earl Jones Theatre on a recent afternoon, Huey Lewis has some actual good news. Checking his texts, he learns that Martin Short will be attending the opening of The Heart of Rock and Roll, the rom-com musical based around songs from his catalog. Also on the list for the first-night celebration are Michael J. Fox and the members of Lewis’ band, the News.
But anyone expecting Lewis to jump onstage and join the cast in song will be disappointed. “Can’t do it,” he says resolutely.

Huey Lewis stopped by The Daily Show to discuss the new Broadway jukebox musical featuring Huey Lewis and the News hits, The Heart of Rock and Roll (get tickets here). Along the way, he played a game of “Fuck, Marry, Kill” with classic ’80s albums.
With host Jordan Klepper — who has stepped in for the newly-returned John Stewart for the rest of the week — Huey was given the choice to “Fuck, Marry, Kill” the four albums that went number one in 1984.
He was presented with Michael Jackson’s Thriller, Prince’s Purple Rain, Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the USA, and Kenny Loggins’ Footloose. Lewis swiftly decided to kill Footloose, saying “Kenny Loggins won’t mind, he’s a good guy.” He then said he’d “make love to Born in the USA,” and that he would “fall in love with Thriller” — he did, however, clarify that he prefers Michael...

When Quincy Jones posted a sign above the entrance to Am Studios in Los Angeles that read “Check Your Ego at the Door,” the night the producer and a group of 40 or so of the biggest singers of the ‘80s recorded the charity anthem “We are the World.”

Plot: In late 1984, inspired by the success of Band-Aid in the UK, legendary producer Quincy Jones decides to make a charity single including all of the biggest pop stars in the country. Due to the complicated schedules of all involved, they only have one evening to complete what will become one of the best-selling singles of all time, “We Are the World.”
Review: If you’ve seen the music video for “We Are the World,” you’ll know that pretty much every pop-rock icon of the first half of the eighties was there for its recording. In addition to co-writers Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie, there was Huey Lewis, Hall & Oates, Diana Ross, Kenny Loggins, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Willie Nelson, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Kenny Rogers, Paul Simon, Steve Perry and so many more. Even Dan Aykroyd showed up singing in the chorus.

Lionel Richie has been very emotional lately, but he wants to reassure everyone that he’s okay.
According to Richie, it’s just been a heady experience to look back nearly 40 years and relive all the wondrous and chaotic memories of writing and recording “We Are the World” for the new Netflix documentary “The Greatest Night in Pop.”
“Every segment of this journey, I cry,” Richie said at the Variety Studio presented by Audible at Sundance Film Festival, where the film made its world premiere. “It just brings tears to my eyes because some of us are not here anymore. Also it was our innocence. We actually were making a difference, so to see the naive version of ourselves, when we actually had an aha moment that we might take all this celebrity and change the world … I’m just emotional about it because I get to watch my kid being born again.

“I didn’t really know much about the making of the song,” admits The Greatest Night in Pop director Bao Nguyen of 1985’s star-studded Ethiopian famine relief hit “We Are the World.” “You just make these assumptions about how things are made because it just happens. But when you think now of 46 great artists getting together to make that, it would be really impossible for that to happen now.”
Whether or not the superstars of 2024 could or would come together like the hit makers of the Reagan Era did in America and the UK almost 40 years ago is debatable. Netflix has shared the trailer for an upcoming documentary about the making of the 1985 charity single “We Are the World.”
Directed by Bao Nguyen, The Greatest Night in Pop tells the story of how 46 of music’s biggest stars came together in a single day to record one song that would become a global sensation in the truest sense of the phrase. As Lionel Richie explains in the trailer, he and Michael Jackson co-wrote “We Are the World” after Harry Belafonte called him directly to ask if he could write a song to raise money for hunger relief in Africa.

One of the biggest pop culture moments of the 80s was when a large group of pop artists came together for a special one-time song dedicated to raising awareness and helping to end famine in Africa. That song, “We Are the World,” was amazingly stacked with talent, including Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Tina Turner, Bob Dylan, Cyndi Lauper, Bruce Springsteen, Harry Belafonte, Kenny Loggins, Dionne Warwick, and Huey Lewis. A documentary from Netflix recounts the story of how the song came together with The Greatest Night in Pop. The film is also scheduled to screen at the Sundance Film Festival this year, with Lionel Richie in tow.
Netflix’s description of the documentary reads,
“On January 25, 1985, dozens of the biggest names in music convened at a studio in Los Angeles, checked their egos at the door and recorded a song to benefit African famine relief that would alter global pop culture history.

"Let's get this party started." Netflix has revealed the first official trailer for a music history documentary film called The Greatest Night in Pop, directed by doc filmmaker Bao Nguyen (of the Bruce Lee doc Be Water previously). This film was a last minute addition to the exciting Sundance 2024 line-up, playing at the prestigious film festival in a few weeks before it debuts on Netflix at the end of January. In 1985, 46 music icons, including Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Cyndi Lauper, Diana Ross, and Stevie Wonder, came together for the most star-studded recording session in history. This is the untold story of the legendary global pop song "We Are the World" (listen here) recorded to help bring more support to African famine relief — which very nearly didn't happen. Exclusive: Netflix has set a January 29 streaming premiere date for The Greatest Night in Pop, a feature doc just announced as world premiering at the Sundance Film Festival on the 19th of this month.
Directed by award winner Bao Nguyen (Be Water), the film takes viewers back to January 25, 1985, when dozens of the biggest names in music convened at a Los Angeles studio and checked their egos at the door amidst the recording of a song to benefit African famine relief — one that would alter global pop culture history. Chronicled in the doc is the massive undertaking to assemble the world’s most impressive supergroup in a time before cell phones and email. That group of artists, led by the song’s co-writers and two of the most significant musicians of the 20th century — Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie — came from different worlds but united to record “We Are the World.

In the mid-2000s, Bob Garrett was invited backstage at a Daryl Hall and John Oates concert in Southern California. Garrett, whose credits include working on Broadway shows like The Color Purple and Sing! and writing songs recorded by Tina Turner, Heart, and others, remembers how he and his creative partner at the time, Christian Taylor, were greeted. “Daryl said, ‘We’ve been waiting for you,’” Garrett recalls. “They really wanted to do a Broadway show.”

Described as “a raucous rom-com wrapped in pure musical joy,” The Heart of Rock and Roll will use the music of Huey Lewis and the News to score a story about two 30-somethings whose lives are changed after they meet each other. Among the tunes included in the soundtrack are “Workin’ for a Livin’,” “Stuck with You,” “If This Is It,” “The Power of Love,” and more.

The 1975, a band whose members are no strangers to real-life carnage, recreated fictional scenes of horror from movies at their Halloween concert at a venue with the comically unscary name of the Little Caesars Arena (horror! horror!) in Detroit. Their “Halloween Party,” according to NME, included callbacks to American Psycho, The Ring, and The Blair Witch Project.
Some of the horrors began after the band performed “About You.” Huey Lewis and the News’ “Hip to Be Square” came over the Pa, and singer Matty Healy was seen dressing like Patrick Bateman,...

"Pee-wee's Playhouse" was an anomaly. It premiered a year after the surprise box office success of Tim Burton's "Pee-wee's Big Adventure," and, like "The Pee-wee Herman Show" before it, seemed to be strictly kids' stuff. But Paul Reubens' overgrown child act uniquely appealed to the inner brat in all of us. It wasn't like Looney Tunes, where artists snuck in adult-skewing references, nor was it a full-on, off-color parody of the kiddie show format that you'd find on "Saturday Night Live." It was honestly, disarmingly, good clean fun. Its target audience could enjoy it over a bowl of Frosted Flakes, while college students and beyond could enjoy it over a bowl of Frosted Flakes preceded by a bowl of ... something else.
A weekly half-hour dose of Pee-wee was bliss in 1986. I'd just started junior high, which is when your action figures are immediately consigned to the attic, so admitting...

It’s been 38 years since the release of the film version of Back to the Future.
But the cast gathered earlier this week as if no time had passed at all, joining a gala celebrating Back to the Future: The Musical, which is currently playing in previews at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway ahead of an Aug. 3 opening date.
The plot line of the stage show follows the film. The logline: “When Marty McFly finds himself transported back to 1955 in a time machine built by the eccentric scientist Doc Brown, he accidentally changes the course of history. Now he’s in a race against time to fix the present, escape the past and send himself … back to the future.”
On hand for the gala on Tuesday were the original Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd), along with costars Lea Thompson (Lorraine Baines), Don Fullilove (Mayor...

When Sports came out in ’83, Huey Lewis and the News really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album had a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gave the songs a big boost. Now, to celebrate its 40th anniversary, Capitol/UMe have announced a new vinyl reissue of the album.
Come September 15th, 2023, Sports will be repressed on limited-edition olive green and classic black. Pre-orders are now ongoing.
In 2020, Lewis and the News released their first new album in 14 years, Weather. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely Lewis will ever sing or perform again after being diagnosed with Ménière’s disease, an inner ear disorder that can result in vertigo, tinnitus, and ear pressure.
Even though he’s no longer an active musician, Lewis isn’t spending his downtime watching American Psycho. He recently admitted that he still hasn’t seen the film — despite...

Foo Fighters have revealed Josh Freese as their new live drummer.
Foo Fighters debuted their new touring lineup on Sunday during a pre-tour streaming event called “Foo Fighters: Preparing Music For Concerts.”
Prior to revealing Freese as their new live drummer, Foo Fighters teased other potential replacements in a funny skit that featured appearances from Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith, Tool’s Danny Carey, and Tommy Lee of Mötley Crüe.
Freese replaces longtime Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, who tragically passed away in March 2022 at the age of 50. Foo Fighters’ new album, But Here We Are, is dedicated to Hawkins.
Freese is a logical replacement, a drummer’s drummer with a resume that’s bar none. Over the years, he’s drummed for everyone from Vandals to Devo to Nine Inch Nails to Sting. As a testament to his versatility, during Coachella 2022, he played with both 100 gecs and Danny Elfman on the same day.

One of the most memorable scenes from "American Psycho" is when mergers and acquisitions business executive (or is it murders and executions?) Patrick Bateman finally kills his rival Paul Allen to the peppy tune of "Hip To Be Square" by Huey Lewis And The News. Wearing a rain jacket to protect his expensive suit from the impending bloodshed, Patrick blasts the tune on his fancy CD player and goes into a long-winded monologue about the hidden depths of the lively pop song:
"A song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity and the importance of trends. It's also a personal statement about the band itself."
The song communicates Patrick's need to hide his violent tendencies so that he can conform to the anonymous and shallow environment of Wall Street — where all the men mistake each other for someone else,...

Huey Lewis’ music is featured prominently in American Psycho, but the musician says he still hasn’t seen the movie more than two decades later. He initially boycotted it over a press release claiming Huey Lewis and the News pulled “Hip to Be Square” from the soundtrack due to the film’s violence.
As Lewis explained in the latest episode of Mark Hoppus’ After School Radio on Apple Music Hits, he had read Bret Easton Ellis’ book that served as the source material for the Christian Bale-starring film and was happy to license “Hip to Be Square” for American Psycho. “When I read the book, it was like a review of art stuff,” Lewis said. “And not only us, but Phil Collins and Tina Turner, and man, he really knew his stuff, he got us pretty much correct.”

Slapdash, direct-to-video horror sequels cropped up like weeds in the 2000s, but no title from this particular era continues to receive as much flak as American Psycho 2 (sometimes subtitled All American Girl). As people probably know by now, this began as an original movie called The Girl Who Wouldn’t Die before someone at Lionsgate had the bright idea to make it into a sequel to American Psycho. To say critics and audiences back then hated the decision would be an understatement. Yet in this time of constant reevaluation of overhated cinema, maybe Morgan J. Freeman‘s American Psycho 2 isn’t a complete misfire. Beyond the panning and massive studio meddling sits a dark and sometimes fun comedy that was never given a fair chance.
“Angrier, deadlier, sexier” says the tagline for American Psycho 2, but this lambasted sequel is far less lurid than its poster suggests. Before the present-day plot begins,...

I always wanted to be a Ghostbuster.
Still do, honestly. Whether you’re a kid or an adult, Ghostbusters remains an appealing power fantasy. Unlike most cinematic action heroes of their time, the Ghostbusters were pragmatic capitalists to a fault. Their most formidable foes weren’t Gozer the Destructor or Viggo the Carpathian, but bureaucratic naysayers who threatened to keep them from doing their jobs.
As the beleaguered ghost policemen, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis became overnight mega stars. Behind the camera, director Ivan Reitman redefined the potential for high-budget, star-driven comedies and also became a household name. Sometimes, as the philosopher Huey Lewis once observed, one has "gotta get back in time." The "Game of Thrones" property is doing just that with "House of the Dragon"; "The Lord of the Rings" has done it before with "The Hobbit" and is doing it again with "The Rings of Power"; and now "The Witcher" is joining the fantasy franchise time-warp party with "The Witcher: Blood Origin," a miniseries that explores a key turning point in the history of "The Witcher" universe.
Created by "The Witcher" writer Declan de Barra, "Blood Origin" takes place 1,200 years prior to the plot of its parent show and explores the incidents that led directly to the creation of the first monster-hunting Witcher on the Continent. Perhaps even more importantly, it also tells the story of the "Conjunction of the Spheres," a crucial event in which the worlds of monsters, humans, and elves all merged into one,...

It’s more a public service than a spoiler to reveal that no matter how Fox is promoting the show, polarizing Oscar winner Susan Sarandon is truly not the primary star of the new musical soap opera Monarch.
Armed with this knowledge, everybody comes out ahead. Sarandon haters can tune into Monarch without fear of an excess of Susan Sarandon; Sarandon fans, the real winners here, can safely skip Monarch entirely.
Although it obviously and rather desperately wants to be Empire only with country music, Monarch is actually just protracted mediocre karaoke. Any karaoke aficionado can tell you that mediocre karaoke is the worst karaoke of all. Bad karaoke is drunken, trashy fun. Great karaoke is entertaining and musical. Mediocre karaoke? It’s that movie with Gwyneth Paltrow and Huey Lewis. (Duets. It’s called Duets.) And Monarch wishes it was even that good.

[This story contains spoilers for the season three finale of HBO’s Barry, “starting now.”]
Well, season three of Barry has come to a close, and somehow, again, miraculously, co-creators Bill Hader and Alec Berg have managed to keep all the main characters above ground.
Perhaps none of the series regulars has more reason to be appreciative than Anthony Carrigan, whose self-conscious, deferential Chechen mobster NoHo Hank — a representative scene in this season’s penultimate episode finds him waiting patiently while a Bolivian shopkeep assembles a blowgun and fires a dart into his neck: “Yep, that’s what I thought you were doing, but I didn’t want to be rude!” — was originally supposed to die in the pilot.
“At the end of the [first] episode I get shot in the car. … I got my one episode as this weird, goofy character, and then that’s it, he’s done,” Carrigan told The Hollywood Reporter in a Zoom conversation before the finale.

To paraphrase Huey Lewis and the News, the power of Pez is a curious thing. Invented in Vienna, Austria in 1927 by Eduard Haas III as “an alternative to smoking,” the ubiquitous candy’s name was derived from the German word for peppermint – its original flavor. The various iconic dispensers not only helped make snacking on sweets more portable but also fueled a collector’s frenzy around the globe that continues undeterred to this day.
Legend has it tech entrepreneur Pierre M. Omidyar founded eBay in 1995 to provide a way for his fiancée to trade Pez candy dispensers. While this was later found to be a fabricated story, it’s still a sweet one that illustrates the possibility of what can happen when necessity turns into a hobby. Omidyar achieved his goal of bringing together buyers and sellers...

The long-awaited Ghostbusters: Afterlife arrives in theaters this week, and the critics have been less than kind.
“This is spirit-of-’84 blockbuster cosplay — a cinematic equivalent of dressing up as Venkman and trying to get every last detail of your costume and D.I.Y. proton pack right, parading your loyalty for the benefit of your peers,” reads a review by Rolling Stone‘s David Fear. “And yet Ghostbusters: Afterlife somehow leaves out the magic that made that Bill Murray-fueled, big-budget genre mash-up so wonderful in the first place.”
