Richard Fleischer’s Biblical epic is a class act all the way, and one of producer Dino De Laurentiis’s greatest accomplishments. Anthony Quinn’s guilty, perplexed bandit survives and subsists but never understands the importance of the man crucified in his place; the view of early Christianity is respectful and free of pious clichés. It’s an excellent image of the ancient world, with gladiator scenes that are possibly the best ever. Fleisher does exceedingly well with the enormous sets and a well-chosen international cast: Ernest Borgnine, Valentina Cortese, Vittorio Gassman, Katy Jurado, Arthur Kennedy, Silvana Mangano, Jack Palance.

Rock Hudson’s small budget big-explosion war movie applies decent production values and decent direction to a good idea, but substitutes some weak double-crosses for a real screen story. Hudson and his co-producer Gene Corman toss in a fine stack of quality actors… who don’t do much more than dodge tanks, flame throwers, and big explosions. Those explosions look familiar — I’ll bet they were recycled in more than a couple subsequent movies. Aiding and abetting handsome Hudson are George Peppard (manning a Tarantino-issue flamethrower), Nigel Green, and Guy Stockwell, who seems to be in Every Universal release around this time.

Season’s Greetings, everyone! ’Tis the season to be busy and you’ll stay that way snatching up Blu-rays if Severin Films has anything to say about it. Here are two recent releases to consider:
Werewolf in a Girls' Dormitory (1961): It’s an early giallo! No, it’s a monster movie! Actually, it’s both. Werewolf in a Girls’ Dormitory is a stone-cold gas; beautiful, evocative photography from Renato Del Frate (The Holy Nun) and solid direction by Paolo Heusch (Violent Life) highlight this tale of a reform school for girls that has enough red herrings and blackmail amongst its tale of lycanthropic dread. When a new teacher (Carl Schell – The Blue Max) arrives at the school, some of the girls begin to turn up dead, and are thought to have arrived at their station due to wolf attacks. But you and I know better; and with a clever...

Italian horror from the early 1960s covers a wide range of quality, from eerie hauntings to tacky vampire romps. For one of his first major credits, ace giallo scribe Ernesto Gastaldi cooks up Lycanthropus, a murder mystery in which the savage slashing is committed by a drooling maniac with a hairy face, wild eyes and saber-toothed fangs. You saw the poster out front, kid — do you think it might be … a werewolf? Director Paolo Heusch’s thriller is no classic, but neither is it stupid — and the original Italian language option on this disc reveals good work by a spirited cast. Dreamy Polish starlet Barbara Lass is a much more assertive, independent female than what we expect from conventional Italo horror fare.

Curt Lowens, a Holocaust survivor and World War II hero who came to Hollywood and portrayed German officers in such films as Tobruk and Torn Curtain and on television in Wonder Woman and Hogan's Heroes, has died. He was 91.
Lowens fell recently and died Monday night at a rehabilitation center of Beverly Hills, according to the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust. "Curt was a beloved member of our community," it said in a statement.

Holocaust survivor/hero/SAG actor/friend Curt Lowens passed away Monday night at age 91. His absence in the pre-dawn still leaves a void that is palpable — a disturbance in the Force — and one less hero whose presence in my life changed me and others. He set us off on a path of activism as we tried to leverage his example to make a difference in our world as he made a difference in his. My reflections of Curt are deeply personal. I didn’t as much meet him as experience him. I was with my friend Sharon Farber, a four-time Emmy-nominated film.

Jacqueline Bisset’s in a heck of a fix. Her hubby Alan Alda has been seduced by promises of fame and fortune from creepy concert genius Curt Jurgens, and is responding to weird overtures from Curt’s daughter Barbara Parkins. The pianist’s mansion is stuffed with occult books, and he displays an unhealthy interest in Alda’s piano-ready hands. Do you think the innocent young couple could be in a diabolical tight spot? Nah, nothing to worry about here.

The Hollywood Reporter has published an important feature on Hollywood's last Holocaust Survivors. The subjects are Bill Harvey, Ruth Posner, Dario Gabbai, Celina Biniaz, Leon Prochnik, Meyer Gottlieb, Branko Lustig, Curt Lowens, Dr. Ruth Westheimer, and Robert Clary.
The 89 year old Clary rose to fame on the CBS sitcom, Hogan's Heroes, a long-running show starring Bob Crane, that featured life in a WWII P.O.W. camp. Born in France to an Orthodox Jewish family, in real life, Clary was the only one of 14 family members to survive until the liberation.

Originally planned as an Empire Pictures film back in 1986, Mandroid was lensed in 1993 as the first in a two-part series (the second being Invisible: The Chronicles of Benjamin Knight) by Swedish director Jack Ersgard based on a script by long-term Full Moon collaborators Jackson Barr, who also wrote Subspecies, Trancers II and Seedpeople amongst many others, and Earl Kenton, who would go on to pen the sequel and a number of movies for Charles Band’s erotica imprint Surrender Cinema.
The film tells the story of the titular Mandroid, a humanoid robot invented by Russian scientist Dr. Karl Zimmer and his partner Drago, which follows the motions of a man in a special control suit. Planning to sell his invention, and the superconn crystal which powers it,...

Episode Title: "137 Sekunden"
Written by: David S. Goyer & Marc Guggenheim
The Story: Agent Demetri Noh (John Cho) gets a mix of confounding clues and gory details about his potential death on March 15, 2010. Elsewhere, Agent Mark Benford (Joseph Fiennes) follows up on a lead in Germany, meeting with an imprisoned Nazi (Curt Lowens) that allegedly knows why the blackout occurred in the first place.
He Was On My Board: It was pretty much a war of the minds between Benford and Rudolf Geyer, the elderly Nazi that promised to deliver important information regarding the blackout in exchange for his freedom. Of course, he knew pretty much nothing useful — that's the nature of these types of shows, people — but Lowens' performance was nonetheless riveting and I'm look forward to seeing more of him in the – *ahem* – future.
Oh Noh: Things aren't looking so bright for Demetri, who is apparently going to be...

FlashForward is getting awesome, right? This week's episode of FlashForward, 137 Sekunden, will continue to peel back layers by introducing a captured Nazi who knows something about the 'event' that caused the FlashForward. I have a definite soft spot for Nazis in my SciFi, maybe I've played too much Castle Wolfenstein, who knows. Also, this week is the debut of Gabrielle Union as Demetri's fiance. After last week's affirmation that the worst case scenario of his lacking of a FlashForward is chillingly possible we can't wait to see what she has to say. Here are four clips from FlashForward, "137 Sekunden," which airs this Thursday at 8:00pm est on ABC.
