Many of Long's contemporaries considered him a potential rival to Fred Astaire, but despite his terpsichorean talents (best showcased in Broadway Melody of 1936) Long never caught on with movie audiences, and ended his career appearing in nightclubs rather than on the silver screen or on the Broadway stage.
