The Advanced Imaging Society announced its 2024 Lumiere Award winners on Friday, with Oscars frontrunners “Oppenheimer” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” among the honorees.
This year’s Lumiere Awards celebrated “Masters and Magic,” according to a press release from the Advanced Imaging Society, and recognized “distinguished directors and professionals in film, television, and emerging media” as “voted for by members of the Hollywood creative and technology community.”
“Our awards have humorously been called the Oscars for geeks,” said Jim Chabin, the president of the Advanced Imaging Society, in a statement. “In 2023, amidst the industry’s chaos, we witnessed the culmination of years of dedication and sudden bursts of creativity. That work is so important to all of us who love film and television. The Lumiere winners of this year have notably expanded the boundaries of technology in filmmaking, enriching storytelling in remarkable ways.”

Cillian Murphy saluted the “unsung heroes” — the artists, engineers and craftspeople — who make Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, Friday at the Advanced Imaging Society’s 14th Lumiere Awards. Murphy, who stars in the titular role of the Universal film, accepted the Lumiere for best live-action feature for the movie, on behalf of Nolan, Emma Thomas and the “family.”
The Advanced Imaging Society recognizes the intersection of art and technology, and the celebration of all who work on movies was shared throughout the luncheon ceremony, which was held at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

The classic Harold Lloyd comedy “Safety Last” is turning 100 years old this year. But with its heavy dollops of action and a superstar’s real-life derring-do, it doesn’t seem a day over 10, even if it does date back to the silent era. The film screens this Sunday as the climax of the Academy Museum’s “Silent Sundays” series, with a live score from a 24-piece orchestra helping heighten the suspense in the ultimate fear-of-heights movie.
Lloyd’s granddaughter, Suzanne Lloyd, will be on hand for the anniversary screening. As the keeper of her granddad’s flame for decades, she has perspective on how “Safety Last” resonates with contemporary audiences, especially an extended final act that has the ‘20s star climbing a skyscraper in downtown L.A. and finally hanging from a wayward clockface, in one of the most iconographic images in all of movie history.

Bespectacled Harold Lloyd, one of the legendary clown jewels of silent film, is best known for such films as 1924’s “Girl Shy” and “Hot Water,” 1925’s “The Freshman” and 1928’s “Speedy.” And his masterpiece “Safety Last!” is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. In this charming comedy, Lloyd’s “The Boy” leaves his small hometown hoping to make it good in the big city and earn enough money to send for his starry-eyed girlfriend (Mildred Davis). Though there are many wonderful moments in the film, “Safety Last!” is best membered for the sequence in which Lloyd defies gravity hanging from the hands of a gigantic clock of a high-rise building.
And if you live in Los Angeles and its environs, you can catch a beautifully restored screening of “Safety Last!” Sunday August 27 at 2 p.m. at the Academy Museum’s David Geffen Theater. A live orchestra conducted by Angel Velez...

“Avatar: The Way of Water” and “Elvis” are among the films that took top honors at the 13th annual Lumiere Awards, the Advanced Imaging Society (Ais) announced today.
The Feb. 10 ceremony was presented by Microsoft and held at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles. Twenty-three awards were given out to the creative teams behind entertainment that utilizes technology to make immersive content.
Jon Landau, producer of the “Avatar” sequel, took to the stage with visual effects supervisors Eric Saindon and Richie Baneham to accept the award for best live action feature film. The feature, directed by James Cameron, was painstakingly crafted using performance capture above and below water and dubbed by Ais as the “most awe-inspiring and astonishing cinematic experience of the year.”
Though not in attendance at the ceremony, Cameron was also honored with the Voices for the Earth Award in recognition of the filmmaker’s green thumb.

The Advanced Imaging Society’s Lumiere Awards winners list runs to 21 categories for distinguished creative and technical achievement. The theme for the March 3 event was “Larger Than Life” and the concept rang true as three of Hollywood’s most acclaimed directors were among the honorees. Guillermo del Toro, Adam McKay and Denis Villeneuve all took center stage in a ceremony honoring content and experiences produced for film, television, advertising, gaming, mobile, online and more.
The inaugural Gene Kelly Visionary Award was presented to del Toro by Kelly’s widow, Patricia Ward Kelly. “When I heard about the award, I thought maybe somebody had finally seen me dancing,” the “Nightmare Alley” director joked after accepting his gold-dipped statue. “Then I thought, maybe it’s for something else. The fact that he was a futurist. He was a man that was painfully aware of where the art form was and where it could be taken.

The Criterion Collection has released its fourth entry in a group of Harold Lloyd silent classics, titles considered to be his very best work—and The Kid Brother could very well be at the top of the heap as the definitive Lloyd feature film. While Safety Last! (1923) contains the iconic sequence of Lloyd ascending a skyscraper and hanging on to the arm of a giant clock, there is much to be said about The Kid Brother’s storytelling, the depth of its characters, and Lloyd’s ability to make us laugh at peril. This time, instead of great heights or speeding cars, the threat comes from villains who want nothing more than to break poor Harold’s neck.
The setting is a rural town at the cusp of the changeover between “western times” and the modern age. Cars exist, but most people are still riding horses. Sheriff...

Shirley Jones Movies: Innocent virgins and sex workers galore (photo: Shirley Jones and Burt Lancaster in ‘Elmer Gantry’) (See previous post: “Shirley Jones: From Book to Movies.”) I haven’t watched The Cheyenne Social Club (1970), a comedy Western directed by Gene Kelly, and starring 62-year-old James Stewart as a cowpoke who inherits an establishment that turns out to be a popular house of prostitution. Henry Fonda plays Stewart’s partner. And I’m sure Shirley Jones, as one of the sex workers, looks lovely in the film. Hopefully, director Kelly gave this likable, talented actress the chance to do more than just stand around looking pretty. But then again … For all purposes, The Cheyenne Social Club ended Shirley Jones’ film stardom; that same year she turned to TV and The Partridge Family. Jones would return to films only nine years later, as one of several stars (among them Michael Caine,...

“There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition. And it lies between the pit of man’s fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call The Twilight Zone.”

Marking the 112th anniversary of Harold Lloyd's birthday, Sony Pictures Releasing is reissuing Lloyd's classic films, including Safety Last! and The Freshman. Beginning April 20, the films, which have been made available by the Harold Lloyd Trust, will premiere at Film Forum in New York. Bookings in additional cities -- including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston and Chicago -- will follow. Many of the silent titles will feature newly recorded scores. "My grandfather holds an historic place in cinema history," said Suzanne Lloyd, the actor's granddaughter and president of Harold Lloyd Entertainment. "I'm pleased and proud that Sony has stepped forward to release these films so that a new generation can experience the sheer entertainment of Harold Lloyd on the big screen." Lloyd's film career spanned 34 years and 200 comedies. Among his most famous films are Grandma's Boy (1922), Safety Last! (1923), Girl Shy (1924), The Freshman (1925), The Kid Brother (1927), Speedy (1928) and Movie Crazy (1932).

The image of actor Harold Lloyd hanging off a clock in the 1923 silent movie Safety Last! is getting a contemporary makeover. Mark Gordon will produce Safety Last for Columbia Pictures, which has picked up writer Keith Bunin's pitch. The contemporary take, a love story, will be loosely based the Lloyd classic, which centers on a store clerk who organizes a contest to climb the outside of a tall building but is forced to make the perilous climb himself. The new version is expected to feature elaborate, choreographed physical comedy that was the trademark of the silent pictures. P. Jennifer Dana (Winter Passing) also will produce, and Suzanne Lloyd, granddaughter of the silent-film legend, will serve as executive producer. The Mark Gordon Co.'s Lawrence Inglee will oversee the project alongside Columbia Pictures senior executives Andrea Gianetti and Matt Tolmach.
